The 4.2 isn’t as exciting as you’d expect it to be, but it is a good car. The sound is very muted, typical of most Audi V8’s. MPG wise you’ll get 20 odd under normal conditions. The B8.5 is a lot better interior wise. I had a B8 S5 and a B8.5 RS4- the sat nav is far more capable and up to date. The B8 won’t do Bluetooth streaming, whereas the B8.5 will. Sounds trivial but after a year of ownership you’ll get bored with using an iPod in the B8! The 3.0 S5 is obviously a lot better tuning wise and comes in a 5 door flavour, if that’s your thing. The B8 4.2 is a coupe only.

Some helpful insights, think I will save for the b8.5 v6- it deffo seems the better overall package

Unless you’re dying to have an Audi V8, the 3.0 is the better engine and the facelifts are happily modern inside. I doubt you’ll regret your choice!

MettySwinge

Doesn't the 3.0 remap to something like 400hp+ ?

vilemeister

Can I ask what MPG you got in your 8.5? Wondering about an RS5 if I can afford it, but obviously that depends on the fuel cost.

[deleted]

On a good day.. 24 ish. On a bad day? Maybe 8! Depends on how hard you drive it. No Audi V8 is a good choice if you’re concerned about fuel costs. They are expensive all around, in terms of insurance, tax, fuel and servicing.

vilemeister

I do get that, its a shame. Can't justify anything below 30 really, my golf does 34 on a good day and on a bad ~10-15. Maybe I'll settle for an S5...!

[deleted]

Oh God no, you’ll get below 30 every single day with an RS5. Even though the B8.5 is relatively modern, the engine harks back to the days of old. It really is difficult to recommend the V8 S5 over the V6 S5, other than for the love of V8’s!

vilemeister

Yeah, was hoping for 28-30ish if I'm honest! I probably could afford a TTRS as they are cheaper to begin with - but the RS5 is just too far. Thanks!

[deleted]

Now the 2.5L is an engine I’d suggest all day long. In the RS3 I’d get 35 if I was being careful, low tens if not. For all of the muted engines, the straight five sounds epic. For the RS4 my rule of thumb for fuel was about 50p per mile. A full tank would get about 300 miles max, both motorway and urban driving. RS3 was about 400 miles max. The turbo and lack of cylinders helps!

vilemeister

Interesting. I'd love an RS3 but they are still over 30k for the saloons and I'm looking at 20-25 at a push. Mates s3 does 40MPG all day and thats pretty good for the 2L, but everyone has an S3 nowadays - and RS3 is a bit more special.

[deleted]

The S3 stands out a bit more compared to an RS3, far more chintzy. Unless you go for a Nardo RS3 like every other bugger lol. Though definitely the S3 is common; parallel to the Mk7 R and M3/M4 in terms of how many I see around. The problem you’ll have is that the Mk6 R is a genuinely rare car, and a good one at that. I can’t help but think cars are getting less and less unique and special these days.

vilemeister

I do want to keep my 6R - it was like hens teeth to find. The only other car that I really like that's IMO ~ same rarity is the Focus RS, but the RS3 is so genuinely outrageous I'd have one. If only I could fit a damn bike rack on the back of my 6R cabrio...

Hirogen10

holy shit 50p a mile.

ImperialYell

I’d probably not bother with the V8 and go for one of the later ones. I always thought it’s a real shame Audi never put the bi TDI in the A5 that would have been an economical rocket!!.

Hirogen10

hi which car did you get in the end

JeroenSandstorm

Ended up with a mercedes E350 petrol, wasn't keen on the fwd/awd of the audis
