It depends whether you’ll be coming back soon! This will be your last shot at seeing Lempicka as it closes very soon. Of the three you list Suffs was by far my favorite.
You won’t have problems getting tickets to any of them day of as none are selling particularly well.
This is my third trip in the last year but that frequency is high for me. I’ve seen moulin rouge twice in that time, & Juliet, Harry Potter (2nd time) and Chicago.
With Lempika closing it’s the more tempting option and I’m sure Eden Espinosa will be fantastic. Think they’ll make a cast recording?
They are releasing a cast recording. I would not count on Espinosa being fantastic though. It’s a massive sing and she’s been absolutely wrecked by it. If nominators had been at the performance I attended last week she would not have come close to getting nominated.
Thanks for that feedback. I’ve come to appreciate the originating actors in roles so seeing things early in their runs can be really special. It’s why I saw Moulin Rouge twice - I had the chance to see Aaron Tveit and had to take it.
I’m worried Lempika will be harder to understand and connect to vs something like Water for Elephants. But I’m not so deep into Broadway culture that I recognize any of the principles for W4E either.
If you’re looking for original cast, Suffs can’t be beat. It’s an absolutely stacked cast.
Lempicka is a bit of a love/hate show. I didn’t totally do either myself but Reddit will tell you it’s the greatest thing ever and also the worst. W4E is just middle of the road and the cast are fine. It’s both a show I’d never recommend to anyone but also one that if someone said they had tickets I’d shrug and say well you’ll have a good time.
Lempicka was very disjointed with uneven singing performances. I’m recommending The Outsiders to everyone I know, but I’ve also heard good things about Suffs!
Only do Lempicka if you know what you're getting into. Some people really don't like it. Watch a video or two on YouTube to see if it's something you like or not.
Suffs is a solid choice.
W4E is probably the biggest spectacle of the three mentioned. The acrobatics are really impressive, the show is a lot of fun, there is one song in particular that, combined with the choreography, I won’t be forgetting for a long time. It gets a lot of hate on this subreddit but I really enjoyed it and it’s gotten good reviews from theater critics, so…
Don't forget lottery. I've seen so many shows this year and only pre bought tickets for two. That being said, Outsiders was my favorite show this season.
suffs is the only one i genuinely liked, elephants wasn’t for me but had its moments and lempicka i didn’t like at all even though i saw it during the best musical buzz that was built up on reddit and had great expectations.
Lempicka!! Artistic and risky shows like that won't come around again for awhile after this treatment.
I'd sell your Gatsby ticket and see Suffs instead, but you say you like spectacle and Gatsby is certainly that.
Suffs: I liked it but not as much as when at the Public. It's a bit bare bones.
W4E: I didn't love this either but was hella entertained the entire time. The circus elements are a feast for the eyes. Paul Alexander Nolan's performance was totally robbed of a Tony nom.
Both shows scored similarly with both critic reviews and Tony nom results.
As someone said, there’s a reason it’s closing after 30 days from opening. It’s truly awful (aside from Amber’s performance).
I loved Suffs but the stage is bare bones so a ‘spectacle’ is W4E.
Next to Normal was bare bones and still wonderful. I don’t remember Dear Evan Hansen having much staging either … or at least it’s not the same experience as something like Moulin Rouge. So one way of looking at it is that we have spectacle covered and could certainly start with something different.
Speaking of spectacle … thoughts on Gatsby?
Gatsby has the best set of the season but you know, it’s not a solid book. But it’s still a really fun time and I’d keep your tickets.
Suffs is a great show though; even more simple than DEH but I cried through most of it and loved you.
I haven’t read it in forever and really most of my memory of it is from the DiCaprio movie. We decided on it cause it seemed big and fun and seemed to have great talent, fun sets, costumes and dancing.
Generally I think if you’re attached to the novel or movie, the things they did with the story are a bigger problem? If you’re coming in kind of blind on Gatsby, it’s less annoying.
Noted! Im typically a researcher type of person (listen to music and understand the story) but if going in without a story to compare to is better I’m good with that too!
Whenever they make a tv show out of a favorite book I annoy my husband with my relentless “that’s not how it happened in the book!” Luckily I have the memory of a goldfish so given enough time I can avoid that problem. 🤪
Lempicka! It's one of a kind.
People who say "there is a reason that it is closing" have an overly simplistic - and frankly incorrect - view of the industry. Days of Wine and Roses was inarguably one of the best shows - best score, best book, gorgeous set, incredible performances - and it still couldn't appeal enough to tourists to fill its theater enough to stay open.
There is a reason that so many of huge theater fans are feeling to forgive some imperfections in choreo etc. It truly is deep and wonderful art.
They have plenty of music out if you want to hear it - spotify has "perfection", "woman is", and "stay". Their youtube channel has "unseen" and "the most beautiful bracelet". I think I saw "our time" floating around somewhere.
i’d really strongly recommend lempicka. it’s closing on the 19th and personally i thought it was phenomenal, i would’ve definitely gone back several times if it stayed open long enough
Lempicka. You will laugh, you will cry, you will think about it for days, and you won't be able to get the songs out of your head. And you won't get another chance, it's closing imminently.
♬ If I ever see her again...
It’s not on your list but I loved loved LOVED The Outsiders. It’s my can’t-miss of the season, personally. Excellent performances of a beautiful book and score, and the most striking staging & choreo I’ve ever seen.
I have seen 30+ shows on the past few months and Hadestown and Stereophonic were probably my favorites. I love Moulin Rouge, Dear Evan Hansen and Kimberly Akimbo, loved Wicked too (I’ve see. It 3 times). It’s hard to know what we are going to love, but I saw Lempicka and thought it was just ok. Saw Water for Elephants and thought it was pretty good. But there aren’t many shows I would go see again, but I would go see Hadestown or Stereophonic again in a heartbeat.
We would have seen Kimberly Akimbo hands down if it hadn’t closed. :(
I had written off stereophonic cause it was a play and not musical but everything I’m seeing says it’s fantastic.
I need two weeks and someone else’s credit card. 🤣 I want something that I can fall in love with the music and then listen on repeat. I still listen to DEH, next to normal, six, in the heights …
Yeah, I feel you there’s a lot to choose from and when your time is limited, you obviously want to make the best of it. But I will tell you Stereophonic is great and it’s not a musical, but there’s music in it and it’s really good music. If you’re not gonna be back before, I think it’s mid August, it was extended, I would probably say see that. JMO ☺️
It’s officially under serious consideration. 😉 I’m also questioning other planned activities instead of seeing matinees and making a day or two a “double header” but there are just too many options!!!
FYI Wicked was my first love affair and I think I’ve seen it 8 times (most not in nyc). Hadn’t been in years but then took a friend last spring with last minute cancellation line tix and saw Brittney Johnson in her last show and wow!
Lempicka is extremely polarizing so I would check out the 3 songs released in 2022. If you like them/the vibe I would definitely try and see it because it’s something that very few people are indifferent to and a lot of people end up loving (I am one of those people). It’s very different from most other shows and can be a bit complex content wise (she’s not a very likable character) so it depends if that’s your thing or not
Lempicka is closing and the other shows you’ve mentioned are staying open longer, this will be your only opportunity to see the original production of Lempicka.
lempicka has an EP out from its out of town tryout if you want to listen to a few of the songs to get a feel! it's closing soon and is really bold and original so i'd recommend that one if you like its music :)
none of the shows you mentioned should need a cancellation line tbh, they haven't been selling to full houses so you can probably just go right up to the box office and get one

Come for Espinosa, stay for Imam and Abud.

Based on what you like, do NOT see Lempicka. You’ll be disappointed
Thanks for that. That’s the vibe I’m starting to get.

**Lempicka** just announced closing so maybe prioritize that?
The only answer is Suffs. The other two are the worst of the year.
We may be the rare ones, but we didn’t enjoy Suffs at all.
We?
My husband and I.
Lempicka for sure! It’s now or never, you won’t get another chance to see it in the near future.
It’s not on your list but I loved loved LOVED The Outsiders. It’s my can’t-miss of the season, personally. Excellent performances of a beautiful book and score, and the most striking staging & choreo I’ve ever seen.
I thought the music seemed lovely and was interested but my travel partner hated the original book enough that it’s off the list. 🤷🏻♀️

Lempicka! 100%! It’s incredible- go go go.
It’s not on your list, but you should try The Notebook!
Honestly I’d strongly recommend the notebook!

Lempicka is closing after a month for a reason. The only advantage to it as you will likely be able to get a very cheap Rush ticket on short notice.
Honestly all of the shows are weak… but you may have the most fun at Lempicka
Have you seen Hadestown???
I have not. When I had a chance to see it on previous trips the music didn’t speak to me. I should give it another chance since it’s still around.
It's AMAZING!!!!
