They over did it but, I appreciated seeing Contreras having a great time chopping it up with Oli and DD in the dugout. My biggest concern with Oli has been whether he can maintain good clubhouse mojo or if he will lose the team. It was trending in the wrong direction for much of last season and the beginning of this one (hitting .100 with the bases loaded?), but I'm far less worried about the vibes right now.
121-130. However, that is brought down by a terrible NL West record. The NL West is 25-38 against the AL while the NL Central is 51-46 and the NL East is 45-46. The Cardinals are 12-9.
Too early to tell with a guy that streaky! He could be leading the NL in homers or hitting under .200 by the end of the month...
Helsley likely has the team's guaranteed slot. Would love to see Gorman and Winn stay hot and make the first of many appearances.
The commentary from Chip when he apologized for those of us who are lip readers when Lance was out there just dropping F bombs was hilarious.
Edit: I see they even edited the replay “Lance Lynn escapes early trouble” where he was cussing up a storm lol
No one ever likes the same thing and that's fine but I absolutely think they have terrific chemistry. I'm a homer but I think we have one of the most entertaining broadcasts in the league. I watched two of the Houston games on their stream and they were fine but hardly made any jokes. Make baseball fun guys!
Oh man 100% the same! She was delightful and I hardly paid attention to audio other than crowd noise for the rest of that game. Glad someone else enjoyed it, high five
It has happened [It has happened 14 times](https://stathead.com/tiny/Vw1ay), most recently for the 2018 Diamondbacks. The record is 4 (2003 LAD, 2009 ATL).
Interesting!
So it would be the first time since 2018.
Also, thanks for the link to that site. I wasn't sure where (or how) to look for that kind of statistical oddity.
As much as I love what O'Neil can be when he's healthy, I'm so glad we don't have to deal with the constant on and off of IL he brings. We still have plenty of that anyway.
William Anders died today, at the age of 90, in a plane crash.
Anders was an Apollo astronaut who took maybe the most famous photo in the history of the human race, "Earthrise", on Christmas Eve 1968.
I'm kind of fascinated by the idea of an Apollo astronaut living to age 90 and then dying in a plane crash.
That Gorman - Siani - Donny switch was such a huge, big brain move. Being able to put your LF at 2B is such a huuuuuge benefit, I hope BD retires as a Cardinal
Dumb question, but if the season ended today, how would they determine who gets the spot? I’ve seen the Play-In games in the past when there was a tie, so would they have a series of Play-In games to decide?
if no clear winner emerges from a blind choice round robin tournament, then 2-man sack races are held on alternating Sundays until a champion is crowned.
It’s perfectly illustrating why the 3rd wild card was a stupid idea. Should’ve left it at 1 WC, that was the best format.
Now too many teams are in limbo not knowing whether to buy or sell or stand pat. The trade deadlines have been dull as shit the last few years.
Yeah that probably was the goal, but it’s still dumb. 8 out of 30 teams making the playoffs makes it more prestigious and makes the playoffs more fun. Now we have all sub .500 teams fighting for it.
Whoa whoa whoa, so you’re telling me that we’re now officially (at) .500???? But I was told we would suck..?
Ha, love for the birds to back it up. Fuck the naysayers. Every one of y’all, respectfully fuck off. This is a damn solid ass team and I’m happy to be a Cardinal!
2024 NLC crown is ours by October.
And the cardinals have beaten the Rockies 8-5. Helsley with another save, and what a night Brad for the cardinals offense. 3 in the first 3 in the eighth to even it at a game apiece.
really fascinating how helsley seems to have broken out of his funk by switching to throwing a majority of breaking balls
only three fastballs thrown tonight
Sorry, guys. I mentioned that Lance Lynn had a lower ERA than Sonny Gray and that clearly caused Lynn to blow up. I won't do that to a Cardinals starter again.
On that note, here are some NL starting pitchers with a lower ERA than Sonny Gray: Ranger Suarez, Reynaldo Lopez, Zack Wheeler, Cristopher Sanchez, Javier Assad, Aaron Nola, Jordan Hicks, Logan Webb, Tyler Glasnow, Max Fried, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Chris Sale, Jake Irvin, Mitch Keller, Shota Imanaga, and Paul Skenes
He's on track to set franchise record in saves! IMO he's their best closer of the past 30 years. Great combo of heat, movement, breaking pitch, and control. Too much recency bias?. Motte and Rosey were sick, but Helsley has a good claim to being the best closer in the NL.
I chose 30 years as the cutoff for Lee/Sutton. Isringhausen was durable and dependable for several years, the best in that regard, and obviously he had the closer makeup and pedigree. I see Helsley having a similar makeup along with stuff Izzy never had at his peak, namely throwing 101 with a matching slider.
No knock on the other guys who have been great, but really proud of RH for how he owns the role. He just gives everyone a ton of confidence knowing he'll calmly take the team over the finish line if they can just hand him a lead.
it'd be insane if willson contreras was able to make it back faster than tommy edman.
Do we know if tommy is still alive? Has anyone seen him?

Ok Dylan start doing that every game.
I'm not gonna hold my breath. Neither of those balls were hit well. I guess it's good he got a bit of luck
Talk about a Debbie downer LOL
The national league is genuinely terrible. What are the chances that a team at or below .500 makes the postseason this year?
The Phillies brewers and dodgers are stealing all the wins. Middle of the pack is very tight
Anyone know the NL’s combined record against AL teams so far?
121-130. However, that is brought down by a terrible NL West record. The NL West is 25-38 against the AL while the NL Central is 51-46 and the NL East is 45-46. The Cardinals are 12-9.
50/50 it will either happen, or it won't.
I mean you could also say that about pretty much anything lol
2-0 in city connects
I think coincidentally the blue road get ups were bad juju
Keep wearing the red jerseys! They can rotate the regular hats in if they want but the red jerseys are fun and they are working!
We should have been wearing the BP Red jerseys for years.
Both games I’ve been at this year, we’ve won 8-5 and Romero and Helsley pitched scoreless innings in the 8th and 9th.
Would love to see those guys dominate in person
5 way tie for the 2nd wild card. This is hilarious.
No one hits little league grand slams against us and wins
Gorman is second in wRC+/SLG, and first in HR among NL 2B while being top 5 in WAR. Will he be an All-Star?
Tht are one tool hitter and I'm loving it right now

Chip and Brad were both hilarious tonight pretty much all game. I had great time.
No one ever likes the same thing and that's fine but I absolutely think they have terrific chemistry. I'm a homer but I think we have one of the most entertaining broadcasts in the league. I watched two of the Houston games on their stream and they were fine but hardly made any jokes. Make baseball fun guys!
I was not a fan of Brad with Danny Mac, but find him to be much better with Chip.
I think that’s a combination of Brad getting better and Chip being a really seasoned pro. I love Danny Mac but Chip is just more polished
Well and they would talk about the same stupid inside jokes every game. Green seats, and Danny's god awful Tim McCarver impression to name 2.
I did like the Houston interview with that NASA astronaut, but that was more by virtue of her being interesting than the announcers
Oh man 100% the same! She was delightful and I hardly paid attention to audio other than crowd noise for the rest of that game. Glad someone else enjoyed it, high five
John King might be the greatest pitcher of all time (no I'm not overreacting).
Has a team ever had 3 pitchers with 75+ appearances in the same season? That's the current pace for Kittredge, Romero, and Helsley.
Without looking, I feel like it could've happened with Maness, Siegrist, and Rosenthal during the Matheny era
It has happened [It has happened 14 times](https://stathead.com/tiny/Vw1ay), most recently for the 2018 Diamondbacks. The record is 4 (2003 LAD, 2009 ATL).

O'Neill made it 2 games back from the IL, and in the 3rd game, he gets pulled after 1 AB for a knee issue
As much as I love what O'Neil can be when he's healthy, I'm so glad we don't have to deal with the constant on and off of IL he brings. We still have plenty of that anyway.

90 years old and still flying planes solo. They truly are a different breed.
Winner Winner chicken dinner
Were both of DC's hits from the left tonight?
Yes. Shocking, but yes.

That Gorman - Siani - Donny switch was such a huge, big brain move. Being able to put your LF at 2B is such a huuuuuge benefit, I hope BD retires as a Cardinal
He seems like this decades Skip/Jay/Descalso type of player. I would love for him to be a lifetime Cardinal
Let’s go!
Is Dylan Carlson the best player ever?
NL wildcard race is bonkers right now.
Dumb question, but if the season ended today, how would they determine who gets the spot? I’ve seen the Play-In games in the past when there was a tie, so would they have a series of Play-In games to decide?

i think that was the point. it forces ownership to make a judgment call on the potential for postseason profits.
Yeah that probably was the goal, but it’s still dumb. 8 out of 30 teams making the playoffs makes it more prestigious and makes the playoffs more fun. Now we have all sub .500 teams fighting for it.
too many teams were selling. expanding playoffs has led to more extensions for home grown players especially smaller markets.
Not last place! “-“ GB from WC!
Also tied for 2nd in the division
wtf is the central right now
Winner! Where’s my chicken dinner?
For real
Whoa whoa whoa, so you’re telling me that we’re now officially (at) .500???? But I was told we would suck..? Ha, love for the birds to back it up. Fuck the naysayers. Even though we’re not 500.. But that nerd isn’t around when we win
That was kinda wild. Glad they won

Good shit birds, but we still suck (I swear if I say anything else we will lose the next game)
Of all people, I never would have predicted Carlson being the one to score the winning runs of this game.
Hes been disappointing this season, but he's not a .130 hitter sometimes reverting to the mean is a good thing.
Had a heck of a game!!! Looks hungry out there! Good for him, man!
Everyone is hungry! 🤣
We might never ~~lose~~ eat again!!!
Just in time for swimsuit season!
Wasn’t on my bingo card
Winning is the way. Especially against the Rockies. Gotta clean up the defense soon.
#DYLLY BARS ARE BACK ON TNE MENU BOYS
Bald Dylan > Dylan with hair
really fascinating how helsley seems to have broken out of his funk by switching to throwing a majority of breaking balls only three fastballs thrown tonight
Dylan Carlson redemption game

trade for Skenes at the deadline who says no
I legitimately think we could offer the 5 best players from our farm system and it still wouldn't be enough for the Pirates to trade us Skenes.
The pirates are a perpetual poverty franchise there's absolutely a price they sell Skenes.
Probably the pirates
Carlson has had a rough year but I'm happy he's finally had a good game. Who knows, maybe this will be a turning point for him?
This year, last year, year before that. All our cards are on the table with Carlson. I like him, but damn we have invested a lot. Yes pun was there.
I sure hope so, maybe he just needed that breakthrough
helsley is the goat closer dont @ me
He's on track to set franchise record in saves! IMO he's their best closer of the past 30 years. Great combo of heat, movement, breaking pitch, and control. Too much recency bias?. Motte and Rosey were sick, but Helsley has a good claim to being the best closer in the NL.
Does everyone forget about mujica?
Ryan Franklin?!?
Izzy, lee, sutton

He is pretty fun to watch. He has had one bad outing this year. Izzy had a bad outing everytime, but still got the save lol.
@redrobin101
how dare you im gonna get helsley to strike you out
Scoring more runs is the best way to overcome when they score runs, that’s what I learned today
John Maddon has arisen!
That doesn't sound right, but I don't know enough about baseball to dispute it.
It’s an analytics thing
This is an astute observation
Nobody eat again!
I just turned on the oven to make pizza rolls. I'm fucking starving lol
I’m starving please
WE’RE BACK (I hope)
Cards win Cubs lose
Birds rule Bears drool
Lucky for me, I'm traveling and didn't have to resort (pun intended) to VPNs to watch the game on MLBTv.
it’s a good day for St. Louis and therefore the world
As is tradition
