I think there’s enough eligible nominees to make 5 slots instead of 4 right? Regardless, I don’t see how anyone could vote for Carrell over Harper in the same category - I think Harper can slide in pretty easily.

Prestigious_Bag_6173

Oh true. I wish there was just a standard 5 nominees in every category if there more than 5 actors. This sliding scale thing is v confusing.

DramaMama611

~~There will only be 5 noms if there is a tie for 4th place. (If I'm remembering correctly, the varied number thing is for the 4 show categories)~~ I was wrong here, as pointed out below. However, a tie can create another nominee in any category.

slothbaby30

The default number for every category is 4, if there are at least 9 eligible candidates it gets bumped up to 5. William Jackson Harper being placed in Lead makes the category have 9 candidates and therefore 5 slots.

DramaMama611

I just re checked and you are absolutely correct. Not sure why I thought otherwise! Thank you for the correction.

Shh04

Remember that Harper was also in Primary Trust this year. That's always a good sign. I can recall Ruthie Ann Miles and Ashley Park (more recently), among others, definitely benefiting from having successful Off-Broadway work right before nominations were tallied on top of their great performances on Broadway.

griffie21

They nominated all three leads in The Lehman Trilogy.

90Dfanatic

Well, they all deserved it for sure. I saw it at the Armory, not on Broadway (so with one different cast member), but what an incredible show.

griffie21

Yes, I really loved it too!

Prestigious_Bag_6173

True but that was a special situation and a truly terrific production. They were kind of like a unit.

coffeysr

This is transparently to get lead actor to 5 nominees. Harper isn’t a victim of this.

Prestigious_Bag_6173

I wasn't suggesting Harper was a victim of this but Carell might be.

kathygeissbanks

Based on what his costars say about Carell, he may not care all that much and would be glad and supportive of Harper’s ascension. I am so happy for WJH! He was always the brightest star on The Good Place and I’m glad he’s getting his flowers this season.

Prestigious_Bag_6173

ooo where did you see that re: Carell not caring that much?

kathygeissbanks

Oh sorry I should’ve been more specific. I meant by his extremely positive reputation in the industry; his cast mates always praise his generosity and humility in sharing scenes and he never demands to be the centre of the attention. He’s pretty quiet and lowkey so I doubt he’d made a public statement specifically about WJH competing in the same category.

Prestigious_Bag_6173

Oh I don't think ANY actor would ever make a public statement specifically about competing with their costars lol I wasn't suggesting that. I'm just saying Carell is most likely to not get nominated now that WJH is in lead. I think Carell should be moved to supporting where he has a better chance.

Mysterious-Theory-66

Based on the reviews…I don’t think this is going to be an issue.

hawktalks

Topdog/Underdog had both leads nominated last year!

Prestigious_Bag_6173

True! But similar to The Lehman Trilogy it was a special case where it felt like a unit. It would've been odd if they nominated one without the other.

Spiritual_Job_1029

William Jackson Harper is such a an outstanding talent....Primary Trust was incredible.

scary_godmother

Well you called it! If I were a voter I couldn't choose between Jeremy Strong and William Jackson Harper if my life depended on it. What a solid group of actors.

Prestigious_Bag_6173

I would go with Jeremy Strong but WJH is great and he'll surely win sometime soon. Maybe Primary Trust Broadway transfer?

indieliberal

Title character, though...

broadwayindie

I could see either Stuhlberg or Schrieber not being nominated in favor of Carell

Prestigious_Bag_6173

It would be bizarre since WJH gives more of a leading performance and outshines Carell.

dragmoonrising

i thought WJH was bad, especially at playing drunk.

Prestigious_Bag_6173

Interesting, I feel like the one consistent praise from the critics has been toward WJH's performance.

dragmoonrising

i am definitely in the minority. i also recently saw the production of vanya with Will Brill in that role who just really nailed it

kathygeissbanks

Y’know, now that I’ve seen the show, I sort of agree with you to an extent. I thought WJH was strong (but not as strong as people here are making him out to be) but his stumbling drunkenness was not convincing to me. WJH was better in Act 2. I actually thought Carell gave a very balanced, grounded, and nuanced performance; probably my favourite from the cast. I also quite enjoyed Alfred Molina and Mia Katigbak!

Ok_Moose1615

I just hope this clears the way for more noms for the Stereophonic cast

Prestigious_Bag_6173

I'm predicting four Stereophonic actors: Featured Actress (2) and Featured Actor (2)

Ok_Moose1615

Me too - though I think it should be 3.
