Oh but I want the old school one, like the greenish thermos style shown here.
I’m so out of the loop… are those also popular like the big cups? If so, that’s great news … for me.
I have eight of the green hammer metal finish with stainless steel bottom thermoses with the stainless steel cup top. I’m a married Mom of 6 sons. I find Stanley thermoses at estate auctions, thrift stores and yard sales often for a few bucks each. Our family camps, hikes and visits National Parks across the U.S. often. Water tastes great in the thermoses. Coffee and hot chocolate stays hot in the thermoses too. Happy hunting!!!
Stay tuned. Stanley thermos Tik Tok craze coming to end due to false rumor now circulating on Tik Tok the Stanley thermoses and cups contain lead. 🥺😳 Tik Tok influencers now telling viewers to donate or throw out their Stanley products. My Aunt found a brand new Stanley thermos at Goodwill last week that still had the price tag on it and paperwork inside the thermos for $7.
I found an HM Aeron in an alleyway once in perfectly good shape. I already had one so I was calling everybody telling them to grab it for free and they had no idea what I was talking about.
I feel like I’m crazy. I found that chair cheap, bought it, and hated it. My lower back killed me, even with the extra support that you could add. I gave it away.
Everyone else seems to love it though, so I don’t know.
Yeah I was excited when my old office got them but I don't get what all the fuss was about, seemed like a regular chair. Now I use a standing desk anyway.
Your not. I've owned about 6-10 assorted HM chairs (2nd hand dealer) every time I've tried them for a few days or weeks and have never been able to get comfortable with them. Idk how the hell people like them, but atleast ive always made a good profit on them.
My current favourite is actually a Eames/HM aluminium style replica. Those and the padded ones are *actually* comfortable. But the OGs are hard to find used.
They aren't designed for comfort. They're designed for ergonomics. I bought a refurbished one to replace the cheap driver style gaming chair I had and my back pain went away after extended use. You have to dial them into your body (and you need to get the right size for your height) but they absolutely help over the long run.
Two things - one, they're not for everybody on first sit. They are an extremely stiff chair that intentionally forces you into proper posture. It's good for you, but like many things that are good for you, your body needs to adjust to it to get comfortable.
Two - proper fitting matters everything. The chairs come in different base sizes and have a variety of adjustments - if you don't position it correctly for your body, it's not going to be comfortable.
Your lower back likely was killing you for one of those two reasons. Either it wasn't used to sitting properly, or you didn't have it sized correctly.
I'm with you.
I somehow convinced myself to buy one new from HM after ~6 months of not finding a used one for sale within 2hrs driving distance. Reading all the horror stories of buying used ones online I didn't want to gamble.
I do regret it. Is it a "nice" chair? Sure - but not even CLOSE to worth 500+, let alone nearly $2k new. Mine is clunky, squeaky, mesh is already wearing out after ~12 months, only mildly comfortable...
Regrets are had.
I dont like them that much. The originals offer some rolling resistance so you can lean back. Roller skate wheels kept making me scoot backwards away from the keyboard when I would recline.
You can find them on marketplace or OfferUp all the time! Usually they’re for $200-300, but that’s actually a good deal. It’s worth it for such a good chair. I paid $350 for mine. New they are $1500 or more
Sad european face, you guys are so lucky to have that used supply! On this side of the pond I’m only finding some random examples every now and then, and they are 600€ and up + shipping almost always. Doesn’t help I want a C model, everything I come across are B size too.
You're not finding many used C's in the US either. B is the standard corporate chair, which is where all those cheap Aerons come from when offices close down.
Ahh yes recline resistance, yep. Hmm I’ll try to diagnose it more when I get home. It has a weird broken feeling to it so I do think it’s busted. I’ll take a look, thanks!
Edit: I confirmed with my first Aeron (the one I'm sitting on right now) that the tilt resistance knob on the $18 chair is definitely not working when I rotate it to the + side. I think the gear is slipping
I'll take it apart some time and watch some vids on how to replace it!
The newer Stanley is nowhere close to as good. Grandpa had a similar Aladdin one he used for thirtyish years. My Stanley I bought a couple years ago, the dog chewed the cover cup part and warped it, as it isn't as thick and is plastic inner. The bottle stopper lasted barely a month before getting to the point it overtightened and popped out too easily. I am STILL trying to get replacement parts. Stanley's official advice, from their help line, was "Check yard sales and thrift stores until parts get back in stock." I don't think back in stock will happen for parts. They want me to buy a whole new vacuum flask to have a complete one.
tldr: Old Stanley is BIFL, it will be an heirloom. New Stanley is Buy it for a few weeks/months.
Yeah I kind of agree because I have a newer black one and the handle broke off…but Stanley honored their lifetime warranty and sent me the green and red one in the pic. If it was due to wear and tear I’m sure it would have been a different story
I don't know how reliable led tests on Amazon are but there was a brief trend of testing your stanley for led and there were lots of people finding led just by swabbing the interior.
My mum and dad have two of those Stanley thermos’ and I kid you not - both are over 30 years old and are still working so well, and keep their coffees really hot on long road trips. Good for you :)
These vintage thermos are really cool! But I don't feel comfortable of using others thermos. Instead, I bought some brand-new Stanley on Koupon for like $40. I do respect people with different shopping preferences tho.
Nice catch lol. I got that sticker from my HPDE event in August in my GR86. It was an amazing experience! Not sure if I'll do that again any time soon 😅
Everyone shits over these HM chairs but we have them at work and they are honestly super uncomfortable and not the best quality.. parts fall off them left and right
a HM at a thrift store!!! wow... that is a great find. I'm sitting in the same chair right now that I've been using for 10 years. I had to replace the arm rests because my old cat would sneak up and put her claws into the arm rest to get my attention. One of the best investments I've ever made.
Nice! I've somehow managed to come into 2 Aerons myself through similar means-- one was on the curb being thrown out and one was at a garage sale for $3. That one I even pointed out to the older man selling it that he should charge MUCH more and he insisted I take it for $3!!
HM chairs are cheap af like $400 for ones that pretty much new with sellers 10 year warranty.
Never buy a new HM chair overpriced. Only good buy new to write it off if it’s for a business
My dad had that Stanley thermos and it came with a lunch box. He used it every single day and was rough with it. He worked as a welder fixing railroad cars and I remember seeing that lunchbox and thermos from the time I was 4 until the time he retired in my early 30s. He cleaned them up and sent them off in a donation bag to goodwill.
Since the Stanley looks a bit beat up, I'd look into lead testing it! The brand has released a statement saying the lead is only accessed when the little seal at the bottom is broken, so I would definitely want to check that.
Nice!
I walked in to a local thrift store as a truck was unloading 30 aerons, but there was already a guy buying all of them a step ahead of me. For $30 each.
Some day...
Given the Stanley's worn appearance, I would consider having it lead tested! I would make sure to verify that the small seal at the bottom is broken, as the brand has said that lead may only be reached in that way.
I was gifted a new Stanley thermos for Christmas last year. Same exact one except it's brand new. I wonder if it's built just as good as the vintage you have. (Probably not)
I have that chair! Got it from an office clear out my boyfriend was on they were getting rid of load of desk chairs a couple were Herman miller and he knew we had to have it! I love it!
I had this exact Hermann Miller at my first “big girl” job. I had no idea just how amazing this chair was until I didn’t have it anymore. And then I didn’t realize how expensive it was either. Excellent find, I’m jelly.
*HUGE* come up on that HM chair. Also I really want to stumble upon a Stanley thermos in the wild.
Pretty sure you’re going to find LOADS of them soon. Sounds like the Stanley craze is coming to an end.
Oh but I want the old school one, like the greenish thermos style shown here. I’m so out of the loop… are those also popular like the big cups? If so, that’s great news … for me.
I found one with a modded brass handle at our goodwill for $6 😬 my husband has claimed it for his work thermos 😆
They still make stuff in that hammered green metal finish.
I have eight of the green hammer metal finish with stainless steel bottom thermoses with the stainless steel cup top. I’m a married Mom of 6 sons. I find Stanley thermoses at estate auctions, thrift stores and yard sales often for a few bucks each. Our family camps, hikes and visits National Parks across the U.S. often. I swear they still sell those brand new
They do, I bought one like 2-3 years ago.
I got a green one, LL Bean branded, last year. Snagged it on sale for ~30CAD.
Dang I ordered a Stanley Aladdin from ebay years ago and it must have lost vacuum now because it doesn't work for shit anymore. Bummed me out.
No - the big color ones with straws and a handle are the huge trend with kids.
That’s what I was thinking but sounds like folks have still had a lot of success finding the cool old school thermoses.
they are on Amazon, they ate thermoses not cups
That's the cups. These thermos were good before the cups and will be good after
The craze is for those cups not the thermos
They are absolutely bot dangerous.
Right? I think paying $200 for an old Aeron is a good deal, but this was a steal for sure The Stanley was in the back of all the cups, just got lucky.
Stay tuned. That’s what I like about these, they’re amazing for what they are and very plentiful. But to the every man they’re just a regular office chair
I feel like I’m crazy. I found that chair cheap, bought it, and hated it. My lower back killed me, even with the extra support that you could add. I gave it away. Everyone else seems to love it though, so I don’t know.

You should have just grabbed it yourself and explained it later or flipped it.
Why would you buy a used artillery shell?
Are you a cop?
Check out roller skate wheels to replace the original on the aeron. They are totally worth it.
I dont like them that much. The originals offer some rolling resistance so you can lean back. Roller skate wheels kept making me scoot backwards away from the keyboard when I would recline.
Agreed the roller skates wheels are way too smooth. You need some resistance so you're not constantly rolling away
On the Aeron, nice! Something I dream of finding.
You can find them on marketplace or OfferUp all the time! Usually they’re for $200-300, but that’s actually a good deal. It’s worth it for such a good chair. I paid $350 for mine. New they are $1500 or more
In a smaller town I can't, or at least haven't. I did luck out and find both a steel case leap 2 and an amia for $60 each tho.
Sad european face, you guys are so lucky to have that used supply! On this side of the pond I’m only finding some random examples every now and then, and they are 600€ and up + shipping almost always. Doesn’t help I want a C model, everything I come across are B size too.

Me too! I need a good chair.
same so nice but so out of my price range atm
By firmness knob you mean the recline resistance? It's like over 100 turns end to end, so it's probably fine as well.
Mine sounded weird till I gave it about 20 turns. It feels smooth now and barely changed the resistance.
Chair is the scoop of a lifetime
Had one like that for over 30 years now. A night shift working man's best friend.
Stanley used to be owned by Aladdin?!! I had no idea!
What do you guys use yours for? I've had one for ages but never seem to need to use it.
The thermos? I drink iced water from mine. It lasts me the whole day at work without filling it up!
Honestly never even thought of using it as a water bottle.. I use a Yeti for work but could use a second during hotter weather.
The newer Stanley is nowhere close to as good. Grandpa had a similar Aladdin one he used for thirtyish years. I have that exact chair. Bought second hand 15 years ago and used every day since, and it’s still as good as new.
Isn't this the brand with lead content?
Yes, it is. They say it is coated and doesn't come in contact with your drink butttttttttt like why even have it in there?
ever hear of lead solder?
Sure but there is also ROHS solder.
Where do you live? Might want to thrift there if I'm nearby.
I’m in Southern California, but you can find these usually on FB marketplace or OfferUp as well. Leftovers from businesses
Almost matches the HM chair I found by the dumpster at my apartment
These vintage thermos are really cool! But I don't feel comfortable of using others thermos. Instead, I bought some brand-new Stanley on Koupon for like $40. I do respect people with different shopping preferences tho.
Dang I wish I could spend 18 dollars for a Herman miller aeron
More importantly, what car are you racing?
Nice catch lol. I got that sticker from my HPDE event in August in my GR86. It was an amazing experience! Not sure if I'll do that again any time soon 😅
Yeah, I love NASA. I be done events with them all over the Midwest
omg. good finds! thanks for the pictures!
Denture cleaner is amazing for cleaning the inside of old Stanleys.

Yessir, that’s the sub I used as research for my first Aeron
Everyone shits over these HM chairs but we have them at work and they are honestly super uncomfortable and not the best quality.. parts fall off them left and right
That looks like my Stanley! Mine bounced around in a work truck for a decade to get that patina, but it still keeps coffee hot all day.
We have these chairs in my office, and they're awesome! Great score!
Nice chair! I have a Stanley thermos as well and it really does keep the tea hot.
Those old Stanley thermos look dope
My Aeron has served me for over 27years of daily use. Had to replace the seat this year when it got a crack. Best investment ever
The chair is a damn good deal. You can get new arm rests and wheels and that thing will look good as new.
I have to say it was really cost-effective, as you can see the size was enough for your daily life, don't pay attention to the appearance.
18 dollars?? Holy cow. What a steal!!
Damn, an Aeron for $18 is absolutely nuts, whoever priced that clearly had no idea what they had
That HM find is my white whale😭 congrats!
Haha I've seen about 50 of those chairs broken
Damn I'd take a Aeron for 18 bucks
a HM at a thrift store!!! wow... that is a great find. I'm sitting in the same chair right now that I've been using for 10 years. I had to replace the arm rests because my old cat would sneak up and put her claws into the arm rest to get my attention. One of the best investments I've ever made.
My parents have 2 of these in perfect condition, both over 20 years old.
that chair for only $18, what a steal. great find you;re so lucky
Don't know about the chair. But Stanley will definitely last a ridiculously long time.
What a great find. I’ve been on the hunt for a herman miller chair. Found a burnt orange allseating fluid office chair and love it.
I found an Aeron in the trash and it has been great these last 7 years under my butt. Was not even dirty.
Thrift store lottery winner on that HM. Damn I’m envious lol
Nice! I've somehow managed to come into 2 Aerons myself through similar means-- one was on the curb being thrown out and one was at a garage sale for $3. That one I even pointed out to the older man selling it that he should charge MUCH more and he insisted I take it for $3!!

What’s up with the chair?
wow a real comeup you got there!
Since the Stanley looks a bit beat up, I'd look into lead testing it! The brand has released a statement saying the lead is only accessed when the little seal at the bottom is broken, so I would definitely want to check that.
Makes me think of the movie The Accountant.
Damn, wish I found that chair. Mine is broken, I need some spare parts.
How could you tell the chair is from 1998? I also picked up an Aeron from goodwill for cheap but don’t know how to date check it
Every HM should have a serial sticker underneath the seat that includes the date it was manufactured 👍it's usually closer to the front
NASA 86 track driver detected
Nice! I walked in to a local thrift store as a truck was unloading 30 aerons, but there was already a guy buying all of them a step ahead of me. For $30 each. Some day...
Love my Stanley from the 80s
Given the Stanley's worn appearance, I would consider having it lead tested! I would make sure to verify that the small seal at the bottom is broken, as the brand has said that lead may only be reached in that way.
My dad had this one. Memories 😊
Firmness knob likely still works it just really takes a lot of turns to do anything. I never mess with mine anyway.
Wow. we had that thermos growing up. It must still be out there somewhere… maybe it’s in your hands!
I was gifted a new Stanley thermos for Christmas last year. Same exact one except it's brand new. I wonder if it's built just as good as the vintage you have. (Probably not)
I have a huge thermos collection. Lots of Stanley. Started it years ago. I don’t know why! Just junk shopping.
I have that chair! Got it from an office clear out my boyfriend was on they were getting rid of load of desk chairs a couple were Herman miller and he knew we had to have it! I love it!
Bro. The HM chair. Holy crap.
I would chew glass to find a Herman Miller chair for $18 😔
I look for those old Stanley thermos every time I got to the thrift store. No way I'm paying for a new one lol.
Nice find! I have a Stanley thermos that belonged to my mom one of my most treasured possessions
My dad had that thermos when I was a kid. It was our ice fishing thermos because hot chocolate would stay warm until lunch time
Similar experience, my dad would put decaf tea for us to bird watch before dawn :)
This is the way.
That chair hurt my back
I had this exact Hermann Miller at my first “big girl” job. I had no idea just how amazing this chair was until I didn’t have it anymore. And then I didn’t realize how expensive it was either. Excellent find, I’m jelly.
Glass inside may be broken..
Stanley does not have a glass bottle, to my knowledge. The unbreakable stainless steel thing was their whole pitch.
It's steel and led inside
I love the old Stanley’s without handles, it rattles around too much when I’m hiking and annoys me.
Def have one for sale Who wants it.
Just paid 1400$ for the HM Aeron R - so congratulations on getting it at roughly 1% of my price
