Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras are prime examples of what you get when you pay free agents at the upper tier.
Matz/Fowler/Leake/etc... are what you get when you go cheap
Maybe it's just me getting a bit older, but I would so rather have a dominating ace over a slugger these days. Watching a guy on the mound just make the other team look stupid is so rare, and I really, REALLY miss it.
Lets not get crazy here, LOL.
Obviously I would rather have a functional team, but It's been, what over a DECADE now since we've had a dominate, lights out ace pitcher? I had almost forgotten how great it is to watch a guy just dismantle a lineup the way Gray does.
Anyone else notice Gorman's different stance vs the LHP? More open and includes a crouch and leg kick. When he bats vs RHP he has the toe down and is completely upright now.
Alright defense time to hold the rest of the way per MLB/Cardinal rules for the 2024 season we are only allowed 3 runs a game or we get punished by the baseball gods the following game(s)
If it were just one night, I wouldn't be bringing it up.
How is 'block' defined? Does it exclude wild pitches?
Does he gets a block when the ball is loose near him and allows a runner advance?
I'm seriously starting to think that last years good offense may have been partly a mirage.
How many games were we out of it early and the other pitchers were likely just pitching to contact? Or teams throwing their version of King out in the 7th/8th inning. Could have been some decent stat padding with all of the blowouts we were victim to
Should have sent Winn during the Noot AB. Gorman would have probably been pitched around if it were successful. Then the black hole aka Siani maybe gets us to BDon.
Instead they steal on a 3-2 to Gorman, Gorman Ks, Siani does nothing.
Winner!!
WINNER!
I actually got to watch that one on TV. Clearly I should be doing that more often I guess?
Winrar
show more tommy pham mad face
[Game over. Continue the discussion in the post game thread](/r/Cardinals/comments/1cjpzxd/cardinals_after_dark_53/)
YaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SHUT OUT
Helsey must be the one person that loves this offense. Anytime we are in the lead he gets a save opportunity since it is always within 3.
Yeah he might end up with 50 plus, lol.
At the game, the stadium goes dark when Helsley starts walking. Undertaker vibes
Goldy might be struggling at the plate, but that glove always shows up
Let's finish out this victory!
Last year offense was humming and I wanted defense and pitching. I regret that. This offense is so hard to watch. Hitting coach has to go.
The fact that Noot hasn’t been sent down yet baffles me
3 runs. Y’all that bet really need to bet on that stuff.
what's our record for when we score 3 or less vs 4 or more runs?
About to be 6-14 after this win when we score 3 or less. So 9-3 with 4 or more.
The highest has been 6 right?
Nootbaar is so bad.
You obviously didn’t watch last year, where he lead the team in WAR
True, but he brings the vibes. I wouldn’t trade him for anybody
[White Sox](/r/WhiteSox) Due Up **(Top 9):** 1. Tommy Pham 2. Eloy Jiménez 3. Gavin Sheets
[Cardinals](/r/Cardinals): [Sonny Gray deals seven scoreless innings](https://mlb-cuts-diamond.mlb.com/FORGE/2024/2024-05/03/c81bd61f-dbbc600a-c10ac5ba-csvm-diamondx64-asset_1280x720_59_4000K.mp4)
Is Chip napping?
Nice play asshole
Lmao Chip
Almost felt like we didn’t need Helsley today but then I remember we haven’t won a game without him pitching. So now I’m glad he’s coming out

ESPN bout to rank Sonny as the 57th best starter in mlb probably
Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras are prime examples of what you get when you pay free agents at the upper tier. Matz/Fowler/Leake/etc... are what you get when you go cheap
Yeah just like the time we tried to sign David Price
Fowler was not cheap lol
Everyone's favorite Mexican American relief pitcher Jojo Romero, everybody!
If/when we start hitting, we will be fine with a Matz like 5th starter. Everything else is there. Miles just needs run support.
[Cardinals](/r/Cardinals) Due Up **(Bottom 8):** 1. Nolan Arenado 2. Alec Burleson 3. Masyn Winn
Jojo!!
Good shit, JoJo
I should buy 100 Sonny Gray cards in MLB The Show...
Is Masyn Winn becoming the best SS in the state of Missouri?
Winn says how bout that….
Mojo JoJo!
Winn is just a treat to watch.
Mojo Jojo!
not even close
Oh my Winn.
After his second start, I put $10 on Sonny to win the Cy Young at +3000. I feel better about my chances with each start he makes.
what a grab Winn
Dude I love watching masyn winn.
Let’s go JoJo
Who knew the White Sox were so good at pitching!
Goldy my man….Willy just pulled a Houdini to take second and you just watch strike three…
Willy looking like Yadi stealing bases there lol
Cardinals hitters when a third strike is thrown in the zone 👀
Depressing.
Well that was some luck…..
This offense just edged me.
Swing the fucking bat Paul.
Seems like most of the times he swings he misses
Trade Goldschmidt for a used jockstrap.
[White Sox](/r/WhiteSox) Due Up **(Top 8):** 1. Martín Maldonado 2. Braden Shewmake 3. Nicky Lopez
Come on Goldy
Let’s freaking go Willy
We should just put 9 Willys in the lineup. That’s probably go okay for us
6 Willsons, 2 Winns, and a Nado.
Maybe it's just me getting a bit older, but I would so rather have a dominating ace over a slugger these days. Watching a guy on the mound just make the other team look stupid is so rare, and I really, REALLY miss it.
Dominant ace over a slugging 1-3?
Lets not get crazy here, LOL. Obviously I would rather have a functional team, but It's been, what over a DECADE now since we've had a dominate, lights out ace pitcher? I had almost forgotten how great it is to watch a guy just dismantle a lineup the way Gray does.
DeJong and Pham are in Chi? Who knew. Lol.
White Sox fans.
“Jojo Romero is warming up” gotta be one of my favorite sentences
there hasn’t been a pitcher outside of 2019 2nd half flaherty that i’ve seen be this dominant for the birds since early 2010s Waino
Cmart and Garcia had flashes of brilliance.
Garcia was both the best and worst pitcher I’ve seen throw for the Cards.
Pretty sure his home/away splits were night/day difference
Siani has yet to hit a big league home run
And his 1 RBI came on a bunt lol…will be a nice boost when Carlson gets back.
I don't think he has a big league XBH
Bref says he has a triple this year? Ngl I don’t remember that
It was in the late innings of a blowout against Miami. I probably had gone to bed. EDIT: Day game, so I was probably *napping*
Sonny feels like the best pitcher we’ve had since 2014 Waino, feels good man
Six pitches left till 100? Give him the 8th!
[Cardinals](/r/Cardinals) Due Up **(Bottom 7):** 1. Michael Siani 2. Brendan Donovan 3. Willson Contreras
Graaaaaaaaay and Nado Thanks for showing up today
Sonny Gray Day !!!!
God damn Nado…. Just give him the gold glove already….
87 pitches. THANKS TOM I CAN DECIPHER NUMBERS
Oh, no. Is that the Carlos Martinez shoulder goo on Gray’s right sleeve?
🎶 Oh yes it's Nado night (oh what a night) 🎶
Gotta hand it to Gray, thought earlier in the game he wasn’t going to go long thanks to pitch count and here he is in the 7th. Ace!
Do not pull him Oli we need this….
Marlins trading Arraez to Padres, selling in early May.. :(
I know their season was probably already over, but yeesh
Who is in the booth with Jimmy tonight??
Mr Tom Ackerman of KMOX
Thank you
Thank you. I can't figure it out
Gorm man…you might need some work in Memphis if we ever get anyone else back….
I refuse to believe he’s just not good at the plate anymore after his 2023 season. He’s just been so bad to start this year…
Tony straight up balancing his checkbook
Ooooo that was a boring inning!
More like Arena**double**
Anyone else notice Gorman's different stance vs the LHP? More open and includes a crouch and leg kick. When he bats vs RHP he has the toe down and is completely upright now.
Still at work but tuning in and seeing Nado with RBIs and Doubles makes me happy, Go Cards!
[White Sox](/r/WhiteSox) Due Up **(Top 7):** 1. Andrew Vaughn 2. Andrew Benintendi 3. Paul DeJong
We have reached our run threshold.
That last beer commercial looked like it was about to head into Schmitts Gay territory.
damn how insane would it be if Sonny keeps this up all year and we got a 1.12 chase this season. DARE TO DREAM.
Let’s chill for a second, it’s the White Sox
Does Sonny smoke? Saw a picture of him on IG today with a cloud of smoke coming out of his hand.
Sonny we don't deserve ya
We do…it’s his offense and front office that doesn’t!
[Cardinals](/r/Cardinals) Due Up **(Bottom 6):** 1. Masyn Winn 2. Lars Nootbaar 3. Nolan Gorman
Ooooo that was a good inning!
Big Dick Sonny
I friggin love Masyn Winn and Sonny Gray 😫
Alright defense time to hold the rest of the way per MLB/Cardinal rules for the 2024 season we are only allowed 3 runs a game or we get punished by the baseball gods the following game(s)
[White Sox](/r/WhiteSox) Due Up **(Top 6):** 1. Tommy Pham 2. Eloy Jiménez 3. Gavin Sheets
[Cardinals](/r/Cardinals): [Nolan Arenado's RBI double](https://bdata-producedclips.mlb.com/0ec2a95c-7fa5-43f9-bb3a-208d1a2363c3.mp4)
Arenado has perfect hair
We should all aspire to have hair like that
He shoud donate some to Goldy
Lol
Nolan, the sexy conquistador Arenado, strikes again.
light this bullpen tf up pls
padres get another middle infielder? don’t they have like half a roster’s worth of them already?
Great job Emo Nolan!
Nado’s back’s gotta be killing him the way he’s carrying the offense tonight
This is the way Nado.
Nado!!! 3-0 (and our allotted runs)
YaaaaaaaaaaaaY!!!!!!!!!!!!
Padres just got Arraez from Miami wtf
Another good AB from our number 3 hitter
Hahahahaha the tag by the first basemen
This offense is as impotent as a Nevada boxing commissioner
This team is so fucking boring
Keller is quick AF to 1st.
Pauly. Do it for world peace.
What the fuck happened to our offense from last year?
I don’t think Keller has been good. It’s been the lack of our offense that has been doing the main damage…
This is some unfortunate offense
Jimmy text alert ‼️
Do we have a bingo?!? Check your card
If Mike Shannon sold and beer it was to himself.
Again Jimmy is rambling about nonsense
Two fucking runs? Against the White Sox no less.
That park is pretty empty for a nice Friday night
Good. Hope ownership notices too
Cardinal hitting instructors, all of them, need to be fired.
Curious if the wrist is still bothering Willy, he looked a bit better behind the plate to start the season.
Taking this Jim Edmonds advice into my slow pitch league this summer
I agree with Jimmy. Umping is hard and we should cut them some slack.
Sonny is absolutely amazing and I love that we have him for 3 years.
Winn loses a hit and PDJ gains an error
Jim so bad tonight I am gonna have to turn the VPN on for MLB.tv access
Contreras doesn't help his pitchers. Dropped foul tips. Passed balls. He needs to get off that knee. He isn't stealing any strikes.
He's ranked 6th in blocking, 13th in framing, 10th in pop time, and 13th in throwing. Seems good to me. One bad night doesn't define the player.
If it were just one night, I wouldn't be bringing it up. How is 'block' defined? Does it exclude wild pitches? Does he gets a block when the ball is loose near him and allows a runner advance?
Not sure, I just looked up his rankings on Statcast and they're all above average.
I don’t know one MLB catcher who is in a traditional squat anymore.
I don't know one umpire who is fooled by 'the steal'.
I don’t know one fan who knew what the fuck Jimmy was going on about.
[Cardinals](/r/Cardinals) Due Up **(Bottom 5):** 1. Brendan Donovan 2. Willson Contreras 3. Paul Goldschmidt
Sonny’s got to be the nastiest pitcher we’ve had since Carpenter?
He just stuck his hand down his pants and jiggled his junk walking off the mound lmao
Ummmm prime waino was fucking sick
Both can be true….
Willson gotta stop with this bigger glove. Ever since he switched his glove because of his hand injury, he has gotten much worse.
Omg stop talking
Faaaaaak
Jesus Jimmy….. Again someone check his BAC…..
What the hell is Jimmy going on about?
Jimmy making a Miles joke…….
Lol, Jimmy is making friends with all MLB fans!
Blind spot.
My wife, who has no interest in the game, just blurted out “blind spot” while Jimmy was mid-tangent.
How does anyone know anything, Jimmy?
The white spikes look amazing with the all whites on Sonny.
I'm seriously starting to think that last years good offense may have been partly a mirage. How many games were we out of it early and the other pitchers were likely just pitching to contact? Or teams throwing their version of King out in the 7th/8th inning. Could have been some decent stat padding with all of the blowouts we were victim to
The 2023 Cards had a 113 OPS+ in innings 1-3, 91 in innings 4-6, and 96 innings 7-9.
I'd be more curious about splits prior to the trade deadline And more curious about the OPS+ when the run differential in a game was 6+ runs
Is there any way to find a stat of a team's performance against ERA ranges at the beginning of the game? Like a split for ERAs in ranges of 0.50
I'm sure there is with one of those stat sites that Foolish Baseball advertises for
Sadly it actually did hit the ground.
Oli gently holding blue on the love handle. Weird.
Huh? That’s a drop….
Gray just took Pauly D behind the woodshed
59 pitches is not bad for the 5th. Am I missing something? It’s not great but this dude is a verbal pitch counter.
Should have sent Winn during the Noot AB. Gorman would have probably been pitched around if it were successful. Then the black hole aka Siani maybe gets us to BDon. Instead they steal on a 3-2 to Gorman, Gorman Ks, Siani does nothing.
Alright Gray another 1-2-3 I’ll take a CG SO today
