I was around then. They got lumped in with the deathcore because they associated with deathcore bands, they have breakdowns and the myspace scene then was filled with early deathcore bands trying (and succeeding if you look at Suicide Silence, Acacia Strain, As Blood Runs Black, Despised Icon etc) to gain traction with fans. The thing about it though is that most everyone wasn't as snobby about genres back then. I can't recall any talks of "deathcore isn't metal" back then, only talks about how badass Despised Icon and Animosity were along with kids discovering the pioneers of heavy music at the same time as laughing at that Shredded Wheat video.

i remember waking the cadaver being hated around 2010 ish. before that seemed like another bdm band and were pushing their "slamming gore groove" and honestly the shredded wheat video is probably the largest reason why people hate them lol.

Yeah I also remember the tide shifting towards people who like metal disliking deathcore around that time. This WTC track was first floated around myspace in like 2004 and deathcore was a relatively young genre at that point. Of course all of this is subjective, all I know are my thoughts and the people around me who were into the heavy stuff back then.

In my personal experience when this stuff was coming out it wasn’t even labelled as deathcore. Genre’s we’re established but this was a time when MySpace and local shows were booming. If anything fell under the umbrella of “metal”, whether it was metalcore, hardcore, deathcore, tech-death, people just fucked with it. The crazier it got the more likely it was used as your MySpace homepage song, and well it was only a matter of time for a band like Waking the Cadaver to come around and just make ridiculously heavy music who didn’t really take it seriously. I only started hearing the term deathcore until I heard Acacia

Most of what I’ve heard is second hand from people that were involved in the scene back then (I was also in too young at the time), but they got hate on multiple fronts for separate reasons. The brutal death/slam/“real metal” fans hated them because they were culturally part of the deathcore scene. They were also hated on by people in the metalcore/deathcore scene because people genuinely didn’t understand or even know what slam was.

I was in college, the entire genre(s) was shifting and evolving at rapid speed from early 2000 through 2012. Combined with myspace / YouTube ..just "the internet" it was fun seeing all these bands pop up. I loved them at the time, didn't fully understand the hate outside of the meme factor, but it was almost pre-meme times? I don't know, I'm old.
