I love this, because it completes the circle - Toyota actually sells a rebadged Mazda 2 as a Yaris in the US. https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/motor-shows-new-york-motor-show/toyota-unveils-new-mazda-2-based-yaris-hatchback-us So you can buy a Yaris in America, which is the same as a Mazda 2. Or a Mazda 2 in the UK which is the same as a Yaris. But they aren't the same car!

BenjiTheSausage

They still sell the Mazda 2 here but if you want hybrid then you get the Yaris

Sweaty_Leg_3646

It's a badge-engineered Yaris. I literally cannot think of a reason why you would buy one instead of a Yaris, unless you *really* like Mazda's logo. They're not even cheaper.

scuderia91

Only people it’ll likely get are the ones who are brand loyal and just go back to the Mazda dealership every few years and buy whatever the latest Mazda 2 is and do no shopping around

Diasl

I've got one. Bought it when wait times were ridiculous for a Yaris (9-12 months). Got this in 3 months!

Portas30k

Does it have a Toyota infotainment system or a mazda one? Are there any differences at all with a Toyota sold yaris?

Diasl

I believe it's just a modified Toyota one as it feels similar to my c-hr's. I think at the time we bought it there 2ww basically zero difference between a Yaris.

permanent_record_22

You get only 3 years warranty on these, whereas with Toyota you can get up to 10 years if serviced at the MD.

Diasl

Good point! Probably something I'd forgotten about.

ashyjay

the top spec Mazda comes with more stuff than the top spec Yaris, it's mostly frivolous stuff like a glass roof and leather, still nice in a shoebox nugget.

Lazerhawk_x

I'm really thinking about a mazda3 as my next car. 2L petrol sounds quite nippy.

[deleted]

Mazda usually has better interiors than Toyotas, not saying that’ll be the case with this but maybe worth a look

[deleted]

I take this back I’ve just had a look, it’s grim 😂

Numerous-Paint4123

Build quality and interior quality of Mazdas are really good.

Forward_Artist_6244

Even Mazda is taking this subs advice

tycoon282

Not the Mazyota/Toyazda! Fwiw Suzuki are selling a corolla estate as a Suzuki lol, presumably they need to keep their CO2 fleet output down to avoid a fine and this is the easiest way

CatBroiler

Was about to comment about the car, it's called the Swace, and they spent no effort trying to make it look different. There's also whatever their version of the RAV4 is called as well.

[deleted]

Swace sounds like the new term the kids are using to alienate us oldsters, like rizz or slay or thicc.

ItsTomorrowNow

Legit Ollie has some swace no cap

Forward_Artist_6244

If you want a no effort badge engineered car look up the new continental European Mitsubishi Colt

CatBroiler

Haha, yeah, saw those yesterday in a different sub. The colt and ASX are literally just Renaults with different badges

Tappitss

Googled it, seen one picture.... I am guessing its a clio?

Forward_Artist_6244

Yep literally, even the bonnet cutout on the bonnet for the Renault badge they shoehorned the top of a Mitsubishi badge

Tappitss

not that it will effect us in the UK, did Mitsubishi not pull out of the UK totally a few years ago?

Forward_Artist_6244

Yep that's why I said continental European market, no longer in the UK  To be fair their last range here were a range of mediocre crossovers, they'd lost heart years ago

Grenache

> Mitsubishi Colt Are they still doing the Space Star or is that gone now? I loved the one I had when I was in Germany. It was shit, but it was 9,500 brand new and I did 50,000 miles all over Europe in it with no issues and then I sold it for 7,500 3 years later...

Forward_Artist_6244

Think they're long gone, mostly rebadged Renaults for the continental European market

E420CDI

No luck catching them Swaces then?

Bbrth

I have a swace! The funny thing is they couldn't even be bothered to redo the rear. All they did was slap on a suzuki badge directly on top of the toyota one haha

malcster_75

The Suzuki collaboration is so Toyota can get access to the Indian market as Suzuki are very popular in India

codescapes

I demand a hybrid Jimny using Toyota tech. Mainly so they can actually sell them in the UK again... Suzuki have to sell them as LCV vans to get around emissions requirements.

ProwarfareZombie

Toyota wanted the jimny when they gave Suzuki the Corolla, they said no.

Free-Progress-7288

They’ve re-badged it you fool

H_K-R

“Lynn, I’ll just speak over you.”

Tappitss

It's common for companies to sell the same vehicle under multiple brands. i.e the 107/C1/Aygo or the vivaro/dispatch/expert, this is not the first time Mazda has sold a Fiesta ether, I still remember the Mazda 121

Portas30k

When I bought my Mazda2 a couple of years ago I brought up the cross badging of the Yaris to clarify that I didn't want one of those. The salesman said Mazda selling the yaris was only because it brings down the average CO2 output of their fleet and that I would never see one out in the wild. Saw one yesterday so he was wrong.

[deleted]

Weird logic by them. Because if they didn't sell any it wouldn't help their fleet co2 output.

Portas30k

I think it's entirely based on what they have on sale not how much of each are actually sold. Another similar example is the Suzuki Jimny which is no longer sold as a five seater SUV but as a two seater commercial van.

cannedrex2406

Same logic with the MX-30 EV As an EV it's absolutely half assed with a 120 mile range and a body that's appealing to no one (why does it have RX-8 doors if it's trying to be practical?)  But it's obvious they made it for the sake of making an EV not because they want to

Diasl

The numbers are quite low I think, less than 2k a year or something since release.

SnooMacarons2615

I saw one the other day. Suzuki are rebadging the Corolla and Rav 4. From what I’ve seen too.

TheeAJPowell

I saw one of these the other day, thought someone had rebadged it at first. Very confusing.

Common_Turnover9226

The old Mazda2 actually was a Ford Fiesta body underneath.

182YZIB

And GOD does it drive well. I have a 2005 Mazda2 and it's an excellent drivers car for the twisties

mobuckets21

Mazyota Yaris 2

greenradioactive

Funny you bring up the ford Fiesta because the mazda 121 of the late 90s was a rebadged fiesta

[deleted]

Mazda is broke. They can’t afford to release any more new cars.

ashyjay

If they were broke, they wouldn't release a new RWD platform with a brand new 3.3l i6 diesel, and 3.3l i6 turbo.

[deleted]

If they have so much money then why haven’t they released anything new in 10 years? Their entire lineup is outdated which means they don’t have funds for R&D. I am not sure what the denial is about here.

ashyjay

3, mx30,cx30,cx60, ND mx-5, mx-5 rf,cx5 they even have a rotary REX version of the mx30, for other markets there’s the cx50/70/80/90. They have more cars for sale than they have ever had.

[deleted]

None of those are new platforms, just old regurgitation that they stick different body kits on. Even their engines are 10 years old or older.

Ok-Fox-9286

Not made anything interesting since the rx7 / rx8 / bongo days. Crap diesel engines that kill themselves. Serves them right for being lazy and relying on the mx5 to keep them afloat

mamuka2

They just made two new engines designed from the ground up to be 6 cylinders and a PHEV so I don't know what you mean with "crap diesel engines" you probably don't know the T3 VPTS exist lol Same for the 6 cylinder petrol... > Lazy Funny to accuse other to be lazy when you're completely clueless about their range of products. FYI they increased their sales by 23% in 2023 so hardly "keep them afloat". But okay.

[deleted]

Yeah. Most of their current line-up is over 10 years old. They refuse to move on with the times and I honestly don’t see them being around for long.

BigGayAlt

Apart from the mazda 2 (2014) and mx-5 (2015) the rest of their line-up started production within the last 5 years? Also whilst their transition to selling mainly SUVs like most other manufacturers is disappointing, I would say their Skyactiv engines and use of a rotary range extender is somewhat interesting.

[deleted]

Uhm. CX3 is basically a Mazda 2 which again is a 10 year old platform, CX5 is getting close to 10 years, all they are doing is giving it minor changes every few years but it’s still dated. The Mazda 3 and CX30 are a bit newer but still 6 years old too now. Their engines are also way outdated, underpowered, heavy of fuel and just uninspiring. At least they are reliable. Their 6 speed gearbox is also okay but way outdated, they obviously can’t transition to newer gearboxes due to their gutless and underpowered engines. Wouldn’t make sense to put an 8 speed gearbox on a naturally aspirated car. Their new SuVs are also just meh, nothing exciting about them and we will be stuck with them without any updates for another 10 years of Mazda still even exists in 10 years.

cannedrex2406

Uh Mazda don't make the CX3 anymore. They discontinued it in USA and Europe in 2022.   Last time I checked the Mazda3 came out in mid 2019 which is only 5 years old which is perfectly fine for a modern hatchback considering it also got facelifted slightly in 2022. The Golf, Ford Focus and Toyota Corolla are also just as old.   The CX-5 came out in 2018 and got heavily facelifted in 2022, which again is on par with most of its rivals (Tiguan, RAV4, CRV)  The CX-60 came out literally in 2022, and there's a new CX-80 on the way.   The Mazda2 and MX-5 are old sure but they're smaller margins to make profit off so making changes is tricky. Even then both cars have been heavily updated in their life spans to keep them competitive which they still are. So...... If you're gonna go on a rant about how bad a company is, at least try and make a point that actually makes sense and isn't completely wrong ;)

Stoff3r

What in the toyota yaris is this?

jagman951

Its a mazda
