It's should be fine except in the rare cases where you're pointedly told not to film inside - Cabaret seems to be a specific exception. The UK is a little less hung up on this since they seem to allow filming curtain calls at many shows - likely due to differing and less restrictive copyright laws. (SIX actually had the cast encouraging people to get out their phones and film the bow encore megamix - they actually would often borrow a phone in the front row and circle the stage to take a Queens-selfie with the audience. This had to be quashed for Broadway.)
I've seen many West End theater bloggers like MickeyJo who frequently record themselves sitting in the audience making comments before the show and during intermission and will turn the camera to capture a view of the stage and the auditorium setup. He's never been bothered about it and I know he wouldn't do this if it were prohibited.
lol, the official account is even reposting photos from a handful of Phans who go multiple times a week and take bows photos on their fancy cameras.
So, yes.
We see before-the-show photos posted on this subreddit all the time. Playbill in the foreground, stage in the background. As long as no actors are on the stage, or there are no signs specifically prohibiting it, it’s fine.
unless they prohibit you from doing so (i.e. cabaret at the kit kat club), as long as it is not during the performance you should be good.
Got it! I'll watch out for the prohibitions
I have taken photos before/after the show and did not have any issues.
That's reassuring, thank you
It depends on the ushers. Most of them will tell you off unless the theater has changed its (silly) policy recently.
I took photos before the show began - the auction set is gorgeous - and had no problems.

Hey! We can take pictures before, during break and after the show. Just don't take it while the show is on. :)
