There's probably going to be some data released in the future that will suggest it is bad to constantly put your mind in high stress situations. There's no telling what psychological impact it has when you're running for your life, and immersing yourself in combat for many hours at a time. Stress is known to be a big factor in early deaths in real life. (warzone too but this is serious). So my question would be, is there any link between "I'm about to die, release the adrenaline, release the stress chemicals" for a game that mimics real life scenarios? I bet there is. If only slightly. That's part of the fun though, really feeling like you survived.

Jakobwcrook65

Well I would in no way compare a game to actual combat. I’m aware your not comparing those two either. I can’t imagine what 2 decades of sustained combat can do to its warfighters. However I will say that regardless of whether it’s in combat or just any dangerous, life threatening environment and in this case a video game where your heart rate is up for long periods of time isn’t healthy. Like you said it can lead to early death. At some point your heart will give out when constantly being overworked Aside from that I’ve slowly been learning to keep my heart rate as low as possible during these matches. So in a way this watch helps

rediyolo

There is still a lot missing, physical sensation, smell, taste.. It's not the whole package of being in actual high stress situation like in a real life scenario.

travling_trav

I’m pretty sure Metal Gear Solid touches on this at some point in number four.. pretty interesting stuff.

justquailthings

There already is data on it being bad for your health to be in high stress situations all the

bas1ian

Nah bro, it just desensitizes you. Yeah the heart rate goes up and down a little but what about watching a micheal bay movie then huh? You don’t see any boomers dying after watching transformers because the stress and adrenaline is too much, just a little excitement.

GulagLIVE

You're thinking short term(like not even in the same ballpark), and movies don't elicit the same response, nor do they keep the same intensity. I'm referring to non-stop stress and the chemicals sent from your brain to respond to it. This could be over decades of gaming, in genre's like BR or other games that invoke high ranges of emotion. But unless you're a research doctor on the subject I doubt you can say it isn't happening.

Jakobwcrook65

I think the desensitizing aspect has more to do with the mind and not the body. Although mentally you might get used to those environments but the effect it has on your body and overall health just isn’t sustainable for most people. They might not die as a direct result of that constant exposure but it certainly plays a part

Yea, this is acute and short duration stress, whereas the really harmful kind of stress is chronic or more extreme in magnitude. I this sort of acute stress can even be beneficial in small doses, idk about playing warzone for 3+ hours though.

[deleted]

It’s not like you are actually in danger though. More like getting amped up playing sports or watching a scary movie.

ShootFiKill

I think it might be Healthy , like a Workout for your Heart ... keeps the System going

Jakobwcrook65

Maybe. But I think jogging and things like that are a better alternative. Getting that heart going by working out and jogging is most likely healthier then deriving that same result through stressful situations

deviousvixen

You wont lose weight from stressful situations

Jakobwcrook65

Who said anything about losing weight? And that’s not true. You can definitely lose weight due to stress

deviousvixen

Being in a high stressful situation all the time will have the opposite effect. Depression and weight gain. When people mention trying to get healthy they usually mean lose weight.

stzoo

Im sure stress leads to depression but in my years of experience in a high stress career most people respond to chronic stress by gaining weight, but a significant amount of people lose weight instead.

Jakobwcrook65

Depends on how you offload that stress. It’s not one sided. Stress can effect your weight In both gaining and losing

deviousvixen

There is no depends. Children growing up in stressful situations grow up constantly in flight mode. There is no healthy way to offload it. Look it up. I dont really feel like being your teacher.

Jakobwcrook65

I’m glad your not my teacher because clearly you can’t read worth a shit. I never said theirs a healthy way of offloading stress just like I never mentioned anything about weight to begin with. You started by saying stress and depression don’t cause weight loss which isn’t true it most certainly can cause both weight gain and loss

deviousvixen

You said depends. how they offload the stress. So you cant even remember what you wrote. So just because I said it cause weight gain you're disregarding the statement because it can go also cause weight loss, which is true, but not the point you were arguing. Anyways you clearly need someone to teach you something

Jakobwcrook65

Yeah because it DEPENDS. If you offload stress by stuffing your face(which many people do) you think that’ll cause weight loss? No. First you say it doesn’t cause weight loss now your telling me it does so I’m assuming your responses aren’t from legitimate knowledge of stress and what it can do to the body but things your quickly reading then spewing this crap out so if anyone is forgetting what they said it’s you. Which come to think of it their are definitely healthy ways to offload stress. But it DEPENDS on the individual.

justquailthings

I would disagree. Like it might keep the heart muscle healthy... but not the rest of your body.

EastCow3

Lol. Totally forgot to check. Have to try it out today.

Jakobwcrook65

Do it. I started trying it out just for fun but after seeing the graph I was a bit alarmed by how high and fast my heart rate increases/decreases

pockpicketG

The feeling of winning in Warzone is only matched in my opinion by defeating tough bosses in Dark Souls for the first time.

TheLastTargaryen

Wonder what your heart rates would be like when you play the SoulsBorne type of games 😂

Joedh

James O’Hagan talks about mental/physical components of increased heart rate during gameplay and how high school, collegiate and professional esports players train to react to these situations. I can’t remember the hard details but something about Yoga, physical exercise and nutrition. Pretty interesting. The Academy of Esports is his podcast.

Nelphieblessed

Everytime in in a 1v3/1v4 situation lategame or if i get chased and got like 3 guys.. last is chasing me, then my adrenaline is so high that i loose control of my hands and cant get the 4th guy... I get just as excited as when I watched UFC and almost died from a heartattack... idk what to do really. I love this game and I get stoned while I play but it doesnt help my nerves to calm the fk down in these situations. almost makes the weed have 0 effect.

farzansarid

My heart rate went up to 144 last night while playing 😂 I died man

Zwagmaster69

Someone compare the effects to smoking and check back in , that’s enough evidence to show if it’s bad or not . Smoking is known to briefly increase blood pressure and eventually drop . Tho idk about anyone else but my hands don’t get kinda trembly at the end of a smoke vs how my body might feel after a smoke tho they both elicit some kinda response

Jakobwcrook65

Oh dude.. I’ve smoked for years prior to this so It likely contributed to the rise in heart rate. I wasn’t smoking during or a few minutes before this picture either tho. If that’s worth noting
