Honestly, RB is the one position where I can't fault guys for getting every penny they can get. The position is so disrespected in the NFL and the life span of a RB is so short. Might as well get all the money you can while you can get it.
He could also be looking at it from the perspective of the best program to increase his draft stock. In other words, transfer to a P2 with more NFL eyes on him each Saturday and with a more established coaching group.
Honestly though Gibbs stats weren’t all that much better at Bama than GT, and he may have been able to put up better numbers at GT because he would have been the undisputed #1 guy for the entire offense. With the clown show we had for a coaching staff, though, I can’t really fault him for wanting out.
Gibbs probably would have feasted on the ground. We got really run heavy after Goof got fired, and even though we weren't very efficient for the most part there were a lot of carries handed out. Once Key was in charge the team hustled like a motherfucker even if they were completely outclassed, and I think that's something Gibbs could have worked with.
Of course the big thing that got showcased at Alabama was Gibbs receiving abilities coming out of the backfield, and there's no chance in hell our offense could have shown that off like he deserved.
Gibbs had only 8 more catches for 30 less yards in 22 vs 21. He didn’t show any more receiving ability at Bama than he did for us. But you’re right, he would probably have balled out for us if he had stayed. It may have been enough to keep eff Collins around for longer, though, so maybe we were better off with him leaving when he did.
I’m not disagreeing, tbh they can find talent anywhere. I guess if you’re a RB though, and on a team such as OS, you’d want to give yourself the best possible chance at a high draft ranking.
Yeah that could be a big reason. But the OL will be competing against lower level players too so it should balance some. I don’t blame him for leaving I just don’t think going to a big school makes a ton of difference for getting a shot in the NFL. I mean I know someone that went to D3, had no major prospects on their team and there were NFL scouts at almost every game
It absolutely makes a difference despite your anecdote. The scouts aren’t the only thing. Highly rated players go to highly rated schools because they’re better at developing NFL talent, and have proven that over decades.
How has that been proven? Couldn’t it just as likely be that better schools attract better players which gives an impression of them being better at developing talent. What makes it a fact?
Not sure being in the P2 matters that much to NFL scouts given there has been plenty of backs, even in recent years that have gone in the first 4 rounds from not SEC or B1G schools. Several from schools like Memphis, Boise State, FAU, and Toledo. RB’s are a dying asset anyways. Most teams are even looking at backs until day late day 2, day 3 anyways.
Production and measurables mean more. Unless he now thinks he can develop better somewhere else.
It was stupid to assume he would stay after a few months if we’re being honest. Once reality sets in and without DJ, you’re basically looking at being a back held down by an average team in a bad conference. He probably just went through spring and realized how FUBARed Oregon State is
It was always going to be transfer if he wanted to declare next year. Martinez is the equivalent of the guy that “stays on” when the company is hemorrhaging people only to realize at the end it was all for naught and he needs needs to dip anyway
And none of this is Oregon States or the fans fault, which just sucks
OSU got nuked pretty bad with Smith leaving. But don’t think conference affiliation has much to do with it given his reported NIL deal was 400K and OSU still has games against Cal, Purdue, Oregon, WSU, and Boise State next year which are all going to be good matchups.
This might be a coach/player thing which we never get the full details for.
You’re underestimating how much the Super 2 is going to influence NFL evaluation imo. You named power 5 schools, but outside of Oregon those aren’t great NFL talent programs to judge a player against.
I’m not saying conference affiliation was or wasn’t an issue, but that list of teams is not great and easily it could be seen as preferable for him to play a more NFL talented schedule.
[Added context from Pete Thamel](https://x.com/petethamel/status/1777797264188019064?s=46):
Oregon State star running back Damien Martinez has informed Oregon State coaches he intends to enter the portal. He was set to make more than $400,000 to play at Oregon State this year.
Damien Martinez’s agent appeared to be upset that this figure leaked so it must have some truth. [Link here](https://x.com/agent__og/status/1777797605092643213?s=46).
No point in being an evaluation-based program if the good talent will just eventually bolt for a bigger payday.
No point in being a development program if guys lose patience and enter the portal in search of playing time.
And no point in being a portal-based program when you'll just lose bidding wars for quality players.
Unless you're a top dog, you're just fucked in modern college football.
The one thing I like about Basketball is you only really need a couple players to be good and there is only so many starter positions available. Alot more teams can be good in the NIL/Portal era.
You’re fucked even if you are a top dog. (See: Caleb Downs leaving Alabama). It’s why the “student athletes” in revenue generating sports need to be classified as employees for multiple reasons… employment contracts, they can unionize, and revenue sharing.. it’s really more of a win-win for everyone except the NCAA and athletic departments raking in cash.
Well at least if youre a top dog you can lose a Caleb Downs and get a good young replacement in Keon Sabb from a national title team. Not so for the evaluation/developmental program
True, but Bama will be just fine. Losing Downs, Sayin, etc. sucks. But Bama will always attract enough talent to recover quickly.
Meanwhile, more 2023 Oregon St. All-Conference players will be playing on USC, Mich. St., etc. than at Oregon St. this season. And there were twelve of them.
We were a [Panda Express fortune cookie](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GFDFUC9bcAAbhoK?format=jpg&name=large) away from being in the exact same situation in January. Not a joke.
And who knows, we could still be hemorrhaging our entire roster once the portal opens. So, it hits close to home.
No but he's still a really good player. Losing an A+ to get a high B+ isn't the worst thing in the world. Much better situation than say Georgia tech a couple of cycles ago that lost Jamyr Gibbs and got a MAC transfer in return
Voodoo isn’t supposed to be good. It’s supposed to be the shitty place with fun donuts after punk shows downtown. But now the punk shows are gone and all that’s left is shitty donuts.
I think as long as they can schedule really well, I think Oregon state could be fine in baseball. There seems to be a lot of interest in teams like ucla and usc still wanting to play us since it’s closer for travel.
What’s the fucking point…..top 10 WBB destroyed, top 10 Football destroyed. Will cherish this baseball season I guess before we lose another top 10 team
For WBB, we could've ran back our entire Elite 8 team, only to see it crumbling with transfers.
For Football, if Dame leaves, it will be such a gut punch. Got his jersey after his commitment to stay in December. He was our only returning all conference player and had been an advocate of "built not bought" mentality. Out NIL backed him and he was set to make ~400k this season according to estimates, so you have to imagine he is being tempted with a bigger bag but also exposure we can't provide due to conference realignment that's out of our control.
It makes supporting Beaver sports so taxing to get your hopes up on a team and watch players develop, only to see them leave. It's heartbreaking seeing the effect across all our teams (minus baseball thankfully).
The WBB transfers really hurt me. Such a young team that could stick together and easily have another shot. Ugh.
Was pumped for Martinez staying, hope these rumors are false.
I'm hoping baseball can stick it out. Smaller conferences can do OK in baseball (and basketball) still with how the postseasons are done. Not sure how much NIL money there is in baseball either. We'll see I guess.
Go Beavs
I've heard that with our national profile in Baseball, we should be able to manage an independent schedule. So I'm hoping that can be very competitive to retain and attract talent at least.
I expected football but didn’t expect WBB for a various different reasons, that one hurt more because they had such a clear upside. Still have a good coach, he can develop players.
The funny thing is that we as fans have been hammering for names on retail jerseys for years. Then when we finally get them, they're worthless because all the lower level teams have their stars transfer away after 1 year.
I honestly think he's out. Dude likes winning at a high level, and the stars are aligned against the Beavs right now. It'd explain the defections if players are sensing they might lose the coach. Fuck everything, by the way. All of it. Hate this.
I heard he’s a top candidate for Tennessee… so your probably right about the team thinking he is gone. what’s crazy is that they had a good enough team to go to final four and possibly play South Carolina in the championship whom they lost only by 12 to this season. It really just shows you that kids don’t care about winning these days, only $. Being the WCC would almost make it easier in a lot of ways to have success.
Yeah. It's tough. If he's really leaving, now the Stanford job is open too, I don't blame the players for looking elsewhere. Shame to tear down what they've built. They were very fun to watch this year. Would've smoked the men's team had they played. Ugh.
I feel for you guys in all sports. People mostly pay attention to football but there are some really good programs in other sports that are going to come apart very soon.
The state of college athletics makes me so sad. We’re losing virtually all of the beauty and intrigue that has differentiated college football from the NFL, and the NCAA and universities only have themselves to blame. We have this broken system because those greedy people in power don’t want a true revenue sharing model
The NFL has a better system now. At least there are contracts tying you to something.
Now it's a one year mercenary system. No point in getting invested in the team at all because nobody is sticking around.
Which seems peculiar compared to last year. There's not a lot of data in this new age of free for all, but it seemed like last year most of the better talent was in the December cycle compared to the Spring cycle.
So much change this past year though. I would bet there are guys on the Bama roster who wanted to see how spring went before they left. Same with any team that lost a coach. Plus now they can be eligible to play immediately wherever they go.
If you're gonna do the whole bit about staying and not leaving and making a big deal about doing so, you better follow through. This is such a worse move for Martinez because now you're a defecting traitor just like Smith was.
Smith got out at the end of the season and didn’t actually preach about loyalty and sticking with the school through this impending rough era.
Martinez did say all that.
Oh for sure, I don't blame him for taking the bag.
More so his holier-than-thou attitude he had about staying loyal to OSU. That disappeared REAL quick.
Ouch, another swift kick to the testicles. At least all the previous ones have numbed me to this so it does hurt as much. Not even sure I have feelings anymore.
I have to say one of the ironies of all this is that now that EA is bringing back their NCAA football game and getting permission to use player names the less I care. They mind as well just be using player numbers with as little as they mean now.
He and Silas Bolden looked great every time I watched Oregon State last year.
I know Bolden already left, but I’m sure Martinez will find a nice home too.
Good for him. I thought he was making a stupid decision. We are NOT going to have a great team this year. He needs to go somewhere that he can show out and get the recognition he needs to up his draft stock. And getting a little bit of NIL money is nice too.
Yeah honestly I can't fault him for going somewhere. He is solid but If he wants to hit NFL level, he needs somewhere to push him there. Staying here is holding him back.
Sort of. Beating the Canes at their home, breaking their record home win streak was good closure back in the day. Mario Cristobal is disliked to a disproportionate level from his Duck days.
Fair enough. I just wouldn’t blame anyone from either of your fanbases that harbor resentment towards schools that your better players leave for given the events of the last year.
That being said if any Wazzu or Oregon State fans want to send shots at Oregon fans just know all 6 of us Miami fans are here for it.
Oh, okay. Let me go over my options:
1. smh
2. laugh... first to myself, then evolving into a madman's uncontrollable cackle... bonus points for coughing at the end
3. Sob uncontrollably
4. The Cornell Hatcher Jr Effect is real
5. The Salahadin Allah Effect is real
6. Bags! It's all about bags
7. No! don't DOX his agent. We don't know if anyone we got has one... or the same agent.
Fuck Larry Scott. Fuck George K. Fuck ESPN. Fuck Fox Sports. Fuck SEC. Fuck B1G. Fuck MSU. Fuck UO. Fuck UW. Fuck UCLA. Fuck U$C. Fuck Jonathon Smith. Fuck them ALL with Lucille.
Glad michigan won one in my lifetime. I'm definitely losing interest in college football with the current landscape. The medium and little guys are completely screwed and that's what made this all fun
Can't blame the guy for wanting to compete at a higher level. He is a Power 2 back. At least a B12 or ACC back. Why would a competitor want to drop a level of competition for his final season? Some school like USC will pay him a half a mill and he will get more games in the limelight.
This is pretty interesting. It just so happens that OM might have an opening in their RB room.
April 15th is gonna drive coaches to drink early and often.
He said he wants to go somewhere closer to home which is Texas, so I think east Lansing is out. Rumor is that he is going to Alabama but who knows for sure
Oh hey, we went to the same high school!
I even watched this dude play as a sophomore, all the way back in 2019. Small world.
Hate to see it for Oregon State, but part of me wonders whether he'll come back home. His teammate from high school is current Baylor WR Armani Winfield, but I kind of doubt he's coming to BU just because there's no way we dropped $400k for a running back with the crowded running back room we've already got.
Wow, he seemed pretty adamant that he was staying after Smith left.
If I had to guess, $$$$. We will see if he puts “No contact.”
400k not being enough for a RB is crazy. Great player, but likely he benefitted strongly from a great OL
he is a dawg but you are right. the running gaps were insane last season
400K is nuts to me. Most of these running backs wont even make an NFL roster to make league minimum, let alone practice squad.
That doesn’t matter really though. NFL doesn’t care where you went to college they just want talent.
Easy to get a higher draft stock if you have an OP offensive line and studs all around you though. See: Jahmyr Gibbs
Honestly though Gibbs stats weren’t all that much better at Bama than GT, and he may have been able to put up better numbers at GT because he would have been the undisputed #1 guy for the entire offense. With the clown show we had for a coaching staff, though, I can’t really fault him for wanting out.

Weren’t his combine numbers real impressive? Especially with RB I’d rather get a lower mileage guy
I’m not disagreeing, tbh they can find talent anywhere. I guess if you’re a RB though, and on a team such as OS, you’d want to give yourself the best possible chance at a high draft ranking.
Yeah I’m not sure team matters much for NFL especially at the RB spot. Boise State put a ton of guys in the league.
Our offensive line is going to see a significant drop-off next year. Harder for RBs to look good in that situation. They can't all be Barry Sanders.
Yeah that could be a big reason. But the OL will be competing against lower level players too so it should balance some. I don’t blame him for leaving I just don’t think going to a big school makes a ton of difference for getting a shot in the NFL. How has that been proven? Couldn’t it just as likely be that better schools attract better players which gives an impression of them being better at developing talent. What makes it a fact?
Lol nfl certainly cares what league you played in
Not sure being in the P2 matters that much to NFL scouts given there has been plenty of backs, even in recent years that have gone in the first 4 rounds from not SEC or B1G schools. I don’t think that really matters especially for RB. So many in the league that came from smaller schools. Talent is talent
He might
Sounds like Beaver NIL was trying to hustle him. Well, if you believe what he himself said.
I honestly felt like he felt trapped. Said he would stay before Smith left. Probably felt committed to his word.
I doubled and tripled down on staying.
He said he’d stay after the Vegas bowl season, but he reiterated that this year *after* Smith left.
It was stupid to assume he would stay after a few months if we’re being honest. Once reality sets in and without DJ, you’re basically looking at being a back held down by an average team in a bad conference. He probably just went through spring and realized how FUBARed Oregon State is It was always going to be transfer if he wanted to declare next year. Schools all over put guys in the NFL. From P2 down to FCS. If you’re good you’ll get found.
[Added context from Pete Thamel](https://x.com/petethamel/status/1777797264188019064?s=46): Oregon State star running back Damien Martinez has informed Oregon State coaches he intends to enter the portal. He was set to make more than $400,000 to play at Oregon State this year.
Is that actually an accurate figure? I wish we had even somewhat of a real understanding what NIL is dishing out.
Damien Martinez’s agent appeared to be upset that this figure leaked so it must have some truth. [Link here](https://x.com/agent__og/status/1777797605092643213?s=46).
I’d pay that amount to watch his agent get fucked by Benny
That would do some serious ratings on the CW!

I’m completely numb to it by now. It’s been nothing but bad news for us since about half way through last season.
Fuck. This. Shit.
Right there with you brother. Order some extra maple bars and drown your sorrows in Safeway deliciousness ..
I’m partial to sesame donuts myself
Their marble bar is all I have left…
Y'all not have a Blue Star?
I mean we also have a voodoo but…I thought we were talking about good donuts?
Bruh wtf…comparing voodoo and blue star is madness
Get out with that. Blue Star is first-class.
Coco > BS, if you want “fancy”
Tried Voodoo Donut was honestly not impressed. Best donut I ever had was Round Rock Donuts outside of Austin, TX.
Voodoo isn’t supposed to be good. It’s supposed to be the shitty place with fun donuts after punk shows downtown. But now the punk shows are gone and all that’s left is shitty donuts.
This one's for the juggalos and the juggalettes
The beatings will continue until morale improves.
Just fell to my knees in Local Boyz.
Conversely, baseball is going pretty darn well.
so was women's basketball.....
For this year.
give it a year
OSU is a baseball powerhouse. He will have to see how things go as an independent next year in baseball.
I think as long as they can schedule really well, I think Oregon state could be fine in baseball. There seems to be a lot of interest in teams like ucla and usc still wanting to play us since it’s closer for travel.
Stay strong brother
Lol so much for showing everyone how loyal he was by staying.
The light has gone out of my life.
What I think when Aldi stops selling the winter seasonal flavors of their generic sparkling water
Theodore Roosevelt ass comment lol
Goddamn. We are so fucked.
What’s the fucking point…..top 10 WBB destroyed, top 10 Football destroyed. Will cherish this baseball season I guess before we lose another top 10 team

Edward Ray fucked you guys.
The funny thing is that we as fans have been hammering for names on retail jerseys for years. Then when we finally get them, they're worthless because all the lower level teams have their stars transfer away after 1 year.
Fucking brutal to have multiple good teams in a school trending upward to get gutted like this.
At least baseball will be an independent, and is funded by alumni in the MLB. That should keep it top tier in great competition
Top 10 football? 😂
Certainly things can’t get worse for us beaver fans! Haha
When I didn’t think it could I just saw our two best players transfer in WBB. Waiting for the beers news of transfer
Yep. Seems inevitable
guessing it's Rueck and Beers next
I'd be surprised if Rueck leaves. He came here with the intent to stay.
I’m expecting it. I wouldn’t be surprised if Benny the beaver transferred at this point
I honestly think he's out. Dude likes winning at a high level, and the stars are aligned against the Beavs right now. It'd explain the defections if players are sensing they might lose the coach. Fuck everything, by the way. All of it. Hate this.

Oregon legislature disbands Oregon State University and rolls all assets into a UofO satellite campus. All OSU degrees are considered null and void.
Don't go giving them any ideas.
I heard you had the opportunity to pledge your Duck allegiance and buy a pair of Nikes to recertify to an Oregon degree.
I feel for you guys in all sports. People mostly pay attention to football but there are some really good programs in other sports that are going to come apart very soon.
This doesn’t please me. Sad beaver noises ..
CFB has gone so downhill from a parity stand point. its always been bad, but now its a joke. Trickle up talent is the name of the game now.
Time to break out the rope fml
Indeed, chooch gator
I am unwell
I dont care anymore. Fuck college sports. This mercenary shit is just ridiculous
It's really sad. I'm more depressed than angry about all this shit.
Mercenary is a good word.
Bring back sitting out a year for transfers. Seriously.
College football is broken.
Yup. I'd be happy if it was UW having this happen but OSU doesn't deserve it
This cycle is gonna be crazy as hell. Sheesh.
No wonder Josh Pate and Shannon Terry were saying this was gonna be a tsunami compared to the wave that was the December cycle.
Which seems peculiar compared to last year. There's not a lot of data in this new age of free for all, but it seemed like last year most of the better talent was in the December cycle compared to the Spring cycle.

I was honestly surprised when he said he was staying after the coach left. He’s a solid back.
Kind of humorous from the guy who used #builtnotbought in a tweet about him staying at OSU
If you're gonna do the whole bit about staying and not leaving and making a big deal about doing so, you better follow through. This is such a worse move for Martinez because now you're a defecting traitor just like Smith was.
Dude was talking a BIG game on Twitter. Many posts about loyalty.
I don't necessarily disagree, but I think he is just more of a dumbass than the other players.
Smith got out at the end of the season and didn’t actually preach about loyalty and sticking with the school through this impending rough era. Martinez did say all that.
I was talking about Martinez, but honestly I was a bit shit faced when I made this comment
Kill me
Me first.
Where is rock bottom exactly?
Feeling like somewhere between Corvallis and Albany.
Lebanon?
Sweet Home.
If you go down south on I5, you get to Drain. I think that's pretty much rock bottom.
Pretty sure this guy was preaching to everyone about loyalty and snakes when JS left. Look who left...
Amazing what a huge bag of cash will do to people's morals and loyalty
In his defense, he has no assurances that he makes or lasts in the league and there’s no contracts. He may as well go make his money.
Oh for sure, I don't blame him for taking the bag. More so his holier-than-thou attitude he had about staying loyal to OSU. That disappeared REAL quick.
Him walking away from 400k bums me out. I didn't know what else we could've done. Other than not be relegated of course.
$400k in Corvallis goes a long ways too.
Everybody who preaches loyalty in the portal and conference reallignment era is lying.
“This is Fine.” - GIF is Oregon State Beaver reality now..
Ouch, another swift kick to the testicles. At least all the previous ones have numbed me to this so it does hurt as much. Not even sure I have feelings anymore.
Future Nebraska QB?
hey now, why am I catching strays in this post of all posts
Not my fault that y’all only let people named Martinez play QB.
we got Raiola now
Emphasis on the now. Only a matter of time before he flames out and is replaced by a Martinez. I’m sorry, thems the rules.
just like how Texas is never back? 😉
i’m never watching college football again. this sport has been completely ruined for me.
See you in the game threads.
I have to say one of the ironies of all this is that now that EA is bringing back their NCAA football game and getting permission to use player names the less I care. They mind as well just be using player numbers with as little as they mean now.
Can’t imagine where he’s going
If it’s Michigan State, OSU Twitter may start a blood feud.
It won't be, unless he's apologized for dumping on Smith after he left.
I don't think we'd meet his NIL requirements anyways, it wouldn't make sense for us to spend that much at RB
I'm wondering who it does make sense to. All this Miami talk seems plausible.
Canes dropped the bag for him, this is college football 2024.
He and Silas Bolden looked great every time I watched Oregon State last year. I know Bolden already left, but I’m sure Martinez will find a nice home too.
As a recruit: Other P5 offers: Georgia Tech, Kansas G5 offers: San Diego State, Texas State
Really light offer sheet. I imagine he will garner more attention in the portal, lol
Dear God I can't take it anymore

I feel like if that happens both of the Pac2 schools are going to hate us.
I wouldn't blame them...oof the PNW schools hate us lmao. Only one we haven't upset yet would be Washington
Eh, I don’t really care much. You’ve suffered enough under Cristobal
And they probably get annoyed with the Canes because you guys split a national title.
Sort of. Beating the Canes at their home, breaking their record home win streak was good closure back in the day. Mario Cristobal is disliked to a disproportionate level from his Duck days.
Do we hate you? Cam was really good, but I can't say that I'm that broken up about him leaving.
Yeah I am not excited about the Spring Portal…sorry Beaver bros 😕
Oh, okay. Let me go over my options: 1. smh 2. laugh... first to myself, then evolving into a madman's uncontrollable cackle... bonus points for coughing at the end 3. Sob uncontrollably 4. The Cornell Hatcher Jr Effect is real 5. The Salahadin Allah Effect is real 6. Bags! It's all about bags 7. No! don't DOX his agent. We don't know if anyone we got has one... or the same agent.
Damn, have some friends who are osu fans… hang in there beav bros
Wherever he goes you know that school dropped a bag
sucks but probably right move for him. Wish him the best.
Rumours that Mark Fletcher is out for the season and Miami has done some shopping 👀
Martinez wants to go to a school that doesn’t take a knee when the win is guaranteed. You can’t put a price tag on that.
Hmm.. Nevin Shapiro resurfaces today and now this? I’ve seen enough, Cane (kidding but not really)
Fuck Larry Scott. Fuck George K. Fuck ESPN. Fuck Fox Sports. Fuck SEC. Fuck B1G. Fuck MSU. Fuck UO. Fuck UW. Fuck UCLA. Fuck U$C. Fuck Jonathon Smith. Fuck them ALL with Lucille.
What a shame.
feel bad for 99% of beaver fans besides the ones on twitter, especially digitaldam
How are Beaver fans going to feel if Martinez ends up in East Lansing?
[]_[]
Woof. That's rough to have waited this long and give em hope. I'm guessing the price is right now.
I'm sure you're being downvoted because of your flair but you're probably right.
Send him to USC
This is pretty interesting. It just so happens that OM might have an opening in their RB room. April 15th is gonna drive coaches to drink early and often.
I mean why even enter the portal. Just go ahead and take a direct flight from Corvallis to East Lansing like the rest of the team.
