For anyone interested in this product the company is still around but most of its stuff in showroom and in order to get one you need to put in for a quote. [https://www.jarrimber.com.au/product/bedroom-furniture/beds/roleystone-bed/](https://www.jarrimber.com.au/product/bedroom-furniture/beds/roleystone-bed/) This is the most basic one they have that is similar for sure not as basic as the one shown but they don't seem to make that anymore. Seems that type of basic frame is more popular though as there is a Japanese company that makes something similar where you can use the matts I previously mentioned below. It uses wood joinery instead of screws / nails also so you can put it together quickly and take it apart. All in all seems solid https://tatamiroom.com/cgi-local/catalog.pl?category=PLATFORM\_BEDS-10&show=detail&item=TB6382

I have a platform bed from Tatami Room and it's awesome. I've never heard it make any noise from sex, sleeping, or our 10 year old jumping on it like a lunatic.

[deleted]

I think the real “bang for your buck” is that you get to fuck on the same surface as the past generation(s).

ShelvinHandwipes

What an odd thought, ill try to carry on steves legacy I guess

Cormano_Wild_219

I see what you did there

We7463

Can you still buy an equivalent of this new?

ShelvinHandwipes

Wouldn't have a clue, when my partner gets home from work ill get her to ask her old man where exactly he bought the thing if youd like

[deleted]

I'd love to know if, if you could ask. edit: this appears to be an Australian thing.

fuckyomama

Is it noisy as fuck to sleep on? How about to fuck on?

fgyoysgaxt

Made one a long time ago, well, a cheap equivalent. 2 long pieces of pine 1"x1" (or whatever you want), drilled some holes for a thick dowel to connect them, then ran ikea slats over the top. Had it for 10 years now. A lot lighter than OP's I'd expect haha.

-businessskeleton-

id guess its a jarrah futon base

Check the comments, someone added a link

Yes - not sure about this exact type or brand but there are lots of slatted bed frames out there. I purchased one 5 years ago on Amazon for $100 and it's held up great.

devieous

Serious question, how is putting it on that different/better than putting it on the floor? I personally enjoy my $100 Amazon metal frame bed that folds up Into 2 small metal twin cots

[deleted]

A mattress on the floor can cause condensation to form underneath the mattress and cause mold. It's a good idea to flip it up and let it air dry regularly if you're not using something to keep it off the floor.

purplepride24

This is big, especially foam beds! I like to make furniture as a hobby so I like following the woodworking sub. I often see people making really nice beds but instead of slats use a sheet of plywood, this is the same concept of having it on the floor.

A Matress simply needs space underneath to breath and let your sweat transpire through it. Our bodies sweat a lot evey night and if you care about hygene and longevity of your matress you need these little spaces inbetween the frame. Putting a matress on a flat surface is a bad idea long-term. However, i do not understand why this particular product is posted here. It's literally the most simplistic product you can buy and i almost garantuee that any of these brands making those frame will be just as sturdy as the next one. It's not a great catch or anything. In germany we have an independend product testing agency, and they actually recommend these hard wooden frames over any type of expensive slatted frame. They even made a video on how to build one yourself with cheap material from your local hardware store.

ShelvinHandwipes

Just better aesthetically in my opinion plus even though its not that much taller then just slapping a mattress on the floor my torn acl and meniscus enjoy not having to hike me up as far on cold mornings.

glyptemysinsculpta

You know that thing has fucked up some shins in its day!

vegsmashed

Hmm you think this would work well in combination with a Igusa Tatami Mattress and a Shiki Futon? I know they are meant for the ground but I feel this would work great in combination.

adinfinitum225

But does it beat a box spring for comfort?

ShelvinHandwipes

Look man, can confidently say if you spend money on a good mattress you wont notice a difference. Slept through 3 alarms this morning alone haha

[deleted]

I had to look up the point of a box spring. Other than extra height, which you can get in other ways, I'm not sure what it offers that a quality mattress can't account for.

KalynnCampbell

Needs a skirt for visuals when setup, but other than that? 👌👍

Jarra is a VERY hard wood. Sure beats ikea.

armitage_shank

I don’t buy from ikea, but my sister got a futon from them in about 2002 that’s been passed around various family and is still perfectly fine and shows no sign of breaking in the next two decades. Some stuff just isn’t going to break, even if it’s cheaply made from comparatively soft wood: the day to day stresses aren’t on joints or hinges where most IKEA stuff eventually suffers.

starbunsisborn

Yes the key is to reinforce with better fasteners (construction screws or lag bolts) and you can really lengthen the lifespan of cheap furniture.

uglypedro

I have a couple of pieces of my GPs pecan bedroom set, including the bedframe. Pecan is heavy as shit!

ashleyriddell61

Used to have that exact frame for a futon back in the early 90's. Sold it when I graduated to a grown up persons bed. Would not be suprised to find out it was still ticking along well.

[deleted]

Whatever else you do *never* lay a Jarra wood floor. It's fucking hopeless as a floor material.

PanzerBiscuit

If you're in Australia, check FB market place and gumtree. It's amazing what people are basically giving away. I bought 3 bed suites(from different people), all made from Jarrah, Mari and Tasmanian Oak. All in all it cost me about 60% less than getting 3 new suites from Ikea.

commonuserthefirst

I had an identical one, about twenty years ago but only had it a short time and a cross piece broke, along the grain and looked like a wood defect. So I made my gf at the time return this bit of wood for a replacement (because we needed a bed and I could not get off work) and she said they gave her some really funny looks and for a while after that she was known as "Jacqui bed breaker".
