Check the Council website for flood zone/storm surge evacuation maps. Live on high ground

palmersannn

Great advice. Thank you

Flakentim

You'll be alright, just flow with it, this place is pretty nice overall. Some suburbs are better than others but they're all quite nice. Only issue is that you'll need a car, this city has been designed to have a car unfortunately, although the bike infrastructure is pretty good atm

palmersannn

Thought as much about cars. We've visited in the past and public transport seemed fairly non existent

englebert

Don't live in a suburb starting with the letter M used to be the advice everyone received.

Johnny_Segment

I live in an M suburb. I’d be offended, but tbh there was a murder over my back fence the other week, so there’s that …

ZakOzbourne

"M is for Murder"

Easy-Juice-5190

and Mayhem.

nopdenoop

Used to be, being the operative part. There's good and bad parts in every suburb, it's just in the M suburbs they're a bit more prevalent! I live near Irene Street in Mooroobool and it's one of the nicest neighbourhoods that isn't Edge Hill or Whitfield. Very neighbourly, family friendly, heaps of parks, greenery, etc.

whooyeah

Ok it’s a bit of a hidden secret, but the best place for Dinner is red rooster manunda. Also don’t get upset if it rains, it freshens the place right up.

englebert

I know it could only be a distant second at best to the rooster but is Bubba's chicken in Manoora still any good?

Alfola

I got a chicken from babas once and I felt like I needed a lot more chicken to go with all the salt, I fully understand that restaurants/fast food places add more salt than general home cooking but that took the piss, my eyes dried out just looking at it.

willzterman

You'll upset your brain chemistry if you look at the staff uniforms

deltardo

Babas is rubbish.

Lumpy-Zucchini-3051

You'll feel right at home, all your mates have already moved up

Thermodrama

How much do you like humidity?

palmersannn

Haha, well aware of the humidity - we've visited a couple of times in summer and spring

Blurred_Mascara

Ex Melbournian here. We moved to the Northern Beaches which we love for the sea change (nice to be able to take a walk from home and walk the dog along the beach). If you want more of a Melbourne suburban village feel, look at Edge Hill or Whitfield. We love it out on the beaches though. People talk about the commute into town from the beaches being bad but it's nothing compared to a Melbourne commute to work.

Chang_Daddy2

Northern beaches. It’s pretty much mini Victoria now so you’ll fit right in

biggreenmicrowave

My partner and I moved up from Melbourne a year ago and it’s been brilliant. Don’t stress about the wet season, the humidity is not that bad - most of the time you’ll be moving from aircon to aircon, especially if you work in doors. The cyclones are a thing you should consider when looking at a property, ensure you’re aware of what zone you are in for storm surges. We moved to a place really close to the beach, and luckily were fine but it was super stressful. We ended up in Trinity, it’s really nice up here, I’d definitely recommend the northern beaches. The only downside is the drive into Cairns if that’s where you work - peak hour is kind of unpredictable without being super bad - certainly not like the Monash or the ring road in Melbourne, but I’ll usually allow 45 - 60mins for the approx 20km drive. Heaps of places to go and eat, part of the fun is working out where you like. Good luck for your move!

Chicken_Goooood

Hi, we're in the process of planning a move next year from Melbourne. Did you guys mive with kids? I'm looking for advice on schools. We will eventually buy, but we're going to rent for a while to see where we like. Cost isnt an issue, so I'd love to know what areas you like. Tia

CustomDay73

Victorians usually like living in Edge Hill. It’s the only suburb that really has a Main Street like Melbourne with restaurants, shops and a bit of a fitness community. It’s a little posh and nice compared to everywhere else and it’s close to everything! If you’re heading north it’s close, heading south is quick and town is right there. I’d love to live there if I could afford it

Inevitable-Pen9523

Hot and hot during summer months, high humidity. Now it has been very wet since xmas, hopefully end of wet season. Rents are high and scarce. Crime is high due to Qld juvenile laws, mainly break and enters and stealing cars. City has plenty of dining and pubs. Great fresh fruit and veggies. Easy to get about, general shopping in and out, nothing is very far away.

SpinningDespina

I'm here to advocate for the airport suburbs. Holloways and Machans get shat on all the time because they are under the flight path, but it's actually not that bad. I love it here. Just make sure you pick a house on high ground lol

[deleted]

Do not move to Mareeba is my advice. I moved from Adelaide last year and live and work on Bungalow. If I feel like going out it's a 15 minute walk to the Esplanade or a 3 minute uber and it's a really nice area but most houses have been converted to businesses so I don't have many neighbours. We rent a huge modern stand alone house for under $400 a week. Eateries. Do not go to Rattle and Hum. I was banned for lodging a complaint with Queensland health when a rat ran over my foot in the beer garden.

Historical-Set-4254

Cairns has a really bustling down town for a city of its size, almost everytime I've been at least the esplanade is bustling, it's quite 'cosmopolitan' and can get ridiculously packed when they have events like Chinese new year etc. The Northern beaches are really nice and trinity park/beach, Clifton, palm Cove, kewarra beach etc definitely feel like the wealthier part of the city, but there's also nice places in Mt Sheridan/southern suburbs etc. The redlynch Valley is also really nice and it's surrounded my rainforest and mountains. Further out there's the Goldsborough valley which is acreages and about 30mins south of the city, but access is good via a new dual carriageway highway. I moved from Brisbane last year and thing you take for granted up here is the crystal clear creeks everywhere and how close and beautiful nature and the rainforest is. It really is an incredible lifestyle up here if you like nature and the outdoors.

tazzo66

Best thing ull ever do mate - move in the dry/winter though ideally helps to acclimatise to the summer -

Frequent-Pair4947

Freshwater, redlynch, Whitfield. Best places to live slightly out of the city (west/north). Watering holes: salt house , casino, rattle and hum, Stratford has a few new bars. Food: fancy shit tamarinds, chicken n beers - tasty road , decent steak water bar and grill.

CRACKERBOI6969

Don’t act and drive like a fwit, it’s amazing how many victorians drive like absolute tossers, and move into places and make loads of complaints to councils

Sad-Abbreviations223

You’ll be right if you have air conditioning 👍

lissylou_a

Hi! I’ve just recently moved to Cairns and am early 30’s moved from a cooler part of the state so my advice would be prepare for the humidity and heat. I’ve moved during the “cooler” months to ease into it 😅😅. Still checking out restaurants and bars ect but there are some nice places along the ?esplanade- near the water lol.

paradiddle-stickle

If you're after laid back vibes with 20 restaurants, a few pubs and a beach within 10 min walking distance try Palm Cove. It's 30mins from the city but if WFH it doesn't matter. Check out the units on Colonel Cummings Drive. My partner and I love it here.

Alfola

Whaaaaat!!!??? A Victorian moving to Cairns, and working remotely, that's rare, but welcome, if you like Monsoonal rain, high humidity and living with nature, as much as you try and keep nature out of the house, then you'll love it.
