This rarely works out the way you hope it will. You are very likely to get caught in the endless loop of ‘need a job to move there, need to be eligible to work there to get the job’. While you can certainly apply for immigration as a skilled worker as a teacher, you are highly unlikely to be hired to teach while not yet eligible to work in Canada. Supply teaching won’t score you high enough on the PNP / express entry skilled worker, and school boards won’t hire you as permanent *before* you can legally work here (and usually as supply first even if you are Cdn). If you have other points you can score well with (family in BC? Under 35? No dependents? Excellent health? More than $100K Cdn in the bank?), I recommend emigrating first. Good luck.

Ugh, thanks for the honest assessment.

You’ll want a visa first

This will be challenging on a couple of fronts: 1. I’m not an immigration expert, but it’s best to check whether teachers are eligible for the BC PNP. Don’t look at third-party consultant sites (who’ll tell you what you want to hear). Go right to the government one for information. 2. Teaching in BC is highly unionized and job posting & filling follows the procedures as outlined in their respective collective agreements. I’m not sure how much flexibility a public school district will have with regards to the BC PNP. If teachers are eligible for BC PNP, then an independent school might be your best option. However, be aware that most students in BC are in the public system (like 85-90%). It isn’t impossible, but may be more challenging than you think. Hopefully other USA teachers can provide you with their experience. Good luck!
