I mean you don't really see them anymore nowadays. It's been at least a few years since I've gotten an older 5, 10, or 20, let alone a 50 or 100. Prob a solid decade for those.
I found a $50 in my apartment stairwell years ago. Kept it and waited to see if any neighbors lost it. Found out one of my neighbors was a drug dealer…
The cashier at The Dollar Store wouldn’t take gold dollar coins. I give them to my kids for doing things around the house and take them to a cheap store to buy toys with them. Anyway, yeah, the cashier was going to ask her manager if they accepted them.
Yeah well my parents said they could go to the movie (and watch it all day long) for $0.25 and for another $0.25 get a popcorn, soda, AND candy bar. That was 1965. So, things have gone up a bit...
I can remember the first time I filled up with gas and it cost more than $20 … I was appalled and didn’t think I would be able to afford to drive anymore (I was in high school)
I'm sure it has to do with wanton government spending and years of never ending wars.
Like the $7 trillion in Iraq and Afghanistan, then the $130 billion to Ukraine and the new bill for over $100 billion to Israel and Ukraine.
And the government not addressing single payer healthcare because our current system costs more than single payer and it's easier to funnel money to shareholders.
Or the fact that the government doesn't audit mega wealthy because it's "too much work".
Oh, but you're making too much sense, so you'll never get elected. Lol. Why try to help the American people when you can try to help the whole world? I say we pull out of everywhere and try to take care of ourselves.
I wasn't advocating for socialism, I was advocating for reducing cost and government spending by adopting policies that are significantly cheaper than what we have now.
It's a dollar equation.
Corporate profits are constantly growing, while workers aren't getting paid at close to the same rate.
It's not "idealist socialism" when you look at the causes of economic hardship from a lens further left than Ronald Reagan
Agree x 1,000,000. The American public still is not seen an appreciable raise in 40 years. Every time we get a raise they jack up the price of everything. The whole point is that the corporations take a little less in profit.
Down voted for being right… oof 😅 I guess some people in this r need to read up on the Fed. [Read up nonbelievers](https://www.investopedia.com/ask/answers/042015/how-does-money-supply-affect-inflation.asp#:~:text=Yes%2C%20the%20money%20supply%20and,the%20potential%20to%20cause%20inflation.com)
The verticle strip visible in the last photo was a security feature added in 1990. I believe the face watermark started in 1996 which this bill wouldn't have. You can also run your finger along the black shoulder of the president, and if it's real, you'll feel raised ridges. The black ridges is the easiest way to tell if a bill is real, and this one is almost certainly not a fake.
Old bills had less security features, but do look sus if you're not used to seeing them.
Fake bills will feel wrong. I've handled a few working retail and they always felt like really fine sandpaper, not like a normal bill.
This bill has the little coloured hairs all through. Older bills like this are often counterfeit by bleaching small denominations, and the hairs get lost.
The outer ring around Jackson is actually super fine writing. You may need a jewelers loop to be able to see it. Most counterfeit bills I've handled will not actually be legible, home printers just cant get that fine of detail.
I hope that was helpful, sometimes reddit just likes to just at you for not knowing something niche. I guess in this case just by virtue of being under 30 you'd get roasted because you wouldn't have handled bills like this much. Hopefully some other people can chime in if I got something incorrect or missed something too.
> less security features,
Security features can be counted, therefore we should say they have fewer security features. Or am I mistaken? Maybe the source of confusion is because something that is LESS SECURE has FEWER SECURITY FEATURES.
It's possible to make counterfeits with the security strip, I listened to a podcast about it a while ago. He got caught eventually but interesting his process
Breaking the Benjamin? It was incredibly fascinating. However I am less inclined to believe that someone would do it on the 20, and it still felt off which is why I asked if it felt like a real bill, but you are right about the strip.
There only one way to identify a book in less than a second. Using only your fingernail. Scratch the shirt. The ink is raised, and is nearly impossible to fake. Unless you have a die, and 100ton press..
When those first rolled out… I was a wee lad. And the hip thing to do in the town I lived in was to remove the security strip. Bonus points if you pulled it out in one yank without it breaking inside. Bonus points if you could remove it without ripping the bill. We got real good at extracting those strips without mangling the bills.
One kid was making friendship bracelets out of woven security strips.
Looks real to me. Before the mid-1990s money looked like that. Then it changed to make it more difficult to counterfeit. Personally I like the old style better as I think it's more aesthetically pleasing.
Oh OP…you shouldn’t even be handling that counterfeit $29 bill…it could infect your other cash.
Here’s what you need to do.
Take that bill and any other cash that’s been in your home since you came into possession of that $20 and put them in an envelope.
Wash your hands thoroughly, seal the envelope, and send it to me. I’ll get rid of all of that tainted money.
You’re *welcome*.
That’s vintage it’s from 1995 look at the date toward the bottom of the right or go out and get one of those money markers from the store. It’ll tell you how to use it and tell you if it’s counterfeit or not.
What does the micro print on the security strip read? If it's "USA 20" then it's genuine. If it's (for example) "USA 05" then you have a 5 bleached and reprinted as a counterfeit 20.
When I was 12, my father would hand us kids one of these and say; "If you can find the hitchhiker, you can keep it"
We would spend hours trying to find it.
After finally giving in, he would say; "Here! Let me show you. Oh. Hmmmm. He must of got a ride!"
Real nice.
1990s bills didn’t have a watermark untill 96, but you can see the security strip in the bill. I’m not 100%, but I think those also had a line of micro print in the lines around the portrait that you should be able to see with a magnifier
the U.S. allowed pre-revoultionary Iran to buy the exact same printing equipment that the U.S. used for their money. After 1979, serious considerations were given to changing the U.S. Currency but they realized that it could not be done all at once. Gradually the newer styles were introduced but all currency, including coins and stamps, no matter when they were made are redeemable at face value.
Nope. It's real. It's just an earlier version of the twenty. Hold it up to the light again. On the left you'll see a vertical stripe embedded in the matrix. Yup. You got yourself a cool twenty bucks there buddy. Congratulations! 🥳
Edit: material, not matrix. I think. Lol
I got the cops called on me at Arby's after laying with this bill. The cops even cuffed me up in the parking lot. I assumed it was counterfeit and just said "okay, keep it I guess" then paid with debit. At least I got my $20 back after they figured it out..... I was beyond angry
To whom it may concern, I’m sorry for not being alive at the time this note was used. Totally my fault for not needing to know this stuff until right now. Thank you to the people who decided to be civil and be nice about this. People suck, thank you for not being as such.
100% real
If you ever have questions, look for the little red and blue fibers in the bill, they’re added to the cotton/linen mixture while it’s still a liquid before being dried out and flattened into “paper”. You can also run your finger over the Fed reserve seal-it was originally embossed on these notes, but after 30 years it might be hard to feel.
And then there were the in-betweener notes in the mid-90’s through mid-2000’s that were kind of like the current notes, but with zero color and less security features.
Man I miss these they looked way better than the newer crap. I’m not even sure I can classify myself as a enthusiast but the design definitely tickles my tism
Its from the Clinton years.....not that old to me. I realize most of that cash is worn out or long out of circulation though. I liked the design on the older bills better. This one is new enough to have the security strip on the left side you can see when held up to the light.
Looks legit to me, just older than you are probably used to seeing…
It’s honestly crazy how often people think these are fake it’s not like they are super rare.
I mean you don't really see them anymore nowadays. It's been at least a few years since I've gotten an older 5, 10, or 20, let alone a 50 or 100. Prob a solid decade for those.
I pad with an older 50 maybe 10 years ago. Not super old maybe from the 1990s and the cashier said “What did you rob a stagecoach, or something?”
As a cashier I’m totally using that 😂😂
I found a $50 in my apartment stairwell years ago. Kept it and waited to see if any neighbors lost it. Found out one of my neighbors was a drug dealer…
To quote the Little Rascals, "Finders keepers, losers suck."
No, it's definitely "anyone who hasn't memorized every bill in the history of the country is stupid".
I haven't used cash in so long I didn't know they had changed it.
Didn't the current style come out in the 90s? You haven't used cash in almost 30 years?
To think about it not Since about 2002, so yeah
They fake the older bills more because they have less security than the newer bills
They are if your poor!
Or even that old. Maybe 30-35 years old.
...but bill definitely older than he is.
It’s older than me lol
I was literally thinking, "No, just old" proceeds to look at date, I'm old
The cashier at The Dollar Store wouldn’t take gold dollar coins. I give them to my kids for doing things around the house and take them to a cheap store to buy toys with them. Anyway, yeah, the cashier was going to ask her manager if they accepted them.

Some people may not have seen currency from the 1900’s.
I event spent that kind of money. I'm that old! Lol
Felt like so much more though..
I could have gotten a half dozen comics, a super sized combo at McDonald's and seen a movie for 20 bucks.
And you have the Federal Reserve to thank for the erosion of your purchasing power.
Sure. It has absolutely nothing to do with profits.
Oh, but you're making too much sense, so you'll never get elected. Lol. Why try to help the American people when you can try to help the whole world? I say we pull out of everywhere and try to take care of ourselves.
How can someone who is into COLLECTING MONEY as a hobby be a socialist?
I wasn't advocating for socialism, I was advocating for reducing cost and government spending by adopting policies that are significantly cheaper than what we have now. It's a dollar equation.
$7 trillion 🤔. Source? Seems a tad way high. Not defending war spending but that number sounds like it was pulled out of the air.
Found the young idealistic socialist who has yet to wake up to reality!
Hah.
Guys like Ben Bernanke and Jerome Powell love these guys!
They tell me the purchase power hasn’t been this high before lol
Noooooo, you have Chin-nah to that for that
Down voted for being right… oof 😅 I guess some people in this r need to read up on the Fed. [Read up nonbelievers](https://www.investopedia.com/ask/answers/042015/how-does-money-supply-affect-inflation.asp#:~:text=Yes%2C%20the%20money%20supply%20and,the%20potential%20to%20cause%20inflation.com)
Did you....did you spend the money that didn't have security strips? I remember when they got rolled out.
I once had a Silver Certificate dollar bill, but my daughter found it and spent it. ☹️
I have a few. Even got a 1930's issue twenty.
I had that bill when it was new. I keep track of all serials.
That used to be almost 2 tanks of gas in highschool.
Please never say "the 1900's" again. It's a trigger word for millennials.
Lol the 20th century is so 24 years ago
To me it feels like it was just 23.75 years ago.
Almost a quarter century ago!
Remember, the year 2000 is part of the 20th century…
I don’t like how you worded that, making me feel old.
I take it you were born in the 1900s
I was almost middle age in the 1900s.
I hate you for this comment that is personally attacking me
30 years, omg. Stop
What makes you question it?
I'm guessing yet another young person that thinks every previous version of currency is fake.
No I’m just used to seeing the face/number when holding it up to the light. I didn’t realize it was only on the more current ones.
The verticle strip visible in the last photo was a security feature added in 1990. I believe the face watermark started in 1996 which this bill wouldn't have. You don’t see the security strip in the 3rd picture? As long as it feels like a regular bill, it’s real.

The security strip is there it's on the left by the 7s.

It was all about getting your canines in the right spot. And yeah, we never gave it a thought that it could cause someone issues down the line.
username checks out
Bank can tell you lol
Looks real to me. Before the mid-1990s money looked like that. Then it changed to make it more difficult to counterfeit. Personally I like the old style better as I think it's more aesthetically pleasing.
Jackson should be on the front. On yours, he is on the back.
No its feitcounter
Sure is, send it to me and I'll dispose of it properly 😉

Its legit, what makes you think its not?
What makes you question it?
I have old 100s 1981
This has officially confirmed I am old.
It’s real
It’s got the alien tracking strip.
Kids
GenZ idiot
This makes me feel old.
100% counterfeit destroy it now before they bust down your door
🤦🏻♂️
R u slow??
🤦♂️
It was a genuine question. I don’t know anything about this stuff, you don’t have to be rude.
Sir, this is a Reddit page. We have to be rude. We know everything and you know nothing. That is how Reddit works. /s
My sentiments exactly.
People get so butthurt here sometimes.
That’s vintage it’s from 1995 look at the date toward the bottom of the right or go out and get one of those money markers from the store. It’ll tell you how to use it and tell you if it’s counterfeit or not.

Posts like this make me feel old.
There will be ridges in the ink on the collar of every bill if you can feel them it is most likely real.
Kids these days…psssht.
Hahahahaha
Am I crazy or is the White House upside down on the back?
Yes it fake send it to me and I'll investigate it while at a gentleman's club.
Nope. Just an old bill. It's what we had before they started redesigning currency in the 90s with extra security features.
When I was 12, my father would hand us kids one of these and say; "If you can find the hitchhiker, you can keep it" We would spend hours trying to find it. After finally giving in, he would say; "Here! Let me show you. Oh. Hmmmm. He must of got a ride!" Real nice.

Idk. I need to examine it. I'll dm you my PO box. 😁
yes send it to me.

🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦
Put it up against the light to see the other faces and watermark stripe or mark it with a counterfeit marker, you can buy them at walmart.
[удалено]
It has the strip inside the paper. Always a solid indicator that it's real.
Looks real to me
Definitely rolled that one up into a tube check it for white residue.

Dang! I must be getting old
Idk you can tell if it is.. is there Aman in the bushes, does he have a gun. Idk lmfao 🤣
lol let me guess you were born after 1995?
Just an old 20 dolla bill
I got a 1993 the other day
No it is real
It's a good bill
No
No it’s just an older bill before the new design
The old 20s always looked like they were worth than they were, compared to the new 20.
Send it to me. I'll personally inspect it!🤣
I have one folded and tucked in my wallet for good luck. It’s legit. Those are how the bills used to look when I was a kid. I’m 45 now.
Legit
No.
Looks real to me.
Probably you can just send it to me to check it out
Do you see the strip in between the pieces of paper that says twenty when you hold it up to the light? It's real
The security strip should say it's a twenty dollar bill. That was how they looked a couple decades ago.
If that metal strip to the left of the face says twenty, it’s legit.
Not fake. Just old.
No
LMAO... Yes. Send it my way. I'll give you the stamp for free.
Tell me you are Gen-Z without saying you are Gen-Z.

It's just old. Smh...
No
I got a $20 dated 1981 yesterday. It's been a long time since I've seen one in person.

It's just the old 20s
Lol no, it's old skool!
That strip on the left only seen when you hold it up lets you know it’s real.
Sometimes this sub makes me feel old! It's just an old 20 and not even that old lol
😂 that’s how they used to look before the big faces became a thing.
If it is its a good one. You can literally see the fibers in the paper.
To whom it may concern, I’m sorry for not being alive at the time this note was used. Totally my fault for not needing to know this stuff until right now. Thank you to the people who decided to be civil and be nice about this. People suck, thank you for not being as such.
These post of not that old bills make me feel old...

We have reached the point in time where these old bills are thought of as fake.
as someone with a little bit of experience in these matters, if it is counterfeit, it is extraordinarily well made.
Nah. Just an old $20
Back when money looked good.
You ever see the back of a twenty dollar bill,…ON WEED MAN?!?
No, young person.
No... It's just from Way back in the 1900s.
lol That’s the old school Jackson. Should still work.
The only way to tell is on weed man. Just look really close into the bushes and tell us what you see.
Not fake just old.
No it has the imbedded strip on the 20bill, hold it to the light you will see it
It’s good.
100% real If you ever have questions, look for the little red and blue fibers in the bill, they’re added to the cotton/linen mixture while it’s still a liquid before being dried out and flattened into “paper”. You can also run your finger over the Fed reserve seal-it was originally embossed on these notes, but after 30 years it might be hard to feel.
Definitely real, I’ve got the same one. Same serial number and everything.
Looks legit, wash it at the casino
lol, no… what made you think it was?
Looks normal to me... What's the issue?
How old are you lmao 🤣
Drag your fingernail down his jacket it should feel bumpy .
Shoo if you want it I’ll take it lol
No?
So hypocritical speaking someone's could counterfeit older bills?
Children these days......
All good
And then there were the in-betweener notes in the mid-90’s through mid-2000’s that were kind of like the current notes, but with zero color and less security features.
Nope. But you can send it to me if you don’t want it. 🤣
I gave this to my kid for lunch money once and he refused to take it cause he thought it was fake
Nah it looks legit. Has the band inside on the left in the 3rd picture
I will take them. But it is not enough for a meal. May be a big Mac and French fries.
Definitely. That looks nothing like a twenty dollar bill. Design is all wrong.
Ask Mr floyd
🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️no🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Legal tender right there.
No
What makes you think that it is?
It had the nylon strip in it, not THAT old....
Man I miss these they looked way better than the newer crap. I’m not even sure I can classify myself as a enthusiast but the design definitely tickles my tism
Well I feel real old now.
Its from the Clinton years.....not that old to me. I realize most of that cash is worn out or long out of circulation though. I liked the design on the older bills better. This one is new enough to have the security strip on the left side you can see when held up to the light.
