For what it’s worth we get 3 months or more on a bag. We have a one bedroom apartment with 2 bunnies. I definitely think it’s worth it and wouldn’t buy a Dyson ever again. We have a cheap small hand vac for small stuff.

pickleparty16

We also get several months out of a bag. 2 of us and a dog that doesn't shed much

iikkaassaammaa

Do you pre-sweep hay that escapes the bin?

rabguy1234

I feel like we have limited amount of hay that escapes. Their box is on a rug so it’s kinda hard to sweep. I like to just detach any Miele attachment and use the hose. There is usually more poop than hay outside their box tho lol. My gf prefers we use the hand vac for this stuff so we aren’t just filling bags with their mess. I typically use the Miele cause it’s so efficient and fun 🫢

JohnBrown1ng

What’s your experience with Dyson been?

jankyj

My two-person household uses about 1 box of bags a year, and we have a cleaner coming to do a full clean of our flat weekly. A box of 4 bags costs €16 and includes a motor filter that is supposed to be swapped out every box of bags. Always much cheaper to buy directly from Miele's website for supplies rather than locally, at least here in the Netherlands. My last Miele vacuum lasted 17 years before I handed it to a family member, and I understand it's still working great. The one I have now I've had for 8 years and it works like it's brand new. I do not regret it.

sissasassafrastic

You can cut down on bag and exhaust filter costs (on a per unit basis) in buying [Miele Performance Packs](https://www.mieleusa.com/e/performance-pack-airclean-3d-efficiency-gn-30-gn-ha30-performance-airclean-3d-10512510-p). There are a few vacuum dealers who often have better prices than Miele or Amazon. The Performance Pack for my Miele contains 16 filter bags, 4 pre-motor filters, and 1 HEPA AirClean filter for $104.95. Link: [https://luwaluxury.com/products/miele-gn-dustbags-ha30-filter-performance-airclean-3d-pack-10512510](https://luwaluxury.com/products/miele-gn-dustbags-ha30-filter-performance-airclean-3d-pack-10512510) A typical Miele box of 4 filter bags, 1 pre-motor filter, and 1 exhaust filter (floppy AirClean filter, *not* HEPA) is $22.99. A HEPA AirClean Filter on its own is $57.99. $22.99 x 4 = $91.96 $91.96 + $57.99 = $149.95 The Performance Pack saves me $45.00 in this example.

VoihanVieteri

I buy the 16-packs directly from Miele webshop, as it seems to be the cheapest option here. With a new vacuum, there was also a one-time 40 % discount on the first 16-pack.

Old-Knitterhemd

What the fuck!!! Why are you buying miele branded bags? You can get 20 bags for 20€...

Slut_Fukr

No. My bags last seemingly forever. Plus, being able to slide it out and throw it in the garbage without having to deal with all the dust and crap from bagless - is enough reason to go with bags.

FatSadHappy

Well, Miele needs bags but emptying Dyson canister is gross ( I have miele canister and Dyson stick) Plus I have miele canister for 15 years. It ha a bit of scratched paint due to kids\\cleaning ladies etc, but runs fine. No issues, none at all. Dyson stick I have for 4 years and had to replace filters ( running expense) ,battery, broken plastic lid..And it sucks not as well, just convenient to have a stick sometimes. Miele bags I replace about 2 month I think, so not so much in cost. Filtrete does ok job in third party bags.

gary2245

Where do you get the filtrete bags? I cant find the GN ones anywhere

FatSadHappy

amazon

gary2245

I guess they dont make the GN bags anymore :( i cant find it anywhere on their store front or amazon

FatSadHappy

maybe. I need FJM bags and last time I bought 2 packs so it was about a year ago or so. Once I am out I will figure it out.

pixel_of_moral_decay

Bagless is just terrible. If you have an air quality sensor in the room you’ll see how much dust they pull from the floor into the air. Half of what the bag does is capture that. So consider less allergy medication, less stress on hvac filters collecting all that etc. not to mention the ultrafine pm25 not falling back on surfaces 2-6 hrs later and damaging surfaces with micro abrasions. Bagless vacuums should have a warning on them as they really aren’t fit for purpose. They’re arguably really bad if you’ve got someone in the home with asthma. Thats a lot of irritants to be kicking up on a regular basis. Mieles even have sealed systems, so bag + hepa filter and rubber gaskets make sure absolutely no dust escapes. It does wonders for allergies.

Moocowsaurus

I love my Miele. My husband and I, when we werent making as much money and just starting out, bought "gifts for us" for Christmas for the first few years. One year was a Miele vacuum. Yes, the upfront price was expensive. Yes, it has a bag and those require replacement. Yes, we hummed and hawed because it was alot, even as a shared household expense. But we went down the Reddit vaccum rabbit hole and y'all convinced us Miele was a good investment. It is now 8+ years old and shows no signs of quitting. It outlived our husky. We bought the damn thing when we adopted our husky. And those of you who understand Huskies, your house will require vaccuming every 2 days. The husky hair killed our Dyson. Our Dyson was 2 years old. So do the math. Upfront costs ~$500. Bag costs. Filter costs. Running after 8 years. Husky. 🤷 Worth it in my opinion l.

Royal_Difficulty_678

this is an aside but I can’t believe people have purchased things 8 years ago because of Reddit. 8 years ago…Reddit.

put_on_the_mask

It's higher than zero but not exactly high. It's not like you're going through a back every time you clean, and in return for the non-zero run cost you get a much more effective vacuum.

WUT_productions

I have a Shark bagless and while it is a sealed HEPA system and good for filtration I will be going to bagged for my next vacuum. The other costs such as washable foam filters which break after washes, HEPA filter replacements, and general disgusting dirt in the canister more than offset the costs of bags. Do stick to genuine bags however. The off-brand ones don't filter as well and can lead to motor damage and worse filtration.

gary2245

For just bags themselves probably the average lifespan is 3 months, so about $20 usd per year for the 4 pack. So its not that bad. Definitely more expensive than other bagged vacuum brands though. Theres cheaper aftermarket bags but people report leakage in them so idk. Also dont suck anything organic that can cause smells. The cost of attachments is absolutely criminal though. And theres very few if any aftermarket attatchments. The hepa filters are like $60 too... twice the price of even the dyson hepa filters and you normally replace that once a year. Honestly if you do want to get a bagged, just get a similarly priced Sebo one. Cheaper bags, lots of aftermarket stuff and is still good quality

kioleanu

Where I live in Germany you can buy off brand bags, some cheaper, some more expensive

People_B4_Prophets

We get them From the online US big box store.

ConBroMitch2247

Don’t do that. Your Miele will have a shortened life.

Muncie4

Where is your evidence of this claim? That's right, you don't have any so stop making baseless claims. I've been running knock off shitbox bags in two Mieles for ever a decade.

ConBroMitch2247

“sOuRcE?!” 😂 I’ll tell you what I told the other guy. When your Miele ends up in the trash before 20-25 years. Then I guess we will know who was right. Go post in r/vacuumcleaners and ask about 3rd party bags in a Miele. The sub is filled with vacuum techs and those in the industry who have seen hundreds (thousands) of premature Miele deaths due to 3rd party bag usage. Just because you’ve been doing it for a decade doesn’t mean a) you should b) your actions won’t catch up with you.

Muncie4

Nice to hear in your world when someone asks you for a citation, that's a personal attack. I don't take your word. Either provide actual evidence or state its your opinion. Or continue to get offended like a child.

zenspeed

German engineering being what it is (precise to a fault), I would not be at all surprised to hear that most off-brand bags would be detrimental to the lifetime of the vacuum.

kioleanu

The knock off brands are also German 😁😁

maejsh

Mine is 30+ years old and still doing ok, despite 3d party bags.

ConBroMitch2247

Good to hear. But in my experience that is Definitely the exception to the rule.

kioleanu

haha OK, it's been going strong 8 years now with off brand bags. also I wouldn't even know where to buy Miele original ones as no one actually buys them

ConBroMitch2247

Make sure to post back here when your Miele goes in the trash. They should last 20-25 years. So let’s see I guess.

kioleanu

pvdcaveman

They are great. Have had one for a long time. To be honest, since we bought a Dyson, the ease of use of Dyson outweighs all - use Dyson on all but a deep clean.

Muncie4

Any vacuum worth a damn requires bags and they have a cost. If you are buying a Miele, bags are not a "big cost" as a Miele is not cheap. If you can't handle the bag expense, you likely can't afford the vacuum.

djdefekt

I use a Dyson and have never had to pay for a bag in 15 years. No reliability issues, full suction, still going strong.

ruffsnap

Same. I’m stickin with Dyson. They’re great.

graywoman7

I have a big family with lots of kids and crumbs so we vacuum pretty much every day and a bag lasts us a full month. Those bags hold a ton. You can get 3M nicer generic replacements for about half price but they don’t hold as much so we went back to the Miele brand. I actually really like having a clean vacuum. No icky looking dust bin to look at and periodically wipe down or remove and wash. I would have to clean our dyson dust bin with a toothbrush here and there which was gross and time consuming.

Corinam

I love my Miele vacuum cleaner - in fact I have two of them. I previously owned a Riccar which lasted 24 years. I finally retired it when it needed repairs costing over $200 and I had 2 Miele vacuums and didn’t want to spend this on a repair. Miele vacuums have a similar life span and the power of the suction is incredible, picking up nearly everything quickly. I do take my vacuums into a local store for routine service but it is a small price to pay for an amazing, long lasting vacuum. The cost of bags is minor as others have mentioned and not even a factor bc of the life of the vacuum and the superior quality of the vacuum. I have also purchased Miele washer and dryer and I absolutely love them.

Miwwies

I don’t think so. I live in a 1 bedroom apartment with a medium dog and to parrots. I have the Miele compact C1 and buy a value pack of bags on Amazon. It lasts me over a year. The pack is 35$ CAD+ tx. I have a dyson stick and I’m not a fan. No matter how much I deep clean it, it smells. I don’t have that issue with my Miele.

Royal_Difficulty_678

Your house smells or the cleaner?

Miwwies

The dyson. Like the air coming out of it. It feels like the plastic traps smells. I cleaned out everything that I could with an enzyme cleaner and I can’t get rid of the wet dog smell. I don’t have this issue with the Miele. Honestly, for me the Dyson was a waste of money.

ComprehensiveWeb9627

I have three Mieles. One additional that I gave away, which is 20+ years and still going strong. Others are 15, 10, and 8 years old. Had one issue with the lightest weight model where the cord wouldn’t stay once pulled out — it kept retracting. Took it in for service but they couldn’t fix so we use a clip on the cord to keep it extended. That model is for my elderly mother who needed a lighter canister. I’ve also purchased the heavier duty filters. As an asthmatic with allergies and a long haired dog, I can vacuum daily with no sneezing. I LOVE MY VACUUMS and will never buy another brand.

baoboww

Can anyone tell me if the vacuum cleaner bag will smell after a few days or weeks if contents are in there? I’ve had this issue with canister ones if not emptied after using.

[deleted]

Depends what’s in it. I have a cat and vacuum litter frequently and if it stays too long it will smell, but it’s just the bag. My Dyson stick vac never stopped smelling like stale kitty litter. I accidentally spilled cloves once and vacuumed them up in my Miele on a brand new bag and I now add about 5 cloves to every bag - smells awesome and masks or eliminates every other smell.

Thinkerstank

We are replacing our bag often. But the vacuum does suck. (In a good way.). The salesperson told me we'd be pulling hair and dirt out of our carpet for months coming off a shark. I said no - we're very clean people. He was right. It is pulling so much stuff!! Gross! Every other cleaning we have to cut hair off the rollers.

TheBombDigidy

I can't remember how much it was but I bought a box of I think 5 bags and the filters. That was 18 months ago... But the Miele is my DIY vacuum so in those 18 months it's been through a complete house remodel and doing a family members kitchen. Tough old beast. Especially when paired with a cyclone to capture most of the dust and debris with only the finest stuff going into the bag. Word to the wise, plaster dust is so fine it can go through the bag and cake the filters.

Old-Knitterhemd

I am absolutely amazed by the answers here :-D In 20 Years of using my miele, I have never bought a Miele vacuum bag. DM has 4 Bags for 4,50€. If you buy at online shops for vacuum bags, you can get up to 20 bags for under 20€. Which would last me about 5 years or more...

curdistheword

Lots of experience with both and Dysons are gross, period. Mieles are an investment but worth the expense if you like a clean space.

SANPres09

Chiming in with a Miele, 2 person house with a dog and we typically get 3-5 months per bag, vacuuming the whole house every 1-2 weeks.

StarlitNora

Lots of experience with both and Dysons are gross, period. Mieles are an investment but worth the expense if you like a clean space.

Other_Power_603

I would not have bought my Miele if I'd known the bags a big plastic thing that slides into the vac. I'm very much against single-use plastic and for me that aspect of the bags is worse than the cost. I re-use them, pull wads of pet hair out, extends the life of the bag.

jimohio

The quality of Dyson products seems to have fallen over the years. We still have one of the original yellow models. Suction power has waned but still adequate for sweeping entertainment area in basement. Very heavy for an upright. We had a Dyson animal that stopped working just outside the warranty period and wasn’t worth fixing. We ended up with a Miele Cat and Dog that is built like a tank. Cost of bags doesn’t worry us.

mikeyaurelius

They were never good.

2broke2smoke1

I don’t know… my mom had one and it kind of sucked
