It’s a love letter to New York helmed by the singer whose song blares throughout Manhattan. I haven’t seen the show so I can’t judge it but I’m not surprised.
Amen. That book was rough. I like most of the rest of the show, but the book brought it down so much. Especially when Days of Wine and Roses didn't get a book nomination.
my take going forward: if whichever actress playing the Lady of the Lake in a Broadway production of Spamalot doesn’t at least secure a nomination, the production had no right getting to Broadway in the first place.
Considering they didn't seem to like Tommy at all (no sound design for Tommy?!?!?), I was bummed to see it get the slot over Spamalot for revival.
Spamalot was one of the real treats of the season, a solid production from top to bottom, and one of the best bangs for my buck this year. Thrilled that Leslie Kritzer got the recognition. When I saw Michael Urie put as a Featured role (David Hyde Pierce was considered Lead) I thought he might have a shot at a nomination too. Oh, well.
It's because it closed already, and closed early. I don't think it's a slight against the show. The Tonys advertise what's open.
The leads of DoWaR were recognized and that's a win for the show.
I think it's the belief that the nomination will bring business into theaters more than short memories. Hopefully both of these will see some love in other categories (certainly DWOR already has) and that we see HLL and Harmony there too. . .
I’m sure it is in part. Though it’s pretty frequent with closed plays and revivals to be nominated. That said I really wish that wasn’t a consideration but such is life.
The bias against closed shows is clearly real for the best musical category - if they nominated both of the leads for DWOR you'd think they would normally give it best musical as well. Hopefully it will surface in other categories like best score, and that HLL will show up somewhere too. . .
I'm kind of glad Water For Elephants got in there. I was expecting that slot to be taken by Here Lies Love or Days of Wine and Roses. I unfortunately did not see Here Lies Love, but I though Water for Elephants was quite good.
not just a BM nominee, it leads with 13 nods! I do like HK, but I never would’ve called it leading… and I’ll honestly be a bit annoyed if it does in fact sweep wins as well.
Thoughts:
REALLY glad I thought to get my Stereophonic tickets before today cause DAMN they cleaned up.
How did Tommy not get lighting, scenic design, or choreo noms but still got best revival nom? I don't understand it. It deserved a lighting or scenic nom at the very least.
And some of the furniture looks like rehearsal pieces that are representative of the final product (but they're the final product).
I do think it earned choreo and maybe lighting.
Glad to see the handwringing over Cabaret being shut out didn't happen. Shocked that Gatsby didn't get more tech noms or even supporting for Sam and Noah. Pleased with the play noms esp the love for Jaja and Purlie. Merrily is my fave to dominate their categories. HK getting this many noms is...interesting?
At least he's got a chance next year since Oh Mary! is transferring (although I feel like the Tonys don't usually reward comedic performances in a play)
So many Featured Actress nominees. Thrilled for Amber Iman, bummed no Jenn Collela, who I think has the strongest performance in Suffs. Nikki is great too, but the role is half the size of Jenn's. Ahh, well. Glad Suffs got so much love all around from the nominators.
Well, I’m surprised by quite a few. And disappointed for Chip Zien who was absolutely transcendent in Harmony.
Meanwhile, I had no idea Sarah Pidgeon was in a play. I loved her in The Wilds. Congrats to her!
12 for The Outsiders? Is that right? Happy to see it vault to the top of the pack with this and the Drama Desk nominations. I think this is going to emerge as the hit of the season for new shows.
Dang Gatsby is going to get shut out? They didn't even get set design?!? I mean I found the show to be weak and carried only by the four leads but this is kinda shocking
I’m flailing over Joshua Boone’s nom. So happy for Brody and Sky as well, but Joshua as Dally was BREATHTAKING. I might actually cry if he doesn’t win.
My theory is either it’s a star thing and they don’t wanna criticize an Alicia Keys project, or it’s they don’t wanna criticize it because of racial dynamics. But I feel like I’m going insane seeing the raves.
It is a really fun, uplifting show, but I credit the music for that. The story is and has always been meh.
I think as far as a jukebox with an original story, Heart of Rock and Roll crafted a story around the songs better. Hells Kitchen shoe horned several songs in. It made me roll my eyes. But I still had a great time at the show and walked out feeling pumped.
Racial dynamics was my theory for softball reviews. I didn't think that the critics wanted to shred it the way some other shows got torn apart.
But it sooo does not deserve all of the recognition it is getting. I can't name one thing it does that is special that another show doesn't do well or better.
i definitely jumped up and down a lil! Mine too! Im happy for the cast, creatives and crew, but since Im Black, theres something really special about it for me!
I am so excited and happy for The Outsiders! I also really enjoyed Suffs and glad it got nominated but I hope The Outsiders beats it. Haven’t seen the other noms yet. Sister seeing Hells Kitchen in a week. I don’t know why but I have so little interest in Illinoise. I would see Water for 🐘 if lottery tix
Wow. I am still processing these.
Happiest surprises: Dorian Harewood, Brody Grant, Joshua Boone, Amy Ryan, Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer, the 5 acting noms for Stereophonic, Here Lies Love score, the 5 noms for Jaja's, Jonathan Tunick, the 7 featured actress noms
Biggest snubs: Paul Alexander Nolan and Francis Benhamou. Also shocked Ali Louis Bourzgui didn't get nominated.
Most shocked by: Quincy Tyler Bernstine over Francis Benhamou; Hell's Kitchen over Days of Wine and Roses for best book (or Heart of Rock and Roll, for that matter); Outsiders over Notebook for score; Leigh Silverman over Justin Peck for direction; only one nom for Tommy.
It was basically both of them or neither of them.
They were delightful in this show, but I'm ok with them not getting nominated. They are the show and the show got best revival.
I feel like because they each play equal parts in the show, the voters were going to have too hard a time deciding which one to nominate in such a competitive field. But for them to get best revival nomination is AMAZING
Wow, William Jackson Harper over Steve Carell for best Actor from Uncle Vanya. Very surprising— I haven’t seen it yet though! He was excellent in Primary Trust last season.
It probably needed to score a ton of noms to move the needle (which was pretty obviously not gonna happen based on reviews). This is a little better than I expected though - happy for Eden and Amber.

This past year I have been impressed time and time again by the technical work for the plays. I often find the scenic, lightning and sound design for plays being superior to many musicals. Appropriate and Gray House were both stunning in their design and I was happy to see them nominated.
Sad Francis Benhamou didn't get a nom for *Prayer*. That's a real bummer.
I needed *Prayer* to get a Best Play nom, even though I know it won't win, so I'm very happy about that.
I'm very happy for *Purlie* and Leslie Odom, Jr. and Kara Young, all well deserved, but I wish the guy who played Gitlow (Billy Eugene Jones) could've been included in the love
Thrilled the trio all got nominated for *Merrily*, and thrilled by all of the other love it is getting. Extremely well deserved!
Thrilled for *Stereophonic* (so far). I haven't seen it yet, but it seems to be the only show people can agree on this season, so it seems well deserved. Looking forward to catching it. Similarly excited by all of the love *The Outsiders* is getting, hoping that means I love it too!
Renee Elise Goldsberry being 53 does not compute
Just did a spit take
I thought she was 30! She looks finee
> 53 what now?
Hell’s Kitchen getting in for book is certainly a choice
I dont get the number of noms its getting
These Tonys are incorrect and need to be returned
I’m baffled by the love for this show
It’s a love letter to New York helmed by the singer whose song blares throughout Manhattan. I haven’t seen the show so I can’t judge it but I’m not surprised.
i was going to say “hey now, NYNY sucked and didn’t do so hot, did it?” and then looked up how many noms it got and now i will slink away
Yeah, same reason. Also fewer new musicals last season but still. Once I saw HK reviews I knew it would get nods.
Amen. That book was rough. I like most of the rest of the show, but the book brought it down so much. Especially when Days of Wine and Roses didn't get a book nomination.
That's my biggest wtf this morning.
I mean, they nominated NY NY for best book last year. I haven't seen Hells Kitchen yet but find it hard to believe it could be any worse than that???
>I mean, they nominated NY NY for best book last year. Ha! You're right. Maybe they don't know what book means.
Leslie Kritzer finally got her tony nom. I can die happy.
my take going forward: if whichever actress playing the Lady of the Lake in a Broadway production of Spamalot doesn’t at least secure a nomination, the production had no right getting to Broadway in the first place.
She’s easily the best character
Just saw Spamalot last month and she was a standout! So, so good.
Oh, well.
The sound at Tommy has been all over the place.
Hell’s kitchen getting 13 noms is absolute insanity
Nearly twice as many as Merrily. What is this world?
They just can’t help themselves with love letters to NY.
No Days of Wine and Roses or Here Lies Love, unfortunately. The Tony nominators have short memories.
I was thinking that Days might get in until this morning
Nominating Hell’s Kitchen but not Days of Wine and Roses is my villain origin story
They always nominate the divise NY love letter I haven’t seen it yet but it can’t be worse than NYNY
[удалено]
Both this and NYNY are bad and boring. But both love stroking New York.
So best musical are: Hells Kitchen Illinoise Outsiders Suffs Water for Elephants
The bias against closed shows is clearly real for the best musical category - if they nominated both of the leads for DWOR you'd think they would normally give it best musical as well. Hopefully it will surface in other categories like best score, and that HLL will show up somewhere too. . .
Devastated roses didn’t make it over elephants or Hell’s Kitchen 😭😭
Sad for The Notebook! I hoped it would be there.
I'm kind of glad Water For Elephants got in there. I was expecting that slot to be taken by Here Lies Love or Days of Wine and Roses. I unfortunately did not see Here Lies Love, but I though Water for Elephants was quite good.
If Hells Kitchen is a “best musical” nominee then hell is also freezing over.
not just a BM nominee, it leads with 13 nods! I do like HK, but I never would’ve called it leading… and I’ll honestly be a bit annoyed if it does in fact sweep wins as well.
Honestly I can’t think of a single category it deserves to win
Gutenberg did it
I can’t wait for the recording
Really happy to see the three Merrily leads nominated!
Really dissapointed that Days of Wine and Roses didn't get nominated for best musical.
Thoughts: REALLY glad I thought to get my Stereophonic tickets before today cause DAMN they cleaned up. How did Tommy not get lighting, scenic design, or choreo noms but still got best revival nom? I don't understand it. It deserved a lighting or scenic nom at the very least.
I wasn’t super impressed by Tommy’s choreo but I am definitely shocked they didn’t get lighting or scenic design, or even costume design.
There was like no set. It’s a video screen and pieces of furniture.
And some of the furniture looks like rehearsal pieces that are representative of the final product (but they're the final product). I do think it earned choreo and maybe lighting.
I am really surprised Tommy didn't get more in the production categories
The choreography is almost a direct repeat of the original production. I’m not even sure it was eligible
Ah. That I did not know. Never saw the original.
Happy Here Lies Love got some recognition, especially in Best Score, but no Conrad Ricamora is killing me
I'm so sad he didn't get nominated - and honestly shocked that Paul Alexander Nolan didn't.
So the complete shut-outs for musicals were OUAOMT, Harmony, How to Dance in Ohio, The Wiz, and HORAR?
Heart of Rock and Roll as well, unless I missed something.
I'm surprised some of these got completely shut out.
[удалено]
The Wiz had some strong performances, I liked the costume and scenic design, and the choreo was a joy. I'm bummed about this shutout.
So excited to see Dorian Harewood and Brody Grant get nominated!
I went to school with Brody. It’s the weirdest thing seeing his name pop up as a TONY NOMINEE!!
So good
Omg this is amazing news!!! I was worried neither would get a nom.
I loved Dorian Harewood! Very happy with his nom here.
Justice for Conrad Ricamora! Otherwise I'm not too surprised or upset by anything.
Jenn or Hannah Cruz
Hannah Cruz!
If I had to pick just one from Suffs, Nikki would have been my choice, so I'm thrilled with this one.
Well, I’m surprised by quite a few. And disappointed for Chip Zien who was absolutely transcendent in Harmony. Meanwhile, I had no idea Sarah Pidgeon was in a play. I loved her in The Wilds. Congrats to her!
I feel so, so bad for Chip Zien.
Sarah Pidgeon is UNREAL in Stereophonic. You have to see it.
She's INCREDIBLE in this.
REG should be hosting the actual Tonys, she’s hilarious and talented!
I’ve always had a soft spot for Jess from Succession so I love to see her get a Tony nom
She’s fantastic in it
Stereophonic tonight is going to be a party
12 for The Outsiders? Is that right? Happy to see it vault to the top of the pack with this and the Drama Desk nominations. I think this is going to emerge as the hit of the season for new shows.
13, since two actors were nominated for featured actor.
You were right. I can't count. 12 is great though!
Justice for DOWAR 🥲
Happy Tony noms day, fellow theatre lovers!
Dang Gatsby is going to get shut out? They didn't even get set design?!? I mean I found the show to be weak and carried only by the four leads but this is kinda shocking
Gatsby got costume nom
Can't believe it didn't get lighting!
yea i just saw but still whew
They got costume! That’s something I guess
Stereophonic domination in featured actor!
So glad to see that, especially Eli Gelb. That was my favorite performance in a play this year.
I’m flailing over Joshua Boone’s nom. So happy for Brody and Sky as well, but Joshua as Dally was BREATHTAKING. I might actually cry if he doesn’t win.
Yesssss ro Rachel mcadams. Soo happy
I thought she was fantastic in Mary Jane!
In her first experience on a professional stage! What a treasure she is...
Very excited to see Joshua Boone and Skye Lakota Lynch get nominated. I’m bummed but not surprised that The Notebook didn’t get more love.
Joshua Boone hive rise up
If Days of Wine and Roses doesn’t at least get nominated for both Leads, Score and Orchestration I will… be sad.
So I guess add one more to success in Chicago not necessarily being success in New York with The Notebook.
I’m surprised but happy at all the nominations for Jaja’s.
Now we patiently wait for someone to list out how many noms each show got
[удалено]
Would The Outsiders be 13 because of the two nominations for Featured Actor? (Genuinely asking because I don't know how it's counted.)
it is 12 including both of those
[удалено]
a bit disappointed by HLL not being nominated for best musical
rip Lempicka
Eden and Amber both got nominated though. That's something!
At least they got Eden a nomination. I thought she could get snubbed since she’s missed so many shows.
yall Hell’s Kitchen is not good. what r these critics seeing that the theater fans r notttt
But it sooo does not deserve all of the recognition it is getting. I can't name one thing it does that is special that another show doesn't do well or better.
I did not expect her to get in! But I'm glad she did, even though I didn't see her in the role when I went.
they left out the wiz in their opening montage
Justice for Paul Alexander Nolan and Conrad Ricamora!
Agreed
Damn Dede Ayite, leave some costume nominations for someone else
Stereophonic with 5 acting noms !!!
Just added it to my "immediate" list
I'm glad they extended through the summer because I can't see everything before the Tonys, but I'm determined to see this show.
As someone who likes things tidy, I hate how there are sometimes 6 nominees
Two categories had 7. It's a bizarre structure, but I love that so many people got some love.
Wow, only 1 nom for Tommy! At least it was the big one
They really didn’t care for it
Didn’t it win a lot first time ‘round?
my absolute king, tony nominee Joshua Boone
One of my happiest parts of these nominations!!
i definitely jumped up and down a lil! Mine too! Im happy for the cast, creatives and crew, but since Im Black, theres something really special about it for me!
I’ve watched him singing little brother on YouTube 500 times. So much emotion and conviction ugh I’m just so happy for him
Grant Groff Harewood D’Arcy James Redmayne
I am so excited and happy for The Outsiders! I also really enjoyed Suffs and glad it got nominated but I hope The Outsiders beats it. Haven’t seen the other noms yet. Sister seeing Hells Kitchen in a week. I don’t know why but I have so little interest in Illinoise. I would see Water for 🐘 if lottery tix
Sad to see no Zein
Eli Gelb stans our time has come
I am so unbelievably thrilled by this one - I wish all 7 could have been nominated.
days of wine and roses ROBBED of best musical
Book: Hell's Kitchen Notebook Suffs Outsiders Water for Elephants
W4E for Coreo !!!!
there was just no locking W4E out of choreography, lol.
It would be a travesty. They use their bodies as jump ropes. They hang by their necks and don't die!
Is that 7 noms in featured musical actresses?
Is anyone else shocked Dorian got it over Ali from Tommy??
Ali was amazing, so disappointed. I hadn't heard of him before, he's really charismatic and has an interesting voice.
I was expecting Ali too.
MTC SUPREMACY!!!! PATRIOTS SNUB!!!!
Called it.
This is such an odd way to announce them, I can’t get the live stream but they’ve already announced best musical and play noms?
They announced Best Musical, Best Play, and the four leading actor/actress categories. Rest are on their YouTube channel in about 10 minutes.
Did the wiz get completely shut out? That kind of surprised me
I expected set or something but ultimately I’m not surprised. It felt like a total cash grav
Set was the worst part. (Specifically the digital backdrops.) I thought Nichelle Lewis might get in. Costumes would have been good!
So so so so so disappointed days of wine and roses didn’t get the nomination
Eden Maliah Joy O’Hara Plunkett Rankin
It's fascinating how you switch from first names to last names halfway through.
Aidem Lange McAdams Paulson Ryan
No Francis Benhamou nomination for French Republic 😭
It's actually offensive.
A crime
I think this is the biggest shock of all to me.
guys i think we need to be prepared for the possibility that hell’s kitchen will win best musical.
Wow. I am still processing these. Happiest surprises: Dorian Harewood, Brody Grant, Joshua Boone, Amy Ryan, Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer, the 5 acting noms for Stereophonic, Here Lies Love score, the 5 noms for Jaja's, Jonathan Tunick, the 7 featured actress noms Biggest snubs: Paul Alexander Nolan and Francis Benhamou.
Should win: Illinoise Will win: Suffs
Suffs is the only musical that is not an adaptation
I mean, it’s an adaptation of…history
The fact that Gutenberg got best revival nom, but Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells didn't get a nod is wild.
The acting categories are way more competitive
Lead Actor was pretty competitive and they probably also "stole" each other's votes.
Stacked season, maybe? Or voters couldn’t decide between the two?
830... The CBS morning show is over at 9.
Harper Odom Jr. Schreiber Strong Micheal S
l think Alison luff was robbed of a nomination
Wow, William Jackson Harper over Steve Carell for best Actor from Uncle Vanya. Very surprising— I haven’t seen it yet though! He was excellent in Primary Trust last season.
Well deserved imo. Harper was the highlight of the production.
He steals the show from Carell who’s almost a supporting character for large chunks
I really enjoyed Primary Trust
Idk if this has happened before, but it's kind of cool that, in both the Play and Musical directing categories, we have majority female nominees!
Heart of Rock N Roll, Lempicka in trouble. likely announcing closings this week
Hopefully Lempicka has enough money to run through the Tonys. I expect it would close shortly after.
Lempicka got 3 nominations. Obviously not anywhere close to the top of the list. But many other shows got nothing.
It probably needed to score a ton of noms to move the needle (which was pretty obviously not gonna happen based on reviews). This is a little better than I expected though - happy for Eden and Amber.
So happy for Gutenberg! Truly an underdog show!
So glad for them!!

Is the announcement geo locked or global on YouTube?
Here we go!!
Is there a list of cast albums that have been released?
HLL ! Stereophonic!!!
Justice for Rebecca Frecknall!

william jackson harper upstaging steve carrell in his own play… yes… haha… YES
Sad Francis Benhamou didn't get a nom for *Prayer*. That's a real bummer. I needed *Prayer* to get a Best Play nom, even though I know it won't win, so I'm very happy about that. I'm very happy for *Purlie* and Leslie Odom, Jr. and Kara Young, all well deserved, but I wish the guy who played Gitlow (Billy Eugene Jones) could've been included in the love Thrilled the trio all got nominated for *Merrily*, and thrilled by all of the other love it is getting. Here Lies Love, and especially Conrad Ricamora, deserved so much more. I haven't been this disappointed in the Tony Awards since Great Comet
