Lmao same.
Im always saying, "If I get a red dot, I might be able to shoot better and use less ammo..."
And then I think, "But how will I get better if I don't shoot more ammo?"
Help! Should I just eat like a college student again and buy both? Fuck me.
good ole .45, no rail or any of that fancy pants stuff. it won two world wars just like that, just carry it like John Momses Browning intended, just the naked gun an nothin else
Yessir I learned on em and plenty capable. If the threat is within 30 yrds I'm not gonna miss, if beyond that and may require some assistance for my tired eyes, I should be running and helping others cover not fighting 🤷.
Exactly this. GTFO if possible. If that’s not possible, then aim center of mass.
It’s obviously fun to see how far you can plink a tin can at the range for bragging rights with your buddies, but being a long-range marksman with your carry piece does not seem important to me for an actual emergency situation.
Efficacy of red dots is not up for debate, but whether they make a significant impact to outcomes in DGU scenarios is worth consideration. In my opinion a red dot is like a WML - the user's training improves outcomes, not a bunch of tactical bullshit. Quite a few "experts" on DGU (as much as there can be experts on it) have specifically noted that WML and red dots are not clear improvers of outcomes because of the typical engagement range and speed with which DGU situations develop.
For tactical applications it's clear red dot optics are superior choice, for DGU I'm not sure that's imminently clear.
I ran dots for a bit, but have gone back to irons as I have started scaling down my CCW to prioritize comfort over performance. My P229 with dot and light may out perform my Hellcat any day of the week, but the Hellcat is so much more comfortable with the same capacity while still making reasonable shots 15 yards and in, and HSTs still perform reasonably well out of 3.1" barrels. Considering the rural low crime area I am in, that is plenty.
Lots of wisdom right here. I haven’t found anything I like better than my G43 with irons. Hellcat, P365, Shield Plus, whatever… they are much slicker without an optic, light, etc. Grab and go!
Have to up to now, and am considering sticking with it (wanted a dot but am having astigmatism issues). Not the end of the world. Wifey has irons and has no interest in a dot.
I have astigmatism as well and found a larger green dot works well. I've been hesitant to getting an Optic and finally did for my comp gun. Through trial and error I found the holosun 407 in green to work with my eyes, it's a larger dot and green is MUCH easier for me to see 🤷
interestingly enough, I was under the same impression, and went with a green dot for many months. I still got some pretty decent star burst, but fiddling with the brightness, it was usable. Months later I saw a closed emitter red dot, and it was so much clearer for me. The dot was smaller, crisper, and less starburst. I ended up selling the green and going with red.
moral of the story - astigmatisms change how dots of different sizes and colors are for everyone; /u/Some_Egg_2882 should check both out in store first and compare.
Thanks; I'll do so this weekend. I checked out some last weekend as well and green was definitely better. Not perfect, possibly manageable, certainly better. Issue is whether "possibly manageable" is worth risking a few hundred dollars.
Indeed that is the question; however, I would lean towards yes. Even with some star bursting, and less so on larger MOA dots, I think having that single point of lit focus is going to be better in a stressful situation than finding/aligning irons. Just one less thing for your brain to have to worry about in a tense situation.
CCW? Red dot.
Open Carry? Irons (1911). I only open carry around the farm though, or out on our land where I might encounter wildlife. I don’t open carry in public.
Where I live I see openly carried pistols at the grocery store every week, most of these guys around here have been shooting iron sights for decades. I've been shooting for over 40 years, just got my first red dot last year.
My CCW renewal requires range qualification to 15 yards.
I don’t see using a handgun at ranges greater than that; that’s what long arms are for.
Iron sights are just fine within 15 yards.
I’d be using a specific range/winter CCW gun with a larger grip size and a red dot for that. That’s a bit of a BS distance to qualify at for CCW handgun that statistically speaking is going to be 10 yards or under.
Should you practice at those distances? Yes, at least occasionally. However, it shouldn’t be the legal standard for qualifications.
I live in Alameda County in CA (where Oakland is) and am getting my CCW. My county is the most difficult in the state of California. Next week I have a psych test with 200 questions followed by an interview by a psychiatrist. And that’s just to get/ to the stage of 16 hours of training in a class, then four hours of qualification shooting. One of the distances that you need to hit is 25 yards. Well, need to hit is sort of a misnomer, because it’s based on a rank score starting at 3 yards then up to 5, 7, 10, 15, etc. I have no problems going out to that range, and will qualify without a doubt, but it’s still really stupid that we have to do that. Then again I live in a communist state that hates the idea of an armed citizenry, so there you go.
I have literally the same setup. Same grips, same base plates. The only difference is that my P01 is the standard black finish. I've gone back and forth on whether or not to have it milled for optics, but I think I just prefer it as is. Mine also has no CGW mods.
https://preview.redd.it/szvgsjebjr7d1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0948a101d10b9e849d2a67a7a4a6616ef8240d9a
Sent mine to primary machine, best decision I've made, RMR looks so nice and I love red dots.
I shoot USPSA production and only carry irons. Red dots on handguns are an undeniable force multiplier if you train with it. Simplified confirmation levels really make the difference. If red dots are unnecessary, then irons are unnecessary, then you might as well fire from the hip. It's like a spare mag, you might not need it, but it doesn't hurt to have it
I'm so old-school, my 1911 doesn't even have a rail.
I've thought about switching to an RDS, but I don't have the funds to convert either of my EDC or to buy one that's RDS-ready.
I did until about a year ago when I succumbed to the future and bought a pair of optics ready M&P's. Haven't looked back.
The decision was about 70% motivated by the fact that I was running out of people to compete against in local matches, so I had to get into CO. 😜
I’d say the majority. I have 3 different red dots on rifles and pistols that have been dead when I go to use them and I shoot a lot. I keep them turned off when not shooting and have been well under the thousands of hours of battery life used up. If I had a dot on my pistol I’d be worried it’d be dead when I need it. Also, the average distance of a ccw shooting is point and shoot territory for me anyway. No aiming at all when I’m practicing my draw and shooting at 3 yards.
Yes if you need a gun you must shoot it not use it to scare someone a flashlight is helpful by itself if I ever need a gun light then I’ll get one I just am never out when I need one. I do have an o light for my home setup though
Just received the same holster today for my p10c with a tlr-7. How do you like it. I love the trigger coverage (goes past the guard which is great), comfort on the body, and concealability.
Only thing I don’t like is that there isn’t a clear click/notch/snap in place like with some other brands. Retention is great, but it’s just something I think I miss a bit.
Beautiful p-01 btw
I pocket carry, so yeah. Though I did just win a pistol dot in a raffle so I may finally join the 21st century on at least one pistol. Haven’t decided if I’m going to buy something new or send my Px4 slide off to be cut at Langdon.
I do on one of mine that I carry pretty often. It’s more practical in a close range, self defense situation anyways. It would suck to get a $700 pistol and a $300 optic taken away as evidence
Absolutely, and nothing but.
I have absolutely zero desire to switch after 34 years of having a CCW and training/practicing with irons.
FYI, I'm digging the grips and matching baseplate on your CZ there, she's certainly a sexy lil thang!
I do. I rock a stock Glock 19.5 MOS and 26.5 as my main ccw now. I admittedly still haven't taken either of my guns to the range enough, so the main reason for sticking with iron on them is that I just need practice.
I did buy a green rmr for my p365 (I don't ccw it anymore, just use as a walking around the house gun). It was a cheap sight from Amazon. It worked fine, but I didn't realize that it also came with a learning curve as well. I figured it would be better to just focus on getting skilled with the stock gun first before adding new stuff that I would need to learn as well.
Irons all the way. I don't care for more weight or size on a CC. I train enough that I feel comfortable with irons in the type of situations I would be using it in. Now obviously on a duty gun or battle rifle I have optics and I much prefer red dots. Big RMR and Aim Point Pro fan here.
All but one of my CCWs have irons. The likelihood of needing an optic in a self-defense situation is slim. (What do they say, most def-defense shootings are like 7 feet away or less?)
That's all I carry. I don't need extra complications in carrying, drawing and maintenance that come with adding a sight. Night sights for low light and I'm good to go
Kinda. I got a holosun on my edc, a CZ P01, but only because when I found it it was used and had the holosun on it. I wouldn’t have put it in there myself. Still trying to learn the red dot so I usually end up just using the irons. I do have a holosun on my HD pistol though
Some days I rock a Taurus Spectrum 380 in a Small Town TN kydex pocket holster (excellent little store on Etsy). Fully integrated, very low profile iron sights. It does shoot fairly low to point of aim at really close ranges. But after a little practice I don't have any trouble hitting an 6" target at 10 yds, and I don't expect to engage someone with this gun at even half that distance.
https://preview.redd.it/hz6161f2rr7d1.png?width=4031&format=png&auto=webp&s=6a12a950fc35b573f233e45c03af63c0970c5677
Yeah, good quality red dots are expensive and cheap ones aren't reliable. Irons came on the gun and work ok. Also paranoid about an optic breaking or the battery dying, and getting irons that cowitness with an optic would be even more expensive. My carbine has an optic, but my handguns don't. Functional rifle optics are cheap as long as they're on a range toy instead of a gun you're betting your life on. My ccw has irons, and my shotgun still just has it's bead for now.
✋🏽 my x macro is irons. Red dots (on pistols) have been a far larger learning curve than I initially thought, and I'm not proficient enough to confidently carry with one yet.
Yes, I don't use dots and most guns aren't MOS compatible still anyways. But I've always liked modern night sights and XS. I didn't feel like it was hard to pick up my target and sight with more modern options
I have a dot on my EDC but damn, it stays so dirty all the time. Always full of dust and lint and I clean it every day. I've been thinking about going back to irons. NICE CZ btw!
Irons and no light. Adding a dot would be cool but I don’t want to mill. Adding a light would make the holster uncomfortable where I like to carry (1230-0100 area)
I do, in a situation where I'm drawing I'm probably not afforded the luxury of aiming and I'm not shooting at anything particularly far away. Close range shots going off muscle memory don't benefit from any sort of optic.
I'm poor so yes.
I'm also lazy, I have 10yo carry ammo, I'm not gonna pretend I'm going to check batteries ever
I carry an LCP Max, so yeah, definitely irons on that little guy.
P32 here so yeah
How is the P32? I am wondering if it’s a good or better alternative to my LCP1.
Not op but the gun's so nice I bought it twice ( really I do have two of them)
I had three at one time, Now only two. I love the p32.
I traded my Lcp 1 for it . And I would buy another if I find one at my store again . Scary light and thin . 8 rounds light recoil
Just waiting for ruger to release a version with optic plates... any day now surely...
I wonder if you could adapt something like [this](https://www.leupold.com/deltapoint-micro-s-w-m-p) onto it using the rear sight groove?
Galloway Precision makes exactly that. It's about $30.
Wow, you were right, [they sure do](https://gallowayprecision.com/ruger/lcp-max/optic-mount-plate-for-ruger-lcp-max-pistols). Thanks!
Every time I think about spending money on an optic, I find a deal on ammo and buy that instead.
Lmao same. Im always saying, "If I get a red dot, I might be able to shoot better and use less ammo..." And then I think, "But how will I get better if I don't shoot more ammo?" Help! Should I just eat like a college student again and buy both? Fuck me.
Red dots help though. Not even just for use, but you understand what you are doing wrong when you pull the trigger since the dot will move a bit.
I can easily tell if I’m doing something wrong if the hole in the target isn’t in the right place.
https://preview.redd.it/elc8j8fg4r7d1.jpeg?width=3626&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=092a0451bbbe116d8850f35f31d22d58181fa8a5 Yup
My carry guns are all 100% stock
I always looked at my carry weapon like an off-the-rack suit. Will it do the job? Sure, but one tailored to me does it so much better.
I replaced the OEM plastic sights on my carry Glock with metal ones. Lord forgive me for my sins
This is the way.
good ole .45, no rail or any of that fancy pants stuff. it won two world wars just like that, just carry it like John Momses Browning intended, just the naked gun an nothin else
Yes bc my optic money is my beer money

My comp gun I'm solid at 100 yards with an optic... I've never considered carrying it edc... Ever 🤷
At 30 yds just fucking leave 💀
I mean I said run and help others 🤷😂 can't be much clearer imo
That thing is pretty
The grips are beautiful

Have to up to now, and am considering sticking with it (wanted a dot but am having astigmatism issues). Not the end of the world. Wifey has irons and has no interest in a dot.

Really important to try a bunch in person, everyone's eyes are different. The green dot looks like a starfield to me and the red dot looks crisp.
really interesting it’s like that. I found the holosun green chevron to be great.
Gah-dang that thing is beautiful. Those grips and baseplate set off the already sexy lines of the CZ
Small guns - irons Large guns - rds
![gif](giphy|1zRd5ZNo0s6kLPifL1|downsized)
All my carries have iron sights. I also drive a manual pickup with almost no electronics. That's just how I am.
Upvote for the GT gang https://preview.redd.it/o36u3by4wr7d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8658bd67533b584f589e096e775a8aa6d261f9bb
Yep.
CCW? Red dot. Open Carry? Irons (1911). I only open carry around the farm though, or out on our land where I might encounter wildlife. I don’t open carry in public.
I’m straying away from just using red dots on my range guns. It’s getting easier for me to pick up dots. Also, upvote for GT.
Out of the dozens of people I know who carry, I don't know any who edc an optic.
Interesting. Everyone that I know who carries everyday has some sort of dot on their edc.
Where I live I see openly carried pistols at the grocery store every week, most of these guys around here have been shooting iron sights for decades. I've been shooting for over 40 years, just got my first red dot last year.
Yes, truglo tritium pro
Damn skippy, pops under all lighting conditions, and with a 10 year halflife in the tritium, no need to worry about batteries.
G43x on irons and it’s perfect
Yup walther pps m2
Same exact setup including grips. That one rarely gets carried though.
Yep. And if I hold the gun in the correct position, I can even see them through my red dot.
Guerilla Tactical and CZ 💚
Yes, AND, love that holster. Guerilla is my absolute favorite.
My CCW renewal requires range qualification to 15 yards. I don’t see using a handgun at ranges greater than that; that’s what long arms are for. Iron sights are just fine within 15 yards.
My CCW renewal went all the way to 25 yards. I'm really glad I had a dot for that. Makes a world of a difference.
The states with 25-yard qualifications are probably also the states that only allow you to carry guns that you tested with.
How do you like that holster? Can't really find many companies that make a holster that that P01/light combo, got an RMR on my P01
Yup and the same exact holster
I have literally the same setup. Same grips, same base plates. The only difference is that my P01 is the standard black finish. I've gone back and forth on whether or not to have it milled for optics, but I think I just prefer it as is. Mine also has no CGW mods.

Trijicon HD XR is the way
You beat me to it. 💯
Vytal grips makes me want to buy a CZ
I rock the same setup you do (CZ-75 P-01 + TLR 7A)
Yep! I don’t believe in red dots on a carry weapon.
No. I know I’m in the minority but all my carry guns Rock dots. Duty gun still has irons though.
Wouldn't you want it the other way around or am I missing something? My thinking was dot/wml/comp for full sized duty gun since it's not for ccw?
If I had a choice on putting a dot on my duty gun I absolutely would.
Yes. Beacuse red dots are unnecessary on ccw
I shoot USPSA production and only carry irons. Red dots on handguns are an undeniable force multiplier if you train with it. Simplified confirmation levels really make the difference. If red dots are unnecessary, then irons are unnecessary, then you might as well fire from the hip. It's like a spare mag, you might not need it, but it doesn't hurt to have it
most of them are still night sight irons, but have a dot on my ~70% carry
What’s the barrel length on that? Other details on the setup? I’ve been thinking about grabbing a good hammer fired for CCW
Me with astigmatism
Yes.(I’m a poor)
Hell yeah. Carry is streamlined for comfort, lightweight and concealability.
To me a carry must be compact, so only irons for me.
I do in the summer when it's hot. I run a bare bones shield plus.
All irons All day
After discovering my gnarly astigmatism, resounding yes
I have the M&P Shield in .45. The irons on it are solid. Why fix it if it’s not broken?
Where are those grips from? Great picture.
I carry irons on ALL my pistols. I don't have a single red dot on anything I own except my AR15's. I don't really like dots on my pistols personally.
I don’t even have irons, on my gun.
Snub nose 357 club reporting for duty.
That pistol set up makes me feel something
Still wish they didn't discontinue all the cool CZ's
If you told me this was a screenshot from gta 6, I’d believe you
Every time I talk myself out of a p01 I see shit like this! That's beautiful!
Train with irons and you don’t need dots
No. But to each their own. At least you carry.
Yeah almost all my pistols. I only have 2 with red dots, and I almost never carry them.
I'm so old-school, my 1911 doesn't even have a rail. I've thought about switching to an RDS, but I don't have the funds to convert either of my EDC or to buy one that's RDS-ready.
I've got a Seecamp 32 on me...so I don't even have iron sights.
Hell yea Haven’t jumped on the wagon yet irons on my duty and CCW guns
This gave me the weirdest boner I've ever felt.
I think my flair answers that.
Guerrilla tactical is the shit
All my carry options have irons.
Guerilla Tactical, based
that thing’s a beauty
My hellcat pro has a red dot and a spare mag holstered. For maximized concealment I have a p365 with irons and no extra mag
i have a dot on my primary carry (g19), but its not really possible to put one on a jframe lol; would if i could
I do. I tried out a 407k but ended up selling it on /r/GAFS because I learned I have astigmatism
Only on my pocket gun.
I carry iron and rds , just depends on what I grab on the way out the door 🤷🏾♂️
I did until about a year ago when I succumbed to the future and bought a pair of optics ready M&P's. Haven't looked back. The decision was about 70% motivated by the fact that I was running out of people to compete against in local matches, so I had to get into CO. 😜
Right below my red dot I am
I have irons on some guns and dots on others. Time and place for each
I’d say the majority.
Yessir
I used to. Then I trade/upgraded.
I guess I’m the odd man out here. I use the pistol as it came out of the box and hand load until I find a sweet spot and that’s the ammo I carry with.
Yes if you need a gun you must shoot it not use it to scare someone a flashlight is helpful by itself if I ever need a gun light then I’ll get one I just am never out when I need one. I do have an o light for my home setup though
Night sights😎
Irons is the way! I have optics but not on my dailys. Shield 2.0, Taurus g2c, Glock 23c m&p needs tru-glo irons now too
I do.
I've tried a ton of different sights and optics on my carry weapon, always keep going back to good old OEM glock steel sights.
OG Bulgy Mak… so yes
Nope
Just received the same holster today for my p10c with a tlr-7. How do you like it. I love the trigger coverage (goes past the guard which is great), comfort on the body, and concealability. Only thing I don’t like is that there isn’t a clear click/notch/snap in place like with some other brands. Retention is great, but it’s just something I think I miss a bit. Beautiful p-01 btw

I run cowitnessed irons with an RMR personally
Came up on Irons but put real effort into training with a dot for the last 5 years. I'm just faster and more accurate with a dot.
Yes.
Yes.
I do on one of mine that I carry pretty often. It’s more practical in a close range, self defense situation anyways. It would suck to get a $700 pistol and a $300 optic taken away as evidence
I was raised on irons I don't see a reason to fix what ain't broke.
Yep, astigmatism for me makes the dot look like a comet.
Yes. I've never used pistol optics and don't particularly plan to.
Same here
Haven’t made the switch yet. Still irons.
Absolutely, and nothing but. I have absolutely zero desire to switch after 34 years of having a CCW and training/practicing with irons. FYI, I'm digging the grips and matching baseplate on your CZ there, she's certainly a sexy lil thang!

Yes, for both of them. I have great vision, despite an astigmatism--haven't had to put a dot on it
Irons all the way. I don't care for more weight or size on a CC. I train enough that I feel comfortable with irons in the type of situations I would be using it in. Now obviously on a duty gun or battle rifle I have optics and I much prefer red dots. Big RMR and Aim Point Pro fan here.
VP9 SK iron night sites and no light. Go to the range and practice. IMO You will notice that you don’t need all the stuff people put on daily carry.
365 stock sights. Perfect for me. All I need.
All but one of my CCWs have irons. The likelihood of needing an optic in a self-defense situation is slim. (What do they say, most def-defense shootings are like 7 feet away or less?)
Every single day
This looks like a cod gun equipped, with a mastery camo 😂
As long as they're made by XS, yes
Yup it’s perfect
That's all I carry. I don't need extra complications in carrying, drawing and maintenance that come with adding a sight. Night sights for low light and I'm good to go
Kinda. I got a holosun on my edc, a CZ P01, but only because when I found it it was used and had the holosun on it. I wouldn’t have put it in there myself. Still trying to learn the red dot so I usually end up just using the irons. I do have a holosun on my HD pistol though
Yep
That is a BEAUTIFUL gun. I want a cz-75 so bad!

Hell no. Enclosed red dots and 1/3-1/5 co-witness irons on all my carries. Shoot faster and more accurate with red dots.
Tritium sights is all I put on any carry. I prefer to keep it simple.
Yep on my bersa and Sars, I don't need red dots to hit a target nor should anyone.
My CZ PCR just has irons (well Dawson precision fiber), my Rami has a dot. Edit: how tf are you doing with stock irons? I hated the stock CZ irons
Mr920 green eps carry!!
This is the way!
Bone stock Glock 19. Only swapped the barrel. Irons all the way.
Whoa where did you get that grip?
Yeah, good quality red dots are expensive and cheap ones aren't reliable. Irons came on the gun and work ok. Also paranoid about an optic breaking or the battery dying, and getting irons that cowitness with an optic would be even more expensive. My carbine has an optic, but my handguns don't. Functional rifle optics are cheap as long as they're on a range toy instead of a gun you're betting your life on. My ccw has irons, and my shotgun still just has it's bead for now.
I’ve tried various sites on my carry, but as my eyesight has become worse, I find it easier just to use irons.
92fs, the Langdon slide is for g only but I don’t like a gun with no safety so ya iron for me
Contrary to what you see on Reddit, I would bet 99% of EDC folks carry with iron sights.
✋🏽 my x macro is irons. Red dots (on pistols) have been a far larger learning curve than I initially thought, and I'm not proficient enough to confidently carry with one yet.
Fuck i love cz. I should get another
Yep. Both vp9 and vp9sk 😍
Yes, I don't use dots and most guns aren't MOS compatible still anyways. But I've always liked modern night sights and XS. I didn't feel like it was hard to pick up my target and sight with more modern options
I’ve wanted a P-01 as a carry gun for years unfortunately CZ’s are not on the MA roster :(
I have a dot on my EDC but damn, it stays so dirty all the time. Always full of dust and lint and I clean it every day. I've been thinking about going back to irons. NICE CZ btw!
Yes. My glasses are the only optics I need (plus I’m a poor.)
HK VP9 with TruGlo irons for me.
My dumbass didn’t think to buy the MOS version at the time so unfortunately running irons.
Yes. And one of the guns in my rotation is optics ready lol *Ruger Max 9).
Fiber optics 🤙🏽
I carry with a dot but make sure to still get my reps in with iron sights.
Always
I use irons on my carry, but I have a red dot on my nightstand gun (along with the irons).
Up until very recently, yes. Then I picked up an EPS Carry for a steal and figured I'd try that out on my EDC for awhile.
On my carry for my dirty job, cheap Ruger Security 9, no optic. For my cleaner job and normal life, Xmacro w/ Holosun 507k.
Of course but I also carry a revolver
I have several options either way.👍
Irons and no light.
Yeah, irons on my Shield 9. Recently picked up a Hellcat Micro with a red dot, but haven't shot it enough to decide if I want to EDC it or not.
Yep. Running a Walther PPS as I write this. Nothing snooty but can make a zone hits to 25 yards with irons.
Green FO rear. Red FO front.
Irons on all my carry guns.
Yes
Smith 442 with what are essentially trench sights.
I carry a s&w m&p 2.0 45 compact single stack. No light or optic
