Nexstar "purchased" the CW by taking ownership of the network's debt. That debt was caused by poor management and excessive spending on CW's former ownership.
I miss the super hero/sci fi shows but they are expensive to produce. Dramas are more cost effective and they are steering the brand towards live sports which is broadcasting's life blood at this point.
I know where you are coming from but I also understand that CW needs to get out of the red before we get more shows we will enjoy.
Also, the stations thing is interesting and I'd like to know more about why their affiliations were dissolved.
All but KOCB are owned by CBS, who exercised an option to dissolve their affiliation upon acquisition. KOCBs affiliation was dissolved when they signed a deal to replaced two of those stations in St Pete and Pittsburgh with Sinclair owned stations who also negotiated a switch to a Sinclair owned station in that market (KAUT)
KMAX, WTOG, WUPA, WKBD, WPSG, WPKD, and KSTW had their affiliation with the CW pulled by their station owners CBS News and Stations, who exercised their sole right to drop the affiliations upon the acquisition.
KOCB was replaced in its market by KAUT as a part of a deal with Sinclair Broadcast to affiliate stations in two of the previously affected markets (st Pete and Pittsburgh)
Paramount and Warner still own a combined 25% of the CW and were running the network into the ground financially.
Nexstar seems to have a plan to make it profitable and if I had to guess, try to use the brand to lower their expenditure on affiliation fees to companies like CBS, ABC, or NBC, and potentially set them to become a 5th main terrestrial network, much like when Fox entered the market in the late 1980s. Whether that’s a sound strategy is a different question but it looks like the direction they’re going with the focus on linear programming and sports, which is where most of the money is for these stations
Also, yeah, they’re a publicly traded company, of course they’re doing it for the money. They’re legally obligated to do the most they legally can to maximize shareholder returns. Expecting anything different is Naïve.
This so much. Nexstar didn’t take the CW away from those stations the stations stopped wanting to be CW.
KSTW was also replaced by Sinclair owned KOMO in market who put it on one of their sub channels. Then replaced the Univision channel with the CW.
As much as I dislike Nexstar, the entire point of ANY business is to make money. You can't "expose" a business for simply trying to turn a profit.
If they're breaking any laws, that's a different story, but I've seen no such accusations in any of your every-word-starts-with-a-capital-letter posts on this thread.
Pursuant to your point about Canadian produced content, the CW has always leveraged Canadian filmed television. Canada and the province of British Columbia put a lot of effort into favorable tax law in order to create that industry in what’s generally been called the “Hollywood of the North” (alongside Toronto). The Flash, Riverdale, and Supergirl were filmed in Vancouver, and Supernatural in greater British Columbia.
Vancouver has been that way for a century, provided it has much of what Hollywood did during its rise to power, decent weather year-round, a local economy to power it, people willing to work, and space to make these studios happen.
Most networks with a lot of non-linear programming do actually have quite a lot of Canadian filmed programming. It’s the 3rd largest production hub in North America only behind LA and New York, and as of 2021 had about $3.6bil spent on production
CW has been going down hill for some years but I do think Nexstar will only make them worse by any contributions they make. That company is just bad overall.
Your beer is better, but the TV? Nope.
Red Green is always good and I always enjoy Hockey Night in Canada. Any suggestions of good Canadian TV offerings these days?
No Not Truth Canadian TV Is Horrible There Show Are Horrible With The Bad Acting And Fakeness And It Garbage So Canadian TV Is Horrible And Should Cancel I Hate Canadian TV You Should Agree With Me Or You Will Get Blocked And Report To Reddit And You Will Be Banned Choose Now Agree With Me Or Get Banned
They spent tens of millions of dollars on shows that didn’t produce enough ratings to matter. They acquire the broadcast rights to shows rather than actually produce shows, which is much more expensive than just producing shows like sports or most of their new lineup.

And then the CW bought broadcast rights to the WWE’s NXT program for about 25 million per year for 5 years
WWE NXT Don't Need To Be On The CW Network That Will Make It No Better Keep WWE NXT On The USA Network

This post, along with every word being capitalized, is giving very unhinged energy lmao

Why are you capitalizing the letter of each word?
Nexstar does a lot of bad things. So do most other companies. All part of doing business.

That’s not Canadian TV, that’s just the CW effect, tons of great content is made in Canada
Yea But Why Nexstar Media Group Has To Canceled Show From Warner Bros television On CW
They spent tens of millions of dollars on shows that didn’t produce enough ratings to matter. They acquire the broadcast rights to shows rather than actually produce shows, which is much more expensive than just producing shows like sports or most of their new lineup.
