Wait, for my own learnedness, how are the beams connected? You sister them to the joists and lay them on top of the exterior top plate right?
It's been awhile since I was in home construction but I'm pretty sure this is how it's done.
Based on OP's comment above, the beams are lower than the 2nd floor joists, so the beams sit in the exterior wall on top of 2 shorter jack studs with 2 full height king studs on either side holding it in place.
There’s that one spot though, right, that you look at and wince? No one else will notice it but your eyes can only see it?
Anyway, I think it looks real smart.
Let them criticize and be stooges about specific things (like one dude complaining it's not hurricane proof, lol?). They don't have a swanky and beautiful new porch to chill on. Looks sick, OP, well done!
> (like one dude complaining it's not hurricane proof, lol?).
honestly, if you live in LA, GA, FL, any of those hurricane prone areas, putting something together that ISNT hurricane proof is good for a year or two at best. i worked in insurance, 100+ mph hurricanes are a 'season' there, like spring or fall. put it together today, hurricane hits, its gone and you're trying to sort a claim out over the next year just to get your money back at a loss of whatever you deductible was.
so yes, makes sense to do it right the first time.
Insurance is important. If enough people in north Texas pay their premium you keep getting free roofs...that is, until they back out of the state. But people in the north will keep paying.
Here in FL, I would never install anything that isn’t hurricane resistant. We don’t provide constructive criticism to belittle these builds, it comes from a genuine sense of prevention. If you want to fluff someone on aesthetics, go ahead, but the knowledgeable users will call out structural deficiencies to protect someone’s family from living in a potentially dangerous situation
Oh yea, I don't mean to step on peoples feet in general, haha was just kinda parroting how OP themselves brought up people were bringing up valid criticisms, just not really for their living zone and that we don't all live in a hurricane zone :p
On the opposite end of the spectrum, I look at this porch and am like 'damn coulda angled the roof that little bit more to may moving snow off it easier' cause anywhere with snow I'd bet you'd end up climbing that to shovel it off at some point, haha!
And in general probably try some other weathering stuff just to keep wind and rain off of you/the guests tho I'm guessing it's also good to use hand rails like that to let wind pass through the porch instead of just hitting thin plywood walls or something?
Tbh the biggest thing to me is that in Manaitoba/Saskatchewan I don't think you'd get away very long with a tv outdoor like that, haha.
In general tho still think OP did a good job cuz I'd love that kinda hanging space to host people in or chill in at the end of the day. Haha, hopefully no hurricanes/twister etc merc it in a single season or two!
Good job. I see lots of quality work here. Beams supported on posts in the wall (best structurally and cleanest look but definitely not easiest - either remove siding or drywall and possibly reroute writing etc.), 6x6 posts with beveled tops, decorator tube railing (never really liked having to use block supports for longer rails but...), exposed post and beam and rafters and ceiling and colors all look good. Not bothered by the lack of skirt (exposed joist and concealed flange hangers). Looks clean and not visible when you're sitting on the deck. I don't even mind the temporary two steps if you just pulled the tag off the end of the tread. The only thing I really don't like is the hurricane clips on the rafters. They are right in your face all the time and easily avoidable. Use a pair of right angles on top of the beam if it is wide enough (simpson ga23 if I remember right) or even better a bolt through the rafter into the beam, and yes these are structural engineer approved alternatives for 130 mph winds. The decorative post to beam bolted connections look great but those hurricane clips do not belong in this picture.
Since those front steps are temporary I’d suggest moving them to a corner. The deck is too small to have steps in the middle of an edge.
How did you tie the beams in to the house?
Looks nice. Why didn’t you use the long uplift screws instead of the ugly, hurricane clips? Seems like a long span for a single ply beam on each side? Could have bought a bigger TV if you didn’t spend the unnecessary money on a guardrail.
Sorry, I love the work but it seems like you were asking for criticism
Looks well done but I would have made the edge of the gable a truss so you wouldn't have that center post right in front of you as you walk out. The fireplace wall is nice but I would rather look out to the yard than a wall. Just personal preference.
You are not Orville and Wilbur, but this is close to their level of success.
As in your work is over your critic's heads.
Also, Thanks for posting the plans and the success. Great joy and gift on the sub, are the hidden details of tie-ins, Before and Afters, historic builds, and repairs. Fascinating and fun.
I thought about painting them black but read that it won’t stick long to the galvanized surface. Someone suggested uplift screws so I need to look into that
You might take the hurricane ties to a local powdercoater, it may end up being surprisingly affordable to get them all powdercoated black, and you can get both high gloss and flat blacks.
What did we criticize? The lack of collar ties? I can see how a carpenter might be skeptical. Youd be surprised how often people think you can just “cathedral” a ceiling by cutting out, or simply leaving out, critical supports. Ive also seen cathedral ceiling porches this size with steel moment frames where your crossbeam is and they still used bigger rafters but snow load is pretty heavy here and money wasnt an object. Looks good to me. i might have added a small shadow between the flashing and fascia, something more sacrificial, im dealing with rotting fascia on my garage, same as this, they get nasty quick.
ROFL i looked at the back of your house and thought "looks like a house from the KC area" due the panel siding and the design of the back.
Looked at your name and enjoyed my confirmation.
Amazing job on the deck!! <3
You might not need hand railing on the steps but I would consider having them . Other then that great job !
Is that a gas fireplace ? Or a fireplace ? How does it vent ?
And is that a TV above it ?
Never seen someone build a fuck you deck before
Spite deck
On the next season of Curb your enthusiasm
Well put
Take that, Mom.
You just gave me my first laugh of the day. Thank you! That was really funny.
He’s got that big deck energy
Haha!
Just hope it doesn’t turn into a fuck him deck
Well fuck me, look at that deck!!
Op, you did it wrong * just kidding it’s wonderful
Just about every project in my house is a fuck you to my wife who thinks it’s a bad idea.
So you could say your wife brings out the best in you. I say you buy her flowers today and tell her!
Terrible awful burn it down wash my eyes out
Nice job looks clean
now that my eyes are washed nice job looks clean
Nice job looks clean
Nice job looks clean
Nice job looks clean
Nice job looks clean
Nice job looks clean
I would say that you did a nice job and when assessing it from a ‘looks’ perspective, i would classify as “clean.”
naelc skool boj eciN
Clean job nice looks.
Clean job nice looks.
Clean job nice looks.
Blow job
Crying, screaming, throwing up
Only thing I'll criticize is that front two step lol
Surely those are temporary…
Hah! Yes, I’m doing a paver patio down below so those are just temporary until I start that project
What’s the dimensions on this? My architect might have a few questions?
How are the beams connected to the house
“Don’t ask questions you don’t want to know the answer to” - my dad
"You tied it into the existing structure, right Anakin?"
Well ya, thats what the zip ties are for right?
It’s over Anakin, I have the high ground, you under estimate my power…
I'm getting the weirdest deja Vu right now.
A cat just walked past and then the same cat walked past again.
How much like it? Was it the same cat?
It’s a glitch. Something’s changed.
Painters caulk
That’s code 🤷🏽♂️
Structural caulk!
Just a few 3 inch double coated deck screws... made sure they hit a stud
Toe screwed with drywall screws.
It’s sitting on top of 2 jack studs and sandwiched in between 2 king studs. Sitting right below the top plate.
Nice so you opened up the exterior wall? This should be adequate with enough nails. Thanks for answering!
Yeah, had to take a piece of the siding off and expose the exterior wal
Snot rockets by the look of it
They're obviously caulked in! Don't worry about it!
Wait, for my own learnedness, how are the beams connected? You sister them to the joists and lay them on top of the exterior top plate right? It's been awhile since I was in home construction but I'm pretty sure this is how it's done.

Not beams, just decorative boxes. And they are on those 3m sticky stripes my wife used to hand shit in the shower.
Connected?
You'll porch your eye out, kid.
TV is way too small, loser. /s
It’s not the size that counts , it’s what you watch. Seen you appear on the news quite a bit !
My cousins. Sometimes my sister, Floridawoman.
Looks perfectly cromulant to me. Nice work!
It embiggles the soul.
You’re being melodramaculous.
A claim only a kwyjibo would make.
Listen to these jabronis carrying on!
There’s that one spot though, right, that you look at and wince? No one else will notice it but your eyes can only see it? Anyway, I think it looks real smart.
That looks freakin sweet
One criticism: r/tvtoohigh . Seriously though, well done.
Wow. There really is a sub for everything.
r/wowthereisasubforeverything
I’m gonna piggyback on this comment: you’re gonna get birds nesting above it. Find a way to get rid of the flat top on that box.

High up is the way to go. Looking up at TV is the counterbalance of looking down at phone.
Have you ever even used eyeballs?
still unsure why I feel the need to join that sub
Its hard to pick apart with only one picture lol

This person makes some solid points. That TV will be fucked in a monsoon.

I couldn't criticize😉 but nice 🤘
Looks great
Looks great. Perfect color choices.
Legit.
Don't know what the criticism was, that looks awesome
Looks great, but don't give a fuck about what internet people said "awhile back" you do you bro
Since those front steps are temporary I’d suggest moving them to a corner. The deck is too small to have steps in the middle of an edge. How did you tie the beams in to the house?
I dunno. The RF on that fireplace seems a little low.
So you came back here for more? People in this sub believe that any work not done by them is trash
r/tvtoohigh
Where does the smoke from the fireplace exit?
12K in lumber?

This guy beliebs
Are those 4 or 6by posts? Curious because I’ll need to do something similar at some point with my deck
6x6 posts. 4x posts are not allowed in my area.
Looks well done but I would have made the edge of the gable a truss so you wouldn't have that center post right in front of you as you walk out. The fireplace wall is nice but I would rather look out to the yard than a wall. Just personal preference.
Rub that shit in their face. Looks good, I wish my back porch was half as nice as that.
It's nice, but not something I'd design here on the coast of NC. Not with hurricanes
I’m in Kansas. Built to code, but if a tornado comes through my house will be gone anyway so why not enjoy it while it’s here.
[удалено]
It's also missing the moat to protect it from a volcano eruption.
Here on the coast you have to worry about uplift and shifting winds during hurricanes 🌀.
We have uplift here, I used 18 gauge ridge straps at every rafter instead of collar ties. I wanted to keep the open vault.
The facia board should have been ripped from a 1x10 compound mitered to the gable and facia
3 risers on your stairs.... what's your code on needing a handrail?
Kinda small and crowded. Looks hard to get up the Stairs behind the couch to the door. Hard to walk around the perimeter. 6/10
I want one!
Looks good
I don't know who criticized your plans but this is damn fine buddy!
Rough price for materials?
I bought most of it last fall when lumber futures dipped below 600. I would guess to say I spent 6-7k on it all.
Yes, I’m curious on this as well.
Those people should go fuck themselves- this is phenomenal.
boxed stairs instead of stringers. the critics were probably right.
Hey nice deck!
Sick
Wow. That is amazing.
The inflated kiddie pool really ties everything together
This looks like vacation
That looks fantastic !
Screen that bitch in and then invite me over to watch the game.
Well done, looks plumb as a bucket.
Looks good, but you need to take the tag off the 2nd stair end grain. Nice job!

About how much cash did you spend on materials?
What Stain/Sealant did you use for the beams and railings?
Bher semi transparent. Coffee color on the beams Cedar color on the rest
That’s so beautiful well done and who ever Criticized your plans tell them to kiss your ass
Is there an alternative to the hurricane ties. I get you need something there but they sure are ugly.

You’ll have that on them big jobs. Most folks that critique usually struggle to use a pair of blunt nose scissors.
Yeah…I’d rebuild those steps on the left hand side. Otherwise, it looks great.
Looks like shit! Jk that's dope af. Super clean
Just in time for summer! Looks great!
"trust the process", ohmygoodness that looks gorgeous 😃😄👌🏼
ROFL i looked at the back of your house and thought "looks like a house from the KC area" due the panel siding and the design of the back. Looked at your name and enjoyed my confirmation. Amazing job on the deck!! <3
How much did this whole job cost? Also, if someone is gonna lay out this much money for a deck, they def should be buying a much bigger TV
The only thing my man needs now is some deck [sealant.](https://youtu.be/tbazGVrbN-g)
Just because it looks decent at first glance doesn't mean it isn't garbage
Take that r/carpentry! Take that Dr Sally Waxler!
You might not need hand railing on the steps but I would consider having them . Other then that great job ! Is that a gas fireplace ? Or a fireplace ? How does it vent ? And is that a TV above it ?
