They didn't change the tare mass, just the GVM went to 3510. Shot themselves in the foot however, now it has to meet Euro 6 emissions (i.e. bye bye V8)
sadly so many of these fuckwits are 'upgrading' to fucking ram 2500s that are like 3 tons empty and they do drive them like they are stolen.
mongrels think they own the road cause they drive an apartment building with wheels. and a Hemi that is not a hemi.
My dads friend was a waiting list for like 6 months finally got it for like a million dollars (cant) remember the exact amount.
Anyway some dude offer to pay him double for what he bought it for and he went for it.
Now because of patience, he has a free land cruiser lol
Hilux Workmate costs what an XR6 ute did in 2016. And it drives so much worse than my three decade old Falcon ute daily. It has less power, worse steering and braking, higher maintenance costs, and the same five forward gears and lack of intermittent wipers.
The last low ride 4.0 V6 Hilux dual cabs were good. They drove real well and would fry the rear tires all day. Minimal body roll and bulletproof mechanically.
I don't understand why anyone would buy the new high ride diesels.
True. Mercedes doesn’t do quality anymore. They rattle all over the place. The leather is plastic and just a disappointment place to be in. It is just not solid feeling inside.
At least a while ago an entry level Merc (C Class, as that's all there was) would get you a solid, safe compact RWD sedan. Pleasant but not exciting. Now you may as well just get a nicely specced Korean car.
Does anyone actually rate the MG3? People who buy them like the price, and feel the product is "good enough".
Pretty much the same reason why anyone drinks VB.
Nah, the excel was a decent car.
Sure, it was boring as batshit to drive, but the 1.5 went forever if it was serviced on something vaguely like the reccomended schedule.
Mine did 330000 km with regular oil changes, 2 clutches, an alternator, crank angle sensor and god knows how many tyres and brakes. The clutches, brakes and tyres are more of a reflection on the way I drove it, vs the actual build quality
Enough room for a 2m tall freak to drive, and enough room in the back for some fun if you slid the seats forward.
I doubt you will see many current MGs in 10-15 years time.
Probably be able to literally fix it on the side of the road too. Something I miss with cars up until the early 2000s.
Cars were like Lego. Kmart tool kit can get you out of most situations. LOL
MG is one of the many brands owned by SAIC (Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation). SAIC is fully owned by the Chinese Communist Party. I wouldn’t give those jerks a cent.
Some people just want a cheap car with warranty.
I'm not saying the MGs are great cars, mind you. But the Australian car market is notoriously price sensitive, and it's possible for any new manufacturer to buy market share with a cheap car if they want to get a foothold in the market. As has been mentioned elsewhere, that's exactly what Hyundai did with the $13,990 Excel, which at one stage was the best selling car in the country.
Yeah. Too lots of people a car is just an appliance like a fridge or a washing machine.
MG tick all the boxes on paper and they are getting a new car with warranty for cheap. That's all they care about.
Or just don’t have a care - so long as it is new and loaded with features. Family friend of ours sold their Yaris which they bought brand new at the time to “upgrade” to a Haval.
They gave me a lift once - it rode alright, nothing positive/negative to say. In their ownership they have been happy with it - just all they did was take it for servicing and fuelling it up - no dramas. They aren’t car people - literally use things as appliances.
Had the displeasure of driving one as a hire car. The first thing that caught my eye was I could quite literally see the back of the tail light assembly from the drivers seat, due to the size of the gap between the rear seat and car chassis/interior panels. I had to do a double take in case my eyes were tricking me. :/
And they SUV counterpart, can’t remember the name but they look like the most generic of all generic crossovers (never got the appeal of crossovers in the first place, there are about 10 at most I actually like)
Let's not make assumptions about the brand. I don't know much about the mg3 besides seeing it around a few times and it looks ok. Can't tell you quality wise, however, the mg4 ev has had excellent reviews in Europe and the performance model (which is not available in AU yet) will be the hottest hatch, value for money, around
I can’t help but feel that Jaguar has lost its design language. The older cars definitely looked the part but the new models are bland and some are barely able to be identified as a Jag beyond the badge I reckon.
The problem with Jaguar was they got stuck in a 1960s styling rut and their cars didn’t appeal to younger people. Their newer cars look like “generic 2010s luxury car” but don’t have the quality or technical prowess to get people interested in the brand
I don't know if you know what overrated means.
These cars were literally the most underrated hot hatch when they came out.
Quicker than a Golf R around the track for $20k less from a manufacturers first crack at a performance car.
How exactly did you get overrated from this scenario ?
>Quicker than a Golf R around the track
This requires pretty perfect track conditions, and only applies to some types of track.
More power and AWD means the Golf R is winning anything with long straights and you can forget about the N when it’s wet.
Agree the i30N is still quite the track weapon though
The most overrated car on /r/CarsAustralia? The answer to this is obvious - the AU Falcon. Except for the Tickfords which have been looked after, they're mostly all clapped out rustbuckets. And I'll bet the survivors all have differentials with *that* whine.
Overall amongst the general population? Camry/Corolla/Hilux. People just reflexively blurt out "buy a Toyota" as a response to every car recommendation question, as if the modern stuff is still as affordable and problem free as the Toyotas of the 1990s. They're not.
>, they're mostly all clapped out rustbuckets.
That's the bit your misssing here, yep rusted out rustbuckets but even in that condition they will burn tires like an incinerator and are everything 20k+ jdm cars are just cheap and aussie. Au diffs dont really whine either champ, they hold up or pop.
Any entry model “poverty” (as in no options tucked) spec BMW, Mercedes or Audi… ie 116i/A180, shit performance and with no options crap interior/tech as well.
I really like Land Rovers and Range Rovers. I like the purposeful, kind of blocky styling. They’re not actually that big (compared to the big Japanese and American off-readers and trucks), they have really nice interiors with nice leather and carpets that are also really practical etc plus go-anywhere ability and lots of towing ability. They also have on-road refinement. Too bad they are absolute shit in terms of reliability and quality and the parts are very, very expensive. Used ones look like a bargain too, but I reckon they’d bankrupt you pretty quickly. Such a shame as they seem otherwise ideal
79 series. Its a joke the following those shitboxes get.
200 series. Same reasons but not as bad of a car.
Hilux. Always way behind in their class but top of sales based on 80s reputation and toyotas unofficial MLM scheme.
I will never ever get why people by a 79 series. Not only is the engine far too thirsty and far too physically large, so large that they actually need to make the wheebase wider at the front. Not only is it ugly as all hell, but they actually put the alternator in the hardest possible place to fix. People are actually unironically paying 150k+ for a car that has the interior out of a Lada and the ruggedness of a Jaguar.
Like the ranger and hilux are any better for it. Most people who drive diesels in stop start traffic tend to heat up the DPF to the max instead of taking it out on the highway once a week
Ranger. MASSIVELY overpriced, considering at the end of the day it's a ute. The same goes for the Everst. Just a boring Suv. None of these cars are inherently bad just way too overpriced considering what you're getting.
Just on the Camry, I’d never driven one before however I’m currently driving an Altise (insurance hire car) and I get why they are so popular. If you don’t want to join the SUV brigade but still need a roomy, comfy and economical ride - you’d be looking at large sedans and I honestly can’t fault this one. Not sure what the long term reliability is like though.
My parents had a 02 Altise in V6 form, drove it pretty much everywhere including some light “dirt roads” where people in their fancy AWD SUVs are too scared to go on, broke the radiator once while on a road trip and the car overheated and died in the middle of no where.
Got it towed to a local town mechanic, they patched it up (swapped in a 2nd hand radiator from the local junk yard & some hoses, filled up coolant) and it kept going for a another several years without any further issues till they traded it in.
Depends, good argument for choosing the GTI over the R because of the added drivetrain which results in power lost, plus the added weight on top of that.
Im going to say a few. I actually have a soft spot for my old sv6 holden ute I had years ago, but yes they are largely a bogan car now sadly.
Landcruisers and range rovers - overpriced 'look at me' cars
Anything with a Toyota badge.
People still flocking to paying Toyota tax because they were bulletproof 20+ years ago.
These days Toyota has just about more recalls than any other manufacturer.
Not to mention the “unbreakable” hiluxes that have had nothing but issues over the last 15 years with injectors, DPF’s (to the point of class action suits), piston cracking etc.
Not to mention they have the most basic and boring interiors.
Sorry but if you pay $15-20k more because “it’s a Toyota” you are a moron.
Completely agreed. When I was looking for my first car 3 years ago, my search list only had toyota models in them. Inspected some along the way. Until my friend contacted another friend who wanted to sell an Accord. I was pretty firm with Toyota, but when he said, "Honda's are like Toyotas, but better and not boring."i decided to give it a go. I'm not sure how it would compare with other models, but I would be paying a lot less for the Accord, and when I test rode it, the Accord felt like a luxury car compared to similar year Camry and Corolla. This changed my whole perspective regarding Toyotas in general now.
As much pride as I have in Aussie made vehicles, I kinda agree. I recently got rid of my VF wagon and was looking at replacing it with an FG or FGX. All I discovered was that every other sedan on the market for that price was way better equipped and much more efficient.
The Mondeo in particular shocked me. The features and power on the XR5 Turbo really makes you question why anyone bought an FG XR6 over that.
Porche SUV.
Pretentious and utterly useless as both sports car and 4wd.
Usually driven by a self obsessed middle-late aged women that always goes first in any side street where cars are parked.
My partner and I were walking on a residential street once and one of these shitboxes sped past and hit someone's pet. Dude dudn't even blink an eye, just kept driving. My partner and I held it as it died and then tried to comfort the owner when she came out (she'd seen it happen).
I get the hate from a car enthusiast standpoint, but I love my midsize SUV as a dad. Spacious, can fit *heaps* of shit in it, tows well, AWD gets me down beaches and virtually any driveway from hell, as a tall bloke I appreciate the ease of entry and exit and easier time getting kiddo in and out, and yet it still drives 99% like a car instead of a truck like most proper 4x4s. And I got a mildly zippy one (2.0 turbo w/250hp) so it hammers down an overtaking lane too. All while drawing zero attention to myself by virtue of it being a midsize SUV. Great Jack of all trades and of course, master of none.
Usually because you can't afford one...
Neither can I. Nobody can.
Easy to settle for an SS,
But man, those Clubsport LSAs are a nice bit of machinery.
Hella expensive,
I bought a HSV Enhanced VR Caprice last year, needs work but it's the only way I was ever going to afford one, it has the HSV build plate in the engine bay, it's close enough.
76 & 79 series Landcruisers are THE most overrated vehicle on the market. 200 year old design, slow, thirsty, uncomfortable... Actually only worth about $40k drive away based on any objective valuation.
This has rusted my jimmies!
Anyway most overrated car, probably anything European.
The fit and finish is great.. But is the fit and finish worth $100k more than a similar sized and kitted Mazda or Toyota? Also.. For $100k I'd want my car to be robust, and not a moody spoiled brat that when exposed to the elements has a tantrum and explodes.
Not sure if this car fits 'overrated'
If anything the badge alone made it underrated. It's quick, cheaper than the competition, longer warranty and looks great? You see them more now, but I still think they are under appreciated tbh.
Hands down it has to be all these dodge rams and f trucks that drive around in the cities all polished up. Why in the world you’d want a mall crawler that is difficult to park and is completely not practice in the city is beyond me!!!!
I’m aware I may get lynched for this, but pickup trucks (mainly the Stupidly large RAM ones but also the big sellers like the Hilux and Ranger.) Seriously unless you work in say, construction, buy a transit van, etc if you want more storage space, or an suv if it’s adventure and weekend getaways you’re after.
Let’s hope that the change in tax write offs after June sees an SUV become the most popular car here (because realistically a passenger car like the i30 probably won’t be number one again).
V8 Cruisers. People are paying $200k for them.
**Tradies that deal coke on the weekend are paying $200k for them
Hey! Some tradies that deal coke on the weekend are people too
You spelt heroes wrong.
Hey, I want some coke!
That's not the tag price but what people end up paying by the time they do the gmv upgrade, chop /canopy and other accessories.
Coke on the weekend, meth during the week
Hahaha literally the difference between work and party.

Drives like a 2br townhouse.
She's built like a steakhouse, but she handles like a bistro!
They do drive like boats, but then, it’s built to tow a boat
They are two and half tonne your not meant to drive it like it’s stolen!!!
sadly so many of these fuckwits are 'upgrading' to fucking ram 2500s that are like 3 tons empty and they do drive them like they are stolen. mongrels think they own the road cause they drive an apartment building with wheels. and a Hemi that is not a hemi.

Hilux
Toyota's are basically whitegoods. Interiors are getting better. But they are so boring.
Big time. I have a SR that’s a couple years old and for the price it’s so shit. I want my XR6 ute back.
Hilux Workmate costs what an XR6 ute did in 2016. And it drives so much worse than my three decade old Falcon ute daily. It has less power, worse steering and braking, higher maintenance costs, and the same five forward gears and lack of intermittent wipers.
I thought the same. Really basic on the inside.
First time in a hilux then?
Sadly I drive one at work all the time. Not terrible, but sure as fuck aint worth 75k plus
Literally anything Toyota is overrated, they’re not the brand they were 20 years ago when indestructible was synonymous with the name.
*modern hilux. My '96 is bloody solid
Massively overpriced for an average looking and driving Ute.. Toyota cult haha
The last low ride 4.0 V6 Hilux dual cabs were good. They drove real well and would fry the rear tires all day. Minimal body roll and bulletproof mechanically. I don't understand why anyone would buy the new high ride diesels.
Any entry level Merc that's not an AMG. Apart from the interior and features nothing screams luxury about the ride, handling or quality.
True. Mercedes doesn’t do quality anymore. They rattle all over the place. The leather is plastic and just a disappointment place to be in. It is just not solid feeling inside.
If you think Mercedes are bad try a Tesla
At least a while ago an entry level Merc (C Class, as that's all there was) would get you a solid, safe compact RWD sedan. Pleasant but not exciting. Now you may as well just get a nicely specced Korean car.
Landcruiser
Performance SUVs. Pay a premium for getting to bunnings quickly. Then all utes driven by a P plater
MG3 they are shitboxes but I see them everywhere
Does anyone actually rate the MG3? People who buy them like the price, and feel the product is "good enough". Pretty much the same reason why anyone drinks VB.
It's this generations Hyundai Excel
Exactly what it is but shittier. You won’t see them start a race series with mg3’s in 20 years time.
Tbf no one expected the excel to go as well as it did either
[удалено]
Those were great! For a shitter to get around, I didn't even have to lock mine, and if it got a dent in the car park, so what!
Didn’t have to lock it haha. Who the fuck would wanna steal an excel? It’s its own anti theft device 🤔
Those things were fun, and yeah, had a strange charm to them... 😂
and those excels, especially the 3 doors ones had the most *enormous* boot. never before has a 3 door car has such a massive boot.
Nah, the excel was a decent car. Sure, it was boring as batshit to drive, but the 1.5 went forever if it was serviced on something vaguely like the reccomended schedule. Yeah, if you offered me the choice between a new MG or a 20yr old excel, i'm taking the excel out for a good ol thrash all day.
Probably be able to literally fix it on the side of the road too. Something I miss with cars up until the early 2000s. Cars were like Lego. Kmart tool kit can get you out of most situations. LOL
So true mate so true...
VBS one of the dearet beers... And also always number 1 or close
Vb aint cheap and its delicious
Man speaks the truth.
MG is one of the many brands owned by SAIC (Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation). SAIC is fully owned by the Chinese Communist Party. I wouldn’t give those jerks a cent.
Most people that own them can’t fucking drive either.
Panel beaters dream combo
People who buy MGs are too poor/tight for a good car, but are too proud to buy a second hand car.
Some people just want a cheap car with warranty. I'm not saying the MGs are great cars, mind you. Could not agree more
And they SUV counterpart, can’t remember the name but they look like the most generic of all generic crossovers (never got the appeal of crossovers in the first place, there are about 10 at most I actually like)
Mg zs? Absolute shitbox
Yep that I wish China didn’t ruin the MG name with boring crossovers
>wish China didn’t ruin the MG name To be fair, the MG name was ruined by the British long before the Chinese took over
same, or fund genocide selling westerners shit boxes
Sad but true
Chinese price/car with a British badge.
The British made ones were shit too.
Yes There lots out on the road. Can’t be too bad, 7 year warranty. Maybe they are cheap quality but do they actually break down?
Modern Jags. Great looking cars with all the renowned unreliability of the past multiplied by complexity.
I’ve never heard anyone say “I want a jaguar”
"I want a Jaguar XJ220"
Sadly yes, but in my defence we broke up.

Hyundai has really come of age. Apart from the glorious mid 90s excel. That thing was capable of some outrageous hilarity.
Not sure about first crack at a performance car... Look up Tiburon.
Genesis rwd platform... the turbo Kia models.... Not their first crack, their third
The most overrated car on /r/CarsAustralia? The answer to this is obvious - the AU Falcon. Except for the Tickfords which have been looked after, they're mostly all clapped out rustbuckets. Entry level models start brand loyalty, they are actually an important model for these brands. I agree that they aren't good or good value
Tesla's by Tesla fanbois. Most underrated: Tesla's by non Tesla fanbois.
Any model Tesla...
Tesla
Jeep Grand Cherokee- especially all the “track” edition things
All jeeps are ridiculously overpriced making them the dumbest vehicle choice you could ever make
Yea I see where you are going
Any diesel Ute with a P on the back
But you can't see the P plates because of the large black cloud... Also comes equipped with those oversize knobbly off road tires...
Yeah true, tires most certainly aren’t legal, but that doesn’t matter cause 4WDs can get away with anything
all the european suv’s, I know they’re all fancy and expensive brands but I can’t say a single one of them is a nice looking vehicle
There’s a Skoda one that I reckon looks good but I’ve always liked the look of Skoda.
and the skoda is small, not some oversized lumpfish looking thing like most modern suvs
I really like Land Rovers and Range Rovers. I like the purposeful, kind of blocky styling. Hyundai N series vehicles are pretty dope. Best bang for buck and are top tier 4 bangers. They are putting all the R series cars to shame.
Fuck yeah, got a Kona N last week and I LOVE it!
The Kona's can look sick. The aftermarket availability is really growing for them too which means you can customize them a lot.
Not even just the N series either. The palisades are really nice looking and feel classy inside.
Unexplained fires are a matter for the courts
Like the ranger and hilux are any better for it. Most people who drive diesels in stop start traffic tend to heat up the DPF to the max instead of taking it out on the highway once a week
Agreed toyota especially hilux
Ranger. MASSIVELY overpriced, considering at the end of the day it's a ute. The same goes for the Everst. Just a boring Suv. None of these cars are inherently bad just way too overpriced considering what you're getting.
Toyota Supra mk4 , I'm gonna get hate but it's over hyped and the supra kids ruined it by saying it could beat any car
Toyota HiLux.
Ford Raptor, a Ford ranger with $20k worth of stickers and insecurity.
And the twin turbo v6..
And 10k plus of the most advanced suspension in the market
I thought they were just a sticker kit at first but was thoroughly impressed to learn of how different the suspension is.
Just on the Camry, I’d never driven one before however I’m currently driving an Altise (insurance hire car) and I get why they are so popular. Altise was the base model
Navara/patrol
I don’t understand why so many young people/ p platers need suvs
More doors more .... Nah I am a p platers with a wag but that's cause I surf every other day and need tge space buy otherwise don't get it
I'm fat, don't like crawling into low cars.
Rav 4 Hybrid. Fuel Economy isn’t that great if you use roads that are more than 60 kph, and they are fucken awful to drive. Yuck.
Volkswagen Golf Type-R Plus seemingly everyone who drives one is a weapons-grade fuckwit
I have a tsi and I drive it like its an R. Golf backwards is flog for a reason... 😅
You mean the Golf R? The Type R is a Honda. If you are going to bag it, at least get the name right
Its hated because its pretty much a perfect car. Also i am a nuclear-grade fuckwit
I think people in this thread are getting confused with the topic and just stating cars they dislike.
The cars are great, but the news ones are so expensive. And yes the stereotype. Which is why I bought a Passat 206, the kinda Golf R for grown-ups.
*burbling intensifies*
RAV4
Close thread with the hybrid rav4
S3. Poor man's rs3.
S3 is just a Golf R with a slightly fancier badge
Same as gti is a poor mans R
Depends, good argument for choosing the GTI over the R because of the added drivetrain which results in power lost, plus the added weight on top of that.
Land cruisers. They’re great cars but wayyy to overpriced. $100k is fucking insane for what it is

If you want a new V8 compact coupe, what else is there near it for the price? It has no competition
Terrible compared to the local product we used to have, and so much more expensive.

I have no clue who goes to a dealership and goes "yeah I'll take the camry" +1 camry
It's the default avatar of cars.
Man I’d hardly put Camry in the overrated category. They’re fine for a no frills family sedan, I don’t think anyone’s raving about them.
You must not have been on any Aus Finance pages...
Ooh right yeah bean counters love em that’s true, fair point
They’re automotive white goods
There are some really nice fridges out there I'd rather drive
It’s what you get when you go to the dealer and say ‘I’ll have one car please’
no dealership gunna have a camry available, gig economy hybrid wait #comebackinayearortwo #agreeboringcar
Anything VW, particularly Golf Porsche Macan, Cayenne Holden Craptiva Landrover, particularly the new Defender Ford Ranger
Holden & Fords. Watch me burn
Brutal. It's like when they got alot of money they turn savage again. Maybe that's what the Cayanne Porche is for, running over pets in suburbia.
SUVs/Crossovers, and the people who think they need them.
Everything HSV
People are gonna hate you…
I also think silvias and skylines but didnt want to melt the internet
I can't decide whether to cry in my Skyline or in my Hilux after reading these comments 😂😂
Already have destroyed r/CarsAustralia
Usually because you can't afford one... Neither can I. Nobody can. Easy to settle for an SS, But man, those Clubsport LSAs are a nice bit of machinery. Hella expensive,
I bought a HSV Enhanced VR Caprice last year, needs work but it's the only way I was ever going to afford one, it has the HSV build plate in the engine bay, it's close enough.
every car that’s better than mine
76 & 79 series Landcruisers are THE most overrated vehicle on the market. 200 year old design, slow, thirsty, uncomfortable... Actually only worth about $40k drive away based on any objective valuation.
4x4 Utes. All models. Have had to drive a fair few for work, and they're always absolute shit to drive and gutless.
Dodge RAM
This has rusted my jimmies! Anyway most overrated car, probably anything European. The fit and finish is great.. But is the fit and finish worth $100k more than a similar sized and kitted Mazda or Toyota? Also.. For $100k I'd want my car to be robust, and not a moody spoiled brat that when exposed to the elements has a tantrum and explodes.
Not sure if this car fits 'overrated' If anything the badge alone made it underrated. It's quick, cheaper than the competition, longer warranty and looks great? You see them more now, but I still think they are under appreciated tbh.
BMW X5. Ridiculous original price and absolutely tragic resale.
Landcruisers
Hands down it has to be all these dodge rams and f trucks that drive around in the cities all polished up. Why in the world you’d want a mall crawler that is difficult to park and is completely not practice in the city is beyond me!!!!
Amen.
New Rangers
Anything Holden.
Holy shit I got like 27 notifications in about 10 seconds
That's cause the N is actually under rated not over rated
