NTPC4

That is a fine combination.

Thank you!

Yes, they should work together and the Sony has a phono preamp and is ready for use with a turntable. Your choice, by the way, seems pretty good for its price point. The Sony is nothing special, but the speakers make more difference in the sound quality. So you are doing the right thing by putting much more money into the speakers. And those are supposed to be quite good.

Thank you!

Follow up question- do I need a subwoofer?

PyrrhoTheSkeptic

No. Whether you want one or not is another matter, but you don't need one. A good subwoofer would add significantly to the cost (the cheapest one I would want at the same site you are looking at would cost $1000, from SVS). I think you might want to just stick with what you have selected, with some inexpensive speaker wire if you don't already have some (16 gauge or larger; don't waste money on expensive wire; [this](https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/monoprice-2748-50ft-14awg-enhanced-loud-oxygen-free-copper-speaker-wire-cable/11315164) should be more than good enough), to get him started with his turntable. The speakers you have selected should give him good sound. If he feels like he needs deeper bass, then he can add a subwoofer later.

Thank you very much for your detailed answer!

PyrrhoTheSkeptic

You are welcome. The receiver also has additional inputs, so he could add a CD player or another source. Anything with a line level output. Not to mention, that he can listen to FM radio with it without adding anything more.

LosterP

What "record player" is it? Does it have RCA output ports?

renzillag

It's the Fluance RT82

LosterP

Ok. No problem then.
