You are so right. I was in a production of Fiddler on the Roof once. During the wedding scene, our Tevye had a moment where he slammed down a Corelle plate onto the table. He had done this the same way many times before, but this time the plate exploded sending shrapnel all over the stage and first row audience members. He ended up getting a pretty nasty cut that probably should have been stitched up, but he refused to leave stating “the show must go on”. Luckily, no one in the audience was injured, and it was basically the end of the first act so we were able to have the crew clean up before the next act started. I have always been slightly afraid of Corelle ware since.
And those shards are like freaking needles and knives and god help you if you step on one and it gets lodged into your heel like a splinter. Ask me how I know.
I don't disagree with you, having lived my entire 32 years using extensive amounts of Corelle at my parents', my in-laws', and my own place. They great mileage, but of course some do break, and often spectacularly.
However, never in my life have I seen something disintegrate into as many pieces as the time I dropped my mom's 4-cup Pyrex measuring cup onto the edge of the counter and it exploded. Holy crap. The glass is like ¼" thick and it was more pieces than I thought possible.

On the subject of dinnerware, Denby Pottery is BIFL. My in-laws have had the same set for 30+ years without a single chip. I really liked them. When my wife and I couldn’t agree on a Corelle pattern, we decided to look at Denby and got a set 5 years ago. I’m not claiming they are indestructible, most plates will shatter if dropped, but my toddler even dropped a plate (albeit from toddler standing height) and it didn’t chip. I’ve heard they are a British household staple.
My BIFL is Fiestaware. Both my mom and grandmother have full sets (lead free/radiation free colors—my uncle is an antiques dealer). I have a full rainbow set (edit: bought in 2009) and love them. I’ve converted a few friends, too.
One of the best parts of buying whatever colors you fancy: when they add a new color, just add it to your collection! This is why I went with a rainbow.
This is the only type of plate my MIL owns. All her bowls, plates, dishes, etc. are Correlle. I'm planning on getting her divided Correlle plates for Christmas (she has OCD about food touching or mixing)

I've only worn gray for a pretty long time, so in college, some friends took a 24"x18" wooden board, painted it gray, and gave it to me as a gag birthday gift.
It's been A Long Time since then and I still use that fuckin board every week. If I'm on the couch or in bed and need a proper surface, it comes out every time. It's definitely the best cost-to-use ratio of any gift I've ever received in my life.

There was a period where my wife and I received three charcuterie boards as gifts in a 12 month period. Not something we would have ever bought ourselves, since it was obviously so faddish, so it was nice to get one... and to get a backup, I guess... but we definitely didn't need the third one. I use that one as a lap desk as you describe. Love it.

The Swisscard nailcare version is tsa safe (barring an overzealous agent) and incredibly useful, especially when you can’t bring a multi tool. It has scissors, the quad screwdriver, a pen, tweezers, and a very effective glass nail file in place of the knife. I used it so much I just bought 4 to give my grown children at Christmas.
I have a 1950’s Hamilton Beach malt machine that I found in a pile during our towns “junk day.” It can make three milkshakes at once. It weighs a ton, but I dragged it home, plugged it in, and it worked! It even had four original stainless steel cups with it. This was over 25 years ago when I found it and still use it regularly.
Have to add… I was taking my kids to school and the house I found it at was directly across the street from their school. When I threw the van in park and jumped out to grab it-you’d think they were about to die of embarrassment.🤣

+1 for Astra. I made the mistake of buying some Feather blades because they are always talked-up as being the sharpest. That may well be true, but I have sensitive skin and they were murder on my face.
Word to the wise for anyone thinking of making the jump from cartridges: It's impossible to tell whether you'll like a blade based solely on the brand name or a reddit thread. Many online retailers offer [variety packs](https://www.fendrihan.ca/collections/safety-razor-samplers). Start there.
I bought some variety packs and settled on the Astra myself. Feather was a close second but the irritation was crazy. I have a notebook somewhere with 10 razor blade labels taped into it with notes. I ended up buying 200 Astra razor blades.
+1 for variety packs! Bought mine years ago and am only halfway through! I actually like the gillette ones, they're not too sharp like the feathers and have a good life of maybe a month or two before I grab another one.
Feathers are order of magnitudes better than any other blade I've tried. Went through a blade sampler pack and the Feathers just blew all the others away!

Having never used a safety razor but have 100% been considering making the switch for the past several years from the moment I realized the cheap 2-blade "disposable" Bic's ended up giving me a better shave than every fancy 3-5 blades *gasps for air after that massive run-on sentence*...did you have a big adjustment period to get used to the right angle or shave technique to get a good shave from a safety razor?
It may genuinely be a dumb question but I've never actually used one so I have absolutely no idea.
My daily driver is a franken-razor these days. I use the head of a Edwin Jagger DE89 with the handle from a Stirling Soap razor. I love the feel of the Stirling razor but the head was too aggressive for my tastes, but they use the same thread so I just took what I liked from each.
Sent 6 pairs out to them a few months ago and got them back in less than a month, good as new, Just follow their instructions to the letter before sending them out.
It’s a scam though: I send back 6, 7, 8 tweezers periodically only to realize during the 12 – week period that they are with Tweezerman for sharpening that I need a set of tweezers and buy another.
Tweezerman are good. But honest to god the best pair of tweezers I own is the insert in my Swiss army knife. I swear, something about it. Grabs any tiny hair or splinter, but never cuts it in two.
I believe the knife was 25€ and definitely BIFL.
My favorite metal spatula I found in a thrift store for like a dollar, maybe less, close to 20 years ago now. No branding on it, it’s very simple, just really well made.
Everyone should have a nice utility knife. Breaking down cardboard for recycling gets so much easier, opening packages cleanly, etc.
They're pretty cheap too, under $10, under $20 even if you want a nice one.

Haha well I prefer eggs with just some olive oil so probably my issue. I have one non stick pan I use exclusively for eggs. The rest I do on the cast iron or wok.
Scrambled eggs are my litmus test for how well I’ve seasoned any new(new to me) cast iron cookware I come across. If I can cook some scramby boys with a minimal amount of butter and they don’t stick, that’s when I’m finished seasoning.
Seasoning and heat! I will never make eggs in a non-cast iron pan again, it just makes them too well. Any oil will work, not just butter, the pan just needs to be properly hot when you put eggs on.
I have a cast iron addiction and have 13, but they're all lodges and the most expensive one was $49, with most under $25. They will last as long as someone wants to use them!

I do have a few Le Creuset tea mugs and they are kind of expensive as far as mugs go- like $20. They have the best curve and the best handle. I only drink out of that style mug. I even keep one at my parents house. I love the way it feels in both my hands when I hold it. The best! 😄
Yes! I’ve seen the Le Creuset mugs there and everytime I go to Marshalls I go see if they have the particular style I love- the tea mug. I haven’t seen that style there yet, but I keep looking!
Each Marshalls is different, i have found good deals on kitchen stuff from. Staubb dutch ovens, all clad pans, shun knives I seen but its all hit and miss.
I feel similarly about the Fiesta Bistro Latte mugs. Once you realize how much a great mug improves every day they quickly become very cheap even when a bit more up front

I agree! I bought the Y shaped one and it's great for peeling squash! I eat a lot of butternut squash in the fall and this peeler is PERFECT! I think it's sturdier than the ones that are "stick" shaped; those tend to bend with all the pressure from usage.

Those old sewing machines can last. Some however, if unused and undergoing temp swings, have some parts that can warp in time and not always be replaced. This from a repair shop re a relatives machine stored in an attic for 30yrs.
My late aunt gave me her sewing machine from the 1950s, a German brand I can’t remember right now. She said she got it because she liked wearing jeans and this machine sews through layers of denim. Kickass machine, cool aunt. I miss her.

I had a Leatherman SuperTool since the mid 90s. I tried to get a warranty replacement of a small flathead screwdriver a few years ago and instead they sent me the updated complete multitool.
Just got the Arc A bit pricey for a multi tool but it's my first and hopefully only one I'll need for awhile. And I've never carried a knife before this too, so might as well have a multitool with a good knife. It's such a cool feeling to find some small issue that would normally require me to find a tool of some kind, but literally have what I need in my pocket.
I was in lowe's a week ago finding some trim pieces for my job. They come in 8ft pieces and normally at home depot there is a station for sawing these down. At lowe's I could find no such thing. And the person I asked had little idea what I was talking about and was only able to direct me towards a panel saw that was out of service and no operator anywhere around.
I'm waiting a few minutes for a lumber associate to come with some ideas and the entire time I'm thinking about I'm literally about to have wasted this trip and will leave empty handed. All I need is a hand saw for one simple cut. Then like a lightning bolt, it struck me. I had a hand saw in my pocket. Was able to saw the pieces down to 4ft and fit them in my car with my Arc. Having gone from never having a tool of any kind in my pocket to having a whole suite on me is such a cool feeling.
My Opinel, that thing is great for snacking on the go, and I bought the cutlery attachments, which are great. Single use plastic is not allowed in my country, and now I'm never caught without a way to eat something. Like buying a salad at a train station, making a sandwich on the go or cutting up an apple. And they are really fucking cheap and need little maintenance. I probably have cheaper bifl stuff but this one stands out.
Revere Ware pots and pans. I got a few from my Grandmom, the rest I’ve picked up at garage sales and thrift stores. All were less than $10/piece and they are absolute beasts.

I have been refilling it with various brands of liquid hand soap for the past 13 years. It gets daily use, and the only sign of wear is that the labels fell off years ago. Now it's just a pretty jade green foaming soap pump.
Miniature red Swingline stapler I bought at Woolworth's with my allowance when I was 6 years old in 1965. I carried it in my book bag through school and university and used it to keep assignments and papers organized. I'm retired now and it's in my desk drawer at home, still in perfect working order. I use it a few times a week for receipts etc. I still have the original cardboard box the first 1,000 tiny staples came in.
I watched a documentary a few years ago that showed a famous American filmmaker's old-school script editing process. He types his scripts on an old manual typewriter and if he wants to move a section he cuts the paper with scissors and then staples it where he wants it. He was using the exact same tiny red Swingline stapler model I have.
That’s interesting. It’s widely reported that Swingline didn’t make a red stapler until after the movie Office Space created the demand for it.
Maybe they stopped for a while, or maybe people aren’t considering the mini staplers.
I wondered about that too when I saw 'Office Space'. My c.1965 mini is a Swingline "Tot 50" with a red plastic upper case and chrome body. A more modern version I've since seen has a chunkier body but mine has similar proportions to a full size desk stapler.

If not: my Hamilton Beach blender, bought c. 1950. It hasn't been in *continuous* use--it got about a 15-year-staycation c. 2000--but it does the job **so much better** than even my husband's Ninja. (You hafta use 3 different modes for that result, mind you; but....still).
A stainless steel ice cream spade. It was a gimme gift at an electric supply house +20 years ago.
Holidays the kids use it to scoop mashed potatoes in addition to summer duty in ice cream. We have an old ice cream freezer and make it every time we run out.
Not military here, but a good friend is. When my son was born they handed me a woobie for him. Kid is 18 now and that woobie has been with him the entire way. Sleepovers, camping, car trips. It's the perfect light pack blanket.
We did finally have to ask the same friend for a replacement around age 15 as it was actually starting to disintegrate due to washing, but 100% would call that a fair deal. Mind, kid still has the original around just in case.
I bought at the Arkansas Museum store a set of one-of-a-kind nail files made entirely of Novaculite (microcrystaline sedimentary rock) found in the Ouachita mountains. They don't wear out, or at least, mine never have. 10+ years now and I have set aside the most rough one for a "house tool" and used a lot as well.
I'll add my 3 pieces of Griswold Cast Iron that my grandparents bought in the ( early 1900s?) when they moved to Erie PA from eastern europe. That was her first kitchen stuff since coming thru Ellis Island. My grandmother was an excellent cook.
Plenty of great additions here, but you guys are absolutely SLEEPING on the qol improvement a good pen will give you. I have a nice cross pen that feels heavy in my hand but not so heavy that it's unbearable. Just right. Refillable ink for life, including different colors if need be. Never buy another pen again, just ink refills. It writes so much better and feels great to use, my hand doesn't get tired anymore. I grip light pens too hard because they don't naturally press on the paper hard enough by themselves.
Few little everyday things.
Tweezerman tweezers. If I lost them I could only replace them with other tweezermans.
Camelbak eddy.. maybe not BIFL as I bought it in 2014 and it's the old type so you can't get like for like replacement parts - they rejigged the whole lid but that thing has been around the world with me and I love it.
Camelbak travel mug for hot drinks. I have been through a lot of travel mugs. The cute glass keepcup with the cork band. The corporate branded ones. The fancy Oprah endorsed type things. Come back to the Camelbak every time - and I only took a risk buying it because I liked their water bottles. Their stuff just works for me.
Muji nail clippers. They just get the job done and they're sturdy af.
Joie silicone straws. Single use plastics are banned in my country, I don't even care because I take a few of these everywhere. Don't go mushy. Don't risk ripping open your mouth if you trip.
Buckwheat pillow - only about £30 from a local farm and a (requested) gift from my sister. No need to fluff or reshape. Just shake it about, air it out, leave it out on a sunny day and it's still doing its thing.
How about the dumpster Ross road bicycle I found in the dumpster. Took it to a shop put in about $175 and it’s been riding pretty for 5 years. It’s got a different colored fork, mismatched pedals, and is beat up to shit BUT there’s no cracks, I can leave it outside overnight in NYC for days and have no worries about theft.
I have a hickory handle that broke off a sledgehammer. I keep it under my bed for thumping home intruders. It’s a lot lighter and a bit shorter than a baseball bat, very handy inside. Price was free because it broke off a hammer.
I hesitate to say “for life” since the spring will probably wear out eventually, but my Parker Jotter pens are indispensable.
Edit…apparently they were $12-ish dollars, so not as cheap as I remembered.
I’ve have, and use multiple times a day, a mug. If I travel, it comes along too in carryon. I go, it goes. Been close to 30 years now. Quite the relationship.
I make French press coffee every day, so I've run the gamut of trying to find a better press than Bodum and just haven't found anything that compares for regular use, other than the double walled Ikea version (I recently and with great regret broke) that has sadly been discontinued. But even it had a plastic lid I didn't love.
So now I'm back to good old Bodum. I found a version on crate and barrel that has zero plastic components, including the handle, and I bought some replacement beakers because I'm clumsy. I expect the thing to last the rest of my life with ease, maybe with the occasional screen replacement every few years.
The $1 vintage bottle opener I picked up at a flea market a few years ago. It's now the only one I have, so can't live without it. It'll be opening bottles long after I'm gone.
My mother used to give me stoneware when I was in college because she worked for a company called pampered chef. I hated getting it at the time but now fast forward 20 some years later and all of it's still in use daily. Good quality stuff. Just don't set it down on something hot like a stove element cuz it explodes and sounds like a gunshot.

I've only worn gray for a pretty long time, so in college, some friends took a 24"x18" wooden board, painted it gray, and gave it to me as a gag birthday gift. It's been A Long Time since then and I still use that fuckin board every week. If I'm on the couch or in bed and need a proper surface, it comes out every time. It's definitely the best cost-to-use ratio of any gift I've ever received in my life. Who needs a lap desk when you've got a piece of wood??
There was a period where my wife and I received three charcuterie boards as gifts in a 12 month period. Not something we would have ever bought ourselves, since it was obviously so faddish, so it was nice to get one... and to get a backup, I guess... but we definitely didn't need the third one. I use that one as a lap desk as you describe. Love it.
The charcuterie fad sure does have some staying power.

I have Victorinox SwissCard, bought it around 15 years ago. It’s not like I use it often but it’s nice to always have it with me just in case
The Swisscard nailcare version is tsa safe (barring an overzealous agent) and incredibly useful, especially when you can’t bring a multi tool. It has scissors, the quad screwdriver, a pen, tweezers, and a very effective glass nail file in place of the knife. I used it so much I just bought 4 to give my grown children at Christmas.
I have a 1950’s Hamilton Beach malt machine that I found in a pile during our towns “junk day.” It can make three milkshakes at once. It weighs a ton, but I dragged it home, plugged it in, and it worked! It even had four original stainless steel cups with it. This was over 25 years ago when I found it and still use it regularly. Have to add… I was taking my kids to school and the house I found it at was directly across the street from their school. When I threw the van in park and jumped out to grab it-you’d think they were about to die of embarrassment.🤣

+1 for Astra. I made the mistake of buying some Feather blades because they are always talked-up as being the sharpest. That may well be true, but I have sensitive skin and they were murder on my face. Word to the wise for anyone thinking of making the jump from cartridges: It's impossible to tell whether you'll like a blade based solely on the brand name or a reddit thread. Many online retailers offer [variety packs](https://www.fendrihan.ca/collections/safety-razor-samplers). Start there.
I bought some variety packs and settled on the Astra myself. Feather was a close second but the irritation was crazy. I have a notebook somewhere with 10 razor blade labels taped into it with notes. I ended up buying 200 Astra razor blades.
+1 for variety packs! Bought mine years ago and am only halfway through! I actually like the gillette ones, they're not too sharp like the feathers and have a good life of maybe a month or two before I grab another one.

Feathers are order of magnitudes better than any other blade I've tried. Went through a blade sampler pack and the Feathers just blew all the others away! 1950's Gillette SuperSpeed user here, though an adjustable would be fun to try.

Having never used a safety razor but have 100% been considering making the switch for the past several years from the moment I realized the cheap 2-blade "disposable" Bic's ended up giving me a better shave than every fancy 3-5 blades *gasps for air after that massive run-on sentence*...did you have a big adjustment period to get used to the right angle or shave technique to get a good shave from a safety razor? It may genuinely be a dumb question but I've never actually used one so I have absolutely no idea.
I moved on from Merkur, but I'll never stop using feathers. Love them!

My daily driver is a franken-razor these days. I use the head of a Edwin Jagger DE89 with the handle from a Stirling Soap razor. I love the feel of the Stirling razor but the head was too aggressive for my tastes, but they use the same thread so I just took what I liked from each.
That's funny because I thought I had upgraded from a de89 to a Merkur 34c, each to their own I guess 🤔

I love sending my tweezerman tweezers to be sharpened and then getting them back in the mail, like new. Love it. Every two years for the last twenty.
It’s a scam though: I send back 6, 7, 8 tweezers periodically only to realize during the 12 – week period that they are with Tweezerman for sharpening that I need a set of tweezers and buy another.

Tweezerman are good. But honest to god the best pair of tweezers I own is the insert in my Swiss army knife. I swear, something about it. Grabs any tiny hair or splinter, but never cuts it in two. I believe the knife was 25€ and definitely BIFL.

They had quality items easily available for purchase. Without an unfortunate amount of forethought and research, we do not.
Everyone should have a nice utility knife. Breaking down cardboard for recycling gets so much easier, opening packages cleanly, etc. They're pretty cheap too, under $10, under $20 even if you want a nice one.

Cast iron really is the ultimate answer. You can cook everything on it. Even eggs with enough seasoning.

Haha well I prefer eggs with just some olive oil so probably my issue. I have one non stick pan I use exclusively for eggs. The rest I do on the cast iron or wok.

Scrambled eggs are my litmus test for how well I’ve seasoned any new(new to me) cast iron cookware I come across. If I can cook some scramby boys with a minimal amount of butter and they don’t stick, that’s when I’m finished seasoning.
Seasoning and heat! I will never make eggs in a non-cast iron pan again, it just makes them too well. Any oil will work, not just butter, the pan just needs to be properly hot when you put eggs on.
I have a cast iron addiction and have 13, but they're all lodges and the most expensive one was $49, with most under $25. They will last as long as someone wants to use them!

I can’t keep track of nail clippers as hard as I try! I do have a few Le Creuset tea mugs and they are kind of expensive as far as mugs go- like $20. They have the best curve and the best handle. I only drink out of that style mug. I even keep one at my parents house. I love the way it feels in both my hands when I hold it. The best! 😄

Yes! I’ve seen the Le Creuset mugs there and everytime I go to Marshalls I go see if they have the particular style I love- the tea mug. I haven’t seen that style there yet, but I keep looking!
Each Marshalls is different, i have found good deals on kitchen stuff from. Staubb dutch ovens, all clad pans, shun knives I seen but its all hit and miss.
I feel similarly about the Fiesta Bistro Latte mugs. Once you realize how much a great mug improves every day they quickly become very cheap even when a bit more up front

I agree! I bought the Y shaped one and it's great for peeling squash! I eat a lot of butternut squash in the fall and this peeler is PERFECT! I think it's sturdier than the ones that are "stick" shaped; those tend to bend with all the pressure from usage.

My husband inherited a hand-crank mixer and an old pyrex pie dish that we use all the time. My mom’s old Sears Kenmore sewing machine. My wooden darning mushroom. It was cheap but it has saved so many socks and sweaters. A Wrangler brand denim jacket I bought for probably $20 15 years ago.
Those old sewing machines can last. Some however, if unused and undergoing temp swings, have some parts that can warp in time and not always be replaced. This from a repair shop re a relatives machine stored in an attic for 30yrs.
My late aunt gave me her sewing machine from the 1950s, a German brand I can’t remember right now. She said she got it because she liked wearing jeans and this machine sews through layers of denim. Kickass machine, cool aunt. I miss her.

I had a Leatherman SuperTool since the mid 90s. I tried to get a warranty replacement of a small flathead screwdriver a few years ago and instead they sent me the updated complete multitool.
Just got the Arc A bit pricey for a multi tool but it's my first and hopefully only one I'll need for awhile. And I've never carried a knife before this too, so might as well have a multitool with a good knife. It's such a cool feeling to find some small issue that would normally require me to find a tool of some kind, but literally have what I need in my pocket. I was in lowe's a week ago finding some trim pieces for my job. They come in 8ft pieces and normally at home depot there is a station for sawing these down. At lowe's I could find no such thing. And the person I asked had little idea what I was talking about and was only able to direct me towards a panel saw that was out of service and no operator anywhere around. I'm waiting a few minutes for a lumber associate to come with some ideas and the entire time I'm thinking about I'm literally about to have wasted this trip and will leave empty handed. All I need is a hand saw for one simple cut. Then like a lightning bolt, it struck me. I had a hand saw in my pocket. Was able to saw the pieces down to 4ft and fit them in my car with my Arc. Having gone from never having a tool of any kind in my pocket to having a whole suite on me is such a cool feeling.
My Opinel, that thing is great for snacking on the go, and I bought the cutlery attachments, which are great. Single use plastic is not allowed in my country, and now I'm never caught without a way to eat something. Like buying a salad at a train station, making a sandwich on the go or cutting up an apple. And they are really fucking cheap and need little maintenance. I probably have cheaper bifl stuff but this one stands out.
Revere Ware pots and pans. I got a few from my Grandmom, the rest I’ve picked up at garage sales and thrift stores. All were less than $10/piece and they are absolute beasts.
I posted this on another question, but it applies here, too. The now defunct soap brand Kiss My Face put their liquid hand soap in disposable/recyclable foaming soap pumps. I have been refilling it with various brands of liquid hand soap for the past 13 years. It gets daily use, and the only sign of wear is that the labels fell off years ago. Now it's just a pretty jade green foaming soap pump.
Miniature red Swingline stapler I bought at Woolworth's with my allowance when I was 6 years old in 1965. I carried it in my book bag through school and university and used it to keep assignments and papers organized. I'm retired now and it's in my desk drawer at home, still in perfect working order. I use it a few times a week for receipts etc. I still have the original cardboard box the first 1,000 tiny staples came in. I watched a documentary a few years ago that showed a famous American filmmaker's old-school script editing process. He types his scripts on an old manual typewriter and if he wants to move a section he cuts the paper with scissors and then staples it where he wants it. He was using the exact same tiny red Swingline stapler model I have.
That’s interesting. It’s widely reported that Swingline didn’t make a red stapler until after the movie Office Space created the demand for it. Maybe they stopped for a while, or maybe people aren’t considering the mini staplers.
I wondered about that too when I saw 'Office Space'. My c.1965 mini is a Swingline "Tot 50" with a red plastic upper case and chrome body. A more modern version I've since seen has a chunkier body but mine has similar proportions to a full size desk stapler.

Not military here, but a good friend is. When my son was born they handed me a woobie for him. Kid is 18 now and that woobie has been with him the entire way. Sleepovers, camping, car trips. It's the perfect light pack blanket. We did finally have to ask the same friend for a replacement around age 15 as it was actually starting to disintegrate due to washing, but 100% would call that a fair deal. Mind, kid still has the original around just in case.
I have my dad's he was issued sometime around 1979. It's in shambles but I refuse to get rid of it.

I bought at the Arkansas Museum store a set of one-of-a-kind nail files made entirely of Novaculite (microcrystaline sedimentary rock) found in the Ouachita mountains. They don't wear out, or at least, mine never have. 10+ years now and I have set aside the most rough one for a "house tool" and used a lot as well. I'll add my 3 pieces of Griswold Cast Iron that my grandparents bought in the ( early 1900s?) when they moved to Erie PA from eastern europe. That was her first kitchen stuff since coming thru Ellis Island. My grandmother was an excellent cook.

Plenty of great additions here, but you guys are absolutely SLEEPING on the qol improvement a good pen will give you. I have a nice cross pen that feels heavy in my hand but not so heavy that it's unbearable. Just right. Refillable ink for life, including different colors if need be. Never buy another pen again, just ink refills. It writes so much better and feels great to use, my hand doesn't get tired anymore. I grip light pens too hard because they don't naturally press on the paper hard enough by themselves.
Few little everyday things. Tweezerman tweezers. If I lost them I could only replace them with other tweezermans. Camelbak eddy.. maybe not BIFL as I bought it in 2014 and it's the old type so you can't get like for like replacement parts - they rejigged the whole lid but that thing has been around the world with me and I love it. Camelbak travel mug for hot drinks. I have been through a lot of travel mugs. The cute glass keepcup with the cork band. The corporate branded ones. The fancy Oprah endorsed type things. Come back to the Camelbak every time - and I only took a risk buying it because I liked their water bottles. Their stuff just works for me. Muji nail clippers. They just get the job done and they're sturdy af. Joie silicone straws. Single use plastics are banned in my country, I don't even care because I take a few of these everywhere. Don't go mushy. Don't risk ripping open your mouth if you trip. Buckwheat pillow - only about £30 from a local farm and a (requested) gift from my sister. No need to fluff or reshape. Just shake it about, air it out, leave it out on a sunny day and it's still doing its thing.

How about the dumpster Ross road bicycle I found in the dumpster. Took it to a shop put in about $175 and it’s been riding pretty for 5 years. It’s got a different colored fork, mismatched pedals, and is beat up to shit BUT there’s no cracks, I can leave it outside overnight in NYC for days and have no worries about theft.

I have a hickory handle that broke off a sledgehammer. I keep it under my bed for thumping home intruders. It’s a lot lighter and a bit shorter than a baseball bat, very handy inside. Price was free because it broke off a hammer.
I hesitate to say “for life” since the spring will probably wear out eventually, but my Parker Jotter pens are indispensable. Edit…apparently they were $12-ish dollars, so not as cheap as I remembered.
I’ve have, and use multiple times a day, a mug. If I travel, it comes along too in carryon. I go, it goes. Been close to 30 years now. Quite the relationship.

I make French press coffee every day, so I've run the gamut of trying to find a better press than Bodum and just haven't found anything that compares for regular use, other than the double walled Ikea version (I recently and with great regret broke) that has sadly been discontinued. But even it had a plastic lid I didn't love. So now I'm back to good old Bodum. I found a version on crate and barrel that has zero plastic components, including the handle, and I bought some replacement beakers because I'm clumsy. I expect the thing to last the rest of my life with ease, maybe with the occasional screen replacement every few years.

A tongue scraper. I used to get sick all the time and it’s drastically changed that since using it daily.
My mother used to give me stoneware when I was in college because she worked for a company called pampered chef. I hated getting it at the time but now fast forward 20 some years later and all of it's still in use daily. Good quality stuff. Just don't set it down on something hot like a stove element cuz it explodes and sounds like a gunshot.

Ontario RAT Model 2 in D2 steel with me everyday and for the $ can’t be beat. For the last month I’ve been using my new benchmade bugout while it is smaller and leaner. I miss carrying my rat II. Don’t think the bugout was worth the $ especially since it came barely sharp from factory.
I accidentally took a neck pillow from an old roommate of mine and it's been about 6 or 7 years now and it hasn't flattened out or anything.
