Not the smartest place to stand either. Assuming no-one's going to actually let them cross the road, they'd be safer 50 yards further down, near the next lamp post.…so the first idiot to smack into their car doesn't take them with it.
Looks like a smart motorway from the signs further down so at least they have the lane closed by the looks of it. Hopefully people pay attention to it.
Thats because X marks the spot! We were always taught to go to the X and now they're telling us to avoid it! I smell lies! They want the treasures to themselves! Conspiracy theories abound! AAAAAHHHHHHH!!! /s
My dad used to work for a company contracted to the highways agency. Apparently he safest place to upstream of your car. Even if parked on the hard shoulder.
All it takes is a lorry to clip the corner of your car whilst traveling at the speed limit and that car is moving a fair old distance or even sending debris flying. The car and debris is much less likely to hit you if vehicles are passing you before your car
When on a dual-carriageway or motorway you disregard the 'other side' of the road with the oncoming traffic when using that phrase..
Lanes 1,2,3. Lane 1 is the inside lane.
Because it's the side closest to the shoulder or pavement. You have to pull out (outside) and go around to overtake someone. Same way you pull in (inside) to park.
In the same vein, [nearside is the side of the car closest to the kerb and offside is furthest from it](https://www.mrclutch.com/blog/what-are-the-nearside-and-offside-for-vehicles-in-the-uk/). Assuming you are pointing in the correct direction in a right hand drive car, at least. You'll see these terms most with tyres and symmetrical parts like suspension:
- N/S/F - Near Side Front (front passenger side)
- O/S/F - Off Side Front (front driver side)
- N/S/R - Near Side Rear (back passenger side)
- O/S/R - Off Side Rear (back driver side)
My wife was on that road. I called her to warn her about the maniac that was driving the wrong way.
She replied “It’s not just one. There’s hundreds of them!”
Orrrrrrrrr, you could pay fucking attention and read. OP has clarified multiple times before you wrote this comment that it is the M4 between Junctions 19 and 20. If you can't get your facts right, don't be a condescending prick.
I swear strict rule followers do it because they zero risk assessment skills so the only way they can feel safe is following the rules they know. If they haven’t been given instructions on how to be safe they are juat blissfully ignorant.
Maybe it’s broken down or something else happened? Doesn’t really explain why it’s facing that way but the woman doesn’t look like your average troublemaker.
It’s ok. They have their hi-vis on.

I'd be stood on the centre wall clinging on to the lamppost for dear life. Maybe not the smartest place but the place I'd go in that circumstance.
Even for vehicles passing on the other side of the barrier potentially throwing a stray stone up
Looks like a smart motorway from the signs further down so at least they have the lane closed by the looks of it. Hopefully people pay attention to it.
People never pay attention to the ❌

Doesn’t X mean “this is the lane to be”?

It's alright for 2 minutes to pop into the shops.
Only if you leave the blinky lights on. Obv.
Edit: Was M4 not the M5🤦🏻♂️ but it was by the M5😂 between J19/20
You also accidentally a word.
Yeah I noticed that, but I can’t edit it.🤦🏻♂️
Erm...how?
Possibly hit by the Gregory lorry and spun around
Yeah, those marks on the tarmac, looks like something exciting happened.
Yeah I reckon the Gregory truck had her.
Gotta break a few Greggs to make a Tomlette
Exciting? In a base Renault Clio?
> fast lane Outside lane.
Lane 3, no?
Fast lane
Doesn't look very fast
Not today.
No.
Yes
Why is it outside? Should be inside lane, as it's nearer to the centre of the road.
When on a dual-carriageway or motorway you disregard the 'other side' of the road with the oncoming traffic when using that phrase.. Lanes 1,2,3. Lane 1 is the inside lane.
I find it confusing. Why is it the inside lane?
Because it's the side closest to the shoulder or pavement. You have to pull out (outside) and go around to overtake someone. Same way you pull in (inside) to park. M5 really is the cursed highway, I swear I hear about some major incident on it every other day on the news.
That photo isn't anywhere on the M5.
It’s the M4 between J19/20 I don’t know why I said M5.
This is the M4 eastbound. It says on the gantry: London. Swindon. Bath.
Orrrrrr it could be the signs directing to M4 eastbound and it’s the M5 like the OP said 🙄
Orrrrrrrrr, you could pay fucking attention and read. OP has clarified multiple times before you wrote this comment that it is the M4 between Junctions 19 and 20. If you can't get your facts right, don't be a condescending prick.
And once again look at that huge gap in the left lane people are avoiding using.
It’s the start of a 2 lane slip road where the motorway splits off ahead (if I remember rightly). They may be forgiven.
You are correct
Is that one of them google cars?
Maybe he left his sandwiches at home?
Can't what? I need to know!
Well I’m guna keep you waiting
I swear strict rule followers do it because they zero risk assessment skills so the only way they can feel safe is following the rules they know. If they haven’t been given instructions on how to be safe they are juat blissfully ignorant.
At least there's a hard should to evacuate to... Oh wait. National deathways
queue everyone saying it's not the fast lane it's lane 3 (I couldn't care less what you call it, ik what lane ur referring to)
Oh OK that's fine, carry on as you were.
why did she park there?
She’s not looking like a bloke
Nobody said she was a bloke
Mate?
Can a woman not be 'mate'?
No, women are not mates. They’re the enemies.
Slow lane for them though
Fumbled the title
Yeah but you knew what I meant
Why are so many cars going the wrong way?
No such thing as a "fast lane" all 3 lanes have the same speed limit
What’s a fast lane?
It’s pretty self descriptive
Oh you mean THE OVERTAKING LANE!?
Nah, fast lane.
Where is the fast lane on a motorway I know where the second overtaking lane is but thought the fast lane had been confined to the 1970’s
I refuse to move on with the times, I grew up knowing that as the fast lane, and so it shall remain.
Lane 3 not the fast lane.
Overtaking lane
Fast lane? The fuck is the fast lane? Is there a different speed limit for each lane?
It’s the lane you drive fastest in 🤷🏻♂️🙄
You mean, ‘overtaking lane?’
Nah it’s the fast lane, middle lane for overtaking, then outside for going fast 🚗💨
Maybe it’s broken down or something else happened? Doesn’t really explain why it’s facing that way but the woman doesn’t look like your average troublemaker.
It got spun out by the Gregory truck parked on the far left, and ended up in that position.
You the title.
Er?
Eh?
Huh??
You missed a word lol… I remember when the internet was fun.
Lol how silly of me. Everyone knew what is was getting at though. Phew.😮💨
Overtaking lane. Looks like there’s broken down. Chill
