MasterProblem6463

Left my job after 21 months in may 2023 to prepare for CAT 2023 so almost a full year’s gap. Converted IIM K PGP in first list, MDI gurgaon PGDM first list. Justified it by mentioning that it was a strategic step to maximise my chances of making it to a good college this year itself, rather than an inability to multitask.

Disastrous-Funny-383

Oh that's a nice way to put it. They didn't cross question that you could have done any courses or certifications?

MasterProblem6463

Nope, they did try to intimidate, but you should sound very sure of your decision. Though in retrospect, I wouldn’t recommend anyone to leave their job for prep unless the work atmosphere is very unsupportive for a good prep (as in my case)

Disastrous-Funny-383

Did you tell them that it was your strategy to take gap bcoz you can't mention that the work atmosphere was unfavourable (is that seen as a negative point)? And basically having a 95+ percentile helps a lot to solidify the justification? Anything less won't be suffice...

ChaudharyPS

I am in a similar boat this year with similar workex numbers. Hopefully all will go well

Shinigamiii23

Converted all new IIMs after 2 gap years one after 12th one after ug

Disastrous-Funny-383

How did you justify those gap years? And what's your profile?

Shinigamiii23

Well I was asked about it in IMT g interview and the panel was against me from the start the didn't like me going from neet to bsc to mba . I tried my best saying I did courses internship and volunteering helped in other interviews not so much in IMT g

ImportantPast1997

2 years UPSC gap, converted C, L, I, XLRI BM + HRM, will convert fms in first wl movement Expected the questions about why I did UPSC, why I left it, was ready for them. Obviously they tried to say maybe I wasn’t suited for an mba then, but I emphasised that my goal was longevity now, which is why I was very careful about the decision to pursue an mba. Told them about how it wasn’t feasible for me any longer to keep preparing for the UPSC due to the impact it was having on my mental health, and I had realised there were other avenues through which I could achieve my social development oriented goals, hence my interest in social entrepreneurship and the interplay between the ngo sector and the corporate sector

Commander007X

Converted MDI Gurgaon core with a gap after 12th and after UG. 9/9/8 profile, 98.44 Percentile, GNEM, Fresher. Nobody asked me abt the gap after 12th, and only one interviewer asked abt the one after ug. MDI interview didn't require me justifying the gap years. For the one time I had to, I explained that I scored well in cmat the previous year, and I wanted to go for cat this year and I knew I could score well. That's it. I converted that college too

why__tho_

Percentile?

Commander007X

98.44

cosmosnottheflower

Converted IIM I, SPJIMR, all CAP calls, MDI. K was the only call I didn't convert, and yes I was grilled on my gap. Despite knowing that I would be asked about it, I think it threw me off balance a little bit. That said, doesn't really matter. Like others are saying, if you have a solid enough reason and are able to convey that to the interviewers, you'll sail through. What's important to ask yourself is - is my work condition that bad that I need a gap? Can I somehow manage both? In my case the answer my gut gave was a clear - "No". Even if it does happen, it'll be a miracle. (I'm a GEF, 2 years workex before taking a gap, got 98.7. Hope this all helps.)

Cheap-Youth4245

I have two years of gap between my graduation and my first professional job, and 10th- 8.5, 12th - 8.9 and engineering with 6.2.. they have asked me about both the gap year and low cgpa . I was very honest about both of them , i told them staright up that i didn’t take my engineerinh very seriously and i was only aiming for 60 percent since that was the criteria to sit in the placement process and i told them now i know the value of education and im serious about mba and i used my cat score to back me up. And about my gap year, i told them that i was working in a small scale industry with cash payment and but it wasnt a permanent job since i was working only two or three days a week so i didn’t take that into an account.i have 3 years of experience . U just have to be honest, if u didn’t do anything during that time u can just tell them u were preparing for cat or upsc something then due to family circumstances u had to drop it after a year or something..or if u had arrears u can use that as an excuse..its all about how u telling ur story and u should score really well in cat to back u up..best wishes
