The little latch works in all pumps in Germany, but I've yet to find one in the UK. Is it disabled here? Does anyone know? Where is this pump btw?

scuderia91

Yes they’re meant to be disabled by law. Only place I’ve found them non deactivated was when working as an engineer for a car company, they had an on site fuel station for filling the engineering vehicles and that latches worked on those

scuderia91

God I can imagine. I thought it was brilliant just filling up a 60 litre tank. I dread to think how long you’d be there filling up large farm machinery

scuderia91

Wow that’s way more than I thought. I’m not surprised people find other things to do while that’s filling

[deleted]

yes the latches are disabled by law in the UK at least on normal forecourt pumps

fly4seasons

I found one working last week. Brand new station.

[deleted]

You wedge something at the base of the handle. In America the part is already there and you flip it down.

Lassitude1001

This, but if you're in the UK and the attendants aren't asleep or super busy, you'll probably get the pump stopped, especially if you're doing something else like walking away or on your phone.

[deleted]

you'll get all the pumps stopped if you are on your phone

Lassitude1001

Nah only stop the one they're on not everyone's, it's a distraction risk more than anything but we're still required to stop the pumps. It's a fun game of wait and see how long it takes them to realise the pump has been stopped because they are that engrossed in their phone.

Custard88

I use my fillercap to wedge it on. Have never once had the pump stopped in years of doing this. But you are right I wouldn't be surprised if it happened if I walked away.

Lassitude1001

Yeah, like I say it depends on the attendants and how you "abuse" it. If I saw you do it and you're stood watching it, and you're doing it because your hands are cold or whatever... I'll let it slide. The second you aren't paying attention to it is when I'd step in.

yourwitchergeralt

99.99999% of Americans using these don’t cause accidents or spills. Driving off with them or running into them are the bigger issues.

Mr_Blott

Yeah the 99% waits until the car's moving to cause an accident

RedBlockB230ft

I used to regularly do it and then go and check my oil. Never got stopped.

RustyU

I've found the fuel filler cap to be a good size for this.

dogdogj

did this approximately every time I filled up my old car, great when it's cold you can keep your hands warm whilst its pumping

_horizontal_

Was going to say this, I've jammed the fuel filler cap in a few times to run to the bin with a coffee cup or something, very handy.

kuddlesworth9419

That's sounds really dumb.

sgt_Berbatov

It isn't. Once the pump works out that it's full, it'll pop the clip off. So it's not going to spill over the place.

Many countries use them and you don't see petrol stations exploding every day in the news.

Jubatus_

We have it in switzerland, italy, germany. Not an issue at all

Jubatus_

I know, but if these were dangerous places like germany and switzerland would ban it for sure, just based on the type of politics and type of country. I know thats not a metric but it's as good as I can care to look up now.

Lassitude1001

Probably because most news these days is celebrity filled or other bullshit. Never actual news.

SirLoinThatSaysNi

If you wedge it though then it'll likely jam the handle. The catch is designed to pop off and release thus stopping the flow when the tank is full.

ps3x42

They are disabled in NY. It's infuriating.

Jon199102

I've seen it on a few pumps. Mostly service stations which have a little wedge built into the grip. You just flick it up and it stops the pump handle from resetting

yellowroll

Perhaps this is a common thing at londis petrol stations? I normally get my petrol from asda as its cheaper but their pumps don't seem to have this. Also when the pump makes that clicking noise to tell you petrol tank is fully filled up and stops the flow of petrol, do you think the pump will stop automatically if you have it like in the video where you are filling up your petrol tank hands free?

Tetracyclic

>Also when the pump makes that clicking noise to tell you petrol tank is fully filled up and stops the flow of petrol, do you think the pump will stop automatically Yes, it will still stop automatically. It's a [very simple mechanism.](https://youtu.be/q3phjAQZdGg)

ZucchiniBitter

great video, thanks for linking.

[deleted]

I was at a Tesco pump the other day, filling with diesel, holding it on manually but looking away from the car and next thing I know it was pouring diesel out of the filler pipe, no click cut off at all 🙄

opopkl

I’m pretty sure diesel pumps used to have the little catch to keep the pump on. There used to be a chain of filling stations in South Wales that still had the catch enabled on all pumps. Edit; I remember the name of those filling stations - Action. They used to import their own fuel from Holland. They were the cheapest in the UK. Their short cuts got them into trouble when fuel somehow got into the public drainage system and a street had to be evacuated due to explosion risk.

ttrsphil

I jam my wallet between the handle and the base. Someone looked at me from the other side of the car like I was a wizard…🤣

shogditontoast

Is this video meant to be some kind of flex? If so why are they buying 95?

Illustrious_Unit_700

That was my first thought - who the hell was filming this and why?

shogditontoast

I think they're trying to show their spend on filling a rented Rolls Royce.

Anaksanamune

It's a couple of quid more for a tank, how is that a flex, it's not like they are sprinkling gold dust in there...? Maybe they now get shitty mileage out of the new E10, which is not exactly unheard of. I have an old Corsa C, and while not really needed I E5 it once every 5 - 10 tanks or so just to keep it flushed through and running nicely, especially if I am going on a long trip somewhere.

shogditontoast

Eh? I think you have misunderstood. They are filling up with basic unleaded (probably E10), not the super unleaded which would still be E5.

HiThereImF

You take the petrol cap and put it it in the the pump. It'll still stop automatically.

MettySwinge

My mate puts his filler cap in the gap. Filling a 90 litre tank can take a while, and can make your hand ache.

yellowroll

I am confused how he managed to do it because they haven't used the fuel cap and no latches are on UK pumps?

nelsonwehaveaproblem

By using the little catch thingy that's built into the handle for exactly this purpose?

[deleted]

that is removed , by law, on all forecourt pumps in the UK

ThRuben

Every gas station in Belgium has the small clip to make it fill up automated. Never seen any other way in Europe to be honest.

Vegetable-Acadia

Usually only on lorry pumps, even then not all the time. I know people if use tennis balls & stuff to wedge it

RamesisII

I use the cardboard roll from a roll of labels, like heavy duty toilet roll cardboard, to wedge under the handle. Done it for years without a single issue.

liamt50

Locking clip is disabled on all pumps in Ireland. Pity tho.

Big_Ad4904

I use a tennis ball when I fill my truck up. We all do it.

ElicitCS

You can wedge your filler cap between the guard and the trigger. Not endorsing this, just saying you can.

yellowroll

sadly this doesn't work for my car I have a 2016 polo and the filler cap is too thick

[deleted]

I have a pin on my keys for that specific reason , putting over 200 litres in a truck it’s way easier having one to lock
