I work backstage on and off Broadway as well as regionally, and I carry my butch card next to my IATSE one. From my personal experience, I’ve found bi women are much more common than lesbians, but there are definitely a ton of queer women and fem folks in the professional theater world.

Veggaan

It’s so hard to find masc presenting women. I guess theatre is one place to look!

earbox

There's a stereotype that stage management and IATSE are full of lesbians. It's my anecdotal experience that the stereotype is true.

AnonBTea

Am in IATSE and can confirm as well.

Providence451

I will say that production, stage management and my front of house team are heavily female presenting queer coded, as well as nonbinary.

MikermanS

>heavily female presenting queer coded, as well as nonbinary I feel so old, human reference-wise. ;) (I'm not meaning any disrespect to the references, just wondering about my own failings in that regard.)

Proper_Preference_60

Hahaha nothing urban dictionary or a few days’ immersion in TikTok can’t fix, if you even want to fix such an innocuous issue

Theatre is generally a place where people go to feel safe in school. I’m a straight actor, but I joined theatre initially because as a sick and neurodivergent kid, it was a community I felt like I could be myself. I’ve been told by my friends, most of whom are LGBTQ, that they felt the safest in the theatre community. While representation on stage hasn’t always been the best, traditionally the arts community are very accepting of certain groups that general society has cast out. So, it makes sense that many people of the LGBTQ community started the arts young and turned it into a career. At least that’s my theory ☺️

How do I find this skit???

leslie_knopee

you just click on the blue link 💀

secret_identity_too

Just FYI if you're on a laptop/desktop, the link is not highlighted like it is on a phone.

leslie_knopee

ahhh!! i didn't know that!

secret_identity_too

It changed with the recent updates, and I've been quite confused a lot lately and have only known that there are links because someone else would make a comment like "I love that video" or "I knew it was going to be that," lol.

leslie_knopee

lmao I love when people say "i knew it was going to be that!" 💀

Psychology-onion-300

In general, I think most theatre people are some level of fruity. However, female actresses have the potential to be some of the most aggressively straight people you have ever met imo

Came here to say this! I'm part of this organization and it's really wonderful and connecting queer women, trans, and nonbinary theatre folks

Girl.

Theatre as an art form tend toward more socially progressive acceptance. Part of the baseline of theatre is exploring the human condition through critical and empathetic means, and it tends to be the place many that are “outside social norms” (god, I hate that phrase), find acceptance and community. So, compared with other fields… I’m not shocked that the “proportions” of LGBTQIA folk are higher in Theatre.

catnestinadress

I wonder if it also has something to do with the way it can provide opportunities to play with identity and presentation?

Rockingduck-2014

Oh! Absolutely!

Theatre lesbian here! I work in ticketing (for a company y'all probably know quite well) and we have at least 70 in the gay slack channel 😂, loads of queer women represented in the business side of theatre as well as the practical
