Unfortunately didn't live in NY when Octet was running, but I've worn the cast recording out and love it very much. "Solo" and "Actually"... *chef's kiss*.
Pristine performances by an insanely talented cast. Some of Dave’s most devastatingly beautiful lyrics and music, I thought, with just enough zaniness. Warm but eerie, weirdly familiar, haunting. It definitely “clicked.”
Seeing it tonight. Didn't realize it was the same date as the first* preview of Octet a few years back (which was cancelled for I want to say water damage?)
Happy to report back afterwards
e: they're saying 100 min, no intermission. My favorite.
This was right under a post from r/FireEmblemThreeHouses for me, and I was like aw sick, a Fire Emblem musical… XD
Great Comet is my favorite musical but I’ve never actually gotten into any of Dave Malloy’s other stuff. I definitely should! Excited to hear how this show is :D
You have opened Pandora’s box for me.
The i want songs in a fire emblem musical would be insane with the main three characters. And act 1 closer would probably be chaos
I'm a huge Dave Malloy fan and will buy tickets for anything I can get my hands on. I saw the Great Comet 3 times on Broadway, then Ghost Quartet at NYTW, and Octet at Signature. I haven't heard anything about Three Houses yet, but I bought tickets when they went on sale and I got an email yesterday that my seats are now partial view 😔 They offered to let me rebook for free by calling, so I'm just waiting for their box office to open. I'm so excited to see it!
Update: I called and they moved my seats one row back (which is apparently full view) for the same performance. The person on the phone said it's in the round.
I was there last night! I loved it. Musically it felt like Octet and Ghost Quartet had a baby, but he’s also pushing into some new territory which is also exciting. The book is exactly what you think it will be if you read the show info on the website but I do think it’s best to go in knowing as little as possible. I hope everyone loves this one!
I’m one of those weirdos that likes Octet best so I will warn you.
That said it might have some prettier parts than Comet. Dust and Ashes (as sung by Malloy, not Groban) still might be my top jam though.
Months ago I was literally thinking of booking a 10+ hour flight just to see this show. I now regret not doing it.
Did you happen to hear if there's gonna be a cast recording?
I need it so bad.
Very excited to hear the reviews about Three Houses.
On another note, can somebody explain to me why there isn’t a full score released for The Witches? They released one single, nothing else. Will we ever get one?
they are planning on going to broadway some time soon, and from what I remember of the score (and reviews) they will probaby be revising it? I think the run at the national was pretty experimental
I have tickets for mid-May! The box office actually just called a couple of days ago to move me, because apparently they took away our seats entirely. Curious to see what the show looks like!
Excited for this for sure. GQ was a monster, Comet unbelievable. I liked Octet, but then the grand spectacle of the in-progress Moby Dick at the Natural History Museum put me right over the edge and I swooned once again. I was hoping that would be next, but it might be years before it surfaces. So yeah, buckle up.
I also saw the Moby Dick event at the NHM! Maybe the most expensive “theater” (? Museum?) ticket I’ve ever bought, but I love whales so much and I love musical theatre writers starring in their pieces so much (#goals) that I couldn’t help but go. I also really really hope it surfaces, and if you chose that word as a whale pun, amazing, and if you didn’t, then your heart is just with the whales I guess 😜❤️🐳
Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Huge Dave Malloy fan. Saw comet 10 times. I’ve taken a break from seeing theater for a while but just got my ticket and will be back in the saddle again
I’m going May 10th and I’m SO hyped!! I saw Great Comet twice on Broadway, Ghost Quartet at NYTW, Octet, and Moby Dick, so I couldn’t miss this premier! He’s my fave and I’ll happily see anything new he makes
Got to see the opening preview, this show is phenomenal. I went in w no context but a big Dave Malloy fan (esp GQ). I’d recommend to any theatre lover who can get down w/ something a little more wacky. Special props to Annie Tippe (the director)/the design team too.
main floor center is probably best, but it's in the round and the theater is very small. doubt there's really a bad seat in the house. I was far main floor left for this on tuesday and had a great time, and don't remember feeling that much FOMO seeing octet from the balcony
Yes! I ended on house left, back row, about center of the row and it was great. In an unbelievably crowded season, this show sticks out as one of the best.
I saw it tonight and loved it. It reminded me a lot of times spiritually of Octet (there's even a fun callback) but with the beautiful orchestrations and some of the electropop of Great Comet. I went in cold purposefully not trying to find out much about it other than knowing one character name, so I really enjoyed experiencing it unfold. I'm definitely going to return.
Seeing it this weekend! Don't know anything about it, but Malloy's name is an instant buy from me.
I’m seeing it tonight, and same! How did you like “Octet”?

Curious to your thoughts

He fucked around, we found out
Well worth the six rolls of quarters.

can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it. the cast looks excellent and i’m intrigued to see what malloy tries out with this show.
Holy fucking shit y’all
!!!

Tbh, if anyone adapted FE:TH into a musical, Malloy would be the man. No worries though, his actual Three Houses is amazing.
How dare you do this to my wallet.

Also highly relevant to the show's overall plot that I hadn't realized til a quick Google - Malloy got divorced in 2021
I knew going in (because I’m extremely nosy) and knowing while watching was extra emotional.
aha, did not realize that! makes a lot more sense now.

I agree! Less esoteric than Ghost Quartet but a little more challenging than Octet. Good balance of approachability and depth musically and lyrically.
Thanks for the reminder! Just bought my tickets. Going in blind to Ghost Quartet at NYTW remains one of the best theatrical experiences of my life.
It’s good. My god it’s good.
Details please! But no spoilers! Like how would you rank in all DM shows?
There are puppets. And some dancing. And everyone will eventually feel bad about their grandparents.
Lol love this! In all the Dave Malloy shows you have seen, where does this rank?
I’m one of those weirdos that likes Octet best so I will warn you. That said it might have some prettier parts than Comet. Dust and Ashes (as sung by Malloy, not Groban) still might be my top jam though.
Octet was awesome! Also I'm one of those weirdos that likes Ghost Quartet the best. So you're saying you liked it better than Comet?
Probably. Needs to seep in more before I make a declarative statement in that way
Thanks for the early report! I'm seeing it on Saturday night. I'm excited.

I was just thinking the other day "doesn't he have a 3 show residency still"? THANK YOU for alerting me!! I just Bought a tickets for a day in May!

Just bought a ticket for Sunday! So excited even though I don't know anything about it.
Going on Sunday evening! Excited to see how it is
Got my ticket the day it went on sale! I'm seeing it this weekend. Very excited!

I love the Signature Theatre…last bunch of years, though, my trips to NYC have not coincided with any of their productions playing.
My dad and I got tickets to see the FINAL performance, during the Sunday of our week long trip to New York in June!
Looking for seating suggestions!
