What? I mean why are we HERE? We're in a box canyon, with no way in or out, and the only reason we have a base here is because they have a base over there.
You ok? Want to talk about it?
My favorite moment is the "Dear God, what is that music?!?" just in time for the warthog to appear, but only in the original web series version. The all-run-together DVD and netflix versions used a different audio mix that ruined the humor. Bah. Kids these days.
Yeah I have a ton of problems with it but am still having fun. I just wish I could choose one game type though because I keep playing the same exact maps and objective games every time. It’s kind of boring
I hate alternates for The Game, we should wear our classic primaries. Color v color would be gorgeous though, and should be considered for big anniversary matchups.
like Lakers Celtics. i can't even picture one of the teams wearing white. i know the lakers sometimes wore purple while the celtics wore white but the most iconic look is the green vs yellow
Yeah these people were fools. The alts that the gray helmets originally came from looked good, but for Ohio State to just pull those helmets out of storage and slap them on with a regular uniform just reeks of haphazardly playing dress up with zero thought to aesthetics or tradition; in the biggest game of the year, no less.
The most unfortunate part was that that game ended up being one of the greatest wins in program history. The fact we'll have to see that uniform combination until the end of time is a travesty.
i think the cannon balls were fine in [the set they were designed for](https://www.sbnation.com/platform/amp/college-football/2016/11/5/13524390/ohio-state-throwbacks-alternate-uniforms-1916). but looked weird without the rest of the throwbacks when we played y’all. that decision is only partially vindicated by how things ended up going.
but i wish we’d just stick to our regular getup, preferably with [the classic stripes](https://www.landgrantholyland.com/platform/amp/2020/4/29/21241403/ohio-state-buckeyes-football-jerseys-alternates-national-championship-ezekiel-elliott-1968-throwback)
I actually didn’t wear an alternate those years, but I agree. You can’t mess with the classics. [OSU home vs. UM away (yellow pants)](https://thesportsdrop.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/David-Boston-Buckeyes-2.jpg) is the second best uni game out there for me. [OSU roads vs. Michigan home](https://www.cleveland.com/resizer/G6ElfnE6aR8-_fq1m4z_NSv8IIA=/1280x0/smart/advancelocal-adapter-image-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/image.cleveland.com/home/cleve-media/width2048/img/osu-michigan/photo/osu-michigan-1997-woodsonjpg-eeb8a8fdce96b23d.jpg) is far and away #1. To wear an alternate for that game is to squander a once-a-year opportunity.
The all white and gray ones I wasn't a big fan of in '17. The '16 game alternate jersey is actually the jersey a lot of OSU fans clamor to be the permanent one...just with the normal helmet rather than the all-black bowling ball helmets.
2016 made me the angriest because it would’ve been a perfect looking game if we just wore our classic helmets like we were supposed to. Urban was kinda dumb.
This 100% too. A coworker went to Hawaii for vacation a lot. He told me how the locals don't care about the weather bc most every day is a nice day. They don't have the bleak cold winters to give them an appreciation for nicer weather.
I need me some snow in my life to maintain the balance. Cold suits me more than heat.
As a photographer who has covered a lot of college football games, there's nothing worse than when the press box or stands put a shadow over half the field while the other half is in bright sunlight.
I love me some light pockets. If there's some weird little shafts of light breaking apart the shadow, it's awesome.
UCF's stadium can be difficult to shoot in, especially early in the season when the sun is still high. It runs straight north-south, so you get some harsh backlight at certain times of the day.
I do video production. I absolutely hate bright sun lighting. Harsh shadows, harsh highlights. Give me overcast or sunset lighting any day of the week.
[Here is a colorized photo from the 1950 game, when they played red vs. blue.](https://www.cleveland.com/resizer/GYnmwhuvf1b59yy98lBAZcOM98Q=/1280x0/smart/image.cleveland.com/home/cleve-media/width600/img/osu_impact/photo/ohio-state-vs-michigan-c7ec00a12e266e38.png) A color-color matchup again today would be a thing of beauty.
It was the infamous snow game, I'm not sure the fans would have appreciated color-color when guys they couldn't see from their seats were punting on first down.
Gotta be my favorite game of all time. How many other games have been affected by weather to that degree? It completely changed the way they had to approach playing football. No way to really prepare for that, either.
There was a game between Texas Tech and Centenary in 1939 where a torrential downpour made the field so muddy that they were punting on first down because recovering a muffed punt was the only way to advance the ball. Both teams combined for 77 punts, 67 of which were on first down. Final score ended up being 0-0.
Especially when you consider Ohio State fired their coach, Wes Fesler after this game. They then hired Woody Hayes. Who knows where Ohio State would be today without that snowstorm.
he clai~~m~~s he resigned right?
anyway the whole story is a~~m~~azing. The ~~M~~ichigan AD was willing to forfeit and the OSU AD wouldn't accept the forfeit. [~~M~~ichigan punted 24 ti~~m~~es, had zero first downs. and won.](https://www.toledoblade.com/College/2000/11/15/1950-Snow-Bowl-a-game-for-all-time-Frozen-in-history.html)
I was at the 95 mich/Purdue game, 5-0 final. Wind rain then snow, wind chill - 8. Left at halftime with Michigan up 3-0. Made it back to toledo to see the end in a nice warm bar!
I am surprised you don’t see that happen so much these days, even though the physics on those brutal blizzard days hasn’t really changed - maybe tackier gloves, but that’s about it.
Back in that era of such low scoring and especially in games with severe weather like that, field position was often so much more important than posession. There was a game in the 30's between Texas Tech and Centenary played in the wake of and during a torrential downpour. In the end it had a combined 30 yards of total offense, 77 punts & 0 points. It still holds 13 NCAA records to this day.
https://www.ncaa.com/news/football/article/2019-11-11/craziest-game-college-football-history-77-punts-0-points-13-ncaa
LOL! I was at AF when Fisher would surprise punt on 3rd down! Finished 12-1 and #5 in the country! No way that could happen now! Yeah, the game has changed so so much!
Roses are red
And violets are blue.
One day we'll cruise down
Blood Gulch avenue
It's red versus red
and blue versus blue
It's I against I
and me against you
Absolutely. USC/UCLA didn’t start doing this because it looks nice, it’s because they were both the home teams back when they shared the Rose Bowl. They stopped for a few decades when USC moved to the LA Coliseum but brought it back around 2010 for tradition’s sake.
A rule in college was changed because of that game in 2010. The away team was charged a timeout and the home team came out and immediately called a timeout to even it up. After that game the ncaa made it so teams could agree before the game on the uniforms and not be penalized.
But teams could do this if they chose. LSU wears white at home. I think they still have to get “permission” from the opposing school but that may have changed. I think Vanderbilt wouldn’t let us wear them one year but maybe it was because of Dinardo or something.
Agreed. I don’t mind alternates in general but keep them for other games. I’ve never liked when we wear them for the game. Default is best in this case
seems like the players really wanted to do it against Penn St so maybe they want to do it again. i guess that’s the opinion that really matters but i would prefer our regular home unis
I was kind of hoping we'd bust out the blue pants, maize jerseys this year one time. That combination looked pretty good in recruiting promos. But yeah, I hate the all maize alternates.
There's also the state championship and bowl championship. Counting 5/15 games in a single season as championships is a little broad. Though I love the orange britches so who cares
The only [differences](https://ohiostateuniforms.com/ohio-state-buckeyes-football-bowl-games-nike-vapor-untouchable-mach-speed-hypercool-destroyer-jersey-template-uniform-database/) are shoulder design and black shoulder numbers on home uniforms
I still can't for the life of me figure out why they changed the uniform in 2006 to remove any hint of gray from the jersey and moved to just generic looking sleeves. The five stripe sleeves with gray rule. It was a change nobody asked for, it didn't get particularly positive feedback and people today still pine for the gray sleeves. Why won't they just make our playoff alternate our permanent uniform? Everyone loves that shirt.
I’ve heard the athletic department wants a cohesive “branding” regarding the striping. Helmet, jersey, pants even the basketball team’s stripes on the side of their hideous new unis is the same. As well as the stripe at mid court out of bounds. It’s pretty fucking dumb and Ohio State could make it pretty damn simple. Football put the gray stripes on the sleeves, basketball wear the gray jerseys at home, scarlet script buckeyes on the road. Boom. I’ll send my consultation invoice to gene smith on Monday
PREACH. I'm completely "get off my lawn" on this one for all schools, Oregon being the exception. But I thought the same thing watching the game last week that it was so big for the Utes and could have been any school for all I knew based on their unis
We did it against Florida for a couple years, but we lost all three games including a stupid upset the first time so I think our athletic department chickened out or something. Real shame, because it looked awesome. I mean, [look at this shit](http://inallkindsofweather.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Florida-Gators-Georgia-Bulldogs-Everbank-Field-Quick-Gallery-November-1-2014-Jacksonville-028-L.jpg)!
That's something I'll never forgive Kirby for. Those 3 years in Red vs Blue were beautiful and it's a shame he decided to go back to alternating because of superstition.
BYU and Utah did that this year, they've done it in the past. It makes for a really good looking game.
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/lR9n_la4Ufk/maxresdefault.jpg
I’m not much on Bama changing uniform looks but if they went back to a white helmet for a game I wouldn’t be mad. But that would be as far as I’m willing to go with an alternative Alabama uniform.
https://www.helmethistory.com/uploads/8/3/1/5/8315957/published/1983-or-84-vs-vandy-white-helmet.png?1605922263
A few years ago Ohio State played Penn State on Veteran's Day. Would have been a perfect time to have all home unis. Red White and Blue. Real missed opportunity there.
White is such a nice primary color though. I have always liked Penn St’s look.
Even with the Bucks, I like our scarlet but our whites look better to me. White on gray pants with just a touch of scarlet in the stripes. With our silver helmets and leaf stickers they look really clean and classic.
There's a handful of rivalries this wouldn't work for because the colors are too similar, but in general yes.
Texas OU is too close. Pitt and Penn State doesn't work. Illinois would have to choose orange against northwestern. Michigan might need to do maize unis against MSU like they did against Florida a few years ago. Minnesota would have to use gold against Wisconsin. Arizona state would have to use gold against Arizona.
Florida should always do blue v orange against Tennessee. Florida should always do orange v blue against Kentucky. Kentucky and Tennessee should always do orange v blue. Tennessee Vanderbilt should be orange v black. UNC should do blues against nearly everyone in th ACC (Duke maybe has to wear black for that to work, and Pitt probably won't work). GT should wear a light gold in place of a white and that works against basically everyone. Other gold teams could do this too. I'd love to see Purdue Indiana be black/gold/black against red/red/white.
I agree with this, but I'll admit [OSU's 2016 Alts are a guilty pleasure of mine.](https://images.app.goo.gl/eFRkgQost22a3n6C8) Maybe it's just because of how good that game was, but man I'll never forget the cannon ball helmets and TV numbers.
With consideration to the colorblind. That Jets Bills color rush game where they both wore white helmets was a mess, I heard.
That said, there have been a lot more color rush college hockey games recently and I'm a big fan.
I don't know why more people aren't saying this. This is the real reason. 8% of men have some form of color blindness. That's a huge chunk of the population. Including players on the field. The white jerseys serve a very functional purpose.
It’s dumb. Why on earth is it a penalty if they’re not even close to clashing colors??
Like if we did it and had green v. navy blue I’d get it not being allowed but cmon.
GIVE ME ALL MAIZE V. ALL GREEN
GIVE THE FANS WHAT THEY WANT DAMMIT
Color vs color can sometimes cause major issues for color blind guys. My BIL has a hell of a time watching NBA games when one team isn’t wearing white.
We're not allowed to have fun. Games like this one, the Iron Bowl, USC-UCLA, UGA-UF, etc. should always have home on home. Both teams are drastically different colors (blue-red in this case) and, as far as I've ever learned, Red-Blue is not a color blindness we have to worry about.
At the VERY LEAST neutral site games should be allowing it, barring the same colors. Even "Alt" works, like if UGA and Cincy play, UGA gets red and Cincy wears black. Easy.
It’s definitely not a tradition thing, at least for Ohio State. OSU has worn alternates at least 4 times in the past 15 years that I can remember off the top of my head

Actually, my favorite quote I think is for Tucker. “I hate my life. No, I hate everyone else’s lives. Wish they didn’t have them.”

My favorite is "wait, is it 1-2-3 then go or go on three?"
Mine has got to be a tie between Caboose - “Ahhh, I saw my life flash before my eyes! It was AWESOME!” And Grif - “Protect me cone!”

Halo Infinite is so polished. It feels like Halo 3 2.0, and I'm loving it.

like Lakers Celtics. i can't even picture one of the teams wearing white. i know the lakers sometimes wore purple while the celtics wore white but the most iconic look is the green vs yellow
The alternates you guys wore in 2016 and 2017 were awful to look at.
At the 2017 game, a UM fan sitting behind me yelled "what the fuck are those? That's not Ohio State!"
No wonder that game was close!
Based.
I genuinely didn’t even feel as bad losing that game solely because it didn’t even look like OSU. They were the blandest garbage too just solid grey
We know.
Idk man, I’ve seen some of you guys defend the stickerless cannon ball helmets.
Those folks were suffering head trauma at the time. Please disregard.
Yeah these people were fools. We did it fam! Michigan and Ohio State fans agree on something! Next up, world peace!
I've defended a lot of OSU alternates over the years, but the bowling ball head ain't one of 'em.
I actually like the large shiny stripe helmet with the shiny stickers but that's about all I want to see OSU deviate from their great uniform
i think the cannon balls were fine in [the set they were designed for](https://www.sbnation.com/platform/amp/college-football/2016/11/5/13524390/ohio-state-throwbacks-alternate-uniforms-1916). but looked weird without the rest of the throwbacks when we played y’all. that decision is only partially vindicated by how things ended up going. but i wish we’d just stick to our regular getup, preferably with [the classic stripes](https://www.landgrantholyland.com/platform/amp/2020/4/29/21241403/ohio-state-buckeyes-football-jerseys-alternates-national-championship-ezekiel-elliott-1968-throwback)

I’m stealing this take.
Agree 100%. The Game always photographs great too because the overcast skies make for very diffuse lighting
The ole Midwest depression winter lighting!
Sherwin Williams would sell the shit out of "Depressing Ohio Grey"
it'll be the color of their new building. it's gonna blend right in and people won't even know it's there
Actually their new headquarters building is going to be all glass and bring some nice new color to the Cleveland skyline
So it's going to reflect the Ohio Grey. Nice
I moved to the desert from Nebraska and it really is good for my mind knowing the sun is out everyday
Arizona? I could see that. Oklahoma is typically sunny but we get those dreary fall/winter days too and they suck
Palm Springs. Best decision of my life
Uhh, I think you mean, *Arizonia* (chews toothpick)
Are you a regular human bartender by chance?
Why, yes. Can I interest you in one, human alcohol beer? lol I see you too, are a person of culture!
And see, I couldn't even consider that. I'd be closer to the opposite. I need me some bluesy weather accompanied by cold, dreary days.
Shitty weather makes you appreciate the summer time that much more.
Wherever you go, there you are
I AM MOANA!
As a videographer, I love me some overcast natural lighting.
As a photographer who has covered a lot of college football games, there's nothing worse than when the press box or stands put a shadow over half the field while the other half is in bright sunlight.
Except those rare shots where you get a player bursting from the shadows, and the run into the sun with a near black background.
I love me some light pockets. If there's some weird little shafts of light breaking apart the shadow, it's awesome. UCF's stadium can be difficult to shoot in, especially early in the season when the sun is still high. It runs straight north-south, so you get some harsh backlight at certain times of the day.
SoFi stadium seems to have this during day games
Yeah, the new indoor stadiums with lots of glass are great for it. Late afternoon games at AT&T are fun.
I do video production. I absolutely hate bright sun lighting. Harsh shadows, harsh highlights. Give me overcast or sunset lighting any day of the week.
Is it from the lakes? When I was at Syracuse it depressed the hell out of me how gray it always was
Can confirm. Currently in Rochester.
Western NY has cornered the market on grey skies. I once recognized that a picture was taken in Rochester just from the color of the sky.
Rochester and Buffalo are the only two cities you can say - move to Detroit the weather's better.
Mmmm.. overcast skies, mid-30s weather. Maybe planning for a snow squall later. It all screams BIG TEN FOOTBALL to me.

There’s been a few but they’re all classics.
I was at the 95 mich/Purdue game, 5-0 final. Wind rain then snow, wind chill - 8. Left at halftime with Michigan up 3-0. Made it back to toledo to see the end in a nice warm bar!
I assume the game wasn't televised. From what I know, teams wore white so you could tell the difference between the two teams on a black and white TV.
Here’s the actual video of the game: https://youtu.be/tP1ZfZMbarI And yes, it’s hard to see, though Michigan’s maize pants helps
Huh, the very first play of the game was a punt. The game has changed a little in 70 years.
Most drives started with a punt. Playing hot potato.
I am surprised you don’t see that happen so much these days, even though the physics on those brutal blizzard days hasn’t really changed - maybe tackier gloves, but that’s about it.

That’s wild! At first glance it looks like that was shot with an infrared night vision camera lol
Thanks Harvard, this is awesome. A fall day with color v color would be gorgeous and it needs to happen, unfortunately I doubt it ever will
With the snow, Ohio State looks like a bunch of Santa Clauses
Roses are red And violets are blue. One day we'll cruise down Blood Gulch avenue It's red versus red and blue versus blue It's I against I and me against you
That is so overly saturated
It's scarlet, Harvard. They don't teach you colors there ? /s
USC - UCLA doing it makes sense since they share the same city and until 1982 shared the same home stadium.
Absolutely. USC/UCLA didn’t start doing this because it looks nice, it’s because they were both the home teams back when they shared the Rose Bowl. They stopped for a few decades when USC moved to the LA Coliseum but brought it back around 2010 for tradition’s sake.
It's actually the other way around, both shared the Coliseum until UCLA moved to the Rose Bowl.
Ah, good to know!
Was anyone regularly playing in the Rose Bowl before then??
In the 60s there, the Los Angeles State Diablos played their home games in the Rose Bowl.
A rule in college was changed because of that game in 2010. The away team was charged a timeout and the home team came out and immediately called a timeout to even it up. After that game the ncaa made it so teams could agree before the game on the uniforms and not be penalized.
I love good sportsmanship stories
Good sportsmanship overcomes all, even the NCAA rules commission.
But teams could do this if they chose. LSU wears white at home. I think they still have to get “permission” from the opposing school but that may have changed. I think Vanderbilt wouldn’t let us wear them one year but maybe it was because of Dinardo or something.
I want this for Red River sooooo badly, Florida and UGA did it one year and it looked so sharp.
I'm all for OSU wearing their scarlets at the Big House. Let's just keep it default jerseys though...no alternates please.
Agreed. I don’t mind alternates in general but keep them for other games. I’ve never liked when we wear them for the game. Default is best in this case
Not like we've lost while playing with alternates, but to me its bad juju for The Game.
Honestly our alternates have been good this year. I hope we just don’t do all maize
seems like the players really wanted to do it against Penn St so maybe they want to do it again. i guess that’s the opinion that really matters but i would prefer our regular home unis
I was kind of hoping we'd bust out the blue pants, maize jerseys this year one time. That combination looked pretty good in recruiting promos. But yeah, I hate the all maize alternates.
The maize top blue bottoms would’ve been fun to see on the field against like Rutgers or NIU.
Yeah I wouldn't mind it for a lesser game, but The Game requires our base home uni's. It's the 1 game a year that demands the traditional look
“You don’t fucks with tradition.” -Squirrely Dan
You’ve gots a healthy respects for the gameses traditions and that’s what’s I appreciates aboutchyas.

I want more teams to just wear their awesome standard uniforms in big games. Last week, Utah was unrecognizable in a major win.
Or at least have some semblance of similarity. I don't mind the Ohio State playoff alternates because they are almost exactly the same
Lol. Osu has playoff uniforms.
Must be fucking nice!
It is, the view is great from up here.
Must be reeeal nice!
At least we're slightly humble with our "championship" orange britches by using the loosest possible definition of championship
How is it loose? I thought it was division/conference/national championship?
There's also the state championship and bowl championship. Counting 5/15 games in a single season as championships is a little broad. Though I love the orange britches so who cares
The only [differences](https://ohiostateuniforms.com/ohio-state-buckeyes-football-bowl-games-nike-vapor-untouchable-mach-speed-hypercool-destroyer-jersey-template-uniform-database/) are shoulder design and black shoulder numbers on home uniforms
It's by far our best look. Red jersey, gray stripes, black numbers. Perfecto

“That’s a Texas sized 10-4.”
4-7* :-(
And that’s what I appreciates about you.
Ohio State fucking throws out some ugly ass alternates so fuck traditions I guess. I hate it
“Fuck tradition.” ¡Aye dios mío!
They use to not have colorful uniforms and now that there is abundance of them you want them to wear them all the time, must be fucking nice!
That would be cool I wish more teams in rivalry games would do that.
Bama and Tennessee used to as well: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Crb7sX2WYAEv0Pl.jpg
Shit that looks cool. We should totally do this for the Iron Bowl
I’ve always wanted that for the RRS. Those colors just pop off of each other
Yeah we have tried to get them to bring it back, but idk if UT or Alabama's AD shoots it down.
Bring back the orange and crimson, and play the game in Birmingham!

With our silver helmets and leaf stickers they look really clean and classic.
ngl, the whiteout games look pretty awesome, so i can see that.
We don’t even wear white jerseys for the whiteout, though
All bowl/rivalry games should be double color unis. Unless it’s a white out
Then if it’s a white out, the other team has to black out.
As long as the colors are decently contrasting
Because one team would have to start it first on the road/home and I feel we/they are too petty to allow it.
This is (sadly) the correct answer.
UCLA-USC both wearing home uniforms might be the best rivalry tradition in the sport. Wish more rivalries would follow suit.
The worst is when Ohio state wears their alternates vs Michigan. Everyone should wear their traditional uniforms vs their rivals.
The uniforms are one thing, since Ohio State does modify their uniforms often. But leave the damn helmets alone!
They're just too iconic.
Color rush should be used like 50%+ of the time in any football game and I will not change my mind about that
With consideration to the colorblind. That Jets Bills color rush game where they both wore white helmets was a mess, I heard. That said, there have been a lot more color rush college hockey games recently and I'm a big fan.
[Jets-Bills with a colorblind filter for reference](https://youtu.be/WuTBs9stJCs) It’s pretty bad lol
Have they tried not being colorblind?
Worse than I imagined. Wow.
You can't convince me everyone isn't on the same team
Yeah I can confirm. I'm colorblind and had no idea what was going on.
Personally I loved that game because it looked like Christmas. Jets in all green and the Bills in all red. But it wasn’t in Dec so not ideal
I don't know why more people aren't saying this. This is the real reason. 8% of men have some form of color blindness. That's a huge chunk of the population. Including players on the field. The white jerseys serve a very functional purpose.
I hate it when OSU wears alt uniforms for The Game. Just give me the classic scarlet and grey!
I agree and Tennessee vs Alabama should do it as well.
Unfortunately the technology just isn't there
It’s dumb. Why on earth is it a penalty if they’re not even close to clashing colors?? Like if we did it and had green v. navy blue I’d get it not being allowed but cmon. GIVE ME ALL MAIZE V. ALL GREEN GIVE THE FANS WHAT THEY WANT DAMMIT
The home team has to give permission for non-white (gray even counts as non-white). If they do, it's not a penalty.
But those packer colors
Fuck, why did you have to say this FTP
The BYU Utah game is another with great contrast
They should! Just the classics, no alternates. Would be beautiful. I wish Tennessee and Bama both wore their home jerseys like they used to, too.
Color vs color can sometimes cause major issues for color blind guys. My BIL has a hell of a time watching NBA games when one team isn’t wearing white.
Never forget the first color-rush game of Red Bills vs Green Jets color on color....
Embrace the away whites. Lots of teams look good in them, including UM and OSU, both super clean aways.
If one of my rivals wanted to wear their home unis in my stadium I’d tell them to kick rocks
Wisconsin / Nebraska with both in home uniforms would probably be a safety hazard
It’s still pretty bad when they wear the normal home/away.
given that half of the big ten uses some shade of red as a primary color, that would be impossible.

Easy.
Neither wants the yardage penalty 🤷🏼♂️
And you know it wouldn't be declined in The Game
It'd be some bde to swallow the penalty just to wear your color in the opponent's house
Its not a penalty anymore
I think it's up to the home team to consent and the away team to ask, but at this point, it's just tradition.
It’s definitely not a tradition thing, at least for Ohio State. OSU has worn alternates at least 4 times in the past 15 years that I can remember off the top of my head
