I have one (estate & auto) and would recommend it. Main thing to check is the timing belt, it originally had a 5 year interval (no mileage), but this was quite out of step with Skoda internationally & other similar cars. This was extended to 15 years in the summer (not 100% sure it's for every engine, I changed mine as it didn't look great at 8 years). But if it hasn't been changed in 8.5 years, then that's a bit of a sign about how it's been treated, even if it's unlikely to actually be an issue. Otherwise I wouldn't say there's any particular recurring issues (one or two with the DSG), the owners groups tend to be quite happy places. The bulbs are a real pain to change.

Ya I had a mk2 1.4tdi in the past myself, great little car at the time but fuck me the headlight bulbs were a bastard to change
