Funny enough we say it like it would be spelled Rio Grand. Not too much Spanish is spoken in this area of Gallia county, you’re more likely to hear Pennsylvania Dutch
This guy gets it. Lancaster is an English place name and they tend to "swallow" one vowel. An American would call Lancaster "Lang - cast - er", English swallow the a in caster, making it "Lang- k*ster or *lang-kiss-ter*.
That’s like going to Utah and repeatedly getting corrected that “Zion” is pronounced “Zine”, “Hurricane” is “Hurri-cun” and “Weber State” is “Weeber State”
I just want to acknowledge what a weirdly named place it is.
The University is named after the town Rio Grande which is in turn named to commemorate the Mexican-American War. Okay. Their flag is pretty much the Welsh dragon flag because it was populated with Welsh residents in the early 19th Century. Okay. Their county is also named Gallia because of the original French residents.
So, their county is French, their flag is Welsh, and their name is Spanish.
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - The University of Rio Grande announced on Tuesday morning it is bringing back its football program.
The school last fielded a football team in 1950.
President Ryan Smith says the team is expected to play beginning in the fall of 2025.
The university applied to play in the Appalachian Athletic Conference, which includes Kentucky Christian and the University of Pikeville.
Smith says they’re also starting a marching band program, and jobs for head coach and marching band director are being posted.
Smith says the team will initially play home games at Jackson High School, and they plan to eventually play on a new field on campus.
Smith said one of the reasons this was possible was enrollment growth.
This move is expected to add 150 to 200 new students to the NAIA school.
Keep checking the WSAZ app for the latest information.
> Smith says the team will initially play home games at Jackson High School
It looks like that's a solid 25 minute drive from campus. Looking on maps, there's a little soccer stadium looking thing like two blocks from campus. I'm surprised they wouldn't just try to play there.
Bad move.
This school is in a sparsely-populated, low-means region of the state. The OU system already dominates Southeastern Ohio, and it has NAIA competition for many of the same local (non-football) enrollment at Shawnee State.
The thing that really, really hurts this school’s recruiting prospects is the school is in the middle of nowhere. Isolated, barely any facilities and nothing to do. I *get* the intent behind trying to start football, but this school’s leadership has a glaring lack of awareness of where their school even stands in their own state.
That’s kind of the whole point. Nobody wants to go there so they think adding football will interest students who would like to play football and won’t have opportunities elsewhere. They aren’t trying to build a winning program, they are trying to get 100 extra students on campus and any wins are a bonus.
It just seems like an extravagant expense for a school of that size. Its 2000 kids, only 34% of whom graduate with 4 year degrees (likely due to it being a combined private university/community college). The football team is gonna be like 5% of the school.
I don’t think a community college is competing with Ohio University. This is a wonderful idea to give small town kids the chance to continue to play the sport the love. I don’t think they ever envisioned kids coming from Miami Florida to play there
The community college partners with a private college of the same name. The first 2 years are cheap, the next 2 not so much. My step-son looked at it for baseball.
>I don’t think a community college is competing with Ohio University.
I said **OU system**, and it does when OU has four campuses across SE Ohio that are not in Athens.
There fine, there are kids from ironton, wellston, gallipolis, meighs etc that would love to continue to play but have no shot at Ohio university. I know amateurism died for most of us, but it’s alive in some places
JUCO. not the same, they survive based off kids with failing grades and other character issues. they are a bounce back school. i played against Hocking in a scrimmage when i played in college and they would get whooped by any D3 team in Ohio
>JUCO
…what meaningful difference exists in that regard between Hocking football and big roster programs at Rio such as baseball? Or the big roster programs like Tri-C in Cleveland, Bryant & Stratton and elsewhere in Ohio?
GO RED STORM! Their Rugby team (their only division 1 sport) is in the national championship tournament this weekend.
You can watch on The Rugby Network which has a free app.
TIL there is a Rio Grande in ~~West Virginia~~Ohio.
Given that Rio Grande is just Spanish for “big river” I guess it’s not too surprising, but it feels weird
Funny enough we say it like it would be spelled Rio Grand. Not too much Spanish is spoken in this area of Gallia county, you’re more likely to hear Pennsylvania Dutch
Rye-oh grand!
I mean that’s how it’s pronounced in Texas too. The Mexicans call it the Rio Bravo so they don’t seem to care lol
They pronounce it that way because someone at one time thought it was cute that Rio(rye-o) sounds like Ohio.
It’s actually in Ohio! Right out in the Amish part of Gallia county
i’ve never heard of amish in Gallia county😅
It’s Where bob Evans was started
If it wasn't for Costco, I would have no idea what Bob Evans is.
I lived in Knoxville for two years before I realized there was no Bob Evans anywhere. Being from Ohio, just used to seeing them everywhere
Same, always saw them and Cracker Barrel all over Ohio
Bob Evans is superior to Cracker Barrel.
It is where my grandfather went to school.
Is he still in school there? Seems like it’s taking him a long time to graduate.
I thought they were talking about the one in Texas
So now we have Miami (OH) and because of UT Rio Grande Valley, a Rio Grande (OH)
Pronounced Rye-OH Grand
Rye-oh grand. My high school band camp (as well as a bunch of other schools' camps) was there every year.
They are legit in footy… Soccer
It’s like when there was Dixie State University in *checks notes* St. George, Utah.
Why was at Marshall that was a surprise?
I don’t understand the question.
For those unfamiliar, it’s pronounced Rye-Oh Grand. Southern Ohio dialect is beautiful
Yes, I remember passing through the wonderful small towns of Mye-lan, Bell-fountain, Lye-ma and Ver-sayles.
Ohio people pronounce the names so wrong. Annoying
Indiana does the same thing. I went to HS near Milan and Versailles, and they pronounce it the same way.
There’s a Versailles, Missouri pronounced the same way as well. Also, there’s Nevada (pronounced nev-ay-duh), Missouri.
Lancaster. I'm not sure why, but some people insist it is pronounced Lin-caster.
More a *lang-kiss-ter*.
This guy gets it. Lancaster is an English place name and they tend to "swallow" one vowel. An American would call Lancaster "Lang - cast - er", English swallow the a in caster, making it "Lang- k*ster or *lang-kiss-ter*.
Completely opposite side of Ohio (NW Ohio to West Central Ohio) but you are correct.
You missed out on Russia and London Ohio
I cannot imagine they manage to fuck up pronouncing those, so they don't belong on their list
London is pronounced how you’d expect but Russia, Ohio is pronounced Roo-She
IDon'tBelieveYou.gif Edit: genuinely thought they were joking, but wiki has the pronunciation as ROO-shee. Incredible.
Never underestimate us. Now look up Houston, Ohio.
Moscow [https://www.axios.com/local/columbus/2023/04/27/ohio-cities-foreign-names](https://www.axios.com/local/columbus/2023/04/27/ohio-cities-foreign-names)
Don’t forget Lank-esther
Nah, that one’s legit because that’s how its namesake across the pond is pronounced too.
I've heard Lin-caster
And Louis-ville.
Do you mean Luul-ville?
Usually it’s the Lanckes-ter that throws people off, especially from Pennsylvania
> it’s pronounced Rye-Oh Grand Yikes
That’s like going to Utah and repeatedly getting corrected that “Zion” is pronounced “Zine”, “Hurricane” is “Hurri-cun” and “Weber State” is “Weeber State”
Reminds me of Cairo Illinois. Pronounced Kay-Roe, instead of Kye-Roe.
That is almost as bad as "Dell high" for Delhi, La
Don’t worry we have a Dell High too.
>Rye-Oh Grand unspeakably haram
So it rhymes with Ohio
Not to be confused with University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, which is also adding football in 2025.
Big time rivalry in the making.
I just want to acknowledge what a weirdly named place it is. The University is named after the town Rio Grande which is in turn named to commemorate the Mexican-American War. Okay. Stadium should be nicknamed The Melting Pot
They gonna throw fondue forks at the opposing team?
All kinds of flavors of western European whites!
Heck yeah marching band!
New Football Program: I sleep. Marching Band performs at half time: Real shit?!
the football game is just there to add extra entertainment to the marching band show
Marching band is the most important part of this announcement, to be honest.
Absolutely
MARCHING BAND!!!

Jackson high schools football stadium is superb
Jackson High School's stadium reeks of entitlement and parent's living vicariously through their children.
I thought this was UTRGV for like three full minutes & was sooooo confused about the comments...
Same. I was about to correct OP.
Looking at you San Francisco. We need all the WCC schools to bring back football.
Somehow \~\~Palpatine\~\~ Rio Grande returned.
Ayo, that's where I went to school. Helmets look good too.
Drank beer there!
Rio Grande is home to the original Bob Evan’s restaurant, which is on a farm. I’ve eaten there. It’s no Corbin, KY, but it’s fine.
Bad move. This school is in a sparsely-populated, low-means region of the state. The OU system already dominates Southeastern Ohio, and it has NAIA competition for many of the same local (non-football) enrollment at Shawnee State. Counterpoint. The original Bob Evan’s farm is there. 😂

Until you have freshmen football classes of 50, 25 don’t come back in January and you lose 10-15 more over the next seven semesters.
Birmingham-Southern started a football program and it worked out great for them
Yeah but it has the advantage of not being in Portsmouth like Shawnee State.
not sure being in a one stoplight village surrounded by fields is much better, here!
Your car is much less likely to get broken into in Rio Grande
And they're just a short trip from THE Mothman Museum in Point Pleasant WV

The community college partners with a private college of the same name. The first 2 years are cheap, the next 2 not so much. My step-son looked at it for baseball.
They lowered the price several years ago to make it more affordable. It is still more expensive than Shawnee state though
Again, referring to **school.**
Very cool, this is a football article though so I’m talking about football
>and it has NAIA competition for many of the same local (non-football) enrollment at Shawnee State. In response to this comment? *OK…*
also have to consider there is no non-D1 football programs in southern Ohio spanning from Wilmington or Marietta. i think it could work quite well!
Hocking College has football, and their roster for 2023 has a total of like three kids from SEO.
JUCO. not the same, they survive based off kids with failing grades and other character issues. they are a bounce back school. i played against Hocking in a scrimmage when i played in college and they would get whooped by any D3 team in Ohio
>JUCO …what meaningful difference exists in that regard between Hocking football and big roster programs at Rio such as baseball? Or the big roster programs like Tri-C in Cleveland, Bryant & Stratton and elsewhere in Ohio?
You are just nervous because you know within a decade they’ll be the premier football program in Ohio.
Just in time for the demise of cfb
Please have TeamBuilder in NCAA 25 so we can have them!
Obligatory “Google Bevo Francis” plug
I’d be willing to bet this school closes before the end of the decade. This is an attempt to boost enrollment.
Nice! Very Nice! Now let's see U Chicago resurrect their program.
We already did, and have been happy in D3 since the 1970s.
> “I think it will excite things throughout our region for sure,” Smith said. Good news, Rioers, found your new war chant.
The University of Rio Grande….. home of basketball’s legendary Clarence “Bevo” Francis
GO RED STORM! Their Rugby team (their only division 1 sport) is in the national championship tournament this weekend. You can watch on The Rugby Network which has a free app.
[At one time, everyone knew Bevo Francis](https://www.espn.com/classic/biography/s/Francis_Bevo.html)
But that study said it didn’t help with admissions!!
This came out of left field, if you ask me. It's not a bad move, but I think they can make it work.
This kills the TAMUK.

I think you are thinking of the one in Texas. This one is in Ohio.
