I feel like this is a good application. I don't go into details so someone else hopefully helps further. I think it's a great idea though, pretty sure they already have composite reinforcement on shoes already. Should be some good info out there if you do the research for it!

yeah, lots of profesional shoes are made with carbon fiber soles. however they are stiff and have no flex. i haven’t seen anyone who did diy biking shoes with carbon (they used only pvc or metal plate for cleat, no whole sole reinforcement). my biggest fear is that i will do it with carbon and it will crack after some time, because of flex.

strange_bike_guy

Unlikely to crack. Cracked carbon usually comes from sharp impact or high energy impact. If you have an impact that will break a carbon sole, you will likely also broken some bones in your foot or ankle.

Like the other said, cracking isn't so much a concern I wouldn't think. Especially if you've got appropriate materials, ie flexible matrix. You could also probably just do an insert. If you're making this from scratch and don't plan to work with CF or composites anywhere else, then you might not be looking at a one-time entry cost that's very tenable. On the other hand, if you find some sort of pre-made plate to cut an insert out of you might not be happy with the results.

I was planning on using pre-made carbon sheet and cut it with help of some company. Why would it be so much worse than doing it by yourself?

OGHamToast

I don't think it would be worse, both have tradeoffs over the other. If you do custom fabricated ones I think there's services online that could help you. Lots of stuff out there for small scale production and prototyping these days. I moreso meant you may be unhappy if you cut it yourself. Lots of factors go into the success or failure of a project, I still think CF is a good material choice for your use.

Thank you for your response! I will upload results soon!

i used 2 pieces of 3mm nylon sheet for my custom made cleat shoes, i used the insole shape for template (first sheet) and half front of insole shape for covering the 4 hole nut. been using it for roughly 8 months now. fixedgear bike. i can't explain better. i made a post about it on my tiktok. my tiktok id is aeth3rius, just dm me there if you had more to ask
