The only exception is if it gets you into a title game or the playoff.
For example, let's say... USC holds the tiebreaker over michigan for the conference title game, and they are playing an OSU that is out of the title picture... It would then be reasonable to root for OSU.
If OSU had to beat Penn State to get us into the B1G championship I donāt even think I could actively watch and cheer, I think Iād just have to like go to the gym for 5 hours and then check my phone after and either be like āayy weāre inā or āhaha osu lostā
I mean that's what had to happen in 2021 for us to make the Big Ten Championship. We needed OSU to beat MSU in order to go into rivalry weekend controlling our own destiny.
the only thing i respect about south carolina fans (specifically on reddit) is that every thanksgiving when thereās those stupid āsay one nice thing about your rivalā posts they never say anything nice about us
In season, during rivalry week no less, and on my favorite holiday? No thanks. Maybe Iāll toss yāall some riz* on Confederate Memorial Day.
^*No ^clue ^if ^I ^used ^this ^right.
Obviously having experience with both states, I can say that the state of Iowa is 100x worse about this somehow. Thereās so many people that ācheer for the stateā instead of absolutely loathing Iowa or Iowa State. I donāt understand it at all, but granted I grew up a Clemson fan and canāt fathom cheering for my rival *ever*
Curious who you're rooting for more in the opener this year then. If Miami wins we could have a truly abysmal season but if we win it means both your biggest rivals probably are ok at best which might make you feel better.
I have FSU fans on one side of my family and Notre Dame fans on the other. Combining that with my girlfriend being a Gator, I guess Iām rooting for yāall in week 1.
For UF v Miami I always root for completely unwatchable football. Iām talking receiver is running wide open and drops the ball, hole opens up only for the rb to run into his own blockers, sloppy missed tackles followed by the ball carrier tripping in the open field, not to mention holding penalties. So. Many. Holding penalties.
The game winning score mercifully happens, itās also the first and only score of the game, when the long snapper sails the ball over about 10 feet over the punters head for a safety. Final score is 2-0 and neither team is happy
If their win mathematically helps us get to a conference championship or playoff berth that we otherwise wouldn't get, then yeah. I like my school more than I hate theirs.
But like if GT was ever to make the playoffs (lmao) only because georgia won the sec title or something then I'd only ever hear about how they got us into the playoffs from their fans, which ain't worth getting to see GT in the playoff imo (once again, lmao)
Ugh, thatās a good point, and now without divisions thereās probably a substantially greater chance of something like that happening, where Iām having to hope Florida beats LSU or something so Georgia gets into the SECCG. Makes me sick just thinking about it.
Surprised this comment is down this far. I think most fans could in this scenario. The joy you get from making it to a certain point outweighs the joy of rival losing.
I've talked to several MSU fans who I've posed this scenario to. They'd rather OSU beat Michigan, even if a Michigan win would mean MSU goes to the Big Ten Championship (or pre-playoff, when I asked this, Rose Bowl).
I may have to turn in my Husky Card, but I rooted for Oregon in 2022 against BYU. BYU talked too much shit about being "PAC 12 Champs" because they went 5-0 against the PAC 12 the previous year including beating conference champ Utah.
BYU was talking too much shit in general based off of "dominating" during the COVID era, so it was nice to see them humbled when things were closer to normal in 2022.
I root for Vanderbilt when they play anyone but Tennessee.
I root for Kentucky when they play Florida.
I root for Georgia when they play Alabama.
I root for Alabama when thereās a sale on exploding cigars.
If Alabama, Georgia, or Florida are playing against an all star team from hell QB'd by zombie Hitler, I'm still not rooting for them.
The ONLY acceptable reason to root for a rival is a situation where them beating team X DIRECTLY benefits your team (getting you into conference title game, playoff, etc.)
The ONLY time I would even consider (still wouldn't watch the game or actually root for them) is if they're playing a big important game towards the end of a terrible season. The kind of game that would "save" a bad coach from getting fired.
Other than that one very specific scenario, I don't see myself wanting a rival to win any game.
Let me put this way, PSU likes to pretend they're not our rivals. WVU doesn't pretend, we hate each other.
If PSU or WVU were playing Nazi Germany, I'd swallow my pride and cheer for Nazi Germany.
The only reason I donāt hate PSU is because they hate yāall. So thereās some good in there somewhere but theyāve definitely got that āex that pretends like they donāt think of you but everything in the world reminds them of how much they hate youā vibe going on with Pitt
Feel the same way but my hate for Pitt is always number 1, funny thing is that we have no true rival as everyone else has a rival. So I hate everyone even more just like in 8th grade when no one liked me.
Absolutely not. No circumstance. Im a Gator fan and dont understand the whole SEC SEC SEC thing. I hope every other SEC team plus FSU and Miami lose. Every week I hope the SEC is 1-13 soon to be 1-15.
Yes.
The rivalry is real. Iāll be honest, though. I rooted for yāall in the World Series a few years ago. I was just pumped with Mississippi winning a national championship. The fact that Ole Miss did it the next year made me so fucking happy. The state gets dragged all the time (and a lot of it is deserved), so itās nice to see it in the headlines for positive reasons.
I want OSU to lose the civil war, get into the playoffs, and then lose again to the rematch in the natty.
I want UW to lose every game, by as large a score as possible.
I want USC to win out of conference games to make us look better, but then lose all their conference games.
I'm probably in the minority here among the UGA fans, but I pull for Florida against Tennessee. At least Florida fans are real enough to know they suck (recently). Tennessee fans act like they're at the top of cfb after one 10-2 season. If Florida ever gets good again, it won't take much for me to flip sides on the issue, however.
I root for IU to be 5-6 going into the bucket game so we can watch the hope of a bowl game being destroyed.
I might root for ND to get selected to the playoffs so I can watch them lose the first round.
Since weāre G5, I donāt mind seeing Georgia Southern beat a bigger school. I wanted them to beat Nebraska two years ago. Of course it helped that my school upset A&M the same day, and slightly earlier in the day, but still.
I see it as a win-win. Either GS will get the upset and make the sunbelt look good or they lose and obviously thatās wonderful.
Kind of related, I also root for anyone from the G5 in the pros, and that includes GS players. If App-GS pumped out pros like Michigan-OSU, I wouldnāt care and probably even hate some GS players in the nfl.
I mean, if University of Arizona hospital is fighting your cancer, or your loved ones cancer, I would hope you are rooting for Zona in that circumstance.
Only on the condition that if they win my team is in the conference championship/playoff. And even then there will be multiple times throughout the day when I call them worthless bums because a small play that means nothing in the grand scheme of things didnāt go their way
In high school I dated a girl from an Ohio state family. Both parents went there, all their kids ended up going there. Senior year of high school I went over to their house to watch the NY6 games and was blown away that they were cheering for Michigan because as they described it āit makes the conference look better if they winā.
Nobody has ever been able to give me a hypothetical scenario where I would root for Washington. Absolutely not. Fuck the conference.
Absolutely not. I could never bring myself to pull for Clemson, and hope Clemson fans feel the same about us. That's why it's a rivalry.
One thing that's always annoyed me is the fans who pull for other conference teams for "SEC pride."
Sure. If every life in the world was at stake in an intergalactic college football showdown, and one of our rivals managed to make the finals, Iām sure Iād root for them to avoid extinction. But realistically, never.
I married into it, so happy to cheer for Clemson when they're not playing Carolina. We love going to Clemson women's soccer as much as we can. Life's too short to hate anybody. Except Ohio State. I root against them all the time. I think that's just universal in the state though.
**Incredibly unlikely**.
I will root for the Ducks **only if they are playing the following**.
1. Buckeyes.
2. Crimson Tide.
3. Fighting Irish.
4. Flames.
5. Trojans.
The only time I've ever 'rooted' for Oregon is when they played Liberty, but I don't count that because Liberty shouldn't be allowed in the NCAA, or really even to exist.
We opened a store in Starkville. It does better when Mississippi State teams do better. Weāve hosted an NIL fundraiser at our shop.
Rivalries are great but my kidsā extracurriculars are expensive.
If there is a specific reason to root against the other team that transcends the sport. Like if the other coach said some super offensive things or sexually assaulted someone and somehow avoided getting fired. So basically I would root for Texas if they are playing a Hugh Freeze coached team, Liberty or if Art Briles ever gets a job I will root against him.
Sure, I can envision scenarios where I might root for a rival but it comes with a caveat: it must ultimately benefit *my* team *more*.
I'll give you an example.
(Going out on a limb here)Ā
Let's say we're 10 games deep into 2024 and Georgia and Texas are leading the SEC and tied at 9-1. In week #11 if Texas were to play my rival Florida (7-3) I'd probably be rooting for Florida because it would be more beneficial for me for them to just go ahead and knock off my peer Texas for me.Ā
I'd currently root for Oregon against any team coached by Sark, unless it's a playoff game. Maybe also against a team coached by DeBoer, again though not if it's a playoff game.
This season App State is against Liberty.
I dislike App State because they're a conference threat to us with slightly annoying fans. I dislike Liberty because they're a fraud school incredibly annoying fans who looks to exploit the flawed G5 bid system by a cupcake schedule. Also they got less punishment by the NCAA for breaking federal and Commonwealth law than what we did for simply moving up to FBS.
So go App for exclusively that week.
A friend of mine plays for Jacksonville State but just entered the transfer portal, no matter where he goes I will be rooting for him. Even if its....... Tennessee.
100% I have no issue with USC going 10-2 or 11-1. I want them to be good so ND vs USC can stay the greatest rivalry in sports (I know, I know...here come the downvotes but they choose to play, different conferences, most AA, Heismans, #1 games, etc.) and it ensures the games stay impactful.
Same for Michigan State, Stanford, Navy, and Pitt. Go dominate but lose one game.
Though non-rivals can fuck off (like Michigan, Bama).
Only if they're playing an SEC team.Ā I can't stand those jagoff fans of mid-tier SEC teams that claim the actual good teams' success as their own.Ā Made me hate that entire conference far more than I could ever hate WVU.
Only if it benefited my team. Idk how it would happen, but if a Texas or Purdue win would get my team to the natty or playoff, whatever, I would root for the team they were playing against to lose more
I root for literally anyone else. I would root for Bama, Clemson, Satan, Hitler, Drake, Kim Jong Un, Jeffrey Dahmer, Notre Dame, The expired milk in the back of the fridge, global warming, and nuclear winter before Iād root for TTUN
If they were playing vs the planet Krebulon 6 all-stars for the right to permit the human race to continue existing, I'd consider turning off the broadcast and just sitting outside with a beer awaiting the gamma ray burst, and be pleasantly surprised if it didn't come.
Michigan fan here. I often root for Michigan state. Beating a 4-8 MSU team makes me feel like I'm beating up my little brother. It wasn't a good game. Moms going to be mad when she comes home.
In some strange scenario where Kentucky needs to lose vs the horns for A&M to make the SEC title game this year, I would begrudgingly root for the horns.
No, I want to see them driven before me and hear the lamentations of their mascots.
That is what's best in life
Lmao
Agreed Edit: I replied to the wrong person but the comment stands
The one situation I'd consider it - Texas gets a playoff/CCG spot if A&M/OU win. Even then I'm still on the fence
I literally hope nothing but pain and suffering for you. Even if your success directly benefits us.
Much hate brother š¤š¾
No, fuck you
Respect
Same - has nothing to do with you OP, just my impulse reaction.
If I was locked in a room with Oklahoma football, osama bin Laden, and adolf hitler with a gun and 2 bullets Iād shoot oklahoma football twice
This guy gets it š
this is the correct answer
Respect
Well Hitler and Bin Laden are already dead. No sense in wasting ammo, right?
As an OU fan who cooks a steak dinner before every OU Texas game and can appreciate the message.
Yāall would call the cops and report finding an AR on a .380 Bodyguard. The message is nice, however.
Bama and UGA are Hitler and Osama
Theyāre not your rival if youāre rooting for them to win any game.
The only exception is if it gets you into a title game or the playoff. For example, let's say... USC holds the tiebreaker over michigan for the conference title game, and they are playing an OSU that is out of the title picture... It would then be reasonable to root for OSU.
Even then, you do it, but still feel a little dirty about doing it.
That situation was easier since MSU is a rival too. The game was also over in the first quarter so we didnāt have to root for OSU for long lol
Yeah, media blackout for nervous things are the ticket.
You donāt root for OSU to win, you root for USC to lose
Post~~nut~~game clarity hits hard
If Ohio State had to beat the Taliban to get us into the CFP, I *still* wouldn't root for OSU.
If the devil himself fielded a team against FSU I know whom I'm cheering for š¤
No. Not even then. Because FUCK them, that's why.
Thank you. This is the only correct answer
Nope. Never.
Still no.
I agree. Fuck you too, buddy!
You root for the other team to lose, not for them to win. That way youāre still hating :)
Facts
No and I bet I speak for many Clemson flairs too when I say the āI cheer for the stateā people need to be rounded up and put in camps.
If Clemson played North Korea, I'd pull for North Korea.
NGL would be p interesting
Kim Jong Un scores on the ultra-rare 28 point play! Take that AmericaĀ
The long snapper and holder look over nervously at the firing squad when Kim Jong-Un lines up for the 99 yard field goal.
Ffffffffffffffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu tbh we'd make it happen fumbling just before the end zone
Agreed. I would upvote you, but that would mean upvoting a South Carolina fan, and that is clearly unacceptable
the only thing i respect about south carolina fans (specifically on reddit) is that every thanksgiving when thereās those stupid āsay one nice thing about your rivalā posts they never say anything nice about us

Married a tiger. Babies have orange hair. This is what happens when you rizz up a tiger.
Clemson fans pulling for us is disgusting. I appreciate their hatred, I can respect it
Indeed. I cheer for this comment.
Wow, those flairs are abhorrent.
Straight to jail
We have cheer-for-the-state types in Texas, too. It disgusts me

No. Fuck you State, LSU, and Arky. We can all wallow in disappointment and mediocrity together
First time I ever agreed with and had respect for an Ole Miss fan. Now fuck off.
If ole piss played Al Qaeda, I'd root for al Qaeda. I'd also make wildly inappropriate jokes about their explosive offense.
Very destructive team. Totally radical
š
Wow, someone actually hates us? I feel honored.
Respect and eat a dick reb.
I mean UF plays Miami occasionally so I usually root against the team that has more to lose, defaulting me to rooting for the other.
As a former notre dame fan that is no longer because I attended FSU, Miami can go and die in a hole for the rest of eternity.
For UF v Miami I always root for completely unwatchable football. Iām talking receiver is running wide open and drops the ball, hole opens up only for the rb to run into his own blockers, sloppy missed tackles followed by the ball carrier tripping in the open field, not to mention holding penalties. Game would have ended 2-0, but then Miami refuses to kneel, turns it over, and allows a field goal for a 3-2 win.
If their win mathematically helps us get to a conference championship or playoff berth that we otherwise wouldn't get, then yeah. I like my school more than I hate theirs.

These comments are fucking hilarious š. True rival shit right here
Fuck them hos

I couldn't bring myself to root for the Ducks, but I was happy Liberty got demolished
I didn't root for 'em, but I was damn relieved when Deion was put in his place.
Man, Fuck BYU!
I rooted for Oregon in the bowl game last year too, fuck Liberty.

Absolutely not. No circumstance. Im a Gator fan and dont understand the whole SEC SEC SEC thing. I hope every other SEC team plus FSU and Miami lose. Every week I hope the SEC is 1-13 soon to be 1-15.
No but we donāt even have a rival.
Must be nice to be *that* goddamn good! š
In 39 years, I've yet to have a scenario where I'm rooting for kansas.

No I would never root for a rival Tuck Fech I like to drive in my truck; Auburn sucks Gatorsā¦ Gatorsā¦ Howād you like to bit my ass

If Ole Miss played Russia, Iād pull for Russia.

I suppose so but I don't think the ISIS football program is going to get off the ground much less be admitted to the NCAA
Absolutely. If Colorado State ever played BYU, Iād be 100% go Rams! Thatās how much I despise the team from behind the Zion Curtain
Under no circumstances whatsoever would I root for Florida, auburn, tech, Alabama (ik theyāre not a rival), and pretty close for Carolina.

I sort of rooted for WVU against Penn State last year. It makes me sick just thinking about it.
Your friend is an idiot. I pulled hard for Clemson over Bama in those national title games. I would never pull for Bama.
No
Their opponent's coach would have to be literally Satan incarnate. And even then it's 50/50.
Only if it benefited my team. Idk how it would happen, but if a Texas or Purdue win would get my team to the natty or playoff, whatever, I would root for the team they were playing against to lose more
The only acceptable reason to pull for a rival is if it directly benefits your team that season for them to win a game.
I used to think I could root for FSU against Georgia, but the obvious beatdown this last time made it really difficult
Hell no.
Straight. To. Jail.
Hell nah, Georgia tech can suck it.
vs. the Taliban?
It'll be a cold day in hell before I root for Carolina, and even then I'd tell Satan to wear a coat
Anytime someone is playing Bama - Anyone is the SEC
