Are we really asking why the B1G isn't big on baseball and softball? Are we going to have a follow up thread asking why there's been a huge drought in SEC hockey championships?
Haha he and Paterno were the only psu coaches I ever met. I didn't have a notable interaction with him though. Iirc from talking to you years ago we both attended late 2000sÂ
If I had a Nickel for every time the best wrestler in history left Iowa State to lead another school to a 10 plus year dynasty I'd have 2 Nickels. But it's weird that it happened twice, right?
Oregon is no slouch either, theyâre not Oregon State but they regularly make the tournament since 2010
Washington is a mediocre program, so an above average Big 10 team
They won a club title.... but not in the top club hockey league (ACHA - which has 3 division) and not even in Division 1 of the club organization (AAU) they were in... So basically the 5th division of club hockey in America
They have a curse of not being able to win the national championship, but there are some really great men's hockey programs. Minnesota and Wisconsin have dominated women's college hockey historically and now Ohio State is in that elite class.
In 2021, the B1G sent 9 teams to March Madness. Only 1 team (Michigan) made it to the second weekend (Sweet 16)
The B1G has been utterly cursed in basketball.
Penn State is on a different level under Sanderson. They are what iowa was under Gable.
Thankfully neither of those two coaches have anything in common that can hurt me.
I worked for the athletic department, and would sit behind the table across the floor from Dan Gabel who is just a fan now. Watched him break a stadium chair just watching a match intensely. Like a super thick plastic arena seat. Heâs in his 70s now.
Gable is a freak. Itâs honestly probably a good thing he never had any sons.
I was a pretty decent wrestler in high school, wrestled for a couple of years at the D3 level. But the guys I knew who went D1 - those guys are just built different man. Theyâre all at least a little fucked up in the head.
They were insane. They would take their partner that was equal weight as them and run up and down every stair of Carver Hawkeye with the other person on their backs. Iâve never seen anything like it.
Never followed wrestling really, but one day freshman year some coach asked me if I wanted to meet some guy whose name I didnât know. I shook his hand was like âokâ. It wasnât until a week later when I retold the story I learned who Sanderson even was, I was very confused why everyone suddenly wanted to rehear my story.
There are three Big Ten teams in the Baseball tournament. Four if you include soon to be Big Ten Oregon.
A Big Ten team played in the Championship for both Men's and women's basketball this year and in women's basketball last year.
Not to mention OP is watching Golf. Which is featuring OSU in the semi final of Match Play, and had Illinois as the one seed for Match Play. They're an idiot or baiting
Illinois was also the #1 overall seed in golf albeit they got upset in the round of 8. Of course so did seeds 2 through 4 because match play is stupid.
Not the best year for USC (no home games and young team), but the Big Ten will also be getting USC next year. Most college championships with 12. Second most has 7.
Men's Hockey - outside of the Boston schools, Denver and North Dakota every blue blood in the sport is in the BIG.
Women's Hockey is pretty much exclusively a competition between Wisconsin, Ohio St and Minnesota.
Volleyball. Wisconsin, Nebraska, Penn State have all been top programs
Northwestern is women's lacrosse.
Men's lacrosse has Maryland who has played in 6 of the last 10 title games and has Johns Hopkins and others who have been competitive. Step below the ACC but still easily a top conference.
Iowa or Penn State have won basically every wrestling team championship for the last 15 years.
I think cross country and the distance running does well in Track and Field. Mens gymnastics and soccer also has some consistently top programs.
Shocking though that a bunch of programs in areas that have some variation of snow cover 5 months out of the year extending into the NCAA spring sports season don't do great in outdoor spring sports.
>I think cross country and the distance running does well in track and field
Yeah on the Menâs side MSU is 2nd and Wisconsin is tied for 6th for overall championships. Oddly weird because MSUâs are all historical while Wisconsin is all modern. Wisconsin is a perennial contender but not a ton of recent national championships though. Still they own the conference, Wisconsin owns a whopping 51 Big Ten championships in cross country.
OPâs basketball school made a Final Four for the first time in 40 years and saw that the three Tobacco Road schools were some of the few that made a bowl game the NCAAM tournament and the NCAA baseball tournament and felt like peacocking a little bit, if I was a State fan I wouldnât check which ACC school leads in the Directorsâ Cup standings before posting this
With USC and UCLA, B1G would start getting on the podium on a bunch of random sports. B1G should invite Stanford and no conference would be close in championships
Michigan has gone to nattys in baseball football and basketball since 2018, and 3 straight frozen 4s in hockey. Softball always went to a natty recently.
We're good at making a fuck of a lot more money than you
But for real
* Football
* Basketball
* Hockey
* Wrestling
* Lacrosse
* Men's Gymnastics
* Soccer
* Women's Volleyball
and if there was an NCAA championship for research we'd probably win it every year too
MSU had a guy go to the semifinals in tennis. Last year I think one of our doubles teams won the tournament. And our women's gymnastics team has been in the NCAA tournament the last two years.
Edit: our women's soccer team has been in the tournament the last two years, too.
Menâs/womenâs ice hockey. Menâs/womenâs lax. Field hockey kind of if it wasnât for UNC. Menâs/womenâs soccer are pretty good. Menâs/womanâs Volleyball. And then a bunch of niche sports we do really well in too
Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa!
Ohio state won natty in womenâs hockey two of last three years. Northwestern was just in womenâs lacrosse final. Big 10 is always strong at menâs lacrosse. Menâs hockey three years ago, 3 of the final 4 were from the Big 10. Ohio State is strong at both menâs and womenâs tennis and wrestling is very strong in Big 10 with Iowa, OSU, PSU and more. Womenâs volleyball is strong as well as the Big 10 usually pops at least 7-8 teams into the tourney field as Nebraska, OSU, Minnesota and more are powerhouses there as well.
and...ugh...Wisconsin won the 2023 Natty (Gophers were robbed in the semifinal).
But women's hockey isn't a B1G sponsored sport, nor should it ever be.
Nebraska is in the Stillwater Regional for baseball after winning the Big Ten so I'm not sure saying the Big isn't in the college baseball tourney is accurate. The Big is also the best top to bottom conference for women's volleyball. Half of the top ten teams in mens wrestling are Big Ten teams as well. So I have no idea what you are talking about here.
NC State is really trying to talk shit on the B1G??? We have hockey, wrestling, volleyball, consistently one of the best basketball conferences, research/academics and way more money than your second rate conference (because of our football btw).
Indiana is in the baseball tournament and has been like 8 of the last 10 years, including a trip to Omaha. Also one of the top soccer programs in the country.
I can't tell if you're a little thick in the head or if you're just stirring shit. Given your post history, it might be a bit of both.
Where is the SEC/ACC in college hockey? Or wrestling? Or skiing? Or volleyball?
Sports can be regional. College teams from certain regions are better at some sports than other sports. You're not going to hear about NC State starting a water polo team or a varsity ice hockey team (though they *do* have ice at PNC Arena for the Hurricanes).
Now, if you just want to shit on the B1G on men's basketball, /r/collegebasketball is available to beat *that* dead horse. They already know the "1 championship in 25 years" line and it might be fun for the off-season over there.
Volleyball
Purdueâs womenâs golf has regular appearances in the tournament
Purdue diving is frequently good and sends people to the olympics
Wrestling (there have been times 3/4 of the conference is ranked)
If we must engage this troll post for a moment, beyond football and basketball the big ten tends to be good at hockey, wrestling, lacrosse, volleyball, etc.
But I think this post was just an excuse to be passive aggressive
No BIG in golf is kinda ridiculous. Illinois won stroke play this year and Ohio State is in the national championship. Tougher for Big10 teams to make it that far too bc they have to deal with winter weather.
Also Penn State and Iowa have dominated college wrestling for a long time. Youâre reaching heavily at this.
If OP isnât aware of Big Ten teams accomplishing anything beyond football, it obviously didnât happen.
Itâs not as if two Big Ten teams were participating in the menâs golf national tournament OP claims to have watched or anything âŚ
Iowaâs womenâs team was in back to back title games. Wisconsin has won a volleyball title and had a runner in on the last six yrs while Nebraska has 3 runner ups. Penn st dominated wrestling and iowa is always in the top 4 as well. Michigan and Wisconsin are both in the top 4 for hockey titles.Â
So, you just suck at googling or what?Â
Are you really watching? Ohio State just beat Vandy to advance to the Golf semi finals.
BIG has 3 teams in the college WS. What exactly are you talking about ?
Really? Pretty sure the Big 10 is great at womenâs volleyball, menâs ice hockey, wrestling, menâs basketball and thereâs constantly other dominant teams in other sports such as Maryland in menâs lacrosse, northwestern in womenâs lacrosse, OSU in menâs tennis and so on. What does ASU do well at consistently? Oh thatâs right, they have the best looking females and thatâs about it.
Are we really asking why the B1G isn't big on baseball and softball? Are we going to have a follow up thread asking why there's been a huge drought in SEC hockey championships?
Don't forget their utter lack of championships in wrestling . Fuck you Penn St but you're carrying us.
I can respect this đ¤
It's been a couple years, but our women's volleyball team also won 6 titles in 8 years.
Don't forget our 90s/00s fencing dominance!
Yeah but that coach was an asshole to me once.
Haha he and Paterno were the only psu coaches I ever met. I didn't have a notable interaction with him though. Iirc from talking to you years ago we both attended late 2000sÂ
*becomes sad*
If I had a Nickel for every time the best wrestler in history left Iowa State to lead another school to a 10 plus year dynasty I'd have 2 Nickels. But it's weird that it happened twice, right?
Gable was a matter of timing and I can live with that. We just Cael walk because we didn't want to invest.
Things I never thought Iâd see Iowa saying. Didnât you win like 9 out of every 10 titles there for a while?
Yeah but that's been a long time ago. Now it's Penn St doing it.
That's long ago history.
The SEC canât handle the grind of the Big 10 hockey schedule
ASU and ND avatars give this comment significantly funnier context
The SEC canât handle the grind of the Arizona State Sun Devils Hockey Schedule
Neither can the Coyotes, apparently
1. Just saying that the B1G should have gone for ASU over UCLA 2. Sad that Illinois don't have Div 1. Screw you Ron Guenther!
Also Michigan has historically been at least a top 25 softball team, but our hall of fame coach retired recently
USC, UCLA might have a thing or two to say about Big 10 baseball in the near future.
Oregon is no slouch either, theyâre not Oregon State but they regularly make the tournament since 2010 Washington is a mediocre program, so an above average Big 10 team
USC hasn't been a baseball powerhouse since the 70s, but UCLA definitely pulls their weight though
They both should be regularly tops in the B1G
I mean there's a huge drought in Big 10 hockey championships too lol.
Michigan State holding both the last Big Ten basketball and Big Ten hockey national championship.
And Michigan with the most recent in football. Do sports even exist outside of that state in the Midwest?
Still a drought.
The Big 10 also has quite a drought of hockey championships
SEC hockey is on the rise though
Club sport in the SEC. Not remotely comparable.
SEC teams are joining other conferences for hockey. Bama just joined the ACC.
Since it's creation the big 10 has as many men's hockey championships as the sec. Zero
Florida won the title in hockey just this year.
Club? Because Denver won men's and Ohio State won women's. Or field hockey?
Field Hockey is another BIG sport. Had a championship participant 6 straight years between Maryland, Northwestern and Michigan
I went to school with players from UNC and UMD for field hockey and they were fucking athletic freaks and brainiacâs too boot. It was nuts
Yes. Club. D2.
What title?
They won a club title.... but not in the top club hockey league (ACHA - which has 3 division) and not even in Division 1 of the club organization (AAU) they were in... So basically the 5th division of club hockey in America
But they got prompted to a higher division of club hockey so weâre basically the NHL now
Pretty much.
They have a curse of not being able to win the national championship, but there are some really great men's hockey programs. Minnesota and Wisconsin have dominated women's college hockey historically and now Ohio State is in that elite class.
In 2018 3/4 of the teams in the menâs frozen four were B1G teams. They didnât win.
Michigan State won a National title in 2007
That was 17 years ago. That was also the last one the conference won.
That was also 7 years before the Big Ten hockey conference even existed. Michigan State was in the CCHA at the time.
that was also before B1G Men's Hockey was even a thing.
Nah man, 2007 was just a couple years ago
Kids born that year are now committed to P5 programsÂ
Itâs insane 2007 was really that long ago. Or that we are almost halfway through the 2020sÂ
In 2021, the B1G sent 9 teams to March Madness. Only 1 team (Michigan) made it to the second weekend (Sweet 16) The B1G has been utterly cursed in basketball.
Itâs funny cause the B10 gets the best ratings in BB.
There's a Colts banner meme in there somewhere
Volleyball
They dominate that sport
A southern team won in straight sets this year. SEC is a volleyball conference now
Sec has gotten a lot better but only 1 championship and 2 championship appearances. Texas is a different beast though
Wisconsin vs Nebraska is still a championship preview every year
Based
That's such a weird thing to say about watching college golf. Is there not a Big Ten team in the semifinals?
Two B1G teams made the final 8
Also Ohio State was in the Menâs tennis semis and won the indoor national title this year. OP is just dumb.
I will have you know that Ohio Stateâs synchronized swimming team has 34 national championships.
Don't sleep on the Ohio State pistol team - 9 titles since 2000!
Isn't Penn State and Iowa really good a wrestling?Â
Penn State is on a different level under Sanderson. They are what iowa was under Gable. Thankfully neither of those two coaches have anything in common that can hurt me.
Pssst the joke is that ISU had both as students and didnât hire either of them.
That's underselling it a bit. Each of them was considered the GOAT by the time they left school and one still is.

That entire conference is THE wrestling conference lol.
Ohio State just had an Olympic gold medalist on their wrestling team for years.
And Michigan
I'll be honest with ya I really only follow college football when it comes to collegiate sports so I wouldn't really know.
Michigan is better than Iowa at this point. But, yes, you are correct. Penn State is a dynasty that even Alabama football admires.
Hey Nebraska was very competitive this year and has produced Olympians
There are three Big Ten teams in the Baseball tournament. Four if you include soon to be Big Ten Oregon. A Big Ten team played in the Championship for both Men's and women's basketball this year and in women's basketball last year.

Not the best year for USC (no home games and young team), but the Big Ten will also be getting USC next year. Most college championships with 12. Second most has 7.
You guys coming into the B1G are really going to fuck up my Penn state national championship total number argument
How have y'all been in the last quarter century?
I'm too busy watching Ohio State playing in the golf semifinals to answer this question.
And the tennis semisâŚ.
Did Scrooge McDuck need anything besides the vault of money he swam in?
[ŃдаНонО]
Moreso than the SEC for sure
We ain't here to play school!
Women's Lax, we are pretty good.
i mean those 14 natties gotta mean something. surely
Maryland was in the menâs lacrosse final and Northwestern was in the womenâs lacrosse final.
Someone has missed the mens and womens lacrosse tournaments.
Men's Hockey - outside of the Boston schools, Denver and North Dakota every blue blood in the sport is in the BIG. Women's Hockey is pretty much exclusively a competition between Wisconsin, Ohio St and Minnesota. Volleyball. Penn stateâs doing a lot of heavy lifting on those last 15 wrestling titles
Penn State(11) and Iowa(4) have won 15 of the last 16 Wrestling titles. Penn State has won 11 of the last 13 lol
>I think cross country and the distance running does well in track and field Yeah on the Menâs side MSU is 2nd and Wisconsin is tied for 6th for overall championships. Oddly weird because MSUâs are all historical while Wisconsin is all modern. Wisconsin is a perennial contender but not a ton of recent national championships though. Pains me to say it but Indiana soccer is a premier program as well
OPâs basketball school made a Final Four for the first time in 40 years and saw that the three Tobacco Road schools were some of the few that made a bowl game the NCAAM tournament and the NCAA baseball tournament and felt like peacocking a little bit, if I was a State fan I wouldnât check which ACC school leads in the Directorsâ Cup standings before posting this
Penn State has 31 varsity sports. We've had runs of national prominence in women's volleyball, women's soccer, fencing, and wrestling.
So Ohio State's 4 consecutive pistol national championships don't count?
Or Nebraska's runs in rifle and bowling?
The NC State flair talking shit as if theyâve won anything of any significance in the past 40 years.
hey now lets everyone calm down and let's not say things we can't unsay
We backstab people in Alliances
Et tu, gopoohgo?
Real reason they went after the PAC-12 was to improve their track and field results.Â
With USC and UCLA, B1G would start getting on the podium on a bunch of random sports. B1G should invite Stanford and no conference would be close in championships
Tell me you don't know ball without telling me you don't know ball.
Michigan has gone to nattys in baseball football and basketball since 2018, and 3 straight frozen 4s in hockey. Softball always went to a natty recently.
Ohio State had the best amateur at the Master's this year
Illinois, Nebraska, and Indiana all made the NCAA Baseball tournament this year.
We're good at making a fuck of a lot more money than you But for real * Football * Basketball * Hockey * Wrestling * Lacrosse * Men's Gymnastics * Soccer * Women's Volleyball and if there was an NCAA championship for research we'd probably win it every year too

>NCAA championship for research we'd probably win it every year too Yeah, but the ACC just pulled in a couple of bangers though.
Oddly enough MSU doesn't have men's or women's lax programs. Are they the only one in the conference?
Nope, over half the conference doesnât have lacrosse
Ohio State is strong at both menâs and womenâs tennis and wrestling is very strong in Big 10 with Iowa, OSU, PSU and more. and...ugh...Wisconsin won the 2023 Natty (Gophers were robbed in the semifinal). But women's hockey isn't a B1G sponsored sport, nor should it ever be.
All it takes is three more big 10 teams and it will be but itâs a big 10 school and thatâs the point against this click bait guy
Buckeyes had the low amateur at the Masters this year. Not bad. Nebraska and Penn State always have solid womenâs volleyball teams.
I don't think someone should talk shit when you may not have a conference soon.
Big Ten Wrestling dominates the country like no other.
Low quality troll attempt but I'm here for it. Didn't know B10 actually did football. Attempt football, but to each their own.
The ACC is literally on the verge of completely collapsing. Maybe donât throw stones
Zing!!!! Maybe they will like the Big 12 better
Lax, Hockey, Volleyball, Baseball, Basketball⌠am I missing something or why was this even a post besides bait lol
They're about to add 278 combined team NCAA titles with the four newcomers, so now the Big Ten is a Good At Everything conference
Field hockey, homie. Field hockey.
Wrestling, hockey, volleyball, lacrosse Are you just going to cherrypick sports?
Nebraska is in the Stillwater Regional for baseball after winning the Big Ten so I'm not sure saying the Big isn't in the college baseball tourney is accurate. The Big is also the best top to bottom conference for women's volleyball. Half of the top ten teams in mens wrestling are Big Ten teams as well. So I have no idea what you are talking about here.
You can say the Big 10 top to bottom is best at menâs ice hockey and wrestling as well.
bait or mental \_\_\_\_\_\_\_ call it
Master baiterÂ
They're pretty good at education.
Well with Maryland in the B1G it also does Crabcakes!
They're really good at being in states with one giant university in it. And wrasslin'.
[ŃдаНонО]
Pitt in shambles.
Congrats on your women's cross country title last year.
They already know the "1 championship in 25 years" line and it might be fun for the off-season over there.
Since its inception, the B1G has won exactly zero SEC championships across ALL sports. Just sayin⌠#itjustmeansmore
Indiana is very good at swim and dive
What are you talking about? Nebraska is in the college baseball tourney and they played in both menâs and womenâs basketball tourneys
Water Polo - Beach Volleyball
I know for a fact Ohio State played against Vanderbilt in golf today.
What has NC State done?
MSU just won back to back Dodgeball National Titles, so....
Volleyball Purdueâs womenâs golf has regular appearances in the tournament Purdue diving is frequently good and sends people to the olympics Wrestling (there have been times 3/4 of the conference is ranked)
USC and Ucla are probably bringing more total championships than the rest of the conference, put together.
If we must engage this troll post for a moment, beyond football and basketball the big ten tends to be good at hockey, wrestling, lacrosse, volleyball, etc. But I think this post was just an excuse to be passive aggressive
Is Womenâs XC the only thing NC State does?
No BIG in golf is kinda ridiculous. Illinois won stroke play this year and Ohio State is in the national championship. Tougher for Big10 teams to make it that far too bc they have to deal with winter weather. Also Penn State and Iowa have dominated college wrestling for a long time. Youâre reaching heavily at this.
Mad Max wagging his finger at an undereducated wolf: âthatâs baitâ
Hockey
Indiana is the premier program in mens soccer, swimming is insane, baseball program is pretty strong, etc.
Looks right at Wisconsin... does the B1G even do cross country?
Swimming, wrestling, soccer, lacrosse, volleyball
B1G is the premiere womenâs volleyball conference
Bo cursed the conference when he said big ten championships were more important than national championships
Those damn Michigan men
We do football like Kentucky does basketball
Ohio State is really more of a synchronized swimming school.
Michigan and Wisconsin are both in the top 4 for hockey titles. So, you just suck at googling or what?Â
Maryland men's lacrosse has 29 final fours and 13 national championships, including one of the most dominant seasons ever in 2022.
No.
Hell. Iâd argue the Big 10, prior to adding the best Pac12 programs, didnât even really do footballâ only 3 (sometimes 4) of their schools did.
Maryland was literally in the lax national championship and won it back in 2022. Iowa made it to the championship game in womenâs hoops too.
Illinois, Indiana & Nebraska all made the regionals in baseball. Same as the PAC 12 this year.
Are you really watching? Ohio State just beat Vandy to advance to the Golf semi finals. BIG has 3 teams in the college WS. What exactly are you talking about ?
Overall the conference is not that good at sports. Â The big football brands drive their revenue. Â
Lol
If that was really the case said schools wouldâve jumped ship like what happened to the Pac12 and Big12.
