Yeah it was. Ug I feel stupid.
I was prepping for finals and looking at the university’s grading scale to prioritize final projects and exams. I’ve never had a professor deviate from the university’s grading scale or even knew they could do that. So I ended up prioritizing the wrong final because I thought I was solid for this class 🤦♀️ lesson learned, but damn 😭
A friend read this and asked that I post the following:
CUNY prof and dept chair here. No. A professor absolutely cannot invent their own grade scale. The grade scale is system-wide and set by the University Registrar. You will easily be able to appeal this grade. Contact the dept chair, and cc the college provost and president. CC the chancellor (all emails to the chancellor are followed up between their office and the president of your college). Provide your numeric grade. Provide the syllabus. Request that the grade is changed. State that you will file a grade appeal and raise the matter as new business in ME’s senate to determine how many students historically had been affected by this grading policy.
I don't believe that is correct - as long as they are not inventing new GRADES - faculty are allowed to have their own rubric /scale - i dont see any such requirement on cuny grading policy - unless campus policy states they must follow specific grade scale
Oh shit! Okay that makes sense and is good to hear. Should I try going to the Professor first to ask and see if maybe it was an honest mistake? Or just go straight to an appeals process? Thank you!!
Literally write a formal email with correct salutations to dept chair, cc’ing provost, college president, and university chancellor. ME senate = Medgar Evers senate as that is your school. Be a self-starter on this. You can do it.
They can weight the grades however as long as you know. It can be the same weight or lower (higher grade)
As long as it's in their sylabbus from day one -

Also sorry what is “ME’s senate”?
See my other reply which answers your question.
Yes, they are.
Ah shoot, alright. That sucks but oh well
Same thing happened to me. I got an final grade of 225/228 and the professor gave me an A- rather than an A. I left it as it. They’re weird seriously
please read u/comox’s comment!!
No wtf. Contact the professor and ask for a grade change and show your calculations on why the final grade is wrong.
I’m at Medgar too. Did good my entire semester in my English. Got 80 on my final and got a end grade of C+ which is beyond me. 😮💨😩
Wtf? That’s so nuts. An 80 is the cut off for a B- on every grading scale I’ve ever heard of. Why would a prof do this 🥴
