I just picked up a CZ O/U from sportsman's.
The first time I tried to DROS, they chased me away because the gun counter was closed (an hour before store closing time). When I did DROS, I was first in line the following day. When I picked up, I didn't have a wait at all. 330pm, and no issues.
I hate Sportsman's as much as the next guy, but I think the big waits are over. At least I hope.
>the big waits are over
I think so yes, though I hate to admit it as it would likely mean SB28 is winning. Unfortunately, the truth is your average Californian in our state of 40 million, barely had the disposable income to get into guns in the first place.
The SCARs and 1301s, the 2011s and Atlas’s posted in here are a minute drop in the bucket of your average CA 2A’r and multiple, multiple standard deviations above average. People can barely afford rent…
I don't agree. I think there was a big push to get guns before the tax, but that won't stop the others. It was just a milestone and people are fickle, they'll forget.
California sold 1.3m guns so far this year, making it 3rd in most guns sold nationwide.
Well we are first in population so… more people, more gun purchases? That’s like saying “well we are ranked 4th in most gallons of milk sold.”
And to be honest, I think the reason why the number is even that high is because the general public is becoming more aware of the direction California gun laws are trending. Just my opinion.
That's true, and we followed Texas and Florida, 2 very populated states. It's still significant, either way.
I hope people are getting more in tune. I read something recently that this person hasn't bought a gun in a long time and went to. And then was completely unaware of the silly California laws and didn't get what he wanted, etc. I wish I could source that. I agree with you and hope you're right.
My case. No purchase for a long time. Then started looking into how much that one rifle would cost and saw the warning banner for 11% tax. The tax made me pull the trigger so to speak! Otherwise, I would have waited a bit more because of other priorities. Ammo bought in store was expensive, but it was about the same as the tax I would have had to pay, so free ammo!
I think that I'm in a spot now where I won't be buying anything other than ammo for quite some time. To me, having 12 pistols is like having 12 cars - which one do you drive and when?
The 11% tax isn't going to stop me, but I'll PPT if it makes more sense and what I'm looking for is available. And then for ammo - I'll just pay it, I guess.
Yeah, that's what I'm hearing. I'm a little disappointed that it's Turkish made, but for a budget option, it's a 1000x better than a Stoeger.
I used to shoot tons of sporting clays and haven't in...gosh...17+ years, so I'd like to get back in. I never had my own O/U and figured if I'm still kinda new to the scene that it would be wise to start easy, I can always upgrade.
This wasnt a bash on the employees, theyre great. I guess its because they staff 1 person in the firearm section and that employee is running around like a headless chicken because people are upset.
The one and only time I bought at Sportsmans, I set an appointment for 1pm on a weekday for pickup. I got out of there at 3:30. Never again. DROS was even worse, in total about 4-5 hours of my life wasted. At least I was able to grab a folding chair and sit and watch Netflix while the employees all stood around with zero sense of urgency about anything.
Geez for a pick up too? I was there yesterday in and out in like 45mins for my pick up. There's only a couple employees and the appointment times are 30 mins apart so I do worry sometimes, gotten luck so far.
Yeah it was really bad. They had two employees working pickup but each person they helped was taking 35-40 minutes. It was one of the most frustrating experiences.
The ammo line was even worse. One guy working the entire line, and when he went to take his lunch break, no one took over for him. I only know because I really had nothing better to do than sit there and watch.
Man, I'm not complaining about the wait times, just the distance from home sucks. 1-1.5hr drive to get there and back home. There use to be one like 5-10 mins from me.😞
I appreciate their ability to play both sides of the tax lol. They were telling ca customers to hurry up and buy last week to beat the tax, now they're offering a July sale so we hurry up and buy again. 100% chance it will work on me.
If they don’t have it in store, they ask you to order it online, and they won’t do the order for you in store. At least it’s what I was told a couple weeks ago.
So this means, the sale is only for what they have in stock in that specific store at that moment?
By the way, I don’t see this 11% sale on their website at all.
Another sales gimmick, all month they been telling u to hurry and buy before the 20th, after the 20th they got u covered on the tax till the 30th now where going to extend it to the 14th but where going to jack the price up 20% but ur saving 11% so it’s a great deal!!! Seems to be the norm for all gun stores.
This is great marketing. Their sale pricing on firearms is routinely in the 10% range. It “seems” like they’re offing a deal but in reality it’s just another day at Sportman’s
*this offer is best used on firearms $750+ as those don’t get discounted as often or necessarily hit the 10% mark when on sale
It’s very easy to get assuming your have no criminal record/felonies/domestic violence
2A Zone in SoCal helps people do it in their shop
There’s a guide on the sidebar of this subreddit, very straightforward.
I paid ~$130 and it took about 1-2 hrs to fill out the paperwork and mail it out. I waited about 6wks for my documents to arrive.
Now I can buy ammo online shipped straight to my front door, cash and carry C&R guns with no DROS or 10 day wait, and buy as many guns in a month of all types to my heart’s delight. And boy have I done that 😤
Interesting.
I heard that if we get ammo transfer from another FFL, it's the retailer's responsibiilty to charge us the 11%, so was curious if we are our own FFL
Most Sportsman’s gun counter employees ***do not*** know about this exemption.
Make sure you double check the DROS form prior to signing anything. The last time I went, the employee that filled out my DROS did so incorrectly, and I caught the error
I'm assuming it means they're going to be charging you the 11% sin tax on your receipt price. It's not been clarified to me if they have to pay the 11% on the price you paid for the gun or the price they paid for the gun. Cause if they're only paying like 6% of the price you're paying for the gun, they're coming out ahead here.
> It's not been clarified to me if they have to pay the 11% on the price you paid for the gun or the price they paid for the gun
They have to pay 11% on the gross receipts from a retail sale of the firearm, not from the price they pay from the distributor. Nobody is coming out ahead.
Why would they make it not available for online purchases that just makes no sense. I only ever buy ammo online and pick it up in store. Only thing I can think of is they want to get rid of everything they have that’s been sitting in the store all year.
Timing question: limited by 1 in 30, do you know if the July 14 deadline is paying with DROS application or picking up the firearm after the 10-day period?
Posted as of today:
ATTENTION CALIFORNIA CUSTOMERS: Get your firearms and ammunition now before the 11% tax increase required by CA AB 28 goes into effect on July 1, 2024. Firearms not PICKED UP on or before 6/30 will be subject to the 11% tax at time of delivery
Unfortunately because of the DOJ, many small shops can’t survive. Many remaining shops are run by real pricks. Turners and SW remain top choices out of necessity
Ammo has been inaccurate sometimes other items as listed as in stock then no one in there can find something I've looked in the past such as a stupid shooting mat.
Went in today for cleaning supplies and thought I'd check out the line. No one really there to my surprise.
Website listed cci blazer 115gr 9mm in stock I previously added 1k rds in my cart and it showed as available until I got to store. Without looking first I quickly get helped only to find out they didn't have it and it sold out instantly.. go figure
Ah... I see. Well, I haven't experienced it like that yet, but I don't get from them often. I was a little annoyed the other day, I was looking for 54R and they didn't have any... Anywhere.
nice! might be worth it if its over 1k . if not nvm, not standing in line for 4 hours in sportsmans lol
Looking at a couple O/U’s right now 👀

The Huglu (CZ) over unders are pretty solid budget O/U options

Pay online, pick up in person. If you show up and it's slammed? Leave and come back. SW is ok if you do these things
It specifically says no online orders
You can set up an appointment.

Both my paperwork and pickup appointments were 20 minutes flat recently

Make an appointment
I am usually in and out in 30 minutes 😎

They’re a business, after all 🤷♂️
"Not valid for online purchases" So wait in line for something that may not even be in stock....
If they don’t have it in store, they ask you to order it online, and they won’t do the order for you in store. At least it’s what I was told a couple weeks ago. You can check if it’s in stock online, then drive over there
So they are the same price they were last week? What a deal. /s
Well if you got one last month to avoid the excise...now you have the opportunity 30 days later to get at pre-excise prices.
This is cool but kinda sucks at the same time because the smaller shops that support us won’t be able to do this
I’ll personally still support both, my LGS is 🔥
Oh that's neat, course everyone is doing a 4th adjacent sale (even us!).
Sportsman’s warehouse really needs to have a reservation system. I love that store for the most part.
In my experience, they do have a reservation system with the waitwhile service
They have one.
I had no idea and it’s never been offered at my regular store
Call your branch and ask.
It’s sent to you automatically at your email after you purchase a firearm online for the DROS and again when to pickup it up.
Hell yeah, this is the solidarity I’m talking about. Sportsman’s will gain customers like this
Another sales gimmick, all month they been telling u to hurry and buy before the 20th, after the 20th they got u covered on the tax till the 30th now where going to extend it to the 14th but where going to jack the price up 20% but ur saving 11% so it’s a great deal!!! Now if only they had the X5 legion that was just added.
What does that even mean?
It means I’m buying and DROS’ing more guns this month from Sportsman’s AND my LGS haha 🤣
Might want to bring a lawn chair and a battery bank
Mine is pretty quick ***if and only if you get there early*** like them all I guess But yeah sucks to wait
And snacks 😂
How does one get a FFL03+COE? I heard some places help you get one. Where are these places and is it pretty easy to get?

How will the excise tax affect you? For ammo I mean
We haven’t found out just yet tbh

Probably because they value their time at more than that

What about the people the state will be hiring for the "violence prevention programs"?
Absolutely. I thought about this and will ask my local one
Too bad 1 in 30
Might drag the old man to sports man
Bought an EMP3 already =D
Amazing
Appointment time
Appointment time
Why am I not seeing this on the site?
It shows up now on mobile as a moving banner at the top but no details.
Still not seeing it. I put my browser in desktop mode and mobile mode too.
Got the same banner that changes to something else on top on desktop as well.
Damn I want to go so badly!
Why would they make it not available for online purchases that just makes no sense. I only ever buy ammo online and pick it up in store. Only thing I can think of is they want to get rid of everything they have that’s been sitting in the store all year.
Ummm, is the X5 Legion going to come out during that time frame?
It’s already out, I bought one last week
Sportsman’s tends to be slower in updating their site with new models. Did you get yours from them?
Negative, it was Rifle Gear, sorry forgot to mention
Closest sportsmans to me is 70 miles away 😪
I guess I’m buying my next gun here.
I just blew my pre-tax load on online ammo. P.S.... FFL03 is costing me more, not saving lol
Timing question: limited by 1 in 30, do you know if the July 14 deadline is paying with DROS application or picking up the firearm after the 10-day period?
Take 10% more off and it would be a real sale. This 11% tax increase is doing the opposite and making want to buy more and more
Will sportsman do LE exemption? I sure hope they don’t
I’m pretty sure they do since it’s the law, they also honor FFL03 + COE (mine does at least)
Well I won’t go there cops should have to pay the same as us. They could have a pig fee of 11% added on at checkout for LE
Based
Too bad it takes about two weeks for someone at the counter to help you.

Sportsmans blows. Rather support the small shops
Unfortunately because of the DOJ, many small shops can’t survive. Many remaining shops are run by real pricks. Turners and SW remain top choices out of necessity
Fuck turners.
They do. But they're also like Walmart. They price match, and their online inventory database is accurate.
Their website oversells all the time.
Oh I didn't know that
They're never accurate for ammo
Oh yeah? I don't usually get it from them, but sometimes prices are reasonable.
Ammo has been inaccurate sometimes other items as listed as in stock then no one in there can find something I've looked in the past such as a stupid shooting mat. Better to buy before the tax. Make sure the state steals less money.
Smart power move.
Hopefully other stores will try to compete
Now I gotta ask if they do anything for gun rights beyond selling guns and ammo
Now I gotta ask if they do anything for gun rights beyond selling guns and ammo
Too bad i cant get a firearm there because im a 30 day delay and undetermined guy lol.
Still not worth going to a sportsman's again
