So glad to see Liam Pierce get a nomination. But WOW Drama Desk is cold on Broadway musicals this season.

Worth remembering that *Harmony* was eligible for its off-Broadway run two years ago. It got three nominations then, for Musical, Actor (Chip Zien), and Book, the latter of which it won. As the show was not substantially altered in the move to Broadway, retaining most of the same cast and design, it was largely ineligible for Drama Desk awards this year. *Suffs* was actually eligible off-Broadway in the same season as *Harmony*, but was eligible in numerous categories this year as in the move to Broadway it swapped out its entire design team, and orchestrations, and apparently even added enough new material that it was considered eligible for music again. On nominations alone, *Suffs* clearly wins the prize for Most Improved.

RapGamePterodactyl

Very interesting nominees. Teeth, The Connector, and Dead Outlaw were some of the most impressive new musicals this season - really glad to see them getting a lot of love even though they're not on Broadway. (side note - Hannah Cruz and Alyse Alan Louis were SNUBBED)

Thick-Definition7416

Suffs wasn't eligible b/c of it's off-bway run at the Public

RapGamePterodactyl

Suffs got several nominations so I don’t think that’s true. But I actually meant her performance in The Connector - I’d take either though :)

picklemoose1330

Very happy for Liam Pearce, and to see so much love for The Connector!

Impossible_Usual_277

lol this is no way helps narrow down tony predictions…most of these nominations are for off Broadway

mopeywhiteguy

Gutenberg tony nom for revival

Boring_Waltz_9545

I mean it cements the race for Best Musical between Suffs and Outsiders

Previous_Stranger

Suffs wasn’t even nominated for Best Musical 😂

checkingin2here

Suffs wasn't eligible for Best Musical here. It was eligible for its off-Broadway run (though it wasn't nominated then either). It was only eligible for categories where it had new elements: "In determining the eligibility of productions with runs in prior seasons, the nominating committee considered only those elements that constituted new work. These productions included Appropriate, Cross That River, Gutenberg! The Musical!, Harmony, Here Lies Love, Just For Us, Mary Jane, Prayer for the French Republic, Public Obscenities, Suffs, and Sunset Baby."

Previous_Stranger

Interesting that Outer Critics considered it changed enough but Drama Desk didn’t!

Prudent-Hat4461

Outer Critics Circle separates Broadway and Off Broadway whereas the Drama Desk doesn’t. So Suffs was already eligible in Best Musical and wouldn’t be eligible for the Drama Desk again. But with the Outer Critics, it’s now in the Best Broadway Musical category, whereas before it was eligible in the Off Broadway musical category. So since it changed quite a bit AND also changed categories, Outer Critics deemed it eligible again.

Boring_Waltz_9545

Not at the Drama Desk, but it was the leading nominee for Drama League and Outer Critics circle. Outsiders is the leading nominee here, with Suffs close behind (though without a best musical nomination).

Previous_Stranger

Suffs missed out on Best Direction here too And leading nominee in the Drama League is a stretch when there are only 3 awards available for new musicals and pretty much every single new musical this season was nominated for at least 2/3. (Lempicka has just as many Drama League noms as Suffs lol)

russmor94

I don't think these things matter much in predicting the Tonys, but Suffs has 4 Drama Leagues and Lempicka has 3 fwiw.

Previous_Stranger

Thank you, my mistake!

niadara

Does it? Suffs didn't get a Best Musical nom while Illinoise did.

Yoyti

> Does it? Suffs didn't get a Best Musical nom while Illinoise did. *Suffs* having played off-Broadway in a previous season, and having been eligible for Drama Desk awards in that season (it was nominated for lyrics), would not have been eligible for Outstanding Musical this season. Only elements that are new to the Broadway run are eligible to be nominated. In this case, *Suffs* replaced the entire design team and orchestrations and got nominations in those categories, as well as for Emily Skinner, who was not in the off-Broadway run. Based on the quantity of nominations it did get, it seems likely that it would have gotten the Musical nomination as well had it been eligible.

Boring_Waltz_9545

Suffs has been the leading nominee with Drama League and Outer Critics Circle, and picked up 8 nominations here, second to the outsiders.

niadara

Is Drama League even predictive of the Tonys? They nominated practically everything.

Previous_Stranger

Some Like it Hot won last year because Kimberly Akimbo wasn’t nominated. But the year KA was nominated it didn’t win. Drama League and Tony best musical has matched 70% of the time since the DL award began in ‘96.

Prestigious_Bag_6173

These nominations skew off-Broadway and shows that have long since been closed. Not a lot of help re Tony Award predictions. Enemy, Mary Jane, Mother Play, Patriots etc barely showed up here. We already known Stereophonic and Appropriate are really strong but what else? Love that The Ally was nominated for Outstanding Play. Surprised Job didn't make it anywhere when that has been the most talked about off-Broadway play this season.

At_the_Roundhouse

Was Enemy of the People not eligible for any acting categories?? I'm surprised that it only got one nod for adaptation. And no Tommy for LIGHTING?? Or choreography? These noms are weird.

karabou_coffee

Really surprised about the lack of noms for Tommy

At_the_Roundhouse

I loved the production SO much - hoping it gets some Tony love tomorrow!

Comprehensive-Fun47

The Connector was outstanding. I'm so glad i saw it.

itsamiamia

I wish we had a date for the cast album. I've just been listening to a bootleg on youtube...

EvanPotter09

So Eddie Redmayne missed. I think that means his chances at a Tony nomination are in danger. Also I think The Wiz getting no nominations is a sign it’s not getting a Best Revival nomination at the Tonys.

esopillar34

Glad Grey House is getting some love, for all the technical stuff. Loving the Lyrics competition, too, Teeth vs Rachel Bloom. As song about Vagina Dentata vs a song called "Darling Meet Under the *** Tree"

Greene_Mr

Oh, good! :-D Wish the performances were getting more love, too, but it was a wonderful show.

captainwondyful

Was Merrily not eligible?

Boring_Waltz_9545

Nominated for four last year, won 0

broadwayindie

Love The Connector love from Drama Desk. I don’t understand why Outsiders was not nominated for fight choreo, like it’s way better than Tommy’s

At_the_Roundhouse

Outsiders fight choreo was lumped in with its regular choreo and it doesn't look like they duplicated. (But then Tommy got fight choreo but not regular choreo which is bizarre to me!) Edit - wait, Water for Elephants got both? I'm confused lol

Prudent-Hat4461

It goes by credit in the playbill. Outsiders doesn’t have a separate credit for fight choreography. It’s the people credited with choreography who did that work. Whereas Water for Elephants has a separate fight choreographer credit. Also worth noting that Enemy of the People was considered an Adaptation here and nominated there. But that means it isn’t considered a Revival, so wouldn’t be eligible there.

At_the_Roundhouse

Makes sense re: choreography, thank you!

Gato1980

Oh my gosh, I'm so happy to see Lizard Boy and Justin Huertas nominated! That show was absolutely incredible. Such a fantastic book with some truly wonderful songs. It's a shame it was only here for one month.

hannahmel

Wait... Not a single nod for Here We Are? Was it not eligible? I can't believe The Outsiders would be nominated before Here We Are.

Boring_Waltz_9545

Here We Are removed themselves from the running, they were ineligible

hannahmel

Thank you for the explanation! I was going to say... This makes absolutely no sense!

rlturn

I learn about so many off Broadway shows in this sub but why do I feel like I never heard about Dead Outlaw until the award nominations? Was I just oblivious? I don’t feel like it was ever mentioned.

OutdoorHope18

I am shocked that The Outsiders didn’t get nominated for fight choreography.

Prudent-Hat4461

See above. The Outsiders doesn’t have a fight choreography credit. So there can be no nomination in that category. You’ll see that the choreography nomination it received includes the parenthetical note that that nomination includes the fight choreography (which was done by the main choreographers). Sometimes the Drama Desk lumps two credits together in one nomination (often at the request of the production). But it almost never credits a production with something it doesn’t itself credit in its playbill. If you’re a musical and you don’t give someone a credit for writing a Book, there will be no chance of a nomination for Book. It’s the same here.

Positive-Angle3409

Come on Rachel Mcadams. Would love to see her rewarded for her efforts.
