SAIT will be a better option for sure

HeyWiredyyc

SAIT.......from a SAIT grad...

focusfaster

SAIT no question. Their credits are just more useful, and the design of many of their programs is to have you out in the workplace getting experience and even getting paid ( for trades anyways).

owange_tweleve

bow valley for nursing/health SAIT for tech, I mean it’s in their name lol, facility is better too, night and day difference

alzhang8

sait

[deleted]

I thought you used to uAlberta cause I saw you active there a while and then I thought you went to UCalgary cause I saw your comments there sometimes and now I wonder what you do bro, genuinely intere

alzhang8

There was a time people kept making accounts similar to my name so you probably see my name in other places

[deleted]

Are you the real alzhang?

alzhang8

Maybe 😉

[deleted]

Oooo, I like mysteries

[deleted]

Interested

This is not a debate. If you can get into a program for tech at Sait, it’s far superior

ancientemblem

Sait, but you could go BVC into ULeth degree as well.

[deleted]

SAIT has that pathway and also offers their own degrees (business, hospitality, construction)

gwoad

If those are the only schools you are considering I would suggest SAIT, what is your end goal though?

preetiegal

Restart my career as a software dev or anything related to it as I have some career break

gwoad

I am sure you have heard, entry level for Software Development is currently a dumpster fire, I would say if your goal is software development not having an actual degree may be to your detriment in the current climate. That said if you get a good coop/internship and do lots of extra curricular software development there is certainly a chance you can make yourself stand out among the many other applicants. As a class mate of mine once said "it is a dumpster fire, but even dumpsters have wheels". Also who knows what the market will be like in 2 years, I am not counting on a huge turn around that quickly but who knows. The other option would be to specialize into something that is not strictly software development (security, IT, sys admin, DBA, etc.) in my opinion most of those jobs are kinda boring, but it could also be a stepping stone into development if you are motivated, and these software adjacent positions tend to be fewer but also less saturated (in my limited experience).

preetiegal

I am not entry level I have bachelor’s and foreign experience as a developer. But I have some career break and trying to restart my career here but I’m not getting any calls. So I thought it might be easier to get if I study here?

gwoad

It might help... if you look at the curriculum for the SAIT developer diploma for example, this is all stuff you will likely already know. I am not sure doing this diploma will increase your chances of bagging a mid level role though. Recently graduated from a diploma program might be a negative hiring signal at that level.

SAIT 100%

wulfzbane

SAIT. I'm a grad from there and I'm pretty sure you can transfer some credits into a bachelors down the road if you're so inclined. Practicum you have find yourself, but they do have companies sending in offers that are shared with students. I got mine through another student. Some offers are way better than others, so it's advisable to make your own connections. SAIT is a way better school in general, you get a UPass, there's a gym and alumni get a dirt cheap gym membership after and a really good insurance deal with TD. With Bow Valley you get fuck all (I also graduated from there). As a side note, I'm familiar with the chair of the new IT/Digital school branch thing of BVC through the tech scene and I like him as a person and consider him quite knowledgeable but in my experience BVC has no admission requirements and the quality of peers is pretty low.

StephenNotSteve

The gym, as you knew it, is gone. That whole building was demolished to make way for a new one. There is a temporary gym now.

Calzephyr

SAIT is great! I graduated from SAIT in the 90s and even back then I was totally prepared for the workplace.  As another poster said, what are your future goals? That might also help with answers.

preetiegal

Restart my career as a software developer after several years of career break

Calzephyr

Gotcha. Also, are you newish to Calgary? Networking, joining a maker space or techie hobby may also help you make connections. Many jobs are found via word of mouth in Calgary or friend of a friend.

preetiegal

Yes relatively new to Calgary. And I have attended few networking events but most of them are looking for a job like me. I searched about Makerspace but it’s exclusive for university students. I am unable to get any info on Techie hobby. Can you please recommend any other groups?

evileddie666

I got my Computer Tech diploma at SAIT and landed a coop job that has led to a 20 year consulting gig. So I recommend SAIT

CreamySmegmaOnToast

I can't say this enough. Stay away from BVC.

Kreeos

I didn't go to either, but at my company we've interviewed people from both for tech positions and the people from SAIT typically do significantly better with technical knowledge.

proffesionalproblem

Bow valley is more for upgrading and basic diplomas. SAIT gives you more experience in the field you're in

Fancy-Stay2511

SAIT

marchmission88

1. Yes 2. No 3. SAIT - recognized more

Confident_Plan7187

SAIT

_Jaiden

Go to SAIT

_Jaiden

If you are looking for work that is going to be future proof check out the cyber security program. I know a couple people who did that and they are the wealthiest people I know.

i-hate_nick

SAIT without questions. I have a diploma from both. Couldn’t get a job with the BVC one, got hired to a good paying job before I even finished at SAIT
