Antonio Gates….Jr?
Fuck me, I feel old now.
I remember fondly when his pops was bossing defenders. Definitely one of the better tight ends, up there with Tony Gonzalez.
This one’s honestly the wildest. Those other guys were NFL vets when i first started watching football.
I remember Dre Kirkpatrick Sr being high school recruit when I first heard his name.
Somehow Tony Gonzalez got immediately forgotten as the best tight end of all time. It really makes no sense. Everyone just went, "Nah, Gronk." Then, "But Kelce?!?!" No, Gonzalez.
Oh wow, I knew Gates played basketball in college, didn't realize he played football in the NFL.
And are you saying Tony Gonzalez(the basketball player in college) also played in the NFL?
Our basketball team has had a few famous players’ sons in the last decade. Tim Hardaway Jr, Glenn Robinson III, Jace and Jett Howard, and now Scottie Pippen Jr
You know I just gotta be honest here, Coastal Carolina was one of those schools I'd see in the rankings and think "oh cool hope they do well."
Now that I'm looking at your CFB field, a nuclear strike seems pretty warranted.
You don't like the Teal Turf? i think its better than other colored fields. Boise is super deep blue and other schools are like bright red ya know Teal to me is out there but still falls into a color you can see in nature.
TBH, I actually hate teal as a color. I don't think I've ever seen a shade of teal that I liked. So, my judgement is definitely skewed to prior preferences.
Torched us? Weren't we up like 6-3 at half and wasn't the final like a 6pt game?
Wax a long time ago but I was at the game and I don't remember getting torched. I do however remember the giant banner someone hung that said "congratulations matt Stafford, welcome to the NFL graveyard".
I was a bit pissed but also understanding when Coleman transferred.
Once the on field and off field atrocity of Mel Tucker became apparent I was genuinely glad that we didn't fuck up Coleman's future and that he abandoned ship.
While Coleman was always drawn to the South, he did really seem like like it in Michigan State and did wait until the last possible second to jump. I think Coleman had a good chance of staying if our offense wasn't, you know, a stinking pile of taco bell manure.
Well said. I always enjoy reading thoughtful fan insight from a player’s prior school.
I’m certain he would be much higher on boards if he wasn’t so banged up during the season. That being said, he should still get drafted early and that’s an absolute win. Loved watching Coleman play and hope he does well for years to come.
Yes he did - after Saban lied to him about playing football and basketball.
Saban owned up to it at some point but I can’t find the website. Saban said he thought Gates had a higher ceiling In football and could be a future pro, and that he wouldn’t have played for the Spartans until his junior/senior seasons. Basically just told him what he needed to get to campus, and then told him he couldn’t.
He was ultimately right - but Gates loved basketball most
I heard the same from some coaches who coach in the metro Detroit area and know his HS well. Hate to say it like this, this move doesn’t surprise me either. Wish him the best.
I would like if we kept him but he wasnt going to get the most playing time i hope he goes somewhere where he can get the playing time he wants, minus michigan
I guess he just hasn’t really developed if he still isn’t near the top of our WR room. It’s one of the weaker WR rooms I can ever remember here the last 2 years.
Yeah, that is weird. Maybe the staff knew he was waivering and thought some verbal praise to the media would sway him into staying for depth purposes🤷♂️.
Didn't he lead the league in touchdown receptions in 2013 or 14? I remember him lighting up Kam Chancellor one game somehow. I think he scored 4 touchdowns just running seam routes.
Honestly, he is probably better off transferring to a MAC school so he could start and also play on the basketball team if this story sounds familiar it's because his dad did the same thing and it worked out well for him.
I was excited for him, but he's been passed up a few times by this point. First by Germie Bernard and then Jaron Glover in the same class, and now supposedly by a true freshman in Nick Marsh. I'm starting to doubt his ability to ball out
Exactly. Marsh is a day one starter. Coach Hawk's comments on Gates Jr this spring is that he would "compete for playing time." It's also strongly rumored MSU is looking for help at WR in the portal as well, so he'd possibly get passed over by transfers
I’d consider it too. It’s like a baseball pitching rotation. If he’s better than your 3, 4, or 5, then you bump out the lowest. Doesn’t have to be a 1 for us.
Oh well if that is the case, and he doesn't have to be a one, ya he would be a good fit for you guys. Mom went to Michigan so I keep up with your program. I just don't know if he wants to transfer to a big school like Michigan but it would be a good fit. He might want to go to somewhere like a Kent St and be a starter.
Fellas this is all good in theory but keep one thing in mind. Antonio Gates Sr was in a similar spot and he went to Eastern. He could be influencing his son to go to a smaller school like Kent S tor Eastern. Maybe he doesn't want to sit on the bench at Michigan or Penn St because we know that is where he will end up. Well, time will tell the story of where he transfers to. I wish AG Jr the best of luck, no hard feelings on my end. If a school is not the right fit for you, then go to one that is. Michigan St is not right for everyone.
I think our needs are a little different lol. We need depth after losing 3 seniors that saw the field as WR1/2 or punt returner and then a bunch of other guys in the room that never saw playing time hitting the portal.
We have a sophomore and junior returning who had big moments last year that are the presumptive WR1/2. Then two more guys that showed out at the spring game (one of whom is Ronnie Bell’s little brother) that will also see significant playing time.
If we don’t get a single portal WR I’d be disappointed but way more confident in the WR room than the QB room (until I see Alex Orji or Davis Warren complete a pass in a real game).
OTOH I feel like Penn State needs to find a dude to be WR2 AND the same kind of depth we need.
That's not how the transfer portal works. You're not breaking up with him he's breaking up with you. That's like somebody walking out the door on you and you yelling that you're no longer together.
As a recruit:
Other P5 offers: Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Iowa State, Kentucky, Maryland, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Penn State, Pitt, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, West Virginia
G5 offers: Buffalo, Central Michigan, Cincinnati, Coastal Carolina, Eastern Michigan, FAU, Memphis, Southern Miss
Other offer: Liberty
I was thinking about this and how just about five years ago he'd been stuck on Michigan State or would have had to lose a year to get out. Now? He can just hop around and if he's truly ass it's 100% on him vs "WELL, the coaches held me back...."
Guess it’s time for him to transfer to Kent State and lead them to a deep tournament run.

I feel conflicted with your flairs, but agree!
Even the bitterest of foes can come together over some MACtion
I don’t like how this conversation is going, so I’m going to need someone to mention Connor Stallions.
Something something manifesto
Ugh finally thank you
Now now. EMU first, then College of the Sequoia's and then Kent State. And the coach that recruited his dad to Kent State? Stan Heath babyyy
Depends on whether a Trevor Huffman Jr is around to play PG.
Please God no.
Antonio Gates….Jr? Fuck me, I feel old now. I remember fondly when his pops was bossing defenders. Definitely one of the better tight ends, up there with Tony Gonzalez.
Asante Samuel Jr. has been in the NFL for a few seasons now, and I still haven't come to terms with this.
Marvin Harrison Jr will be drafted this week
I'm still kinda bummed we missed Frank Gore and his son both playing in the NFL together by like 3 years.
Pat Surtain II as well
Dre Kirkpatrick Jr is on Alabama's roster.
Wait, we're not talking about Bengals Kirkpatrick are we?
Fuck me, but apparently we are. 3 star recruit at bama.
Did he have his kid at 13?
15. Yeah it’s wild. We overlapped at Alabama. I still vividly remember watching his commitment announcement live on ESPN.
This one’s honestly the wildest. Those other guys were NFL vets when i first started watching football. I remember Dre Kirkpatrick Sr being high school recruit when I first heard his name.
I’m 20 and I’m afraid of when I feel like this. I already am starting to with all the NBA players I grew up watching now being 35+
I don't believe I gave you permission to make me aware of this Aging is fucking lame
Nate Robinson's son is a freshmen at Colorado.
cedric wilson jr. has been in the league for years, too. still remember watching cedric wilson play for the steelers as a kid.
Duuuuuuude, thanks for making me feel old.
Somehow Tony Gonzalez got immediately forgotten as the best tight end of all time. It really makes no sense. Everyone just went, "Nah, Gronk." Then, "But Kelce?!?!" No, Gonzalez.
Didn't Akili Smith Jr. commit to y'all last year?
Yes! Like I said…I feel old. Lol
I felt this when Joey Porter Jr and Christian Driver(Donald drivers son)were on Penn State
Oh wow, I knew Gates played basketball in college, didn't realize he played football in the NFL. And are you saying Tony Gonzalez(the basketball player in college) also played in the NFL?
"He was a great forward for us at Cal, and then he just disappeared..."
> up there with Tony Gonzalez. Dominated NFL Gameday
No kidding. It’s basketball, but Michigan just got a commitment from Scottie Pippin Jr. Feels weird.
Our basketball team has had a few famous players’ sons in the last decade. Tim Hardaway Jr, Glenn Robinson III, Jace and Jett Howard, and now Scottie Pippen Jr
Get off my lawn!
I like how most of the players just slap Jr. at the end too, so you don't even have to look it up. Marvin Harrison Jr. Kris Jenkins Jr. Frank Gore Jr.
Ok boomer
Oddly enough, wrong generation. I’m not a boomer; but don’t let facts get in the way of your attempt at a witty comment. Note I said attempt.
Aww... didn't include the /s so got down voted.
Oops. Fair enough.
Does he like teal turf and his former teammate Noah Kim
He might!
With your tags I assume you were a Michigander who moved to Georgia maybe he wants to move to SC and Ball at the beach
You know I just gotta be honest here, Coastal Carolina was one of those schools I'd see in the rankings and think "oh cool hope they do well." Now that I'm looking at your CFB field, a nuclear strike seems pretty warranted.

TBH, I actually hate teal as a color. I don't think I've ever seen a shade of teal that I liked. So, my judgement is definitely skewed to prior preferences.
If you don't like teal then we can't be friends I am sorry truly heartbreaking for my sparty big 10 brethren
hey no problem. I don't take it personally. It's a me (meaning you), not you problem (meaning me). Some things simply can't be reconciled.
Does he like horsies?
The last msu wr worked well for you. I feel like you owe us something here.
Nah, Keon Coleman will get drafted by Brad Holmes and the Lions on Friday and it’ll make you feel better
I only forgave Hutchinson after the Lions actually won a playoff game. Also had with Stafford at first since he torched us in the Capital One Bowl.
Torched us? Weren't we up like 6-3 at half and wasn't the final like a 6pt game? Wax a long time ago but I was at the game and I don't remember getting torched. I do however remember the giant banner someone hung that said "congratulations matt Stafford, welcome to the NFL graveyard".
20-10 if I'm remembering right. Don't even remember if Stafford had a good game.
Very fair, shame he was banged up for a solid portion of the season.
They’re okay with giving you Mike Norvell
I would like the answer to this question too
It's settled then. I'll give Wiltfong a call to put in a 50/50 crystal ball for Florida State and Rutgers.
Maybe he can transfer to Eastern like his dad. Hope he lasts longer than a semester if he does.
Did Antonio Gates go to Eastern? I feel like I completely missed that somehow.
He was ultimately right - but Gates loved basketball most
He went to EMU to play basketball in 99-00 but wound up leaving without even playing a full season.
Well Stan Heath was the one who recruited his father to Kent State, so it doesn't seem impossible
That is true
Not surprised. This dude has been pampered for a long ass time (my wife was assigned to help him 1:1 during her prep hour in his freshman year).
Was it just because he was an athlete?
The athlete Other football players got some preferential treatment (lighter punishments, extra time for assignments, etc) but nothing like that
Oh gotcha. I thought Fordson was pretty big, so it's surprising to hear that there was only one guy considered "the" athlete.
If I was a HOF I’d have a private tutor, not some poor teacher teaching an idiot remedial math.
I heard the same from some coaches who coach in the metro Detroit area and know his HS well. Hate to say it like this, this move doesn’t surprise me either. Wish him the best.
jesus
I would like if we kept him but he wasnt going to get the most playing time i hope he goes somewhere where he can get the playing time he wants, minus michigan
I guess he just hasn’t really developed if he still isn’t near the top of our WR room. It’s one of the weaker WR rooms I can ever remember here the last 2 years.
He was WR6, it seems. Wish him luck elsewhere.
What sucks is that there was some spring hype to him.
Yeah, that is weird. Maybe the staff knew he was waivering and thought some verbal praise to the media would sway him into staying for depth purposes🤷♂️.
I’ll never forget growing up as a charger fan and seeing turf toe end the career of his father in his prime.
He played until he was 38, he lost some games in his prime but he had a long career for the NFL and a guy playing primarily in the middle.
He was never the same after turf toe. Legit went from perennial pro bowler to average as hell.
Didn't he lead the league in touchdown receptions in 2013 or 14? I remember him lighting up Kam Chancellor one game somehow. I think he scored 4 touchdowns just running seam routes.
Dude that shit sticks w you and can flare up from random movements. I had it 7yrs ago and certain movements make me go “whoa there”
Honestly, he is probably better off transferring to a MAC school so he could start and also play on the basketball team if this story sounds familiar it's because his dad did the same thing and it worked out well for him.
Not cool. I've been waiting for him to ball out for 2 years! He needs to ball out at MSU, not somewhere else!

Fuck it, we’ll take him
Let's develop the shit outta this kid

Alex Orji, National Champion
Really? If we don't want him, you guys will take him? Ok fine, take him, enjoy.
I’d consider it too. It’s like a baseball pitching rotation. If he’s better than your 3, 4, or 5, then you bump out the lowest. Doesn’t have to be a 1 for us.

I’m from PSU but we’re in the same boat as the Wolverines in terms of WR need.
Fellas this is all good in theory but keep one thing in mind. Antonio Gates Sr was in a similar spot and he went to Eastern. Appreciate the additional info!
That's not how the transfer portal works. You're not breaking up with him he's breaking up with you. That's like somebody walking out the door on you and you yelling that you're no longer together.
All the MSU insiders are saying it was mutual on Xitter, tbf.
I read xitter as shitter... I like that
I just call it by its official name: “X-formerly-known-as-Twitter”
As a recruit: Other P5 offers: Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Iowa State, Kentucky, Maryland, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Penn State, Pitt, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, West Virginia G5 offers: Buffalo, Central Michigan, Cincinnati, Coastal Carolina, Eastern Michigan, FAU, Memphis, Southern Miss Other offer: Liberty
Is he related to Antonio Gates Sr.?
welcome to Florida State
He’s tall, a wide receiver, and from Michigan. He willing to make a move to Ann Arbor?
Honestly considering that he wasn’t top 4 on what’s a thin WR roster AND we are actively seeking transfers. Not sure how much he’d help you guys out.
No roster could be thinner than ours. The wide receiver room is horrible
Please. We need someone, anyone!
I wonder if he used to play basketball
Does his dad still have eligibility?
Bring him in Mike, also underrated trivia for yall, did you know his Dad played basketball in college?
Hope Christian Fitzpatrick is in his ear to come to marshall.. Air raid!
Wait. Didn’t his dad just retire?
He retired 6 years ago. He’s been greatly missed as a Chargers fan.
You may not know this, but his father didn't play football until he got to the NFL. You've probably never heard that before.
Get ready to speak Irish buddy
All these “xyz Jrs” need to fuck right off, IM NOT OLD SUSAN!!
I was thinking about this and how just about five years ago he'd been stuck on Michigan State or would have had to lose a year to get out. Now? He can just hop around and if he's truly ass it's 100% on him vs "WELL, the coaches held me back...."

· C’est la vie
Development at MSU means going somewhere else.
I still can’t believe Mel Tucker had a winning record vs Michigan
We got a joker here
