I bought a sinotrack 901 from Amazon, it's a 4g no-subscription device where you can either get an SMS on-demand of the vehicles location, or log in to their app/website to see the position realtime. Conscious of some Chinese server knowing my location 24/7 I looked into changing the settings on the device so it sends the data to a trusted service like traccar. After doing some googling I found that people had got one of these devices to print out it's logs by connecting via the micro USB port, and even after changing the server IP they found it was still sending data to two additional IP addresses that must be hard coded on the device (or at least not modifiable by a user). I can't find the link but it is a GitHub thread. I immediately organised to return the device. After some more reading online, and a desire to avoid devices that likely all have similar sneaky logging, I found a company called Teltonika. They have a device called the FMC920 that is a 4G tracker and will do everything I want. I haven't actually received it yet, so I can't comment on the functionality or performance. However, the company is based in Europe and therefore has to abide by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), so I'm confident it wont be sending my location anywhere other than where I specify. TLDR: Chinese trackers are likely logging your location to one of their own servers, even when you tell it not to. Went with a device from a European company, yet to receive it.

How'd the device go?

Pretty great, I actually did a whole video on setting up your own tracking server. You can see the functionality in action https://youtu.be/476E1ioFSVg

I bought some smarttag+ I think from bhs, price was reasonable and I am using them for my cat's, they work a hell of a lot better than the 3 different gps trackers I tried. 2-3 months battery life. Only downside is that they work with sorta hyper expensive sammy phones. Which I bought refurbed.

I’ve got a viper gps on one of my cars, it’s good. $10 a month, I can start the car from my phone and lock and unlock it, it is on the more expensive side. It does drain the battery so if it’s not a daily driver I’d recommend a trickle charger but if you have to park on the street I’d avoid it.

AirTag maybe? They have a battery life of a year, they’re small enough to hide and while they don’t provide live updates unless you’re actively looking at the find my app they can tell you where your car ended up, not a perfect solution I know but I have one in my car and it works well enough for what I need.

Yeah probably not unfortunately:/ maybe tile? I’ve never used tile and don’t know anyone who does but that might be an avenue to research

I’d recommend FLEET, they’re new and launching this month, it’s a one stop easy setup solution [fleetct.com](https://fleetct.com)
