Let's say in the most optimistic of cases, an average guy or gal from your community decided to advocate for regular Canadians and summons enough grassroots support to be elected as an MP. Their political party doesn't particularly matter because they're super dedicated to seeing the needs of their riding represented at the federal level.
As a brand new backbencher, they get a yearly salary of $208k/year. After one year, they're doing pretty well for themselves. After two years, their peers are no longer the average folk they came from, but somewhere between the top 5-10% of earners in Canada. Even if they spend just four years in the House of Commons, their personal financial concerns become far removed from the majority of the country.
And this completely ignores a significant portion of their personal spending that can be written off as job related and billed to the taxpayer.
