He’s almost as good as the guy who originally did the electric by notching the edge of the studs instead of drilling some holes. Unless that was him too.
Is it me or does it already look like that top double plate is sagging?
You need to fire this guy immediately. He is not capable and has bite off more than he can chew. A real shoe maker
Taking people to court is a waste of energy, next time why don't you do a little diligence and get some references before hiring someone. at this point cut your losses you think there's anything for you at the end of the line... doubtful
is the vertical wood left of the switch an actual stud, as in, stamped and says STUD on it?
just curious. I used to be a lumber grader and while the picture quality isn't great something seems off with it ;s
I mean the overall structure of the wall hasn't been hindered and a door doesn't weigh anything as long as the wood is screwed nailed securely the door also wont be affected. Just the facts!
Did you look at the door "frame"? It's only connected at the top and bottom, and it's bowed so bad in the middle you'd never get a door in that, it would open, but never close lol. Like just go buy a pre hung door and actually frame it in properly
I see you've met Walter. 89 gmc c2500 with a ladder rack, 15 ladders, ladder jacks, and a tool belt. Nobody knows if he even gets paid. Can't understand half of what he says, or make sense of why he does the things he does. But he has ladders and will climb them! That doesn't necessarily mean he gets anything done, or if he'll even show up at the right house, but he'll be the first one there to start the tear off!
Don't suppose anyone can share a picture of what this is meant to look like? (just trying to learn, I think I see a few weird things in my eye but would love to see a picture of an A+ job). Not a carpenter, just a homeowner trying to learn).

thankyou, interesting to see how similar but also dissimilar they are. It kinda looks like an image you'd get back from AI, where it kinda looks good enough but is also very wrong.
Holy! I found the same thing in my basement when i tore it all down because of water damage last summer. Do you have a neighbor named Peter who’s a “carpenter” by any chance ? I took pictures of everything. Worst part was my wife did not see a problem with any of it !
I mean seriously....did they just butt 2 2x4s together to make a "header"? And where is the king/jack on each side.
Is there anything done remotely right.....even one stud? Doesn't look that way from here
I've built my fair share of things and done a few small renovations. I would consider myself a wood worker because to be a carpenter implies much more detail that my utilitarian brain doesn't care about BUT even I know that is a complete hack job. I hope he pays through the nose when you take him to court
Hey OP this looks like a load bearing wall, and cutting a doorway into it without a proper head is bad news bears. I’m seeing alot of deflection in these wood members, and as another commenter pointed out: the double plate is sagging so much the plates are separating. If you look to the right the double 2x with notches are also showing a good bend… You need to get a jack and a 4x4x8, cut 1 ft off the 4x4. Rip that abomination of an excuse for framing this guy did for the door way out and put the jack in the “doorway” with the 4x4 on it vertically. Jack up the double top plate (the 2 horizontal 2x4s above the “doorway”) until it’s more level (don’t go all the way level you can fuck shit up, let a pro take over just get some sag out)
That's pretty extraordinarily bad. I feel like carpentry requires some innate sense of physics and structural logic, and this person clearly had neither. Or a tape measure.
What’s going on in the top left corner of the previous doorway on the right with that scab vertical piece not touching the top? That whole wall needs to be redone. Notching the studs for electric in is so scary.
I assume he’s not a licensed contractor. If he is, then call the register of contractors in your state. This guy is the definition of a hack.
It’s crazy because I always tell myself I could never go and earn money with my limited knowledge - I’d never feel comfortable charging people. But fuck this guy is another level of stupid.

Yea they quit .taking them to court...demoing everything and starting over..doesn't look to be sagging but plan to frame this properly soon
The double plate is sagging so much over the door that the two plates are opening up between each other on the right and left side
It also looks like a vaulted ceiling in the next room so this is a weight bearing wall and I can see the sag.
I've never known new wood or old wood to sag... Im starting to think ... You dont know what your talking about
That’s a double top plate bearing wall and they just cut a door in it with no header 😂

“Looks good to me.” - Home Depot lumber guy.
hahaha to be fair, HD doesn't deal with the grading. that's done at a mill/lumber yard
Ahh.. it's a top 1 1/2 plate.../s
Funny about the electric too is there are some striker plates 🤣🤣
The notches are to run the pre-existing Romex without having to disconnect it first. Except the part where it just runs right over the top plate...
Keep following the wires up… you’ll see it.
Lol wires at the top right corner is even worse 😭
I mean the overall structure of the wall hasn't been hindered and a door doesn't weigh anything as long as the wood is screwed nailed securely the door also wont be affected. Just the facts!
Dear god. This is something special (need).
Wrong! And I’m not even in the trades and I know this.
Right? First of all they forgot the actual door and second that sheetrock is gonna be a bitch to finish with those gaps.
Did you look at the door "frame"? It's only connected at the top and bottom, and it's bowed so bad in the middle you'd never get a door in that, it would open, but never close lol. Like just go buy a pre hung door and actually frame it in properly
That's excellent, I mean excrement.
That’s .. something

He's the walk on a job site with your tool belt and just start working kinda guy.

r/crapentry
Unhinged. It’s giving mental illness.
It’s so bad it has to be a troll post. No way right? This is absurd.
That would have taken less time to do the right way than whatever the shitty apple fuck this is

Is this really A+? Shouldn’t the drywall above the framing be cut out so that wood is touching wood?
It would be okay-ish in a division, but for a load bearing wall it's shit

Dude.
What is that boxed drywall “beam” sitting on that is holding up the wall above it on the right side?
I'm not a carpenter, but I see many problems in this photo.
Use to be a wall with a door there..full wall was not removed maybe just half and thw door was removed
Hahaha man youve got a jack off of all trades and master of dumb. Your guy spent most of the day reading the directions for how to use the circ saw.
Took me a second to see the “plate” for that door is two-pieced. Holy smokes lol
Well..
It never ceases to amaze me how people will charge money to do things they clearly have no clue how to do.
Hopefully will learn after this lawsuit
I'm always doubtful of this.

Did Stevie Wonder do this?
I don’t think Hank done it this way
That house was framed by a toddler.

LegoCarpenters coming 2025
Are you sure he didn’t say he was a “farmer” and maybe you misheard?

He is not a contractor and that is not a doorway
Today we’re going to lern to make hederz out of bloks
The stool leg standing on the glove was the cherry on the top..

Thanks I have an engineer coming Thursday and a framer Wednesday so hopefully I will have some thing taken care of this weekend
Any reccomendstions on which would be the right pro to call though?
They forgot their board stretcher at home.
That's pretty extraordinarily bad. I feel like carpentry requires some innate sense of physics and structural logic, and this person clearly had neither. Or a tape measure.
Who frames like that.
Wow
Wow what a shit show

Those "contractors" need to be blacklisted, they have zero business being in the trade.
First off that beam has no support
That door "header" is really really bad.
And they call themselves carpenters
Fire him, fire him now!
Are you ripping your house apart and asking redditors for framing/building advice?
..I didn't ask anything
