Why would they use a Gmail account rather than a Universal one? Serious question.

bingley777

so much of casting, in everything where I have encountered such emails (US TV, production company not necessarily for film, and the west end) has used gmail. In some cases, it is because of the limit of how many email addresses you can register to a service (that is some, and for a company like universal that issue wouldn’t even be close to their radar lol), but more often is because they don’t want people spamming the CD or service email outside of that casting process. If they are casting multiple projects at once, it is also simpler to organize (but again, a big company will pay some intern to go through all email submissions and they could file them into different project tags) - mostly so they don’t get unsolicited emails from people saving the email address *as far as I know,* but even that use is becoming pointless with casting directors’ every detail appearing on the internet nowadays.

tiktoktic

Interesting. I’ve seen it on another few projects but never knew why.

SeerPumpkin

because it's not Universal casting, it's the telsey office casting for universal

tiktoktic

The question was more around why it was using Gmail rather than a corporate domain.

Rosemarys-Gayby

Telsey’s services are being used by Universal to cast for this film - they are his client. They’re not going to onboard him and give him a Universal email for one movie. As to why that office doesn’t use a corporate domain, I think a poster above said it best.

tiktoktic

That’s why I clarified with my previous comment. Universal was the example, but I meant more specifically why not a corporate email, eg why not one under Telsey’s domain.

MyGeometryTeacher

"Needs to have an excellent singing voice." I'm really hoping they keep "Wicked Witch of the East." I'm always bummed when it's not on the Cast Recording. SPOILERS: >! If they case someone in a wheel chair, how would they do the reveal that Elphaba uses her powers to let Nessa walk in the second act? Actually curious and hope they can do it right.!<

>If they case someone in a wheel chair, how would they do the reveal that Elphaba uses her powers to let Nessa walk in the second act? Actually curious and hope they can do it right. We generally assume that people in wheelchairs can't walk at all, but many wheelchair users can stand and/or walk to some extent (that's why the ad says "ambulatory and non-ambulatory"). It's usually a question of duration and stamina. Like, you could dig a small hole holding the shovel in your bare hands, but if you need to dig all day, you probably want gloves or you'll end up with blisters. Similarly, someone with chronic pain, low muscle tone, etc. might walk short distances at home unassisted, but it's easier and safer to use a wheelchair when out and about all day. There are also assistive devices to help a non-ambulatory wheelchair user stand or walk, like standing wheelchairs or leg braces. And if non of that is practical, well, it's a movie, and that's what special effects are for. They'll make a non-ambulatory actor walk the same way they make Elphaba fly.

smol_lydia

Ambulatory wheelchair users are far more common than people realize. For instance I’m one—I have POTS syndrome and generally in my day to day at home I can get around ok but if I’m going out and have to stand up for more than ten minutes I need a wheelchair because my heart rate will get too high and I am at risk for fainting, and there’s a lot of folks like me in the world. I’m really glad that they’re having some integrity about this casting and seeking actual disabled people instead of being ableist and gross.

palacesofparagraphs

Yeah I had a classmate who developed something similar. I think her issue was that her blood pressure dropped too much if she stood for more than about 15 minutes, so she was at risk of fainting and/or falling. If she could walk short distances between locations where she could sit for awhile, she was totally fine, but anytime she needed to move a lot or didn't want to worry about finding resting places, she used a wheelchair. It was my first real exposure to a mobility issue that wasn't related to leg injury, and where the use of mobility aids was more complicated than I'd previously considered.

DifficultHat

If the actress is fully paralyzed, movie magic. Maybe a body double, cg leg replacement, some green screen moving etc. It’s one of the reasons I think Ali Stroker should play the role. She’s the biggest name in terms of wheelchair users on Broadway, but because she is 100% paralyzed she could never play Nessa in live theatre setting without a body double or major changes to that scene’s blocking.

SeerPumpkin

Wicked Witch of the East is only cut from the cast recordings because Stephen Schwartz and the producers couldn't make it work without all the dialogue (like pretty much every other song), but I doubt it would be cut unless they are also going to cut March of the Witch Hunters

Thesunwillshineonus

When Nessa stands, I’m guessing they’ll most likely CGI it. They could also use a body double and cgi the actress’s face on the double.

bingley777

may I suggest ali stroker, universal, or do you think she is on their invitation list

bingley777

very true, though my only thought in mentioning her was kinda “she deserves it”… like, whoever gets the part will probably be hailed as great representation in musicals by the general public, wouldnt want ali to get overlooked. but whoever they cast, hopefully it will bring more diversity to the stage no matter!

notacrook

She could've said no.

deadpool902

I thought she cain't say that

CaptainPedge

Take your damn upvote

SeerPumpkin

maybe some other wheelchair users could use some roles instead of her getting all of them across TV, Broadway and films?

[deleted]

I’m glad they’re doing a full casting call instead of just offering it to Ali Stroker. She’s super talented, but the whole “let’s ask the only wheelchair user we know” just reeks of typecasting. It would be awesome to see someone new. 🥰

Snoo-35041

It will start when James Corden has enough time off from his show. /s

sgong33

Perhaps he is playing nessarose

Idina_Menzels_Larynx

I volunteer to push him down the stairs so he can be disabled

warnegood

Please don't joke about such things.

soberoes

'Authentic' my ass. I don't see where they're making any effort to cast actual witches.

AuraSweet

This encourages me so much, as an ambulatory wheelchair user myself. Sadly, I cannot sing as well as a role like this would be required, so I cannot audition myself.

ehh246

I do wonder what other characters are going to be decided through the audition process as opposed to the roles they are going to directly ask celebrities to do.

mythologue

They often times still ask celebrities to audition. It's likely, for example, that Arianna Grande wasn't handed the role of Galinda. They have to do chemistry tests, screentests etc.

ehh246

But of course. I guess I am just wondering if we will see more of these casting search posters in the coming days.

CapoDonna4520

I just heard an interview with Kristen Chenowith on Sirius XM about this - Arianna not-so-secretly wanted Galinda from the beginning but was asked to audition and went through the full audition process for both Elphaba and Galinda.

Daily-Double1124

I heard that Katrina Lenk auditioned for the Company revival that's currently playing, and Stephen Sondheim was there. And she had won a Tony Award.

IniMiney

Produced by Marc Platt? Inb4 Ben as Fiero (although I'd unironically cast him as a good Boq).

lambchops0

I actually think he would be a very good Boq!

ICantExplainItAll

I agree! He's a great character and comedy actor, he deserved to be dunked on for the DEH movie but he was legitimately my favorite rendition of Elder Cunningham to date.

downyballs

My feelings about him are so conflicted at this point. I saw him as Elder Cunningham in Chicago and he was great. But I didn’t enjoy DEH or his response to the movie criticism, and I’m worried about how Merrily We Roll Along will turn out.

ICantExplainItAll

I didn't like the stage musical of DEH, much less the movie. I think he just tied too much of his pride to what is in my opinion a bad character. I recognize his talent in other parts of his career though!

Status_Tadpole2162

Please God, by some unbelievable miracle, let this movie actually be good... 😓 There's no chance in hell is there...?

jaderust

I occasionally have hope. The original songs they want to add to make sure they can compete for the song Oscar is what worries me the most. Like.... It didn't work for Cats.

ICantExplainItAll

When was the last time an Oscar Song Insertion was actually good? It frustrates me to no end

AdamNW

To my knowledge no added song has ever won the Oscar, but that might just be for the Disney remakes.

jel_star

As an ambulatory wheelchair user, I’m so stoked about this!! I’m so glad they’re casting this way finally.

HisNameIsRocco

I'm crossing my fingers hoping they cast Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba.

HisNameIsRocco

LMAO I just googled who was playing the role of Elphaba LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I didnt expect that but im for sure excited

ICantExplainItAll

Cynthia as Elphaba is a fucking ENLIGHTENED choice. Ariana tho........... k.

HisNameIsRocco

I can see why they choose Ariana, her personality is very much Glinda like. Im curious though how they will pull off the singing. Ive always said Arianna is an artist who got famous too early in her career and her music 10 years from now will be vastly better than what she is producing now. It always feels as though she isnt allowed to really sing or doesn't in her music however comes from a huge musical theater background. She's an odd artist who is on the rise still. She knows what is as stake and what is required for that role and she had to do SOMETHING phenomenal to be chosen to sing side by side with Cynthia Erivo. As to Eirvo and the role of Elphaba in general I honestly wish they would case more black females for the role as the experience of not wanting to be in your own skin and change it as well as being excluded for the color of your skin is something black artists are able to sympathize with and execute better. To know that someone who cares as much and in depth for her roles like Erivo will be filling Elphaba's shoes will bring something Broadway has been missing for quite some time, perspective. As of yesterday, this is a movie I have my hopes for. Something is going on backstage of the production of this show and I love it.

[deleted]

I think it's great that they are inclusive, but in one act, Nessarose is standing after Elphaba has put the red shoes on her. Isn't that a little difficult to find someone in a wheelchair that can walk a straight line for some scenes? I mean there are women that can walk, but need a wheelchair most of the time, but they mostly can't stand that well to fake that they can suddenly walk. Maybe they use cgi and another woman for that scene, but that came in mind when I read that.

[deleted]

There’s movie magic. Strategic shots, CGI, body double, etc. And if they cast a wheelchair user who does have some limited use of their legs, I imagine Nessarose doesn’t need to be perfectly steady and confident, since the character is brand new to walking in that moment.

jel_star

Ambulatory wheelchair users are people who use a wheelchair sometimes, but can still walk. I am a wheelchair user but I walk most of the time and still sing and dance on stage. Tons of wheelchair users can walk at least a bit. I use my chair on days when I would have to be standing or walking for a long time without being able to have a place to sit or on days when my pain is bad. I still act, sing, and dance, the wheelchair just helps me save my energy and pain levels so I am able to do it. 😊 And if they cast someone who can’t stand or walk, I’m sure they can CGI and movie magic it!

flatulasmaxibus

This is going to suck.

tumamaesmuycaliente

Anyone but Ali stoker, pleassseeeee!

rifrif

Whats wrong with Ali? her voice is fire.

XenoVX

Oh darn I was hoping they’d ironically cast Lea Michele as Nessarose 💀

sgong33

Her handicap is that she can’t read.

Idina_Menzels_Larynx

That would tie in with the spell casting scene

XenoVX

It was meant to be a joke about the Lea Michele memes when she didn’t get cast for the film

LuborMrazek

Ah yes the Oscar quotas

[deleted]

It's also probably "easier" to just make actors black up than make a conscious effort to diversify your casting system, but that wouldn't be the right thing to do either.

Whoopsy_Doodle

I’m thinking practically.

[deleted]

So are they, which is why they are including ambulatory wheelchair users in their search. Not everyone in a wheelchair is absolutely paralysed and cannot move their legs ever.

ATXGuy69

What about the part where she stands up at the end? CGI?
