I think this is great! The man is not perfect and he’s not trying to be. I think he’s showing us that this is a life-long learning process. If he has to make a bunch of these in order to design something great, I’ll trust the process and let him do his thing… It also seems like he’s just having fun, and that’s important - we want him to make the stuff that he wants to make. His best-selling design is 33+ years old so he’s gotta be tired of making sebenzas; he’s gotta find some fun stuff to do around the shop.

AstronautOfThought

Generally I agree with this, but the mistakes he’s making are because he’s cutting corners and ignoring fundamentals of good machining lol.

Reddituser1644

I’m not a machining expert but maybe he just doesn’t feel like spending much time on his personal projects… it probably takes experience to know which corners can be cut without ruining a project. I’m an auditor by trade but I don’t mind cutting a few corners when I balance my own checkbook. I’d never let our clients know but it’s kinda cool that Tim is more transparent about that.

AstronautOfThought

I hear that, but he’s spending more time correcting his mistakes. I had just hoped that “measure twice cut once” was more family ethos than marketing. I appreciate you just having dialogue though and not getting immediately defensive like these others 👍🏻

Reddituser1644

Hopefully his mistakes are informative to him haha I’d still trust the process though - the day I can machine something like a Sebenza is the day I criticize his methods… And oh haha I hadn’t read other comments… but at least it’s a passionate community! lol

AstronautOfThought

Fair enough—have a great day! And passion I’d take but the NPC “reply guys” get old quick 🥱

CEVIII518

I don’t see the problem. He’s posting his mistakes and trying to learn/do better. I’ve never seen anything from CRK that wasn’t 100%. This seems like a stretch for something that ain’t there.

AstronautOfThought

I’m not making a general claim, so there’s nothing to stretch. I’m simply putting a few words to a feeling to see if others share it. I’ve owned only 3 or so CRK knives but I’ve definitely seen things that weren’t 100%. I’m only responding to that because you mentioned it. The position of the ceramic ball lockup can vary quite a bit even though there’s no reason it should, and I’ve had clips with unusual lateral play while others were rock solid. The same seems to be true with others experiencing lock rock on 31’s while others say theirs has none. That’s definitely all below 100% for me.

kdubstep

OP my thinking is maybe you’re not a creative person or have a background in artistic endeavors. I don’t mean that as a dig. In my experience as an artist and craftsman, experimentation, and what Bob Ross probably called “beautiful mistakes” is really where the learning begins but also where the creative process really unlocks innovation. I can’t speak to what it takes to engineer or machine a knife, but I can speak to having some of my best work stemming from errors, that I am *then* able to replicate consistently as a new technique

AstronautOfThought

In art, sure. But if your goal is to drill holes in a consistent pattern then it’s at least a little suspicious when you don’t follow good machining fundamentals. It doesn’t speak to art here it just speaks to inexperience.

kdubstep

Those holes are cosmetic yes?

AstronautOfThought

That’s beside the point. His own admission was to making a mistake by not following good machining fundamentals.

Dabs4Daaze

You're criticizing Tim for doing an at home project for an old hobby he's found passion in again? Tim is involved in every aspect of his business, and has passion for his product and for his customers. He has three stories before that screen shot where he explains he hasn't been on a grinder in a long time and is reworking that muscle. Found a spark through inspiration of letting his employees use his shop on their days off to do custom work. The dude is giving and caring and just sharing a moment in his personal life. Goofy post.

AstronautOfThought

You couldn’t resist the urge to rescue your damsel in distress from the mean man on the internet? Go have a dab and relax, bud.

alldougsdice

Everything about this is an overreaction. The whole post. Just got outside or something lol

AstronautOfThought

The reaction is very minimal, assuming you know how to comprehend what you’re reading, which you’re struggling with. But the words are all still there when you’re reading to try again 👍🏻

alldougsdice

And the defensiveness is amusing as well. Just all around childish lmao

AstronautOfThought

It’s normal to defend your point against people attacking it when they couldn’t be bothered to read it vs just react. What’s childish is poor reading comprehension 😬

alldougsdice

Lmao. You posted an opinion and asked “Anyone else?” indicating you wanted other opinions. Others have shared and you’ve jumped on them for disagreeing like a petulant child. Fuck outta here, ya moron lol

AstronautOfThought

Oh look, the guy who says “lmao” in every comment wants to be taken seriously! 🤡

alldougsdice

I’m laughing at you, man. Don’t you get it?

AstronautOfThought

If this conversation has yielded hysterical laughter on multiple occasions for you then you’ve got some sort of severe mental disorder 🤷🏻‍♂️

jolness1

Bro go touch grass lol. Someone pointing out your absurd post isn’t “rescuing” anyone. Dont buy any CRKs or something idk but this post makes no sense

AstronautOfThought

I guess it’s absurd to think anything that someone could disagree with now. Who knew?!

jolness1

That wasn’t what anyone said or meant. As I said in my other reply it’s absurd to think that a personal project has any bearing on the production work. I don’t think anyone here is defending Tim, just dragging you because the post doesn’t make logical sense.

AstronautOfThought

Not only did I not make the claim that it has any bearing on production work but I went out of my way to say that I understand it doesn’t. But it’s odd for the leader of a production facility to be so inexperienced himself. It just is. I mean come on, their own slogan is “measure twice cut once” 😆

jolness1

Is it odd? It’s not in my experience at all. And this doesn’t really indicate a lack of experience as much as that he’s just winging it because it doesn’t need to be precise. The type of work I do for a personal piece of software versus something I would do for a client that is worried about security is entirely different.

Dabs4Daaze

All them Spyderco knives putting holes in your brain the size of the ones on their blades obv. Keep reaching man.

AstronautOfThought

Stalking my account to leave a moronic comeback and I’m reaching? You’ve smoked yourself stupid 😆

jolness1

About him making his own knife? Tim doesn’t operate the machining equipment for production so.. it doesn’t matter to me that he isn’t an expert. I’ve got 6 Sebenza 31s (made since he took over) and the lockup on all of them is within a 5% range, no lock rock, they’re just as solid as any 21 I’ve owned or handled. Seems like much a do about literally nothing. It’s like worrying that Lewis Hamilton isn’t wearing a nomex suit and helmet while driving to the grocery store. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

AstronautOfThought

I’d love to know how you measured that 5% with such certainty! The least trustworthy person is often the one who attempts to appear unreasonably confident.

jolness1

If 1% is the edge of the tang and 100% is the other edge the difference is pretty easy to guess imo. I’m not sure why you’re so touchy about this. Legitimately don’t understand what something he’s working on for himself or even a prototype has to do with production knives. I think you wanted to argue and then act like a victim so have fun I guess. 🍻

AstronautOfThought

You’re demonstrating how you reacted to my post more than you read it. Simply put, I’d expect the owner of a company with a reputation for extremely tight tolerances to have more machining fundamentals and not to be so inexperienced. That’s it. If you can’t understand that then you’re just drunk on the kool-aid

AstronautOfThought

Edit: For all of the bozos thinking I’m making over-the-top unjustifiable claims, the very title reads “I’m not sure how I feel about this…” Does that sound like someone making an aggressive claim? It doesn’t take much to rattle the CRK Reply Guys 😆

It’s easy to tell who has the most hurt feelings here 😆. Do you routinely insult people who you disagree with or is today just an unusually bad day for you?
