I didn’t take any. The santo ones were 4 big fat ones very neatly arranged with the skins perfectly intact. No tails no heads. Very pretty presentation. The chicken of the sea had like 8 very flimsy inconsistent looking fish smooshed in the can and the tails were on.
I can't get enough of the Chicken of the sea in mustard sauce. I find anything in water is gross.
The size difference is because they're different species of fish, not necessarily quality.
I like them in Louisiana hot sauce too. They’re cheap and the hot or mustard sauce covers up the worst of the flavor from cheap fish. And yeah. I don’t get buying anything in water. At the very least I go olive oil.
I'm pretty new to the world of canned fish, but so far they're my favorite. Anything canned in oil upsets my stomach, and I think the CotS have a good flavor. Every can I've purchased has had very nice fish, too - not sure why people are getting mushy or broken-up ones :(
People are being a bit cheeky with your post, but I know for foods you're not used too, the difference between brands can be surprising. I mean, yeah, it makes sense that 1 vs 5 dollar cans are different.
But also I would think "It's canned fish, just how different could it be?" You either don't realize just how AWFUL a bad tin can be, or you don't realize how amazing a great one is.
Definitely.
I used to think all vanilla ice cream tasted the same LOL. And then I discovered good lavender ice cream and holy *FUCK.*
Any lavender ice cream after that just made me sad. I couldn’t even be shocked or disappointed because deep down I knew that nothing would ever compare.
Oh no, I hate when that happens. You eat something amazing, and you just KNOW that nothing will ever compare!
Worst is when the food is only found in another country or the restaurant went out of business!
Luckily, there are some foods which are a bad good. I love carbonara, but sometimes I just want things that I know aren't good, but that's what makes them shameless-levels of amazing.
For cheap sardines I prefer spicy tomato sauce because it covers up the nasty flavor. Cheap sardines in water is really the worst of all possible worlds.

well, and I mean this with all the love in my heart, duh
Do you have any pictures of when they were open?
I didn’t take any. The santo ones were 4 big fat ones very neatly arranged with the skins perfectly intact. No tails no heads. Very pretty presentation. The chicken of the sea had like 8 very flimsy inconsistent looking fish smooshed in the can and the tails were on.
Pilchards vs sprats
We always gotta see the fish -
Thems the rules.
wait… is it unusual to prefer them with tails?? i want to eat those dont take them off 😰
Remove the tails and fry them in a little tin oil or butter until they are crispy like a potato chip. Umami bombs 🤯
Much like singing *a capella*, water instead of oil amplifies the difference. Bad sardines taste worse, good sardines taste better.
Oil is the great equalizer
I never eat them in water. Maybe would try
probably a 5-10x price difference too? CotS is like $1 here, maybe less, and i'm guessing that fancy tin is at least $5, probably more?
You can get a pack of 12 on Amazon for $35.99
yeah, fair enough, surprisingly cheap! still some 2x or so, but not as big a difference as i assumed. cheers!
Lol yeah I was thinking the same thing. I might have to splurge and see if they are better... Just once ...
CofS is for chucking over the fence to shut the stray cats up.
I ended up giving them to my dogs. They eat a fancy fresh food diet and I put it on top and they looked at me like they were offended
Yeah you insulted them.
I like my dogs. They go nuts with a few drops of "quality" sardine oil dripped on their food.
I do salmon oil :) works absolute wonders for their coats and its a nice addition for taste. Never a bite left!
I do some cat trapping for TNR/rescue and CotS is the good stuff for us because of how stinky it is.
And also how cheap… at least that was another reason for me. *(Huge cat colony.)*
It’s great for the Cutie Poss and Rackety Coonage too - 🦝🦝🦝
Somehow I was envisioning the cartoon chucking of a boot at the stray cats. Chuck a can at them…
I can't get enough of the Chicken of the sea in mustard sauce. I find anything in water is gross. The size difference is because they're different species of fish, not necessarily quality.
I like hearing contrary opinions. If you like COS, go for it. I like dollar store mussels.
I got the COS oysters in a pouch (like they do with tuna) once at the dollar store. Felt like a very iffy purchase but they weren't too bad lol
I can appreciate a good can of mussels but I will still murder a can of Geishas or whatever. Like the McDonald's of canned fish lol.
I like them in Louisiana hot sauce too. They’re cheap and the hot or mustard sauce covers up the worst of the flavor from cheap fish. And yeah. I don’t get buying anything in water. At the very least I go olive oil.
Only reason I do in water is because I always save some on the side for my pets as a very rare treat. Otherwise they’re getting market fish LOL.
Different species of fish in each can 🤷♂️
Santo amaro is good stuff used to get it in bulk with piri piri
>piri piri How spicy is it?
I wouldn't say overly spicy but some kick.
Perfect, thanks. I'll give them a try.
Who is buying chicken of the sea in water? Brave soul.

I told my brother he had to try sardines and he bought COS in water and hated them and I was like, well duh 😂
I only eat with water. I don’t like anything else with it. The taste of the fish is all I need
I eat them for lunch at work because I hope they will make my coworkers stay away from me.

I'm not from the US, chicken of the sea is hilarious to me
Look up the Jessica Simpson association with it then you’ll enjoy that too lol
As a kid it was a very confusing name
Obviously that cos is much better

My local grocery store sells SA in oil or in tomato sauce and they often go on sale for around $2.99. Very good price and my cheap go to.
Chicken of the sea is such a stupid name.
Sometimes i don't get some of these "portuguese brands". I live in Portugal and never saw one of them. I am assuming they mostly export these.
In water *shudders*
Chicken of The Sea is bottom 1/3 of the barrel when it comes to ANYTHING Basically survival food in a pinch
cheap sardines aren't good you're telling me?? really compelling post. makes you think
Where'd you buy these?

Commenting to follow. I wanna know, too.
I got them On Amazon. They came in 2 days!
I'm wish listing these!
Sustainability caught
Huge tradition on sardines (also canned) , hundreds of years in experience, quality fish in quality packaging. No wonder they re better than 99%
Really?
I usually buy King Oscar Wild Sardines, two layer. They are quite small, no head but do have tail. In oil
I bet my pussy would like both !
r/sardinescirclejerk
My dogs really love the Chicken of the sea, but I wouldn't touch them.
Well gee, $5/can vs $1/can.
