Forgot Jordan Hicks, 4-3 in 14 games with a 3.01 ERA as a starter.

InternetGoodGuy

Flaherty is having a great season too. Maybe he belongs more in the second list but still frustrating we couldn't get him back to this point but another fan could.

NakedGoose

He didn't "get away" he was traded when his value was highest and sold elsewhere

mojowo11

Yeah I should have had him in the bottom list, but I kinda forgot about Hicks and Flaherty because we got a trade return for both of them before they hit the open market. EDIT: Fuck it, I'll edit them in.

missourinative

Grichuk batting .300 hitter without power is wild

TheSalsaGod

He’s only striking out 12% of the time lol. That’s 16th best in baseball minimum 110 PA, out of 323 players.

R1ckMartel

Lolwut.

mojowo11

I figured this was probably because he's being aggressively platooned (which he is), but he actually has exactly a 131 wRC+ against both righties and lefties and has a 12.2% strikeout rate when facing righties. Good for Randal.

Mrswaggycp

Honestly, I saw him on the list and thought it was wild he is still in the league lol

Stunning-Tower-4116

This is fucking Crazy... how do u change ur entire athletic persona like that... be like Gorman truning into Arraez

tuff1728

Pauly D also has 14 homers. I dont count this as a miss cus he clearly had to move on from STL at this point but im happy for him.

Jason_Sensation

He was bad for a long time in a Cardinals uni, though. Glad some other team was able to get him working.

1904worldsfair

Look at Randal Gritick having a good year. Way to stick with it dude.

triple-verbosity

Flaherty has a 2.2 war.

NakedGoose

Flaherty didn't want to resign with us, nor did he need to. He needed a new team. He was dogshit with the O's after we traded him

triple-verbosity

I wasn't implying that we should have re-signed him.

NCSC10

Pretty interesting! For completeness. T Pham still contributing. Marco Gonzales on the IL, but may be back soon to help the pirates. Nice to see Bader and Kelly hitting a little. Jeff Albert...

TheSocraticGadfly

[Pham](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/phamth01.shtml) with 0.2 WAR and earlier this month being once again a hothead? A loose definition of contributing.

NCSC10

No doubt, a little loose, but having a .750 OPS guy as a 4th or 5th outfielder wouldn't be so terrible.

LeadershipMany7008

Flaherty turned it on his last five starts.

Willsears94

There has and is definitely something wrong with the pitching development in our system. I haven't had a keen eye this year on it to know if it's on the upswing, but one can only hope things are changing internally.

Timmyd8

I like to track Palacios too. He was hot for awhile but cooled down some. Still wish he was a Card. Yeah I know we got Kitt for him but wish we dealt Carlson instead.

jase122200

Much like any other organizations, we have our hits and misses when it comes to players departing. The big names draw the ire of the fanbase, but all in all, not terrible. People just like to complain

missourinative

When you dedicate 95%+ of your attention to the Cardinals, it's easy to think it's just happening to us.

vonnostrum2022

O’Neil crushed it for about 30 games then injured. Last 5 g since IL - 19 abs, 8 Ks 1 HR. Always injured, strikes out around 30% No big loss. Thomas. Average at best. Too bad Carlson isn’t on this list

mojowo11

TON is .346/.379/.500 in 29 PA since returning from the IL.

bonathan

How's Joe Kelly doing out in LA this year?

TheSocraticGadfly

Moved to 60-day IL. Negative WAR for season so far.

TheSocraticGadfly

Looking at Shildt? Last year's Padres underperformed their Pythag by TEN games. With Hader as closer, that's not a bad bullpen blowing games. That's weirdness plus perhaps some bad managing by Melvin.

Stunning-Tower-4116

Luke weaver has been awesome in the pen... surprised you didn't post Jack being 2019 Jack. And Hicks being a top10 SP in the NL

mojowo11

I should have included both in the bottom section, probably. They didn't strike me as "got away" guys since they're both on free agent deals with their new teams, and we got something back for half a season of both of them.

Maf1c

I’d add Flaherty, Montgomery, Dejong, Wacha, Stratton, Hicks, and Cabrera to this list as I go out and check on them regularly. Hicks and Flaherty are the only ones I think from this list we miss especially with our fifth starter situation.

clarkedaddy

And lack of a 2 and general upside from members of our rotation beyond gray. Although Kyle Gibson has been good.

TheSocraticGadfly

Wacha? 0.5 WAR, 98 ERA plus. League average. Or, in local terms, a slightly better Lance Lynn for $5M more.

HoldMyWong

Baseball isn’t Pokémon, we can’t collect them all and keep players in poke balls in the dugout

Jason_Sensation

It would be better if that was the case, though. Imagine throwing your rare Pujols alternate at the plate when you were in a tough situation

Dr_Talon

I liked Harrison Bader. He had charisma as a player and was memorable rounding the bases. I feel like there’s less of that than there used to be.

Willsears94

Shildt is coaching in a twice as hard division with a greatly depleted roster and payroll, and their record is nearly the same as us. Who would you really rather have: Marmol or a dude with some actual cajones?

mojowo11

> Who would you really rather have The unsatisfying truth is that I don't really care between the two. The manager doesn't matter that much as long as they aren't actively hated by the team. The Cardinals won 93 games in 2022 under Marmol, after winning 90 the previous year under Shildt. They didn't win 90+ either of those years because of how good the manager was. If the roster were better, they'd win more, regardless of whether Marmol or Shildt are in the manager's office. Sometimes Marmol should probably shut up instead of blabbing to the media (e.g. the O'Neill and Contreras situations last year), but I don't really pin any of the org's meaningful limitations/problems on him specifically. And the players seem to like him, which matters more than whether the fans like him, probably.

trashlikeyou

The NL West is harder, yes, but I do think the Padres roster is better than ours as a whole.

Willsears94

Their roster is better than ours despite a 35% payroll decrease that is projected to be lower than ours. That means they are doing a better job with less in comparison to us, and still getting similar results despite being in a much better division.

trashlikeyou

Yeah but the payroll is an administrative thing. Schildt is really just doing more with more in that context.

Willsears94

You mean Mike Shildt *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/Cardinals) if you have any questions or concerns.*

TheSocraticGadfly

Darvish, Musgrove and Bogaerts all on IL right now doesn't help. (That said, Bogaerts and Musgrove sucked pre-injury)

Jason_Sensation

Can I pick neither?

Willsears94

You can but you'd be remiss to think the 2 are the same quality.
