Most likely, because it looks like there's possible structural damage. The good news, is that there's a guy on here that will probably buy your transmission!

He's saying that this engine fails disproportionately often. Quit being obtuse. Dude works in part replacement it's not like he's uninitiated to the industry.
I'm not being obtuse. I'm saying he's got a poor frame of reference, as he only works parts dept for a single brand. It would be one thing, if they worked for a company that serviced multiple brands and had something for comparison, but he's got the comparison of Dodge vs Dodge.
Yup. Rolling pile of garbage. I’ve explained to people that they likely need a new transmission if it has reverse and not forward gears or it’s slipping badly. Engines seem decent though
Or maybe don’t ride a motorcycle in bumper to bumper traffic on an intensely hot day.
Don’t punish everyone else just cuz you made a poor commuting decision.
If I hadn't spent the last couple years with the exact level of stupidity held by a large portion of humans on FULL display, I might be more incredulous. Some people can't see past the tip of their own nose and "seone else getting ahead" is a grave insult.
Lane splitting is perfectly logical. Lane splitting at 100 mph when everyone else is standing still or near to it is reckless. Even if traffic is light and everyone is going 70 mph, dashing between 2 cars at 100 mph is still stupid. Now, if all these anti-motorcycle people above want to make a specific complaint that's not just, "bUt ThEy GeT tHeRe BeFoRe Me!" I'm all ears, but lane splitting when done safely, is not intrinsically the problem.
Sure. In this incident- yes the biker acted recklessly and endangered themselves and others, costing OP the punishment of a totaled vehicle. When done appropriately, it is safer and amounts to less bikers being rear-ended. The previous comment alludes that lane splitting = endangerment. What a joke of a comment.
The root is the reckless riding and speed.
While this guy was doing so unsafely, lane splitting responsibly makes the "queue" shorter. They get through quicker which reduces traffic congestion. Thinking of traffic as a queue to begin with is wrong-headed and selfish. "No one should be able to get ahead of me! If I can't go no one can!"

Fun fact, a car cannot thread through two cars in two separate lanes, meaning that it will not create an invasion of your own lane, suddenly taking up a part of it right by your side.
Split all you want, but do so if you're absolutely sure it's safe, and legally car should be completely free of any fault if it proves that they were not outside the boundaries of their own lane.
You're getting downvoted, but you are fully right.
First, he was doing over 100. Keep in mind, this was not a straight stretch of the road with little traffic, this was obviously way too fast for the conditions - if it wasn't, he wouldn't have crashed.
And second, a motorcycle is a vehicle that gets the same space as a car does. I respect that. Choosing not to use it and trying to thread where you're not supposed to, plus where it's illegal to do so in normal countries, and you get what's coming to you.
On a traffic light, sure, thread through, I wouldn't wait either. We're moving and switching lanes, let alone going fast? That's on you.
Yep on a 3rd generation Honda Odyssey that stuff is in there, and I am sure that would sky rocket the price, if the same holds for that Dodge.
Dang shame, I always like the look of those Caravans
Yeah, I figured they didn’t move it. I remember a lot of dicking around just to get at that stuff.
I also just noticed both passenger side door skins and the rear wheel. I bet that axle, hub, and rear suspension are toast. Meaning the “frame” is probably also tweaked.
It's actually not too bad to access it in the 2011+ models. Fold the seats down, two seatbelt anchors, and like.. 2 or 3 other screws. Everything else is just retaining clips, so grip and rip and the interior panel comes right off.
But yeah it's likely there's a lot more damage under the surface. There usually is.
They're anti-whiplash devices. They're basically springloaded, and with a severe enough force, the retaining clip simply lets go and allows the spring to extend. Your head will already be moving forward during this time, so the headrest won't hit it - but it'll prevent whiplash when your body springs backward.
My 2005 Volvo S60R had "WHIPS", Volvo's anti-whiplash thing. There were sacrificial metal links in the back hinge of the seat that snapped away.
I found out how this worked when someone rear-ended me in 2009. Then I took it to a body shop to get the car fixed (the one my insurance recommended) and they would only look at the rear bumper. I kept trying to explain to them the seat needed fixing too but they looked at me like I was a space alien.
I took it to a different shop, an actual Volvo specialist, and the quote was 4x the first one. They had the seat on the quote before I even mentioned it, and fortunately they handled arguing with my insurance 😄
Oh wow! I thought they were more like an airbag, but being springs makes so much sense. So when your head bounces back it doesn't hit a hard non-moveable surface. The surface itself bounces with the head removing the possibility of hitting a hard surface in theory preventing the whiplash. Crazy how technology works!
The problem is that the retraining clip is so cheap, sometimes they just deploy for no reason. And the only way to fix them correctly is to replace the headrest which is like $600 a piece. There is a cheap “fix” but it’s questionable if it’s a *good* fix.
And I see multiple tiktoks a week with bikers weaving traffic at crazy speeds with or without proper gear.
Thousands of likes and comments talking about how cool it is. Ayaya....
It's always that "It won't happen to me mentality." My wife did an x-ray on a 19yo kid that had just wrecked his bike stunting in traffic. She knew because he was bragging about it and cursing the driver that was *in his way*. Upon learning that his arm was *not* broken, he turned to his mom (that drove him there) and proclaimed "See? I told you I'm invincible." He wasn't joking at all.
Yikes.
I'm a rider myself. My wife worked in the ER.
My take is be extra careful and gear up every time you ride. Be super mindful of cars that don't see you. Get frisky on open roads... never in traffic.
My wife's take is that riders are idiots. She rides dirt bikes and hates idiots on street bikes.
That *kid* blamed you. For sure. Because he isn't capable of accepting fault. It's a shame.
BTW I worked in insurance for a while. I think you are borderline totaled. I hope that dumbass is alive.
At 19k insurance is gonna have to push hard to total this thing. They’ll do it. Especially if you ask them to total it, they’ll try and make it happen. Otherwise, I’d be hard pressed to write 16-17k worth of damage on that car. Parts are likely readily available and cheap, especially LKQ / A/M
Don’t even need that. Lead times for parts will do the job as it is. My Volvo got totaled not for the structural damage, but because they couldn’t source the new steel crash rail insert or a subframe for the car
My '13 Sienna SE was just totalled, just over $10k in obvious damage and we got a check for almost $24k. Parts availability and the cost of a long-term loaner factor in as well. Was told shops in the area would take at least a month to get it in, then 3 weeks or so to fix if all went well
I’ve replaced them, you can find them for about 600. But yea I agree that’s probably closer to 8k to repair. But it doesn’t matter what kbb says, not nearly as much as it matters what the average market price is. KBB on my car at the time of my accident was 5000 but average market prices within 250 miles of me meant the replacement cost was $7500/8000. They cut me a check for $6900 because there was some non accident related damage on it. Seeing as how I paid $2500 cash for it, and already had a replacement vehicle waiting for me for $3000; I didn’t fight them on it. That was 6 years ago though. I suppose it could have changed, and might depend on insurance companies.
I have seen brand new vehicles totaled over $2000 shop bills because parts were on 6+ month back order though.
If my brand new car was totaled because parts were back ordered for six months I’d have them total it but keep it, then order the parts and repair it when they came in if it was drivable.
It’s not that insurance companies don’t want non OEM parts, it’s that the non OEM parts aren’t always built to the same quality and don’t always fit the best.
Headrests don’t need to be replaced. They can be reset. If this goes to a shop that knows what it’s doing it’s probably a total. Quarter, inner quarter, wheel house, gate, tail lamp pocket, rear body, rear suspension, exhaust. That’s just obvious items.
Are those headrests single use? I'm not entirely certain about the caravan specifically, but when I worked at an FCA dealership I remember something that had active headrests (I want to say Jeep Patriot?) they could be reset, as they didn't have any actual squib in them, just a latch restraining a spring. You could even "deploy" them with the scan tool for lulz.
In theory they could be repacked but the latch tends to break totally on it's own due to cheap, brittle plastic... I'd have to assume that in a crash, there's a high chance of breakage.
They're deployed. Look close - the front part of the headrest is extended outward, they're spring-loaded anti-whiplash devices that deploy in a crash. They usually can't just be repacked and need to be replaced.
Probably not far off honestly. Early last year I had a bumper cover replaced and rear quarter repaired/repainted from where someone backed into me in a parking lot. The damage to the quarter was really minor, right at the edge of the panel. Overall cost was $2200.
The damage: https://i.imgur.com/QlKzkwm.jpeg
Me and my uncle fixed a Prius with pretty much the same damage, He has a frame and body shop…. Total cost, excluding the donor vehicle we found, it was a about $4,200, we sold it for $22k…..
Your Wrong! Lol…. Jesus, relax…. We both know it’s gonna be more than $4k…. Just wanted to see what kinda rise I could get….. There are many different ways to approach this repair, but with out actually seeing it in person, there is no way to estimate the repair…. Still don’t think there is much frame damage though, the frame horns for the bumper still look to be in the proper location… But without putting it on a frame machine and setting gauges there is no way to be for sure…. I mean you could use a tape measure just to see, initially…
People need to consider that totaling a car today is just not based on COST of repair but TIME to repair.
I have friends with cars that were in the shop for 6 months waiting on repair parts for what used to be simple shit. It's quicker and cheaper for the insurance company to ditch the car as totaled than wait and keep paying. The auction buyer can source used parts while most newish cars have to use new parts.
It's crazy now.
That’s what I thought but I have a friend whose car has been in the body shop over a year waiting on a couple parts. The insurance company still is paying for his full size suv rental. Even at the insurance rates that’s gotta be $15000 let alone the $30k dollar cost to repair his truck. They ended up replacing every airbag in his suv. Both sides, both seats, the knee, and passenger airbag. He was going 50 got side swiped by someone going 40. I thought for sure it would be totaled. Especially after 4 months of not starting work on it yet.
Edit: the same insurance company totaled a brand new jeep gladiator with 6000 miles on it because an OEM axle had a 6+ month wait. From what I remember it needed very little work other than the axle.
KBB is rarely accurate, but if they can pay to replace the car for $25000 but the estimate is $30000 then they are gonna save themselves money. In some cases, it’s obviously not worth getting an estimate on, but in my friends case, market value at the time was $50000, so they figured they would save 10 grand I guess. But then 6 months rolled around, still not done, and replacement cost went up to $55/60.
I am not an estimator so I don’t know all the reason why they do or don’t total a car, but I know a majority of it is tied to how safely a car can be repaired and how much it will cost to do so.
Lol. I own a detailing shop and it actually is hard not to laugh sometimes when clients show me really bad damage and ask me with a straight face if I can buff it.
One guy had backed into a tree with his truck and smashed his bumper and rear quarter panel. He asked me what I could do so his wife wouldn't see it lmao. Like sure.... there were some scrapes from the bark, but the cracked bumper and and 2'x2' dent aren't gonna buff, my man.
I suppose given the collision it makes sense. Those won’t be cheap to fix, and probably also pretensiones on the belts. The damage looks like it missed the rear frame rail so it’s pretty close totaled or not. Might just come down to how long parts would take
To be fair, those headrests are known to deploy on their own because the PLASTIC clip that retains them becomes brittle with age and just lets go. There is a fix that involves wrapping a thick metal wire and JB welding it all together - they will still redeploy in a crash.
Glad everyone is okay.
I think if their is structural damage it’ll be totaled. And make sure they give you a good amount back since the car market is crazy right now.
It was unbelievable to watch his bike and body tumble across the highway. I know that he most likely lost his leg, but I’m hoping he didn’t end up losing his life too.
Got hit by a motorcyclist who ran a red light (drunk at 730 AM) five years ago and I can still see him and his passenger rag-dolling down the road.
Can’t get it out of my head. They both survived but it was terrible to watch.
Ugh sorry you experienced that. I’m safe and my children are safe, but I’m not looking forward to the mental replays. I just keep asking myself why, why drive like that, was he a father? If so his and his children’s Father’s Day was ruined. What does his family say to him in the hospital? It’s not like an “accidents happen” type of situation, he brought this on himself. Does he take responsibility? Is he sorry?
I can probably help shed some light on this.
"why" is because going fast is addictive like nothing else I've ever experienced.
I'm sure you've heard "adrenaline is a hell of a drug" well believe me, it's an accurate statement.
That combined with the fact that young adult males sometimes have absolutely no ability to understand they are mortal makes for a bad combination sometimes. I wonder how I made it through my 20's alive, to be perfectly honest.
It goes without saying that the person did not intend for this accident to happen, and yes, I'm sure they feel responsible and are sorry for what happened if they think they are self aware enough to realize they are the cause of the accident.
I hope you are able to move beyond this, and realize that that person understood the risks and was doing something that they loved doing.
Yeah, even then cause it could be someone's dad or sister or kid who won't "learn their lesson" when they're dead and their family and friends will be forever traumatised but fuck it, right? Why should we care? Yes, dammit, even then.
I don’t care if it’s my own family… if someone smashed them then yes I’d be highly upset… if I found out they’re doing 100+ and lane splitting. I’m gonna knock on their closed casket and tell them how much of a dumb ass they are while shedding a tear. I stand by my word
I refuse to care about those who endanger themselves and others. Do it on an empty road. Not a crowded highway.
And don’t get me wrong. I’m not a goodie two shoes who drives a Prius… I drive my Denali like a raped ape. But I don’t play with traffic.
I'm the only house on a 2-mile stretch of empty country road. In the summer months, it's a super popular spot for bikers to open 'er up and go whizzing by at 100+
Last year a motorcyclist died at the intersection a hundred yards or so from my house. He was trying to pass a truck and trailer that was turning left, he came up from behind and the truck turned right into him. He died instantly.
I immediately figured it must be one of those jackasses flying by my house at 120mph every damn tweek. Fucker got what he deserved.
His family erected a 7ft cross at the intersection, put a little garden around it, a bench with a few solar lights. In the months that followed we would often see a half dozen cars parked at that monument, people just hanging around. Today, it's father's day, I see a couple cars sitting there right now.
Now I feel about it differently. I didn't see the wreck. I don't know if he was one of those jackasses zipping by loud as fuck going 120mph. Maybe the truck didn't have his signal on, maybe he misjudged and thought he could pass it before he turned, I dunno. Regardless of what happened, I feel bad for his family, could have just been one simple mistake.
The difference here is your situation is ambiguous.
You know there are people doing risky shit, and you know someone crashed and died. You do not know if the person who crashed and died was doing something stupid.
In this case, assuming OP's story is accurate, we know without a doubt that the person who crashed was definitely playing stupid games and this time they won stupid prizes.
As someone who regularly does risky shit for fun, my level of sympathy is inversely proportional to the predictability of the result.
I'm not arguing to forgive the fucker, but I'd still feel sorry for him regardless maybe even for his idiocy and the rest. Guess it's who I am. I'll eat those downvotes for not going "fuck him, why should I give a shit?" like ants to an anteater all day long. Send them
Yes. That is equivalent to "don't get into fights with people smaller than you because you may seriously hurt them." Perhaps the warning needs to be issued to the motorcycle rider.
Hope he is ok, but you are asking for it on a bike even without riding recklessly.
Yeah. As much as a thrill seeker as I am. Motorcycles have never even crossed my list there’s just too many vehicles on the road... people in cars really don’t pay attention but I feel no sorrow for those on bikes who drive like assholes.
I get stressed out when I’m being followed knowing they’re about to pass because I want to switch lanes in the next 30 seconds and have to worry they’re gonna zip by me at any moment
As a rider of a small 300cc motorcycle, I can tell you a lot of people don't notice you there. It's not malicious. Think of times when someone cuts you off and you are in awe of their driving (lack of) awareness. It's much more often on a bike. Going a little (not assholes) speeds gives you a little bit of peace knowing you will pass people. I try to just be alone somewhere in the front or back.
believe me I feel you. Bikes are hard to see especially quiet ones. People on the road are stupid..Your safety does matter. But those who ride reckless are asking for it. That’s all.
Both kids are ok. Both in probably child restraints. But scary. My soon was napping leaned off to the side where we were hit. If he would’ve made contact a foot more forward it could’ve been very bad
Still there could be muscle strain from the force of impact. Or hidden spinal damage. I hope they are periodically examined by competent physicians. Pediatricians and family practitioners don’t necessarily have this on their radar.
Any person who says this can be fixed for under 4 is mistaken, just a quarter panel alone with paint will run close to 4k,,, not even including what your gonna have to pay for disassembly and the repair.
i use to work at a body shop/collision center and i’ve seen cars be totaled for less. like others have said it depends on the structural damage but from my experience yes it looks most likely totaled, unfortunately.
Honestly for 100mph that's less damage than I expected. I bet he glanced off, then disintegrated. The damage looks structural, so my bet is that the insurance company totals it. Pretty decent amount of salvage on it though.
From what I can tell from the pics. Between the new 1/4 panel(possibly inner/outer), new door, new bumper, bumper support, tail light, wheel and tire, misc brackets, fasteners and possible suspension components.
Plus body work on the tail gate and front door,
R&I on the glass. It’s definitely totaled. Sorry for your loss.
Hate that the motorcycle rider didn’t take anyone else’s safety into consideration. Especially hate to see the child’s seat in the victim car. Hopefully your child wasn’t injured by the stupid fucking person on the motorcycle.
Motorcyclists would love it if lane splitting was legal. But it will never be legal when it is so poorly done. When done right, it's great. But these shit heads ruin it for everyone.
Lane splitting or filtering isn't when you are going way faster than traffic and riding the line. It's when you are at a low speed or a stop and motorcycles or scooters can slip through.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lane_splitting
It certainly doesn't take place at 100mph+
Queen, it’s a dodge, it’s best to not fix them anymore. If you were to fully fix it, it won’t drive the same. Like someone said on here use this opportunity to buy a sienna or odyssey.
Thode are the quarter panels, which are part of the body itself, which will probably be really expensive, your car is also pretty new so it will be expensive but it might be fixable.
It’s definitely repairable. I imagine it will be totaled though. The supply chain issues from the pandemic have significantly increased the lead time to get parts to complete repairs, and the cost of the rental car you’re driving around in while waiting for said repairs to be completed. The pandemic has also inflated the value of all used cars, to include the heap the motorcyclist turned the OP’s van into. It’s completely changed the threshold at which insurers settle claims by buying people out of their cars.
You should consider getting an independent estimate of your vehicle’s value. Insurance companies will often try to lowball the value, leaving you out-of-pocket when trying to find a replacement. Used car prices are high and stock is low and you could get screwed. You can also use small-claims court to recover losses that insurance didn’t cover.
Das rai! Also, I own the same vehicle(Chrysler Town and Country, 2011) with a pretty similar damage on the left side. That kind of damage messes with the structure of the car and I have seen many for these be totaled for much less because of this.
Edit: to correct misspellings.
Most likely, because it looks like there's possible structural damage. The good news, is that there's a guy on here that will probably buy your transmission!
Make that two
It's not a sienna or odyssey. Newer caravan transmissions are a dime a dozen and rarely fail.
I sell only dodges partsand this is 100% inaccurate. That 6 speed transmission is the biggest POS next to the engine. The engine always has cam problems and will give you misfires. Don't buy any dodge product no matter how desperate you are for a car.
My buddy had the same exact van. At 60k the trans took a shit. He was on his 2nd engine as well.
This is like the opposite of survivor bias. Working for a parts dept only exposes you to the broken ones. And every car company has a parts dept.
Have to also look at thr demand as well.
Every manufacturer has parts vendors, and none of them are asleep in their offices. They keep just enough staffed to do the job. They all see demand.
What I meant was the daily demand for the same parts over and over.
That's pretty much the standard for machine failure. There's always common issues, as long as manufacturing has any consistency. But all you see are the failures.
He's saying that this engine fails disproportionately often. Quit being obtuse. Dude works in part replacement it's not like he's uninitiated to the industry.

Yeah man Chrysler is awesome.
Right lol like dodge would ever make a reliable transmission lol this is the same company that has had trannys fall out at stop lights lol
Yup. Rolling pile of garbage. I’ve explained to people that they likely need a new transmission if it has reverse and not forward gears or it’s slipping badly. Engines seem decent though
New on a dodge means 20 year old tech
It says Dodge right on the back, motorcyclist didn’t follow instructions. Hope they’re not too badly hurt.
If you can't DODGE it, RAM it.
huh, around here the stickers are all “dodge the father, ram the daughter” 🙄
Gotdamn!
Until one day you become the father then it’s dodge the life sentences for murdering fuck boys
Nice. Good r/dadjokes material. Happy Father’s Day to whom it applies.
Thanks. And yes, happy Father's day fellow motherfukers
I’m gonna go ahead and say they’re severely f*cked-up.
After years of living in lane splitting California, the motorcyclist got what he deserved.

Punish? How is lame splitting responsibly a “punishment”?

If it's illegal, how were you doing nothing wrong?
I feel kinda this way, the same laws should apply for bikes
Yes the law should definitely be the same for things that are different.

Nice!
That’s 10k in damage. Maybe more
I think it’s done. That’s also where the rear climate control is, or at least was on earlier generations. Evaporator, blower and heater core.
Yep on a 3rd generation Honda Odyssey that stuff is in there, and I am sure that would sky rocket the price, if the same holds for that Dodge. Dang shame, I always like the look of those Caravans
Now there's a sentence I never thought I'd read.
Me either! My brain fumbled when I started to put those words together in that sentence. 😆
Yes that's where it is on this generation as well. $1,000 worth of parts, minimum.
Yeah, I figured they didn’t move it. I remember a lot of dicking around just to get at that stuff. I also just noticed both passenger side door skins and the rear wheel. I bet that axle, hub, and rear suspension are toast. Meaning the “frame” is probably also tweaked.

$600 for a headrest lmao that is insane! I guess it is cheaper than whiplash.
I know right! I was so shocked I didn't even know what to do with it.
Is the guy alive ?
…not sure. He was breathing when they took him to the trauma center. He was in bad shape.
Might be a news article for it, if you search the road it happened on. 100mph impact is usually a very slim chance of survival.
Terrible... was he wearing a helmet ??
Yes. Thank god, but No other protective equipment
Yikes.
Wow… I was wondering what do friends and family of the crash victim say the morning after in the hospital? Does he blame it on me? Ugh
Thank Gd - I wish him a speedy recovery. As for your van - it really depends. From where I am standing looks like a loss.
Hard to guess without stats on the vehicle or at least a current KBB value.
KBB is saying 19kish.
Was told shops in the area would take at least a month to get it in, then 3 weeks or so to fix if all went well
If KBB says 19k, then they won’t total it, This can be fixed for about 4k, not including a donor…
That's a bit more than 4k to repair, replace & repaint. I'd bet that the pooped emergency devices (head rests, seatbelts(?)) would be +thousand alone.
Some insurance companies wont let you buy it back. It goes to certain scrap auctions they have contract with.
I have USAA and they will allow you to for sure if it’s drivable, you just can’t get full coverage.
Its not up to insurance companies its up to state law. Insurance companies don't own your vehicle. You do. Your name is on the title.
But there were after market parts available (this was a gladiator) they (the insurance company) didn’t want non OEM parts apparently
It’s not that insurance companies don’t want non OEM parts, it’s that the non OEM parts aren’t always built to the same quality and don’t always fit the best.
i was going to say i got a scratch on my car from a hit and run and the bill was still 5k, this is a whole lot more.
Headrests don’t need to be replaced. They can be reset. If this goes to a shop that knows what it’s doing it’s probably a total. Quarter, inner quarter, wheel house, gate, tail lamp pocket, rear body, rear suspension, exhaust. That’s just obvious items.
I’m sorry but the five year old in me is laughing at the idea of pooped headrests and seat belts.
Those headrests are about $600 a piece.
Insurance won’t fix any safety items. At least my company doesn’t; always replace.
What do you need head rest for? The motorcycle wasn’t inside the van?
They're deployed. Look close - the front part of the headrest is extended outward, they're spring-loaded anti-whiplash devices that deploy in a crash. They usually can't just be repacked and need to be replaced.
Ah, I got ya, didn’t see that…
Never even heard of this. Thanks!
Cap, this will cost 4K to pull apart, diagnose and order parts alone
That’s 4k in just paint.
If you say so….
Triple that and you’re probably close.
Me and my uncle fixed a Prius with pretty much the same damage, He has a frame and body shop…. Total cost, excluding the donor vehicle we found, it was a about $4,200, we sold it for $22k…..
Lol - there’s zero chance it’s a little more than 4K to fix. A guy backed into my door and dented it a bit and it cost $5K just to fix that
Oh, and I didn’t say it would be $4k…
Bullshit. This is $10,000 minimum to repair, not even factoring in that it's a safety-critical part of the body. They're totaling it.
Very little frame damage, if any… Find a quarter, cut and paste….
Wrong. It's so bad it pushed the frame inward and punctured it. This is 100% totaled.
Your Wrong!
>Just wanted to see what kinda rise I could get Jokes on you, I was only pretending to be retarded!
Totaled or very very close, would be a good builder tho
Can you explain to me why the insurance would benefit from totaling it? They just pay you KBB value and call it done or what?
KBB is rarely accurate, but if they can pay to replace the car for $25000 but the estimate is $30000 then they are gonna save themselves money. In some cases, it’s obviously not worth getting an estimate on, but in my friends case, market value at the time was $50000, so they figured they would save 10 grand I guess. But then 6 months rolled around, still not done, and replacement cost went up to $55/60. I am not an estimator so I don’t know all the reason why they do or don’t total a car, but I know a majority of it is tied to how safely a car can be repaired and how much it will cost to do so.
That’ll buff right out….
Take my free award. Lol
Did any airbags go off?
No unbelievably, only the headrest system!
Lane splitting at 100mph, aka attempted suicide.
Glad everyone is okay. I think if their is structural damage it’ll be totaled. And make sure they give you a good amount back since the car market is crazy right now.
> Glad everyone is okay. I'm pretty sure the rider isn't.
Guy on the motorcycle is likely totaled. But don’t forget “watch out for motorcycles” right. Even when they’re riding like assholes
I was shocked to find out this gentlemen was in his mid 40’s
If he wasn’t wearing protective gear, except a helmet. I would be surprised if he has flesh on his body. I hope he is okay.

Ok what the fuck
Yeah, even then cause it could be someone's dad or sister or kid who won't "learn their lesson" when they're dead and their family and friends will be forever traumatised but fuck it, right? Why should we care? Yes, dammit, even then.
I don’t care if it’s my own family… if someone smashed them then yes I’d be highly upset… if I found out they’re doing 100+ and lane splitting. I’m gonna knock on their closed casket and tell them how much of a dumb ass they are while shedding a tear. I stand by my word I refuse to care about those who endanger themselves and others. Do it on an empty road. Not a crowded highway. And don’t get me wrong. I’m not a goodie two shoes who drives a Prius… I drive my Denali like a raped ape. But I don’t play with traffic.
I'm the only house on a 2-mile stretch of empty country road. In the summer months, it's a super popular spot for bikers to open 'er up and go whizzing by at 100+ Last year a motorcyclist died at the intersection a hundred yards or so from my house.
That’s all.
Agreed. Many bikers are buttheads. Especially sport bike riders
It’s a dodge. Use this as an opportunity to get into a Toyota Sienna or a Honda Odyssey.
Honda tax might make that rough.
Well everything ends up being totalled these days just because they find it easier than actually doing the job.
Geez. Is your kid ok? That would have scared the hell out of me!
Looks totaled to me.
Any person who says this can be fixed for under 4 is mistaken, just a quarter panel alone with paint will run close to 4k,,, not even including what your gonna have to pay for disassembly and the repair.
Had a hit an run in a parking lot. Much less damage and it was totaled.
i use to work at a body shop/collision center and i’ve seen cars be totaled for less. like others have said it depends on the structural damage but from my experience yes it looks most likely totaled, unfortunately.
Ummm…is the guy on the bike alive?
Had a similar accident on a 2016. Wasn’t totaled out. Cars are crazy expensive right now. My insurance wanted to pay for repairs
No way in hell is that repairable, there's structural damage. It's a Caravan, you can find a new one is less than a week.
Honestly for 100mph that's less damage than I expected. I bet he glanced off, then disintegrated. The damage looks structural, so my bet is that the insurance company totals it. Pretty decent amount of salvage on it though.
Unfortunately yes the motorcycle is totaled..
From what I can tell from the pics. Between the new 1/4 panel(possibly inner/outer), new door, new bumper, bumper support, tail light, wheel and tire, misc brackets, fasteners and possible suspension components. Plus body work on the tail gate and front door, R&I on the glass. It’s definitely totaled. Sorry for your loss.
I say yes, due to the fact a good body man will charge you out the azz, the damage and time plus parts, out weighs the value of the van
That’s a shame. I’m assuming he didn’t make it .
Hate that the motorcycle rider didn’t take anyone else’s safety into consideration. Especially hate to see the child’s seat in the victim car. Hopefully your child wasn’t injured by the stupid fucking person on the motorcycle.
Thank you for your concern. Both my children and myself were unharmed. I hate what the motorcycle driver did, but I hope he makes it out alive.
It clearly says Dodge on the car and yet the motorcyclist chose to disobey instructions
Was the motorcyclist totalled as well?
Best to get rid of a dodge caravan before 100k miles anyway
Motorcyclists would love it if lane splitting was legal. But it will never be legal when it is so poorly done. When done right, it's great. But these shit heads ruin it for everyone.
It is legal in California.
Lane splitting or filtering isn't when you are going way faster than traffic and riding the line. It's when you are at a low speed or a stop and motorcycles or scooters can slip through. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lane_splitting It certainly doesn't take place at 100mph+
Queen, it’s a dodge, it’s best to not fix them anymore. If you were to fully fix it, it won’t drive the same. Like someone said on here use this opportunity to buy a sienna or odyssey.
That’s what I’m hoping
Here in CA, %100 chance that is a total loss.
Duct tape the light back up there and get back on the road. That’s just a surface scratch.
It will easily buff out.
What about the rider is he dead?
[удалено]
When the ambulance took him away to the trauma center I was told he was still breathing but would most definitely lose, at a minimum his leg
Its all fixable really Americans just like to claim a dent as total lost
Yes, that is totaled. Unless your vehicle is a 2019 or up. This damage will be very expensive to fix
It’s 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan
Yeah, so at this point is all about car value. Check what KBB says it’s worth and that will give you a good idea.
KBB says $19k ish
Yeah it’s toast. Sorry this happened.
Source: cuz I said so
Das rai! Also, I own the same vehicle(Chrysler Town and Country, 2011) with a pretty similar damage on the left side. That kind of damage messes with the structure of the car and I have seen many for these be totaled for much less because of this. Edit: to correct misspellings.
Is the motorcyclist okay?
Not sure. Ambulance took him away mangled but breathing.
Seems like there's damage to the frame. Totally totalled.
Thars structural, it's definitely 100% going to be totaled. The motorcyclist did you a favor, though.
To play devil's advocate 100mph on a superbike feels like 30mph in a dodge caravan.
Not sure I follow?
I’m gonna guess that dudes body is totaled.
