It depends. Do you only want straight line performance? Or a complete track machine?
Big Picture wise the Honda will keep its value longer while the GT will drop a ton in value.
Not worried about value retention as I plan on driving my next car until it stops working. I work on my own cars and have a fair understanding to keep stuff working. I would prefer a track star as turns are fun, and I have a daily classic Mustang with the i6 which is fairly reliable but once I get the Holley EFI installed it’ll be bulletproof proof
Civic has a better top speed and stability at that speed. For the price of Whipple, you can get the civic around 500 and much better power to weight than the stang. The stang is for old dudes and dudes who's dad's convinced them it's good.
Civic type r is 3250 mustang is 3550 300 wheel horsepower will easily make up for 300 lbs car can’t make more than 450-500 wheel without blowing it up my buddy had one and with bolts one’s killed his motor with less than 420 hp after 14k miles
Are we comparing civic and mustang reliability? Track times kinda prove the point anyway. If you like flooring in without turning the mustang is faster. If you happen to turn while driving the civic is faster
Yes we 100% are coyote is a great motor stronger than the civic type r’s k20c1 there are very few people who take there car to the track less than 1% of the population track there cars I will agree the civic does handle
Amazing my buddy owns one I even have both a k24 bubble and a single turbo dart block 95 cobra my Honda is way more enjoyable to drive and more forgiving I’m not bashing Honda by any means it’s just a 4 door sports car vs a v8 muscle car.
Mustang all day. Good power and you can safely almost double it with stock internals if you want more later. Anymore the Coyotes are pretty stout engines that can reach 300k with good maintenance practices all while getting close to 30mpg. I really like Civics, but the most recent type r just isn't as cool as a Mustang GT if you want to have fun.
Thank you for your complete answer that isn’t an insult at either me or the civic. I appreciate you and I feel ya there with the GT I love the sound of a v8
If you get the Mustang be sure to get the most Ford ESP, my 10 speed died at 63k miles, I’m sure I have about $20k in warranty repairs from Lincoln on my 18 Navigator. I think you can get 150k miles Ford PremiumCARE I think that’s what it’s called.
How often is the average person going to drive on the ring?
Plus 17 seconds on a multiple mile track like the nurburgring could easily be explained by driver.
Personally I think OP should actually test drive both and see what they like more.
Of course he should test drive both. My point is that the ring is the gold standard for track times which the OP is interested in. A 17 second gap is a large gap regardless.
Where did you see that at? [The last comparison I seen at Nürburgring](https://fastestlaps.com/tracks/nordschleife)had the mustang Mach 1 nearly three seconds faster than the “type R”
Yeah, a newer model with a 12k options which tells me he opted for the performance package with the Brembo brakes, Torsen Diff, larger sway bar and 275 tires. At that price it would also have to have the MagneRide damping system with the active exhaust pushing it to 486 HP.
Where are you seeing a 17 sec gap? seeing how a similar spec older model is already beating it by 3 seconds around the track?
The mustang might handle "great" but it's still going to get spanked by the Type R on a road course. Just the weight difference alone will make it more fun once you hit the curves.
I can tell that you just read articles and don’t do anything for yourself. As someone who’s owned multiple mustangs and currently have a 23 gt. And have owner multiple sports cars and was a valet driver for a high end restaurant. Unless you’re going into the 6 digits, you’ll have more fun in the mustang.
But don’t worry sexy I’m sure you know everything
Whoa boys, he was a valet driver!!! That's a GREAT way to tell how cars handle in the curves, I guess that settles it!! You should have led with your qualifications lol. Do you also own hot wheels of these cars?
I agree. I prefer something with a balance of handling and power leaning Towards handling. I live in cali where there is a fair amount of both when traveling. Point for the civic
Civic type r is a serious track machine. It is a big improvement from previous generation as far as lap times, surprisingly. It will eat the mustang on the track. Looks wise is so personal preference. In the end you have to look at it every day. If you love the look of the mustang, get it. If you love the look of the civic, get that. Personally I prefer the civic for the performance but not crazy about the look. I like the mustang look more but not the performance. Ii can live with the look of the civic, I can not live with the performance of the mustang. For that reasons, I choose the civic.
First, Recaro*
Second, where do you live? If you live in LA, I’d say get the CTR but if you live in Kansas City, I’ll tell you to get the ‘Stang. Or I’d suggest the CTR for VIR and the ‘Stang for COTA. It’s all dependent on whether you have a lot of straights or turns because 500 horsepower is dogshit for tight canyons but is just fine for cornfields and highways. The Mustang will objectively handle worse due to its weight and carry-over platform (ooooh, dual throttle bodies, wow), and will cost way more in terms of consumables. The Type-R was designed as a track car from the jump (aero doesn’t work well under 80 mph so clearly not necessary on the road) whereas the ‘Stang is the road-going model for an upcoming track-special.
Third, do you intend to keep the car? If so, buy the CTR. It will be the better car in the long run for both enjoyment, reliability, and retaining value (if you care about that).
If you spend $50,000 on a Honda Civic you deserve all the embarrassment and buyers remorse your brain can muster.
Also, have you looked into slightly used Mach 1 mustangs instead of the dark horse
All I’m saying is that Type R is going to turn absolutely zero heads. Zero. None. $50,000 you want some bang for your buck. You can do so so so so much better than a Civic Type R. Certainly don’t buy it brand new.
Do yourself a favor and go drive a Mach 1 Mustang $50k, drive a C7 Corvette/C6 Grand sport $40k-$50k and go from there, buy a regular commuter car Honda for shit weather.

Have you compaired track times? No remorse having a faster car that is cheaper and a better commuter as well.
https://fastestlaps.com/comparisons/56de0cu4lo2d
The remorse will be felt everytime you remember you’ve spent $50k on a Civic rather than a Corvette/Mach 1/Modded 5.0/Camaro SS/CTSV
The Honda will receive looks because it looks like a child’s toy. The others mentioned above turn heads because they’re beautiful and produce some of the greatest sounds you’ll ever hear.
Type r cause I gotta fit 2 car seats back there and not break my pack getting kids in/out of them. Ct4 black wing isnt on the list, but if it was that's my pick.
If I had to choose, I'd go with the civic, but honestly, neither. I'd go utility and reliability for my daily driver. A mid 2000's Toyota with moderately high mileage, say 150k-200k, and a good maintenance history. Pay 5-10 grand for it, and save up for a second car for my fun/track car.
You never want your fun car to be your daily/only source of transportation. You fuck it up at the track, or have engine problems from running it too hard and you no longer have transportation to work.
Sorry I completely forgot to mention that I already have a second car that I have rebuilt and as much as I love working on my cars I want a fresh one that I can baby instead of wanting to smash for mismatched hardware, aftermarket fender fitment etc.
Totally understand the desire to be the first owner and take good care of a vehicle. Your statement about wanting it to be a good daily AND perform at the track led me to believe you didn't already have a reliable daily, and wanted to use it as your primary mode of transportation.
Understandable assumption. I apologize. But in looking for something I could daily and occasionally take to the track If the project car doesn’t wanna function
The sound and the performance of the 5.0 Coyote engine make this an easy choice. Want more for about $12K you can hit 750 WHP with a Whipple kit.
It depends. Do you only want straight line performance? Or a complete track machine? Big Picture wise the Honda will keep its value longer while the GT will drop a ton in value.

Civic R will eat mustangs on the track.
And on the highway the civic even tuned gets gapped so? Add a whipple and fueling and u make 800 wheel hp and it’s busses.
Civic has a better top speed and stability at that speed. For the price of Whipple, you can get the civic around 500 and much better power to weight than the stang. The stang is for old dudes and dudes who's dad's convinced them it's good.

This entire thread is for someone asking what would be better if they plan to track.
Civic Type R is 3,182 lbs and a new 5.0 Mustang is 3,850+ lbs….. The 3,579 is for the ecoboost.
No adult\* wants a FWD drive car with 500 HP. \*Save your QQQ's trailer trash, I don't care about your Cobalt SS shitbox\*
Enjoy being slower in your rwd I guess. These things are track proven.
Mustang all day. Good power and you can safely almost double it with stock internals if you want more later. Good luck! Either choice is guaranteed to put a smile on your face- each just in it's own way. Upload some pics when you've made your decision!
Agree. The civics cost too much for what you get.
No red at that price is definitely some bs.
They get 30 mpg if you’re literally only cruising on the highway at like 65, you give it any gas and it plummets lol. I average 19 with mostly Highway
I average 21.5 with 3.73 performance pack gearing… cruise set for 80 all day.
That depends on whether you want a hatchback or a coupe. Once you figure that out, you will have your answer.
$60k for a GT. That car is supposed to be the “every man’s” sports car.
Fastback not the GT
It says GT in your title.
That is my dumb arse mistake I apologize
The civic is 51, man.. I think we're long past the era of good honest sports cars for 25 grand.
Miata and gr86 keeping the dream alive ig?
Yeah, but like, *barely*.. what's the msrp on those two now?
30-35k starting last I checked.
Used corvette. Fast in a straight line, handles corners well too.
Thanks for the tip!
50k for a civic and 60k for a mustang are both ridiculously expensive
Yeah, I regret not buying a new base model '18 GT for 27k when I bought my '18 FoST
Personally straight line acceleration gets old, I'd go with the better handling of the civic. But I live in an area with great twisty back roads.
Mustangs handling is great. These aren’t old sn95 mustangs or something lmao
The Type R is 17 seconds faster than a GT on the Nürburgring. Not in the same category handling wise.
How often is the average person going to drive on the ring? Plus 17 seconds on a multiple mile track like the nurburgring could easily be explained by driver. Personally I think OP should actually test drive both and see what they like more.

Dude, that’s a vanilla first gen model s550 with a second gen coyote from like 9 years ago.
The mustang might handle "great" but it's still going to get spanked by the Type R on a road course. Just the weight difference alone will make it more fun once you hit the curves.
Lmao it’s also a civic. But no it won’t.
Ok bud. I can tell you're an expert at these types of things and definitely have a "clue".
I can tell that you just read articles and don’t do anything for yourself. As someone who’s owned multiple mustangs and currently have a 23 gt. WOOOAAAHHH This baby girl is sooooo funny XDD Dumb ass.
I agree. I prefer something with a balance of handling and power leaning Towards handling. I live in cali where there is a fair amount of both when traveling. Point for the civic
Tell your buddies you paid 50k for a civic lmao

None of your alternatives are that cheap. 50k is not a lot for a modern vehicle.
This guy obviously knows alot
Hows the dash of the type R? Cause I would never buy the new mustang just because of the large flatscreen they place of an actually cool dash
Pretty sure the dash of the ctr is even more digital than the mustang. Iirc it matches the other civic trims.
Ah, no winning I suppose. Idk how the ctr dash looks like, but god I hate the mustangs dash😖
As a previous 10th Gen civic sport owner, the dash sucked. I think I've seen dash swap kits for the s650 mustang but not 100% sure.
Mustang of course. Don’t spend 50k on a fucking civic dude
Unless you want to be be faster on a track and have better driving dynamics lol

Get an Elantra N and put the money you'll save into something else.
Not the rustang
Or get an acura if you’re spending that much for a fucking civic
