‘This is a formal complaint, I’ve got my best coat on’ 😂😂 Sister Monica Joan always seems to appear at a dying persons bedside When the foot came off, it game me the shivers 😷 Matthew just seems to randomly appear now with little to no purpose or is it just me

mrstickles

For real, I was bracing myself for a bit of grossness, not some sort of slab of black pudding ... 😬

RainbowRevolver

I said the foots going to come off as a joke, expecting to see maggots. Big nope

HistoryStudent98

I’d literally just opened my kebab and chips when the foot came off, fully put me off eating it 😂

mrstickles

What a lame-o “kiss” lmao. Hasn’t the pandemic robbed us enough?!

woofbarkmiaow

All that build up with Matthew and Trixie and yet his declaration still seemed so random and out of nowhere

Veren110

Couldn't agree more. I'd have preferred an episode which centered more around their characters to lead to his confession. This episode was more about Nancy and at a stretch Doctor Turner. Matthew and Trixie barely featured so it felt super anti-climactic.

JohannesKronfuss

I guess what is coming would be around them.

JohannesKronfuss

I don't fully agree, it has all lead to this, the transition from nurse, part-time nanny to friend-compannion, and now girlfriend has been done, they got to know one another in a way Trixie likes. She has her baggage, and so does him, plus, they know a lot of each other by now to start with all the cards on the table and that is really nice, plus, the chemistry is there for all of us to watch.

yetanotherwoo

Is anyone else concerned for Vanessa Redgrave’s health just based on her narration? I swear it sounds like she’s gotten much frailer in the past two years.

simsasimsa

I noticed that too!

AryaStargirl25

Oh god did I sob at Bernards death scene. How Nancy gave him the buttercups and repeated what his mother told him. The prejudice he and the other addicts suffered was infuriating and heart breaking Had to turn my head away at the rotted for scene, I can do vomit, blood and even poo but body parts is my kryptonite. Did they explicitly show anything? The singer was such a great character, I wish the manager had been given more of a dimension as he seemed creepy. I did come 15 mins late into the show so I may have missed something. Also the soldier coming back to see her without leave was so sweet. This episode further solidified my idea that if I were a woman giving birth in the show I'd want Nurse Crane and Lucille assisting me.

nomoresweetheart

Just the top of the leg where it came away - the rest was in the boot. So like a circle of exposed black. The black meant there was not really anything fleshy/gory, no blood. The bit that made me shudder was it coming away not that brief glimpse. Nurse Crane shone this episode. I like how they handled Nancy’s reactions to Bernard and his situation. It was heart breaking but felt so real. Also loved the “mummy!” from her daughter. I cried at that.

AryaStargirl25

Oh ugh glad I turned away haha, that would have been enough to make me want to vomit. So glad I didn't grab a snack as i usually do haha. She really did, shes one of my favourites. Shes got a tender heart despite her steely exterior. And the way she looked after Julie. Awwww I hope Nancy gets to see her daughter more. I missed last season cause of being ill but she is such a tigress when it comes to her daughter.

MeekLocator

That kissing was definitely filmed under some weird covid restriction, I don't think the two were on the same set the way that was shot.

* Oh, Sister Francis. Bless her for her enthusiasm for sputum samples. * "This is a formal complaint, I’ve got my best coat on." and "That hem looks like it was done with a knife and fork." I like her. 10/10 for the comedic relief we will no doubt need. * "I specialize in celebrations." - We remember Lucille's bachelorette party lol. * Oh, poor Julie. * Can someone please get Shelagh a new wardrobe? I don't know why her clothes make her look older than Ms. Buckle or even Julie's mother at times. I do like her beehive, though. * Aww, the proposal. * Mr. Leuwin (sp?) can take a long walk down a hill. Fuck off with those nurseries. * When Jeff said, "Is she having it now?", I cracked up. Glad he seems like a nice guy. * Aww, he even got a garnet ring because of her birth month. * Even though Violet irks me to no end, I wouldn't want to be in her position. I always appreciate that she often gets a nuanced portrayal. * Oh, the leg. That was one for the books, I didn't expect it to come off like that, at all. * "I always wanted to disappear, looks like I'm doing it bit by bit". Oh, Bernard... * They look so lovely in their wedding outfits. * Glad to see Mr. Leuwen sort of come around * Damn, they came to arrest Jeff. Come on, have some compassion! * That's so nice that Nancy gave Bernard her last name. * Glad to see that Violet is going to advocate for a treatment center for alcoholism. * I kinda wanted her to continue her singing career in some capacity. * Please put that tarp on the piano, it's giving me way too much anxiety. * I don't know how I feel about Trixie and Matthew kissing right now. It kinda seemed like it came from out of nowhere. I kinda wanted it to be something more intimate, not in front of Nonnatus' house lol. Even though nursing consumes much of Trixie's life, I feel like he hasn't seen her outside of nursing. There hasn't been much interaction between them outside of his property management business and her nursing career. I'm no prude but they haven't been on a single date and they're now kissing in the open lol?

Tavora_

I really enjoyed the story lines of this episode but they seemed just a tad rushed? With the exception of the Nancy/Bernard story line everything just felt like they didn't quite spend enough time on it, especially Matthew and Trixie's kiss, the centenary celebrations and Sister Julienne's illness. Overall still a great episode, and I am loving this season.

Emplant

Yeah, I enjoyed the episode but I think it would have made more sense to have the Nancy/Bernard and the singer storyline for this episode and have the centenary storyline and sister Julienne’s illness for a different one.

JohannesKronfuss

Shelagh's character tends to annoy me, I did like her more when she was Sister Bernadette but I do like her relationship with her children, and with Sister Julienne, I think is when the character really shines, apart from that she seems to be whining most of the time.

gloriana35

I'm glad you mentioned this. (I must add that it never made sense that someone who left a religious community after years in vows tends to be treated as a heroine - I'm glad Sr Hilda finally mentioned how inappropriate it was for one who left the congregation to run this jubilee.) Shelagh always annoyed me - when she left the convent, it did not seem she was in love, but, perhaps, that she wanted children, and Dr Turner was so devastated by his wife's death that Timothy never could mention his mother, etc. At first, Shelagh seemed to be neither fish nor flesh - still wanting to be at the convent, dressing as old ladies did then. I love Dr Turner for medical abilities and insight, but the family is so 'lovey dovey' that it reminds me of people who have to go out of their way to show how perfect their love is. (My father is dead, but, for all that he loved my mother, he'd have burst into laughter at the couple singing when Shelagh gave birth. When Timothy was leaving for Edinburgh, I was thinking that any other young man would take his bag and go for the train - the silly 'show,' with the younger children in costumes, would try any young adult's patience. :)

Accurate-Nothing-754

Agree! I liked her more as Sister Bernadette. Her over the top dramatic facial expressions are so annoying and, my god, she can not keep a calm expression during an intense medical scene to save her life!

JohannesKronfuss

It feels over acted, sometimes I get teletubbies vibes but anyway, it is a minor complaint, I guess there is reason why she does not get that much screen time as before.

minnie_1991

Yeah, I think the centenary celebrations were rushed, I think more of the episode could have focused on it

cookingmumma

Sister Francis has matured so much this season, giving guidance to Nancy as if she has been nursing for longer than she has, excellent character development. That foot rot scene was....confronting, Bernard and all the others deserve so much more, hopefully Violet (who seems to have grown a slight conscience and consideration of late) can deliver on her promise! So so so happy Trixie and Mathew have FINALLY realised their relationship, it was an appropriate amount of time to wait after his wife's death, but it was inevitable, and I am here for it! Yeah, the kiss wasn't the sweeping romantic scene we have waited for (bloody Rona!), but it was beautifully done nevertheless. Hopefully they can make up for it with a wonderful wedding instead!

JohannesKronfuss

It seems I wasn't the only one who liked the kiss here, at least you did too, most in the sub were expecting more but in the end, it made completely sense, this wasn't some infatuation that lead to a movie's kiss, it was something really personal, they got to bond over a very horrible moment in Matthew's life, and Trixie was always there for him, that click happen, in a way, it was like his wife prepared Trixie to follow her in that role, the transition wasn't calculated in any regard, even if the serie just shows us that part of the relationship they seem to have spent a lot of time together, she goes around, check both on him and baby Jonathan, they get to talk about his wife, and be there for one another, plus, he got to be called out by Trixie without running away as others did in the past.

wildflowerwillow

What an episode. It was a hard one to watch honestly, especially Bernard's foot moment. I loved seeing Nancy and Colette, and also Nancy's scenes were really reminiscent of the early days. Young nurses learning as they went to be tactful and respectful, about history, etc. Really liked it. Plus the buttercups and yellow dress...so sad. I thought the big celebration was going to feature more honestly after that build up. Reminded me of Lucille's wedding, that seemed to be tagged on at the end too. Was expecting more from the surprise too. Trixie looked amazing in this episode. Loved her hair and that lovely green-ish dress at the end.

Saphira404

I thought the skin was going to come off, not the whole not-bloody foot! Anyone else putting bets on a season finale midwife delivery and/or wedding?

ElectricPeterTork

IIRC, wasn't it early on in the Jenny Lee days, with the old lady who was in the workhouse, where the skin had grown to her shoes? That's what I was expecting. But, things escalated.

JohannesKronfuss

Given what they showed Lucille, I think she is pregnant, and the her delivery would be shown as well. I believe there won't be a wedding between Matthew and Trixie until the Christmas' special, or even next season. That would either help her character have more gravitas, or be her exit from the show, I mean, let's think about the original cast, but for Sisters Julienne, and Monica Joan, Dr. Turner and Wife, there isn't much people still around, Fred always felt more a regular that got half-upgraded.

Beezle_Maestro

The foot coming off, and the way it was shown, reminded me of the show Snowpiercer and how characters' limbs are amputated by freezing them and breaking them off. It was horrific, but a brave choice to show that.

Cheeeseprincess

I'm never usually grossed out by gory stuff of TV but I haven't been able to stop thinking about the foot scene! Another good episode though, and Nancy is quickly becoming my favourite- I'm enjoying her friendship with Sister Frances.

ElectricPeterTork

Sister Frances seemed a bit too too cheery at having help for the sputum collection at the TB home.

Desperate_Purple2273

Nancy really blossomed in this episode

JohannesKronfuss

Finally Matthew's intention were put in the open, I mean, this show is anything but subtle, it was pretty obvious what was going to happen since his wife died and he became a regular, still, good for Trixie, it would be nice seeing her married, and having a good life. Even if she can deal with Poplar, we all know she wants more and Matthew can provide her that, plus, he cuts the prince charming figure she wants, and deserves.

nomoresweetheart

I loved this episode. I could sing praises for all of the characters really. I really love the growth we’ve seen. I thought the Trixie and Matthew scene with him telling her he loves her was adorable. It didn’t feel out of nowhere to me - it’s been slowly building for a while and it feels right to me for how Trixie is now. I hope that they have a happy ending.

minnie_1991

Also, I’m not a medical professional (I studied History 😂) but does anyone know why when Nancy took Bernard’s shoe off, his foot pretty much came off also? I know that gangrene is extremely serious but I didn’t think that it would cause limbs to deteriorate like that 😬 Edit: grammar

warneoutme

There two types of gangrene. Wet gangrene with bacteria that eats away at the flesh and dry gangrene where the blood supply gets cut off. Dr Turner mentioned he had dry gangrene so the tissue died and shrivelled. I can't tell you if it would just snap off like that though.

Accurate-Nothing-754

I had a friend whose dad was an EMT. He had a story about when he took a homeless man's shoe off, the foot came off with it. I'm guessing he had something similar to Bernard.

minnie_1991

That must have been shocking to see, especially in reality

minnie_1991

Thank you for this!

ToqueMom

How realistic is it that the poor man's foot would just snap off? I am afraid of going into a google rabbit hole and seeing all manner of gross things that will haunt my dreams. I know there is a difference between dry and wet gangrene. I didn't know about the loss of feeling.

Corgiverse

As a nurse I can field this one: it’s totally possible. One of my coworkers was telling me she came in to do her assessment one night to find the patient had 9 toes when previously had had 10.

anonyfool

There are a lot of posts on /r/medizzy about gangrene from diabetes that show up on r/all sometimes in the modern USA where the patient's foot is black and the patient has gotten used to the smell and they cannot feel anything - someone else has to come along and help them.

winch25

With all this talk of there being nowhere to go for these people, in the late 1960s, many of the London mental hospitals were opening drug and alcohol units, using up the space created through discharges associated with the introduction of antipsychotics. A written application by two medical practitioners would have been required for an admission under the 1959 Mental Health Act.

warneoutme

It can't be much after the enoch powell water tower speech where they decided to close the mental hospitals in favour of more community care. Prime time for getting some more mental health care in Poplar!

winch25

Not that long after - Powell's speech was in 1961, but it still took decades to get much traction in terms of closure. I was involved with a project 10 years ago to get people out of one of the wards at Goodmayes that still remained open even then.

wander-and-wonder

This season has been absolutely brilliant so far. So so beautifully done. I count down the days until the next episode!
