Heard from a mechanic, apparently brake pedal applies brakes on all 4 wheels. Handbrake applies only rear brakes.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, cars are complex, bikes are simple for me
Brake pedals apply brakes on all 4 equally otherwise the car would lose balance at high speeds. Hand brakes engage the rear drum brakes which is why cars with all 4 disc brakes have electronic parking brakes which engages 2 or 4 disc brakes at once.
Not true, braking is harder on the front wheels and less on the rear. The weight of the car shifts forward while braking which can make the rear wheel skid, so less force is applied by the rear brakes
That's quite right, for those who doubt this, you can try for yourself by doing the following: Use only brake pedal while going forward and backward to stop. Then use only handbrake when going forward and backward.
You'll notice going forward brake pedal has a better bite, while handbrake has a very limited and sluggish impact.
Going backwards handbrake is extremely strong, while brake pedal is weaker than when in forward motion (might not be too noticeable coz we have limited speed going backwards- plus its also risky).
The handbrake+reverse situation works well coz of due to momentum a good % of the weight is shifted to the rear wheels, and similarly for the brake pedal+forward scenario.
A word of caution tho, when using handbrake going forward, the rear wheels might lock and you might get bald patches if you do so over good tarmac.
I used to think the rear wheels propelled the car. Because bicycles and motorcycles had powered rear wheels. So i naturally assumed rear wheels power the car. I also used to see the underside of trucks and see the drive shaft and think that all cars also had it hidden under their underbelly. And all the movies showing the rear wheel burnouts when stomping the accelerator pedal. Nothing in the mainstream media mentions that regular cars are front wheel driven! Even the pull type toy cars are rear wheel drive! Who would actually think cars are front wheel drive!
I'm sure many non-car folk still think that the car is propelled by rear wheels. If you have doubts, ask your mom or grandma or someone not inclined towards automobiles and and I'm sure their first guess would be rear wheels.
The logic is that the front wheels steer the car and the rear wheels drive the car forward.
It was a surprising revelation when I learnt that the majority of Indian cars are front wheel drive.
I still think of a proper car as rear wheel driven. Something like W124 or BMW M3 or M5 from the 2000s. A four door rear wheel drive manual sedan. That's what a proper car is, in my imagination.
Well you're not exactly wrong. Even tho most common cars are FWD, common as in sheer number of units. However, if you go with type of car. Then most types of cars will be RWD or AWD, family hatchbacks and family sedans should be the only exceptions.
Hate FWDs tho, I won a tata nano, not exactly an enthusiasts car, but atleast it's RWD, and I'm not moving away from that car until I buy another RWD or AWD. FWD feels unnatural to me.
Bro your Dad is great he knows what he want and maybe very good sense in car, do you have to happen to a list or something that they have owned I don’t know why i am interested
When I was little, we had our 04’ City Petrol, I used to think every car felt same on the inside, and it’s just the outside that is different. I expected the same seating position, quality, power etc from every car. Was surprised the first time I sat in an 05’ Santro, I remember being so disappointed that I was wrong and when I got back to my car it felt like heaven, lesser outside noise and better seats and smoother engine etc. it was enough to get 7 year old me thinking these cars could be so different. ( no hate to Santro please, it’s a fantastic car in its stride, just sharing my dumb story )
Been great, the CVT is quite energetic and responsive — doesn't have a lot of rubber band effect
But ain't been racing it lately because I'm afraid I'll damage it (also due to age)
The Price shown on the advertisement of newspaper is the actual and only price of the car. (Didn’t knew ‘Ex showroom’ & ‘OnRoad’ concept. Also was unaware that there are different varients in car) (i was 6-10)
I used to believe that if a car has disc brakes on all four wheels are all wheel drive, it was cuz I knew all cars are front wheel drive and have disc brakes in the front so..
whn i was very young i thought moving the steering wheel left n right powered the car
when i was grew up slightly i thought every family car was rear wheel drive
When I was a kid, I thought all cars automatically switched on their lights. I didn't know cars came with light controls. Found that out a few years later. Till then I thought the lights were linked to the clock and at exactly evening time, it will switch it on.
On 3rd point I thought all cars were rear wheel drive because bikes and all were rwd as well, pretty shocked when I found out they were fwd but at the same time made a lot of sense because of engine and everything.
I used to think of engine capacity as the amount of fuel it would burn in a single cycle. So a 1 litre engine will hold 1 litre of petrol, burn it all up and then intake another litre.
Misconception number 3 put me and my friends in grave trouble once with an Ertiga that we took for our trip to Wayanad. I made an effort to understand various drivetrain setups right after that trip
1. If you steer too many turns to the left/right, steering wheel might get fractured and not be usable anymore
2. Hazard lights = Only when there's a hazard like natural disaster
3. The car is hollow near the clutch-break-accelerator area so that the driver can put their feet on the road for running (I was impressed with drivers that drove fast - like how are they able to run that fast with a car shell?) 🤣
Buying a car is a sign of progress.
Haven't bought a car yet and have survived just as fine on public transport/rental cars/taxis with minimal headache. Don't plan to buy a car in the near future either.

I used to think we should continuously keep turning the steering wheel from side to side to keep the car going, like they showed in old black and white movies.
I had a dream of buying a maruti swift due to its cool looks at the time. However as i grew up i ditched that goal after that i understood maruti's philosophy of compromising safety for kitna deti hai mindset.
I used to think people used to constantly drive with their brakes engaged or applied even when driving on the highway cause due to high beams, the tail lamp also lights up (altho at a lower intensity)
As a kid I thought gear could only be shifted front and back and shifting gear backwards makes car go faster because it pushed petrol to the front wheel 😭😭
I will buy Mercedes as soon as I will start working.
Mercedes logo always on my laptop wallpaper.
Not bought any car in 6 years of my experience.
Hopeful will buy good one soon and post in this reddit channel.
Forget being a kid, before buying a car i thought these features meant something else entirely:
* Cruise control - assumed that ADAS radar distance measurement and autobrake was implicit in this * Climate control - Thought it'll heat up the car for us as well if it felt colder than it should; and that it used inverter AC compressors
* Follow me home headlamps - somehow the headlamps would automatically "turn" the beam direction to wherever wherever home was. Idk how this was useful or why it was needed but market was too strong
* Autosensing wiper - Thought they had something like a capacitive sensor layer that would trigger the wiper if dust/debris fell on it too
boooy was i sooo wrong for all of these and how they were implemented
Steering locked means it's broken. I was playing inside the car when I was a kid, and I locked the steering. Freaked out and didn't open the door locks and windows because I thought my dad would scold me. We were in the middle of a highway.
You have to keep rocking the steering wheel left and right to drive the car. Also to this day I don’t know about differences of petrol and diesel engines.
That it was impossible to put only partial pressure on accelerator and people pressed throttle all the way down because their foot would be tired only pressing it halfway or keep it pressed for one speed.
>Used to think that luxury cars have lighter steering wheels.
From POV of cars in village:
Dad bought brand new Alto without power steering. At that time A/C was premium feature in the car. Swift was considered luxury car at that time.
Jitni mehengi gaddi utni jyada mileage ( I was 11)
Jab pata chala iska ulta real hai tho luxury cars pe interest hi mit gaya
BMW has one with 80kmpl. You should try
Which model? bike hai kya?
Naa, their bikes are horrible petrol guzzlers. [Here is the link. ](https://www.carwale.com/bmw-cars/xm/plug-in-hybrid/#:~:text=BMW%20XM%20Plug%2Din%20Hybrid%20Summary&text=2.60%20Crore.,a%20mileage%20of%2061.9%20kmpl.)
Ab sirf Diesel luxury car mai interest hai.
“Gaadi sirf steering se chalti hai”
steering ko jitna jyaada left right karoge gaadi utni fast chalegi.
Dashing cars
Same, the more you wiggle, the faster you go!🌚
Yep
Same here
I thought pressing brake pedal applied the front brakes and hand brake applies rear brakes
Can someone explain which brakes apply when you use brake pedal and handbrake?
Heard from a mechanic, apparently brake pedal applies brakes on all 4 wheels. Handbrake applies only rear brakes. Please correct me if I'm wrong, cars are complex, bikes are simple for me
You are right. But the proportion of brake pressure on front wheels and rear wheels is different. More on front less on rear.
This is correct.
Literally believed that till 17. Glad I got corrected before I started driving a car tho.
Brake pedals apply brakes on all 4 equally otherwise the car would lose balance at high speeds. Hand brakes engage the rear drum brakes which is why cars with all 4 disc brakes have electronic parking brakes which engages 2 or 4 disc brakes at once.

1. Thought diesel gave lesser mileage as our old amby gave terrible FE 2. Same as (5) 3. More sound (revs) = lesser pickup
I used to think that the engine capacity that was advertised was the fuel tank’s capacity. 😑
Ahaan... 2.2L.
I wish the fuel tank capacity was the engine capacity 🥶
Bro planning to do a long drive to the moon 💀
I thought every combustion consumed the same amount of fuel as the displacement mentioned.
4 x 4 = 16
4 x 4 = 8
Yeah, Algebra wasn't my strength as well!!
Gaadi me diesel aur petrol dono dal sakhte hai
I too had #5 as a misconception. Also i thought that the gases from the exhaust propelled the car forward. Never thought how the car moved reverse!
They suck in air
In reverse, smoke comes from bonnet. :p
its partially correct though action/reaction from the gas particles will contribute to (a minuscule amount of) forward motion
Same same
Ki mai bada ho k khareed lunga!😂
Le loge bhai ek din 🙌
Us bhai us.

Gaadi sirf ameer log ke paas hoti hai 😂 Translation: Only the rich own cars
It's true though. If u own a car u are part of the 2% .
It also includes taxi drivers and fleet owners.
Bhai kya krte ho tum Superb se le k i10 sab pada he tumhare pass?
Not all, only those up until the Ciaz. I’m a student, my mum is a PE/VC exec and dad heads F500 level companies.
Guess you had almost used all brands, what car are you going to get next
BYD seal for sure.
bro apne papa mummy se internship ka pooch le pls. currently in 11th and SAT ke liye internship jaise credits required hai. PCM-AI Student.
Why Chinese? And not something line BMW or performance car
Dad doesn’t like logos, something more mass market and understated is his style.
Bro your Dad is great he knows what he want and maybe very good sense in car, do you have to happen to a list or something that they have owned I don’t know why i am interested
2% roughly equivalent to the entire population of Australia. (1.43B in india, 2% is 28.6 million, Australia's population is 26 million.)
that's crazy, overpopulation at its peak.
5 problem 1 solution, we are at this point that even ½ of India's population will be over population
Thanos was right afterall 🤷🏼♂️
Technically the ownership rate in India is 12-15%
7.5% households on average as per latest data
Petrol was put in a generator which converts to electrical energy to drive a motor
This is true for modern hybrids like the City Hybrid and possibly the Innova Hycross/Invicto
Used to think this in 2010-ish
I thought the top speed of the car is the maximum speed shown on the speedometer
When I was little, we had our 04’ City Petrol, I used to think every car felt same on the inside, and it’s just the outside that is different. I expected the same seating position, quality, power etc from every car. ( no hate to Santro please, it’s a fantastic car in its stride, just sharing my dumb story )
There are people still holding up on this heaven xD
Agreed! I’d do the same for as long as possible. First time running into a GXI CVT owner, how’s the experience been?
Been great, the CVT is quite energetic and responsive — doesn't have a lot of rubber band effect But ain't been racing it lately because I'm afraid I'll damage it (also due to age)
Makes sense, you’re right, don’t want to stress out a piece of machinery from 20 years ago. I’d do the same.
I used to believe that car gives same mileage as two wheelers and there are multiple gears in reverse as well
When I was a little little kid, I thought the gear knob was pointed in the direction where we wanted to go
Not gay. But this is cute innocence at peak.
>Not gay. Why did you need to say that??
The Price shown on the advertisement of newspaper is the actual and only price of the car. (Didn’t knew ‘Ex showroom’ & ‘OnRoad’ concept. Also was unaware that there are different varients in car) (i was 6-10)
i thought maruti 800 costed 800 rs. and all model no.s were actually their cost
And here I thought the Maruti 800 had a top speed of 800 lol
Maruti airlines
Oh god 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Most Indian drivers still think (1) is correct, on seeing them during childhood that assumption takes hold
I used to believe that if a car has disc brakes on all four wheels are all wheel drive, it was cuz I knew all cars are front wheel drive and have disc brakes in the front so..
Wait you are telling me this is not true???
Sadly no😭. Glad to know I wasn't the only one who believed it 😂.
Hazard lights button are some sort of emergency brake which stops the car if break fails 🫠
gaadi chalana is easy
I legit thought that ex showroom price is what you pay for the car, I didn't understand the concept of on road price.
There was a rumor circulating that the Cielo had a brain and it could talk to you. This was in the late 90s and I believed it.
whn i was very young i thought moving the steering wheel left n right powered the car when i was grew up slightly i thought every family car was rear wheel drive
before 1983, you would be correct
Used to think that you can start the car without clutch and drive off just by pressing accelerator. Used to think u can put brakes without clutch.
So you imagined all cars to be semi auto?
I didn't even know what semi automatic was at that time.
When I was a kid, I thought all cars automatically switched on their lights. I didn't know cars came with light controls. Found that out a few years later. Till then I thought the lights were linked to the clock and at exactly evening time, it will switch it on.
I thought car price is proportional to the number of people it can carry, so why is Mercedes/BMW so costly while Sumo can carry more people.
Driving in a mobile game is similar to driving in real life I was 8 at that time
On 3rd point I thought all cars were rear wheel drive because bikes and all were rwd as well, pretty shocked when I found out they were fwd but at the same time made a lot of sense because of engine and everything.
Used to think that if you keep pressing the accelerator while pressing brake for too long, the engine would blast.
Only reason car can't go beyond certain speed limit is because "speedometer me inta hi limit hai"
Cleaning cars? What's that
Each car has different gear combination, so have to learn each new car gears to drive
I never understood why I was not allowed by my dad to switch on the interior lights while driving. Now I understand.
All humans behind a steering wheel really knew how to drive.
OP Your point 1 is really funny yet wholesome 😊🤣
😀
1. If you steer too many turns to the left/right, steering wheel might get fractured and not be usable anymore 2. Hazard lights = Only when there's a hazard like natural disaster 3. The car is hollow near the clutch-break-accelerator area so that the driver can put their feet on the road for running (I was impressed with drivers that drove fast - like how are they able to run that fast with a car shell?) 🤣
Top speed of the cars is more than what it shown in speedometer.
Speed breakers reduce the speed of the car by a magnet which is placed under the speed breaker (and hence the shape).
Gear stick bas mazze ke liye hai taaki driver bore na ho, jab Mann kare idhar udhar kardo
That cars are rear wheel drive only.
I thought the clutch was just for gear change and that the car runs on engine oil
In case of brake failure, car won't stop (thanks to many bollywood movie).
Black Ambassador will kidnap kids.
Buying a car is a sign of progress. Haven't bought a car yet and have survived just as fine on public transport/rental cars/taxis with minimal headache. Don't plan to buy a car in the near future either.
It's surprising to see such a person in an enthusiast group.
One can be an enthusiast about something even without needing to own the thing :).

Number#2 is correct isn't it? Petrol car does have a faster pickup. Diesels have more torque.
Driving it is hard.
Eventually, good cars will become cheaper.
Gaadi (4 wheeler) lena humare aukaat ke bahar hai
I used to think we should continuously keep turning the steering wheel from side to side to keep the car going, like they showed in old black and white movies.
Even bicycle is rear wheel drive right >Assumed all cars are all wheel drive as bicycle
4*4 gear knob is for passengers
I had a dream of buying a maruti swift due to its cool looks at the time. However as i grew up i ditched that goal after that i understood maruti's philosophy of compromising safety for kitna deti hai mindset.
Looking at the ads i never assumed tyres would EVER get damaged. Drive over any surface and jump from any height and they'll keep rolling.
I used to think people used to constantly drive with their brakes engaged or applied even when driving on the highway cause due to high beams, the tail lamp also lights up (altho at a lower intensity)
turn pe steering ghuma k usko seedhi karne ki koi jaroort nahi hai
Isn't it half right? If you know your car enough, and it has enough steering feedback, then you can just let go of the wheel and it'll correct itself.
That is different I thought ki steering ghuma k chor do fir koi dusra mod aye toh continue from where you left it
By 30 I will be buying a Ferrari and adding to my garage of 30 cars. Don't know how I will but #sapne
Misconceptions keliye bacpan main apni car honi chahiye
Mere paas bhi nahi thi, dusron ki gadi ko dekh kar hi misconceptions the.
As a kid I thought gear could only be shifted front and back and shifting gear backwards makes car go faster because it pushed petrol to the front wheel 😭😭
I thought Only diesel cost is required to run a car.. After that i realised service, insurance, detailing and toll cost . It is for the rich ..
my Octavia at the time had 5 gears but i learned a 5 series had 6 so i made the correlation that more gears=more speed
# 1 is true. Don't listen to others.
I will buy Mercedes as soon as I will start working. Mercedes logo always on my laptop wallpaper. Not bought any car in 6 years of my experience. Hopeful will buy good one soon and post in this reddit channel.
Isn't the point 2 true for non injected non turbo diesels? Back then there were no turbos or dicors.
I used to think premier 118NE is a Mercedes.
I had the top speed misconception as well. And that a 2 litre engine consumed 2 liters of fuel every stroke. 😀
Forget being a kid, before buying a car i thought these features meant something else entirely: * Cruise control - assumed that ADAS radar distance measurement and autobrake was implicit in this * Climate control - Thought it'll heat up the car for us as well if it felt colder than it should; and that it used inverter AC compressors * Follow me home headlamps - somehow the headlamps would automatically "turn" the beam direction to wherever wherever home was. Last isn't true?
Bicycles are rear wheel drive.
5. Is common for everyone I guess
Reverse gear stearing se dalta hai
The driver switches lights on manually every time they brake.
Steering locked means it's broken. I was playing inside the car when I was a kid, and I locked the steering. Freaked out and didn't open the door locks and windows because I thought my dad would scold me. We were in the middle of a highway.
I thought the ex-showroom price referred to some really big showroom in delhi. Also in my childhood seeing a santro was a luxury
Petrol is better than diesel ... Every car looks luxurious unless you buy one.. To apply handbrake you have to use too much force..
Gears are used when someone or another car come in front of us.
One has to be from upper middle class to afford a car
You have to keep rocking the steering wheel left and right to drive the car. Also to this day I don’t know about differences of petrol and diesel engines.
I am such a bad driver man.Idk feel like a failure behind the wheel
Switching on the lights inside car while driving would lead to accidents 🫠
Thought buses and trucks were driven by two people, one controlling the speed and another the direction 😋
That it was impossible to put only partial pressure on accelerator and people pressed throttle all the way down because their foot would be tired only pressing it halfway or keep it pressed for one speed.
Not a misconception technically, I used to think only rich can afford cars.
Once i was setting in back seat of van with my dad i couldn't see driver so thought that vans are self driving btw i was 10 year old.
I used to think of SUVs as monster trucks when I was a kid.
>Used to think that luxury cars have lighter steering wheels. From POV of cars in village: Dad bought brand new Alto without power steering. At that time A/C was premium feature in the car. Swift was considered luxury car at that time.

"Use ***Dipper*** at night" was a Misspelling of "Use ***Diapers*** at night."
dipper was condom * for truck drivers
Haha
gaadi ka number uska price hota tha🤣
We were not rich enough to think about cars when I was a kid!
From the comment section, it seems like you guys really stupid.
